Legacy is the spin-off from The Originals, which is a spin-off from Vampire Diaries. All shows are streaming on Netflix, and they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I've enjoyed all three but can't say if I like VD the best or The Originals.

I was watching episode six or seven of this season's Legacies (season 3), and I had this idea for a one-shot that I just had to write. I have no plans to continue it. In the Legacy episode, the Salvatore School for supernaturals has lost most of their students due to too many monsters invading the school. It seemed like a great place for some slayers from BTVS. This will be a year after BTVS season 7, and Dawn is a senior.

Slayers in the Salvatore School

*****London*****

Caroline Forbes-Salvatore ran into another dead end and fought with despair. Her daughters were destined to kill one another on their twenty-first birthday unless she found a way to alter their fate. She had left the school, her daughters and students behind over a year ago, hoping to find a solution to the Gemini problem. Gemini was the name of the coven of witches her daughters' family line was from. How could something be so written in stone?

As she left the library, her phone buzzed. A text from her daughter, Lizzie, telling her the school needed new students desperately. Another problem—one she was leaving Rick to solve on his own. Was she wasting her time away from them? Breaks and summer vacation wasn't enough time with her girls—she knew that. They needed her now, but she couldn't resign herself to one of them killing the other someday. If there was a way to save them from the magic in their bloodline, she would find it.

The fact that she had been a vampire who had them magically placed inside her was hard enough to get people to believe. That they came from a line of siphon witches who gained powers only by siphoning the magic from supernatural creatures was equally difficult to explain. Witches served Mother Nature—unless they were a Gemini witch that became a vampire. They could then use their own magical nature to give them all the power they needed. Rick's bride was murdered by her twin brother on her wedding night, but the coven ensured their line would continue by placing the twins inside her. The coven's entire powerline was somehow tied to the twins that were born in each generation. Caroline would not stop looking for a way to save her daughters. Although they were not biologically hers, she had given birth to them and raised them from then on. She was the only mother they knew, and she could not rest until their future was free of their family curse.

Distracted, she didn't see the woman coming into the library and knocked into her. "Oh, I'm sorry," she said, looking at the woman.

The redheaded woman smiled. "Oh, it's okay," she said. "I'm often doing the same thing."

"You're an American, too!" Caroline said, noticing the lack of British accent.

"I am—a Californian to be exact," she said, holding out her hand. "Willow Rosenberg."

"Caroline Salvatore," Caroline said, smiling as she shook her hand.

The redhead, though, looked startled by her touch. Although the beautiful blonde woman's hand was not cold like a typical vampire, Willow knew she was a vampire due to the way she disturbed nature. It was a subtle abhorrence against nature. "How-how are you outside?" she asked. She turned Caroline's hand and saw a ring, her daylight ring. "That's not the Gem of Amara."

"No," Caroline said, pulling back her hand. "It's just a ring a friend gave me."

"You're a vampire, right?" Willow asked. "How are you out in the daytime? Did you kill anyone inside there?" She gestured to the library.

"Kill people? Of course not!" Caroline said, offended. "I don't kill people!"

Willow peered into the woman's eyes, searching. "You have a soul!" she observed.

"Well, of course, I do!" Caroline said. "Just because I'm a vampire, it doesn't mean I'm a monster!"

"Normally, that's what vampires are," Willow said. "Demons who use the body to slaughter humans."

"I'm a mother of two human teenage daughters! I'd never slaughter humans. What kind of role model would I be?" Caroline asked, offended. "I'm assuming you're a witch 'cause only a witch would be so presumptuous."

Willow was a bit flummoxed and didn't like not knowing things. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to offend," she said. "But I lived in Sunnydale—a hellmouth. The vampires there—there were a lot—were not at all like you."

"Vampires can be monsters, especially if they turn off their humanity," Caroline said.

Willow frowned, feeling confused. "Huh? They have no soul. They're demons possessing people and have been so for thousands of years," she said.

