Chapter Tokoyami: Revelry at Dawn
"Stop it! Let go of me!"
Izumi felt sick, positively sick as the sensation of Shigaraki's touch and scent remain potent in her memory. She could still feel the burning sensation of where Toga had carved her name into her arm. She recalled feeling the hot blood pool down her arm as that man parted her legs, threatening to violate her.
"No…" He forced a kiss on her, refusing to listen to her pleas. The kiss was violent, painful and possessed no affection whatsoever. "Stop struggling… do you want to die?"
"I'd rather die than be touched like that by you!" She snarled at him and yelped when he smacked her across the face. The sharp crack from his touch had marred her skin, causing it to decay and crack along the cheekbone.
"You'll wish you were dead once I'm done with you."
She continued to struggle, and to scream as his hands disintegrated the barrier between them. Unlike the first time, she was unable to pull away, unable to escape. She felt the hideously painful stab of him inside her, and screamed in horrified agony.
"NO!"
~End of Dream~
"NO!" Izumi shot up in bed, sweating and shivering. Full cowl had activated, her blood pulsating with the power of One for All. Her bedframe had collapsed from the violent jerking movements she'd done in her sleep, and her sheets were soaked in her sweat.
"A dream?" She whispered and wiped at her face. Her quirk immediately calmed and she curled up on the broken bed trying to calm her rapidly beating heart. "It was just a dream."
She jolted as a knock on her door startled her. The door opened and both Uraraka and Froppy stepped in looking concerned.
"Midori-chan are you alright? We heard you screaming." Uraraka saw the bed and ran to her. "What happened? Are you injured?"
"No.. no I'm fine, Ura-chan. I'm sorry if I woke you." She held out her hand, gripping Uraraka, needing the comfort of her friend despite trying to reassure her she was fine. "I just had a bad dream is all."
"Are you sure you're okay, Ribbit?" Froppy crouched down beside her and took the other arm. Her fingers stroked over the scars there, covering them as if she knew what was troubling her. Midori sent her an affectionate smile and gripped both their hands.
"Yeah, thanks for coming to check up on me, you two, but really I'll be okay." She insisted. "You guys should go back to bed. I'll do the same once I set out the spare tatami mat."
"Do you wanna sleep in my room?" Uraraka offered. "It might help you sleep better if you're with someone."
"That's sweet of you, Ura-chan, and if I decide I need to I'll let you know… but I'm gonna tough it out." She forced a smile on her face. "A hero shouldn't let fear stop her from anything, even sleep."
"Alright but you let us know if you change your mind, ribbit." Tsuyu hugged her one last time before the two girls walked out to leave her alone.
Izumi let out a long calming breath and curled up into a ball as the dream still sent frightful shivers up her spine. She couldn't sleep just yet. Deciding she needed work off the adrenaline she pulled on some clothes and hurried downstairs to go for a jog.
Exiting the front she bounced on her toes to work up the adrenaline, but then paused when she saw she wasn't alone. A bit further down the path she saw a figure in the shadows and immediately recognized her classmate.
"Tokoyami-kun?" She jogged over to him, the stoic bird faced boy turned his cool gaze to her. "What are you doing out here?"
"I could ask you the same thing." He pointed out and had her laughing a bit.
"Eh heh good point." She fidgeted, both of them waiting for the other to speak. Izumi broke the silence first. "I couldn't sleep… nightmare." She admitted and hung her head.
"I see… I'm sorry." He spoke with little intention to divulge, but the look on her face broke him down. "Dark Shadow is often restless during the night. Most of the time it doesn't bother me, but on days when I'm mentally drained it becomes a trying task to find sleep. So I come out here to ease my mind and find some level of peace before returning to slumber."
"That's kind of what I'm doing. Finding peace of mind… trying to relax." She inhaled deep. "There's something about the night that's very calming."
"You say that, but your eyes are anything but calm, Midoriya." He pointed out, seeing the fear in them. "What was your dream about, if you don't mind me asking? Does it have to do with the kidnapping?"
Izumi said nothing, and the stunned expression on her face immediately had Tokoyami regretting the question.
"Forgive me, it's not my place."
"That's not it… it's just no one's asked me about that since we started living here at the dorms. I mean I got the usual "are you okay" type questions, but everyone's been kinda tip-toeing around it."
"Can you blame them?" Tokoyami crossed his arms and leaned against the light post. "It's pretty obvious what happened," Tokoyami motioned to her scars and had her instinctively covering them. " None of us wanted to make you uncomfortable or upset."
"I get that… so why are you asking about it now?"
"Because you're clearly upset already, and I assume that if something is bothering you it would be that." He reached out and tipped her chin upward so she would look him in the eye. "Have you talked to Hound Dog at all? He is the school counselor."
"No…" Izumi admitted with a flush. The light touch to her chin had been surprisingly intimate, nothing she'd expect from someone as subdued as Tokoyami. She hugged herself tighter. "He offered his help, but I didn't take it." She closed her eyes, sighing heavily. "I don't think he and the other teachers would understand. I don't think anyone would really understand how I feel."
"They may not understand, Midoriya, but they can listen." He uncrossed his arms to lay a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Bottling up your emotions just allows them to fester. You'll feel a lot better if you get whatever your feeling off your chest."
