Chapter 1: Lights Out
It started with a fever at Noah Puckerman's house when Liza Marie Anderson woke up at three in the morning burning up. As Noah drove his truck to the hospital while Blaine Anderson held Liza Marie in his arms. Noah and Blaine were praying that she would be okay but feared she wouldn't be. When they get to the nearest hospital, because they were two men with a child they are made to wait in the waiting room. But Noah who was holding Liza Marie refused to move and says, "I am Airman Noah Puckerman and my boss Michael Young donates money to this hospital every year! My father-in-law Russell Fabray also donates money here! Now if you don't want me to call them! I suggest you show me to the nearest open bed in ICU!"
Soon Blaine and Noah are being lead to an open bed in ICU and as the nurses work on Liza Marie. Noah and Blaine hear Burt say, "I'm Congressman Burt Hummel and this is my son! His daughter was just brought in! Now, take us to where they are or I will call my good friend Michael Young!" This makes Blaine say, "God, Puck, I'm so glad you are straight right now!" This made Noah say, "Man, don't even say it. I know about you not getting any when Kurt is pissed at you and news like that could put you in the dog house."
An hour later, Burt and Noah are in the waiting room with Blaine waiting to hear about Liza Marie. When they hear her screaming, "Dada, turn on the lights! it's too dark in here! Please, Dada turn on the lights!" Then the men hear things being thrown around as Liza Marie says, "Liar! I'm not blind! Now, turn on the goddamn lights assholes!" Then Liza Marie screams in anger before saying, "I want Nono! Get the hell away from me! I said I want Nono!" Soon Kurt walks into the waiting room crying and Noah goes to where Liza Marie is in ICU.
The moment Noah goes back to where Liza Marie was. He takes her hand and she starts to cry before saying, "Hold me, Nono!" Soon Noah lowers the rail on the bed and lays down with Liza Marie as she goes to sleep. As he watches her sleep, he gets a text from Quinn saying, "I'm here with Carole in the waiting room. Blaine told us what happened. How is she?" Noah takes a picture of Liza Marie asleep and sent it to Quinn with the message, "She just went to sleep. God, Babe, she's blind and afraid of the dark! God, this is so unfair! Tell Kurt I want to talk to him."
Soon Quinn and Kurt are standing by Liza Marie's bed and Noah says, "Man, I know this is making you think of your mom right now. But remember this is Rachel and Blaine's daughter here. She is too stubborn to die. Ha, plus, she is strong like me and your dad." This makes Kurt chuckle before saying, "Puck, you do know she has a crush on you right? Plus, she has a Hulk doll she named Lil Puck. That's the only reason you are in that bed and not me or Blaine! And if you were trying to make me feel better it didn't work!" Then Kurt storms off and Quinn follows him after looking over at Noah with Liza Marie.
At one point in the night, Noah is asleep holding Liza Marie and Rachel comes in with Quinn to see her. Before saying, "Quinn, I know she has a crush on Puck, but I mean. When is someone going to tell Puck she's not Beth? I mean Blaine and Kurt have told me about Puck acting like a third father to her. Even Burt and Carole have noticed it." This makes Quinn say, "Can we not talk about this now, Rachel? Besides, I have tried to talk to Puck about the fact that he acts like she is his daughter. He refuses to listen and thinks I am crazy. Plus, it doesn't help that we all live in Washington now."
When Liza Marie was moved to a room Noah was the first to come to see her and says to Blaine, "Sorry, man, look I know she is not Beth. I never got to bond with Beth the way I have with Liza Marie here. I overheard Rachel and Quinn talking about it. I know that must have made you feel like shit hearing her ask for me. If you want me to leave I will." Then Liza Marie says, "No, Nono, don't go! I know I am not Aunt Beth, but I need you here! I don't care that you are not my daddy! Okay? I love you and you can tell everybody to kiss my ass! Because I don't care if they don't like us spending time together! I'm blind, not stupid! So, I love you more! Who cares?! I feel safe around you and I don't care what those assholes think!"
As she is saying this, the others come in and Burt says, "Watch your language, young lady! You might be sick, but I am not going to stand here and listen to you be disrespectful to your Papa!" Liza Marie just raises her eyebrow the way Noah does and crosses her arms before saying, "Then leave, old man!" This makes Noah get up and walk out crying only to hear Liza Marie say, "Nono, come back!" Over and over. It was Kurt that found Noah in the hospital chapel still crying. Before he says, "The day my dad left, that was the last thing I said to him. I idolized the asshole for years and tried to be just like him. Then I meet your dad and became just like him. I tried to replace my dad with yours's and now Liza Marie is doing that to Blaine. I'm sorry man. I never meant to come between you and Liza Marie. I respect Mr. H. but I doubt he'd want me as a son." Then Noah hears Burt clear his throat before saying, "You became my son when Finn did, Puck and Liza Marie told me she was sorry for what she said. She also wanted me to go find you and tell you she is sorry for making you cry."