Now it was Caroline's turn to be confused. "What? Where are you getting your info 'cause it's way off. The Originals, the Mikaelsons, are only a thousand years old. Klaus, the creator of my line, died two years ago," she said. "Their witch mother created vampires by turning them into vampires, thinking she was saving them from being slaughtered by werewolves."

"I'm starting to wonder if there are two kinds of vampires on this planet, and how in the world does the Watchers' Council have no record of it?" Willow wondered.

"Hey, I could use a drink. Why don't you let me take you this pub around the corner and we can talk? It's been too long since I've got to spend time with an American witch. My best friend Bonnie is a witch, but we've not had a chance for a face-to-face in months," Caroline said.

"I was going to look for a book, but I can do that later," Willow said.

An hour later, Willow was bursting with excitement and dying to brag to Giles that she knew something he didn't. Ever since they'd closed the hellmouth and she'd activated all the slayers, they'd struggled to keep all the slayers in line. There were just too many of them. Xander was with Faith in Africa—Egypt specifically—training about thirty girls that he'd found in Africa and Asia. Robin and Kennedy were in South America working with about twenty. The rest were in London with Willow, Buffy, and Giles. Of course, Vi and Rona were there helping. They had about two hundred, and Buffy was feeling the strain of so many. She had been pushing Giles to take half to America, but she didn't want to be in charge of a school. It seemed that Willow was sensing more slayers all the time even though the First had killed so many potentials.

After realizing that Willow wasn't going to try and slay her out of hand, Caroline relaxed. She liked Willow, and the girls couldn't start talking. Eventually, she poured out her struggle finding a way to stop the fate of her witch daughters. Willow's eyes lit up when she heard about a new type of witch. The tale, though, of how Caroline became a mother even though she was a vampire was extraordinary and horrific.

"Their father must be incredible to let you raise them when they aren't your biological children," Willow remarked.

"Oh, Rick's great. He was our teacher in high school, and the best friend of my former brother-in-law," she said. "Of course, my husband, Stephan, died soon after our wedding."

"I'm so sorry," Willow said. "I lost the love of my life, so I know how that feels."

"It sucks even after all these years," Caroline said. "We barely got to be together before he died in some stupid hero display."

"My lover died by a stray bullet when someone tried to shoot my best friend," Willow said.

Caroline winced. "That's awful," she said.

"I don't want to get your hopes up, but I happen to be a very powerful witch," Willow said. "And I work at a school for supernaturals. Buffy, my best friend, is a supernatural creature. Our mentor, Giles, is British, and he helps us run the school."

"Is she a werewolf?" Caroline asked.

"No, I did date a werewolf once, though," Willow said.

Caroline grinned. "Me, too," she said. "Of course, then he became a hybrid."

"What's that?" Willow asked. When Caroline explained, she laughed. "Giles is so gonna die when he finds out there are so many things he doesn't know!"

"I'd love to see your school," Caroline said. "My daughter just texted me before I ran into you about how our school is struggling due to losing so many students the last semester. We had one too many monster invasions to suit some parents. The fact that we didn't lose hardly any student didn't reassure them."

"It's the hardly that might give you some problems," Willow said. "How many students died?"

Caroline winced. "A few. Sadly, I've been away so long that I've personally never met two of them. Of course, one of them was a phoenix, so who knows if he'll stay dead? He dies and comes back a lot," she said. "He's kind of the damsel in distress at the school. My daughter Josie had a big crush on him for a while."

"You know an actual phoenix? That's so amazing!" Willow said. Then she knew she needed to tell Caroline one important fact. "Okay, well, I'll be honest. My school is a school for super powered teenage girls called slayers who slay evil creatures and a few like Buffy are above eighteen." She decided to leave off the vampire in front of slayers in case Caroline freaked out.

"Seriously? How did they get powers? Not vampires or shapeshifters?" Caroline asked.

"That's a long story," Willow said. "Come back to the school, and I will tell you all about it."

"Do any of them have an anti-vampire policy?" Caroline asked.

"The wards in the school won't let anyone will ill intent inside, so you will be safe," Willow said. "It's not specific to vampires 'cause we do know a few that aren't exactly evil."