"I suppose you're right…" She reached up touching his hand, and looked into his eyes pleadingly. "Would you… be willing to listen, Tokoyami-kun?"
"Me?" Surprised, Tokoyami very nearly pulled away from her. When he'd suggested she talk to someone he hadn't meant himself. Looking into her eyes, however, those big, sad, green eyes, had him buckling. "Of course."
"Really?" When she smiled with relief he gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze.
"Yes, why don't we go sit down."
"Would it be alright if we walked instead?" She fidgeted as she glanced back at the dorm. "I'd rather not have anyone else listen in."
"Yes, we can do that." He motioned her to take the lead, then walked companionably beside her. For a few moments things were quiet, and the noises of the night welcomed them. It was peaceful, and reassuring.
"When I was little, all I'd ever dreamed about was becoming a hero."
"You're well on your way to fulfilling that dream." He complimented, tucking his hands into his pockets.
"Am I though?" She lowered her head. "Just seems like the harder I try the more trouble I get into. USJ, The Tournament, My encounter with Stain, and now Shigaraki… just seems I'm either causing trouble for someone or getting involved with others who are already in trouble."
"You're too hard on yourself." He eyed her, not enjoying the sad look on her face. "I can't speak for the others in our class, but I personally have learned a great deal about heroism by watching you."
"Eh?" She looked up at him surprised. "Really?"
"Yes… you're clumsy yet, but you possess many of the attributes i've always admired in heroes: courage, determination, kindness… and you inspire those around you to do the right thing. Even Bakugou."
"Kacchan doesn't need my help in that department." She laughed. "He may be abrasive, but he's got the heart and spirit of a true hero."
The way it was said… so factual and affectionate… weighed on him. He couldn't explain this intense pressure in his chest when he thought of Midoriya. It had been that way since her offhand comment at USJ when she complimented his quirk, and it intensified during the Sports Fest. Now everytime he looked at her, talked with her, or even thought about her… it felt as if his heart was growing too big for his chest.
"You…" he fist his hands in his pocket. "You care about him a great deal don't you? Him and Todoroki both?"
"Uh well…" How had they gotten on this topic, she wondered. "Yes I suppose I do. They're my friends, after all."
"I think you and I both know there's more than friendship between you three."
"Well, yeah. I dated both of them so of course there's not than friendship there, but that doesn't necessarily mean-"
"They're special to you. We can all see that there's something building there…"He paused the walk as they reached the high ground looking out over the campus. The first hints of dawn were tinting the sky a moody mauve color, and made him want to go back to his room and curl up into the darkness. "You three have a trust and connection that none of us can understand or even hope be apart of."
"DON'T SAY THAT!" She shouted at him suddenly, surprising him. "That's not what's going on, and I wish you and the others wouldn't assume such a thing. Yes it's true Kacchan and Shoto are special to me, but I'm not exclusive to them. I value and cherish all of the friendships and relationships I have here at U.A. and I don't want to just be lumped together with those two because we have history. It could be I'll take a liking to someone else entirely. I have that freedom, and that choice."
"Y-yes," Tokoyami cleared his throat surprised by her outburst. He hadn't meant to trigger whatever switch he'd hit, but apparently it was a sore spot. "You can choose your own path, of course."
"That's right, because there's more than one path to take. It's up to us to make that decision. We're all young, with different goals and dreams and standards so who knows where those things will take us in the future."
She huffed and breathed deep touching her chest.
"My future is what I make it. I can't let the past hold me down or keep me from achieving my goals. I decided a long time ago that I would be a hero, and I'm gonna make that dream a reality." She smiled warmly and lifted her eyes to his. "Wow… I feel so much better after letting that out."
"I'm glad to see you smiling at least." He returned the warm smile and the tension eased. "You're just not yourself when you're not smiling Midoriya."
"Hehe, I do feel more like myself. Thanks, Tokoyami-kun." She stepped to him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "You're a good listener."
"Uh…" the pressure on his chest increased. He could feel his heart thumping against his ribs in fast hard knocks. His hands fidgeted and finally came out to hold onto her. He hadn't realized just how petite and soft Midoriya was. Her scent was soft and fresh like pine trees and cut grass, and the warmth of her body pressed on him was so comforting and… pleasing.
The hug lasted longer than either of them meant to. The quiet sounds of early morning, and the picturesque scenery just added an extra element of romanticism to the moment. Tokoyami didn't think… he just acted. His grip on her tightened just a little and he pulled his head back to look atv her face. She'd gone flush, and dewy-eyed, her lips were slightly parted and he had this insane urge to nuzzle back into her.
"Midoriya I-" he winced a little as the sun peaked out behind the mountains and cast a golden hue over the campus.
"Oh wow look at that view!" She pulled from his arms. Tokoyami made a sound of alarm, his hand reaching for her, wanting to escape in the warmth of her embrace again. The sun shone brighter and he had to squint against its rays. Through his hazed vision he saw Midoriya turn to him, that big cheerful smile shining like the sun. "Isn't it beautiful, Tokoyami-kun?"
"Yes…" his hands lowered and retreated back to his pockets. "It's breathtakingly beautiful."
And… he thought, lowering his head with a sad smile… entirely too bright for me.
