Regret Prompt

Last Cookie

Ruby trekked through the forest in the dark of night. The silence was palpable as she clenched Crescent Rose in her left hand, ready to strike. There would be no turning back after this, and she was going to be sure her wrong-doer was going to feel the full force of her vengeance.

Even now being a full-fledged adult, Ruby still had a strong sense of justice and was never one to back down from a fight, and that's exactly what she intended to bring. It wasn't often that Ruby herself was the victim of a crime, especially nowadays, tucked away in the sanctity of Patch, her home island. That's what made this crime even more unforgivable.

She stopped herself as she heard the bushes in front of her rustling. Without a second thought she leaped forward and brought her mighty scythe-sniper down heavily on the poor plant, causing the forest animals hiding inside to scurry away. Damn it, not him. Ruby sighed as she failed to capture her target once more, but it was no matter, he had to come home some time.

She began walking once more in another direction, continuing her search again.

Far off in the distance, Jaune peeked from behind a tall oak tree, having witnessed the shrubbery murder with his own eyes. His legs shook nervousness and his breathing was hitched, anxious with every breath. He relaxed his grip and himself slightly as Ruby had seemingly disappeared in another direction, giving him a moment's reprieve.

He lowered himself to his knees as he exhaled a long sigh. How could I be so stupid? He wondered. This wasn't his first rodeo and he should have been more aware of his surroundings, but now he was hiding for his life.

Jaune reached into his pocket and looked at his scroll and taking notice of the time. He smiled weakly and stood once more. He might survive this whole ordeal after all.

"Going somewhere?" A voice spoke behind him.

Jaune froze in horror as he turned around. As expected, he was greeted by a pair of silver eyes filled with a rage that twinkled in the half-moonlight.

"R-R-Ruby," He stuttered fretfully "my beautiful wife, I found you."

Ruby raised her weapon towards the blond, causing him to back up towards the tree he was previously hanging on. She wasted no time pinning him there with her weapon, refusing to allow his escape once more.

"Nice try Jaune," Ruby spoke with a monotone. "but you're not getting away with this one."

Jaune gulped with nervous anticipation as he looked around, trying to find a viable exit, but there was no such luck in store for him. He was going to regret his actions if she had her way.

"Do you have any last words?" She posed toward the terrified boy.

"I—" Jaune attempted as a beep came from his pocket. Jaune's eyes widened with realization as he reached for his pocket against the force of Ruby's Crescent Rose. "Scroll!"

"That's your last word?" Ruby questioned with a raised eyebrow.

"N-No! Just let me have my scroll!" Jaune nearly begged.

Ruby sighed with exhaustion as she pulled away slightly. "Fine, but if I have to chase you again, you're going to get it twice as bad."

Jaune relaxed slightly as he reached into his pocket once more and retrieved the scroll. He examined it with a smile as he flashed it to Ruby to see.

'Delivery Completed.'

"I'm confused, Jaune."

"I ordered a new box for you through a delivery app! They're back at the house now! Baked fresh from the bakery in town!" Jaune pleaded his case.

A moment of silence passed between the two. Jaune could only stand jelly-legged as he waited for her judgment. Was it enough to save him? Would he get the chance to learn his lesson?

Before he could think further, Ruby retracted her weapon back into its standard, non-combat mode and placed it onto her back. She strolled up to Jaune as he continued to use the tree to support himself and planted a soft kiss on his cheek.

Jaune was caught off guard by it and decided to remain as still and calm as possible in case she was playing some sort of game with him. But that never came…

"Silly," Ruby spoke with an energetic smile. "that's all you had to say."

With that she turned around and began skipping towards the direction of their home as Jaune could hear her clapping and speaking to herself.

"Fresh cookies, here I come!"

Jaune collapsed to his knees once more after a few minutes and sat there alone. He knew the last cookie was sacred to Ruby and now he was sure to never eat it again. He wasn't sure what would come of this action, but one thing was for sure, he wasn't going to trifle with the legendary reaper in red again. For he had looked death in the eyes and would live to tell about it.

"Thank Oum for delivery apps… I owe you one, Tai."