"You need to totally write down the spells you use, so I can get our school updated," Caroline said, leaving some money on the table as they left to flag down the cab. "There has been way too many monster able to get inside."

It took them about a half hour to get to the school as it was on the edge of the city, and Caroline whistled when she saw the property. "This school must bring in a lot of cash," she said.

"Not really," Willow said. "It took us over six months to finally access the Council's funds. They have billions, and Buffy was the only active slayer, and they had her working fast food to pay the bills after her mom died."

"They have billions and don't pay their slayer? That's insane," Caroline said.

"Totally. We weren't terribly sad when they got blown up," she said. "Well, Giles was as he had a few friends still on the Council. Luckily, his mom had retired from it."

Caroline's mind was racing with so many things, but she walked through the gates of the school without problems, which caused Willow to smile at her. "See. I told you the wards wouldn't harm you," she said.

"What does it do to people who do want to harm you?" she asked.

"Let's just say they won't be getting through the gates," Willow said with a smirk.

Caroline began to have real hope that a witch with that kind of power might be able to help her daughters. When they made it inside, she was taken aback by all the young girls who radiated a type of raw energy. Energy that surpassed even a pack of wolves or hybrids.

"They're so much," she murmured.

"You get used to it," Willow said. "Well, mostly. Sometimes, though, the high energy can be exhausting. We have some witches in training and a few regular folks training to be watchers to balance things."

"All of these girls can slay monsters?" Caroline asked.

"Yes. But I'll let Giles tell you about it in detail as he loves giving the slayer speech," Willow said.

"Hey, Will. Back already," Buffy said as she approached.

Caroline eyed her warily as she sensed that she was in front of a true predator—a feeling she'd not felt since facing Klaus. She eyed the beautiful blonde with interest. The woman was shorter than any predator she'd ever met. Of course, at first glance, Klaus never felt deadly either.

"Yes, I didn't make it inside the library exactly as I ran into Caroline, and I have so much to tell you and Giles. Where's Giles?" she asked. She moved to peer in a nearby room before Buffy could answer.

"Hello. I'm Buffy," Buffy said, holding out her hand to Caroline. "Sorry that Will forgot to introduce us."

"Caroline Salvatore," she said.

Buffy frowned when she shook her hand, so Caroline quickly said, "I'm supernatural, but I'm not evil."

"Of course, you're not," she said. "You wouldn't have gotten this far if you were."

"Willow told me that you teach a school for supernatural girls that are empowered to kill monsters," Caroline said.

"Yep," Buffy said. "Vampire slayers—I'm the original. Then I died for a few minutes, and Kendra was called. Then she died, and Faith was called. So it was just Faith and me until Willow used the magic from this ancient slayer weapon I found to activate all the other slayers."

"Did you say vampire slayer?" Caroline asked, feeling slightly terrified. She walked willingly into a house full of vampire slayers. Rick was going to kill her for making such a rookie mistake.

Willow returned, hearing her comment. "Don't worry, Caroline. I told you that we only slay evil creatures," she said.

Buffy looked confused. "Her hand is warm, and it's daylight. She can't possibly be a vampire," Buffy said. "So why does she care?"

"I am a vampire, but I'm not the kind you slay," Caroline said. "At least not from what Willow told me."

"Her kind was created by magic," Willow said, sounding giddy. "Come one. Let's go tell Giles. He's going to die."

Caroline didn't know what to expect as Willow had mentioned Giles several times to her already, but a reasonable attractive British man a bit older than Rick wearing glasses was not exactly who she pictured. However, the man had a very intelligent gaze, reminding her of Elijah Mikaelson, strangely enough. After Willow filled them all in on her accidental meeting with Caroline and what all Caroline told her, Giles took off his glasses and began to clean them.

"I am so astounded," he said. "How could this be?"

"I know, right?" Willow said with a grin.

"On one hand, I'm very surprised. On the other, it does finally explain some texts I have come across over the years," he said.

"Really?" Willow asked. When he moved to his books with Willow on his heels, Caroline stared at them in bemusement.

"Don't take it personally," Buffy said. "They are big ole' book lovers."

"Rick's a bit like that, but he's also a vampire hunter," she said.

"Who's that?" Buffy asked.

"My daughters' father, and the headmaster at our school," Caroline said. "Are you the headmaster here?"

"Nope. Giles tried to make me be it, but I said no way. I didn't even finish college!" Buffy said.

"I got a degree in journalism and used it for a year after I graduated, but then I had the girls and became a teacher," she said. "It's not the life I planned, but I love it."

"How about I give you a tour and you give me more details on how you became a mother," Buffy said.

Caroline felt strangely at ease with the younger woman. Although Caroline might look a bit younger than Buffy, she had over a decade on her. However, the woman had a look in her eyes that made Caroline think she had been through a lot in her life.

On her tour, she watched a striking beautiful tall teenager come up to Buffy and asked who her guest was. Caroline was surprised when Buffy introduced her as her younger sister.

"This is Dawn, my seventeen-year-old sister," Buffy said.

"Almost eighteen," Dawn said.

"You two don't really look that much alike," Caroline observed.

"I know," Buffy said. "She got the height and the boobs. It's so not fair."

"And the brains—don't forget," Dawn said with a smug smile.

"Hey, my SAT scores were very high, thank you very much," Buffy said.

"You did get the super strength and healing and fighting skills," Dawn said.

"I'd rather have height and boobs," Buffy grumbled.

Caroline laughed, feeling right at home with the girls. "I have twins, and they are fraternal. I feel I've heard versions of this argument," she said.

When Buffy filled Dawn in on who Caroline was and her school, Dawn's eyes lit up with excitement. "An American school for witches, werewolves and magical vamps? I so want to go there!" she exclaimed.

"Are you supernatural?" Caroline asked, smiling at the girl.

"Sort of," Dawn said. "I was supernaturally created from Buffy about four years ago. My blood can open portals, and Willow is teaching me some magic."

"Then you could definitely attend," Caroline said. "In fact, I was wondering if you had any slayers underage that might want to come to America. We could so use some more paying students."

"I do have some Americans who are tired of tea and soccer," Buffy said.

"That would be you," Dawn said with a smirk.

Caroline thought having some slayers in the school would make them so much safer, and it wouldn't require Hope and her daughters to always be the one to save them.

"I have a thirteen-year-old named Addison, who is from North Carolina," Buffy said. "Her parents only let her attend for our summer camp. They said it was too far to come here, but they might be open to a school in Virginia."

"That would be great," Caroline said.

She shared more about the town, and the school in Mystic Falls that she had loved so much. The fact that there was a public school also in the town very much interested Buffy. Her mind started thinking about the many possibilities.

Caroline sent her daughter Lizzie a text to let her know that she had some strong leads on new students. The more time she spent with Willow and her mentor and best friend, the more excited she felt. Willow and Giles said they would work on helping her daughters. Willow's confidence was not something that she had ever encountered before. When Caroline expressed her doubt, Dawn was the one to reassure her.

"Willow is the strongest witch you'll ever meet," Dawn said. "She raised Buffy from the dead a few years ago after she'd been dead for months. She changed the rules entirely when she made all potential slayers real slayers."

"Part of the reason Willow is so effective," Giles began, "is because she is brilliant. Before she got into magic, she was very good with computers, math, and science. Of course, she still is. That allows her to use magic in ways others don't think of. It also makes her excellent in creating spells and uncovering things."

Willow blushed at the praise. "I just hate not knowing something," she said.

"Well, if you can find a way to stop one of my daughters from killing the other, I would be so happy," Caroline said. "I've been away from my school for far too long but when they hit sixteen, I just knew the time would be away from me before I knew it. I have to find a way to help them."

"You can go home," Willow said. "I will figure this out."

"You know, Will, maybe you can use that computer to see if there are any large houses in Mystic Falls," Buffy said. "I know Dawn is ready to be back in the States and so am I. Some of the girls who don't have the money to go to the private boarding school could attend Mystic Falls. Maybe I could work at the school if you need a teacher in self-defense. I also worked as a peer counselor for a year our last year in Sunnydale. I think Robin, the principal there, would give me a good reference."

"That's fantastic," she said. "Rick's been teaching some self-defense, but he's human. It would be good for them to fight against someone who can push them."

"I'll start looking at properties," Willow said.

"What do you think, Giles?" Buffy asked her mentor.

"I think that we are a bit crowded here," Giles said. "How many students can your facility hold?"

"The house that is our school belonged to my husband and his brother. They at one time used it as a boarding house, so there were many rooms. Then when I got a large donation from a wealthy parent, I added onto it," Caroline said. "Updated the central heat and air and the plumbing. We can hold fifty to live on the campus."

"How many do you have?" Giles asked.

Caroline looked at her daughter's latest text. "Lizzie says they've gotten thirty commitments, finally, so they can stay open," she said.

"That's good," Buffy said. "I will talk to my girls."

After that, everything seemed to happen at warp speed. Dawn was giddy with excitement and told several girls what was happening before Buffy could assemble them all and ask how many would like to move to the States with her. None of them wanted to be separated from their leader. Although Buffy was flattered, she told them, "All of you can't come. I'm sorry. Willow is going to look at properties in Mystic Falls. Twenty can stay at the private school—those whose family would be happy with that. Sorry, girls, but Americans will get first dibs."

There was a lot of grumbling about that fact, but they eventually got the number down to fifty. Willow would go to help Buffy set things up and meet Caroline's twins.

Caroline went back to her hotel to call Rick and tell him her news.

Rick was floored. "We'll be at capacity and have a new instructor at the same time? You're sure none of these slayers will harm our vampire students?" he asked.

"They kill the demon vampire kind. Their vamprs turn to dust after they are slayed," Caroline said. "I'm going to go on patrol with them tonight, and they'll show me."

"Our online applications are on our website so have them apply. I will need updated shot records and school records faxed or mailed here," Rick said.

Caroline said goodbye to Rick, who didn't waste time sharing the good news with Lizzie and the others.

*****Two Weeks Later*****

Lizzie Saltzman stood next to her twin Josie as what seemed like dozens of hot teenage girls walk into their school carrying all kinds of bags like they weighed nothing.

"Do we like this invasion of super strong vampire slayers?" Lizzie asked, not one to like change.

"I think it's exciting, and I look forward to hearing about it on the weekends," Josie said. Recently, Josie had sealed up her magic as she'd fallen hard into the dark magics. Now, she wanted to go to a school that was normal, so she could feel normal, too. Lizzie didn't like it, but she was trying to be understanding about it, which Josie appreciated.

Lizzie gave her sister a sharp look. "What do you mean?" she asked.

"Well, Aunt Elena and Uncle Damon said I could stay in town with them, so I can really focus on going to a normal school. Mom suggested it, and Dad said it was okay," Josie said.

"You're just going to abandon me?" Lizzie asked. When Josie was going to school at Mystic Falls High, she came home every day, so Lizzie could see her.

Josie tried not to roll her eyes at her sister's dramatics. "Mom is back now—thanks to the witch Willow and her slayer friends, so you won't be alone," she reminded her.

Lizzie smiled at that. Having their mom back was the best thing ever. Not only was the school packed, but their mom had made some new contacts that seemed to want to help keep her from going crazy and killing Josie someday. Of course, with her sister's recent fall into dark magic, it might not be Lizzie that followed the Gemini tradition. They had recently learned that Josie was actually the stronger of the two when she went dark. It was why she was currently trying to stay off the magics entirely—a thing Lizzie thought was crazy. However, she was trying to be supportive since Josie was the better sister. She was always putting her wants and needs ahead of Lizzie, so it was Lizzie's turn to do the same.

"I am happy about that," she said.

"And Dad said he picked a non-slayer to be your new roommate," Josie shared.

"What? That's your room!" Lizzie protested.

"Yes, I guess the head slayer, Miss Summers, has a sister who wants to stay here during the week and go home on weekends to the new slayer house they're gonna live in," Josie said.

MG and Kaleb came up behind them to hear the comment. "You mean there are more deadly hot babes coming to this school?" MG asked, feeling torn. He and Kaleb were both members of the Super Squad. Attractive African American vampires who Lizzie could always count on. MG was the sweetheart of the two, and Kaleb the more pragmatic.

"Twenty here and twenty will be attending Mystic High School," Josie said. "Ten others are doing online schooling of some kind and don't want to attend."

"How do you know so much?" Kaleb asked her.

"I listen when adults talk," she said with a smirk.

MG grinned. "And we're sure none of these girls will try to slay Kaleb or me?" he asked.

"They only killed vampires from demons that turn to dust after they're slayed," a voice said. They turned to see a stunning, willowy brunette approach.

Lizzie frowned as yet another attractive teenager joined the student body. Her blue eyes were friendly and intelligent, though, so she bit back her instinct to tell the girl to mind her own business.

"Hello," Josie said, giving her a warm smile. "I'm Josie Saltzman, and this is my twin sister, Lizzie. That's MG and Kaleb."

"Oh, you're the headmasters' daughters, right?" the girl asked.

Josie nodded. "Yes, we are," she said.

"I'm Dawn Summers," she said.

"Oh, you're Lizzie's new roommate," Josie said.

"For five days a week, yes," Dawn said. "I know it's gotta be rough having your twin leave you." She gave Lizzie a look of sympathy. It was clear that the two sisters were fraternal as Lizzie was slightly taller and looked nothing like her dark-haired sister even if she probably bleached her hair that shade of blonde. She eyed the two guys with interest. It seemed forever since she'd met any guys her own age. One kept his hair braided and the other more natural. They seemed friendly enough.

"Oh, well, I'm a big girl," Lizzie said.

"I promise not to be a bother," Dawn said. "I'm used to living with those crazy, high energy slayers, so I don't take up much space. I won't be bringing too much of my stuff."

"Welcome to our school," MG said, smiling. He was thinking of transferring to Mystic Falls since he'd alienated everyone recently by keeping something important from Hope Mikaelson. Now, though, he was not sure what he wanted to do.

"So what are you guys? Witch, wolf, or vamps?" Dawn said. "I can't believe that werewolves and vampires co-exist in this place."

"We're vamps," Kaleb said. "You're sure we don't need to worry about any of the slayers?"

"Don't worry," Dawn said. "My sister would totally kick the ass of any girl who laid a hand on you guys."

"Oh, your sister is Buffy Summers, the new self-defense teacher and peer counselor," Lizzie said.

"Yes," she said, pointing at a small woman talking to their mother.

"She's a mystical warrior who has saved the world several times?" Josie asked in surprise. She'd listened to her parents talk but hadn't yet met the new teacher.

"Tiny but deadly," Dawn said.

"I can't believe we have twenty more girls to compete with," Lizzie complained.

"Hey, imagine how I feel," Dawn said. "I'm entirely human."

"I thought you were a witch," Josie said.

"Not much of one," she said. "I have mystical blood and can open portals."

"Seriously? That's so cool!" MG said.

Lizzie frowned, not liking MG admiring anyone but her.

"Where's Hope?" Josie asked.

"Probably in her room," Lizzie said. "She's not been very social these days."

"How she going to take not having to be the one to save everyone?" MG wondered.

"Who's Hope?" Dawn asked.

"She's the tribid," Lizzie said.

"Huh?" Dawn said, looking confused.

"She's a mega powerful witch, but she her father was a hybrid. That makes her a tribid," Lizzie said.

"What's a hybrid?" Dawn asked.

"A werewolf and a vampire," Josie said. "It's rare. There's not many around. Most have died."

"Hope's blood can turn a were into one, though," Kaleb said.

"Why would a werewolf want that?" Dawn asked.

"If they didn't want to change on the full moon," Josie explained. "It's very painful. Also, vampires have perks besides immortality. Their blood can heal."

"Really?" Dawn asked. "That's so different than the vamps I've known."

"Come on, Dawn. We'll show you to your new room," Josie said.

Dawn felt excited to be in the school. The place was big, but not old and musty like some of the castles in the UK. That there were so many new things to learn made her very excited. She couldn't believe how quickly things had fallen into place. Some huge estate called the Lockwood estate had been for sale for years, and Buffy worked a deal to rent it for six months with an option to buy. It was on some land, so they could expand if they decided to buy. To not be around only slayers all the time was going to be so nice.

Buffy was being shown her new office by Caroline. It was so hard for her to get used to the fact that Caroline was a vampire as she was so not like any Buffy had known. Of course, Harmony was not a good person to compare anyone to.

"This will be great, Caroline," she said. It was a great space, and she was pleasantly surprised.

"We're very happy to have you and the girls here even if my daughter Lizzie is complaining about not enough boys now," Caroline said with a grin.

Buffy laughed. "That is always a complaint my girls utter often, too," she said. "Hey, can I ask you a personal question?"

"Sure," Caroline said. "I don't have many secrets anymore."

"I was just wondering if you and the headmaster were a couple," Buffy said. Although the headmaster was sporting unsightly facial hair, Buffy wasn't immune to his clear sex appeal. She'd been single too long to ignore it.

Caroline shook her head. "No. We did give it a try when the girls were young—although I don't think they remember that," she said. "But I was always in love with Stefan. They when he died, I just couldn't see loving another man. For my type of vampire, our feelings are always heightened. You feel joy much more intensely. and grief can be overwhelming."

"That's not good," Buffy said. "Losing someone you love is hard enough. When my mom died, I wanted to die. Then we had this insaneo hell god trying to kill Dawn, so I had to push my grief aside and focus on keeping her alive. It was one crisis after another."

Caroline felt a kindship with her. "My mom died, too," she said. "Brain cancer."

"My mom also had a brain tumor. It wasn't cancerous, but when they removed it, she had an aneurysm," Buffy said. It was strange having so much in common with a vampire even if she wasn't the soulless demon kind.

"I didn't handle my mom's death at all. I turned off my humanity over it," Caroline admitted. "That's when my kind of vampires can turn into your kind. Our humanity is what keeps us from being murderers. Stefan, though, pulled me back from my dark place."

"I wish I could've met him," she said.

"This school is something he would've loved," Caroline said. "Not only is it a safe place for my girls, but it's a place that I feel can honor his memory. He taught me how to control my blood lust, and how to be normal when I became a vampire. Now I can help young vampires do the same thing."

"Do you have any students struggling with that here? Students I should know about?" Buffy asked.

"Well, the only one that is really struggling right now is Hope," Caroline said. "Her father was a reformed bad boy."

"A hottie, huh?" Buffy asked, grinning as she recognized the look on Caroline's face.

"Totally. He had this dimple," she said, pointing to his cheek. "He was an artist, and so is Hope. He was impetuous and quick to react. So is Hope. Her mother was a werewolf, who became a vampire when witches murdered her on the day that she gave birth to Hope. Hope's blood can turn a werewolf into a hybrid, which is how Hayley, her mom, became one. That's also what Klaus, Hope's dad was. He was the strongest of all our kind and the most diabolical. When I first met him, he literally murdered my best friend's aunt in a blood ritual that he then sacrificed her in."

"Seriously? How could he reform? That sounds pretty unforgiveable," Buffy asked.

"I'm not sure how to explain him," Caroline said. "He was only ever good to me. Elena didn't stay dead thanks to some magic and her father tying his life to hers. A few times, he saved my life and the lives of my friends. It was his older brother, Elijah, though, that most everyone respected. He was the only one that could really influence Klaus. About two years ago, though, Hope was infected with an evil spirit. One that had possessed her as a child. It was so evil that Klaus and his three siblings all took a part of it inside them. However, Hope got tired of her family never being able to be with her due to it always wanting to be back inside of her, so she drew it into herself. Unfortunately, it was too strong for, so Klaus took it into himself and then killed himself. His brother Elijah, refusing to leave him, followed him in death."

"Wow," Buffy said. "That's—I'm not sure what to say about that."

"Yea, I know," Caroline said. "Her mother died shortly before that. She still has two aunts and one uncle alive. Most recently, her boyfriend, Landon, has died. He was a phoenix, so him dying and coming back is not new. This time, though, she sent him to a prison world with his best friend, who'd been murdered by the Necromancer. He's not coming back—I don't think. Either way, I think she is someone you should talk to."

"Most definitely," Buffy said, feeling instant sympathy for the girl. "How old is she?"

"She's not yet eighteen. Nearly a year older than my girls," Caroline said.

"Well, I will be ready tomorrow, so send her to me first thing," Buffy said.

"I will," Caroline said. She was glad to have someone who had experience dealing with extraordinary teenagers to help her. Rick and Hope were so close that she felt her daughters, especially Lizzie, would not handle her drawing the orphan girl close. Lizzie already hated how much time Rick spent with Hope. Of course, the past year, her daughters had become closer to Hope. She hoped Buffy could help her.

******The Next Day******

Hope Mikaelson faced another day without Landon, and she just wanted to go back to bed. Then the thought would rise up inside her that she would find a way to bring him back. She didn't try with her dad because she knew he was with Elijah. Her mother was with them or Jackson, her late husband. Landon, though, didn't have anyone but his foster brother and her. She wasn't ready to say goodbye to him.

"Hope, Mom says you have to go see the new peer counselor, Miss Summers," Lizzie said as Hope drank some orange juice.

"Seriously?" Hope asked.

"I'm just the messenger," Lizzie said. "It'll be good, though, 'cause you can tell us how the new teacher is."

"Glad I can help," she said glumly as she got up. Caroline had been gone so long that Hope forgot how meddlesome she could be. Hope also knew from experience that she was even more stubborn than Lizzie, so there was no going around what she wanted. Resigned, she knocked on the office door that she knew was Miss Summers.

"Come in."

Hope opened the door and glanced in surprise at the petite woman. This was a famed warrior? The woman was stylishly dressed with her blonde hair pulled back in a long ponytail. Earrings hung from her ears, and she wore a small cross necklace. She stood and held out her hand to Hope.

"You must be Hope. I'm Buffy Summers," she said, smiling.

Hope took her hand and was bombarded with images from the slayer's life. That didn't happen to her normally, so it took her off guard. It hit Hope with the knowledge that Buffy Summers knew what loss was. She knew what it felt like to have everyone counting on her. Startled, Hope pulled back her hand. "Nice to meet you," she murmured.

"Have a seat, Hope," Buffy said, smiling at her. "I think we have a lot to talk about."

Hope sat down. "You think you can help me?" Hope asked.

"I'd like to, yes," Buffy said.

Hope gave her a considering glance and then nodded. Let's see what the new teacher was made of. "I need help in bringing my boyfriend back from the prison world I sent him to," she said.

Buffy pulled out her cell phone. "That sounds like a problem for my best friend, Willow. She's a very powerful witch," she said.

Hope gave her a searching look and realized that she meant it.

"Will, can you come to the school? I have a student here with a problem that needs a magical solution," Buffy said as she connected with her friend.

And just like that, Hope relaxed. The new peer counselor wasn't so bad.

"Willow is on her way," Buffy said. "Willow doesn't really know how to fail. She's the one who made all the potential slayers real slayers. I'm not sure there's anything she can't do if she puts her mind to it."

The dark cloud that had been hovering over Hope became to recede as she felt real hope begin to grow.

Landon would return to her.

She could report back to Lizzie that the new counselor wasn't so bad after all.

*****The End*****

Although I do have a desire to write a longer story with the Salvatore School and the Slayers, it would probably be expanding my story "A New Forever" as I left the Buffy/Klaus pairing undone in that one. If you enjoyed this one-shot, feel free to leave a review/comment. If you are inspired to write your own story, feel free. Thanks for reading!
