A View to Stop a Murder
Bonnie ran her lungs off while running. Her breaths were cut short. Perhaps it was the expression magic. She had nearly broken Kol's all bones. The fact that Kol had tried to kill her didn't soothe her conscience. She was feeling death every time she used the expression magic. Perhaps it was coming from the dead people who had been sacrificed or perhaps death was coming to get her.
Her phone's ringing interrupted her thoughts. It was Caroline.
'Bonnie Bennett, they said you left early. I swear even one balloon is missing I will know.'
'Caroline,' Bonnie started and it was all she could say.
Realizing her friend's faint voice Caroline became worried. 'Bonnie, are you okay?'
'Not really. Kol tried to kill me.'
'Where is he now? Just tell me where you are, I am coming to get you.'
'No no, listen, I took care of it. But since he failed, I think he might try his chance on Jeremy.'
'Oh my god! Just go to Elena's house. I'll call Klaus.' Caroline nearly ended the call if Bonnie hadn't stop her.
'There is something else. Elena wants Jeremy to kill Kol to complete the tattoo.'
'What?' Caroline didn't want to believe it. This wasn't something Elena would do. Killing Kol would mean the death of everyone he had turned which had meant thousands of vampires. Not to mention, her aunt Jenna had died because of a ritual. Surely, Elena would be more considerate.
'You heard me, Caroline. I can't do this anymore. Every time I channel magic, I feel the death of those who had died because of this stupid cure. I can't continue. I think it will be the death of me.'
That made Caroline more frantic.
'You are not going to die! I won't let that happen. Everything is going to be okay Bonnie. I'll gather Klaus. Just try to stop Elena and Kol, okay? If Klaus loses her brother, he won't show anyone mercy. I won't be able to stop him.'
He kept their bodies safe for centuries, Caroline thought to herself. Sure he had daggered them but no one who didn't care about his family would have done that. If Elena would do this there was no going back. They would unleash a beast inside him that won't stop at killing.
'Okay," Bonnie said weakly. 'I am on it.'
As Bonnie ended the call, there were a lot of thoughts in Caroline's mind but only one thing came from her mouth.
'How did we become these people?'
….
Bonnie tried calling Elena but there was no answer. Great Bonnie thought and she kept running. When she finally reached Elena's house, the sight she saw was terrifying. Elena was holding a meat blade to hold Kol who was clearly in pain. The vervain spray Jeremy had used was burning Kol's skin as he screamed.
'Stop,' Bonnie shouted.
Jeremy was about to strike Kol with a white oak but Bonnie's voice made him stop for a moment. Elena looked at Bonnie with wide eyes but kept holding Kol with a meat blade. Just in time, Caroline and Klaus arrived.
'Make one move and I will hunt you all to your ends!' Klaus roared seeing the painful position Kol is in.
'Now, Jer!' said Elena.
Jeremy was about to strike Kol with white oak but Bonnie raised her hands and burned the stake. The piece of white oak turned into ashes. Kol looked at Bonnie with a shocked face, trying to understand why the witch saved her even though he tried to kill her. Then he recovered from the shock and threw Elena to the ground, he was so strong that he nearly pushed Elena to the living room.
Elena stood up from the ground and looked at Bonnie. 'Bonnie, what the hell are you doing?
'What the hell is she doing? What the hell are you doing?' Caroline couldn't hold herself any longer, she came into the living room and yelled at Elena. 'Is your humanity so important that you are willing to let thousands of innocents die? Even Katherine didn't go that far. What is wrong with you?'
While they were all distracted by Elena's immoral action, Kol pulled himself together and took the meat blade.
'I am going to chop off that arm, Gilbert.' Kol smiled almost psychotically and ran towards Jeremy.
Bonnie raised her towards him and an invisible force hit Kol.
'Enough' Bonnie yelled and made eye contact with Kol first time since she saved him. 'I saved your life, you owe me. So leave him alone' she said slowly emphasizing each word.
Kol looked at the witch's green eyes. She had saved his life after he had tried to kill her. Kol knew she probably did it to save the ungrateful doppelganger from Klaus' wrath. That didn't change the fact that he owed her.
'Just this once little witch, I'll let this go. For you.'
'But I won't let this go'. Everyone looked at Klaus. 'Apparently, when you killed Finn and I let it go, you have taken my mercy for granted,' he hissed.
'You said you were going to put him down too' Elena tried to defend himself.
'I was going to make him suffer on my own terms' Klaus roared with the anger of almost losing his brother permanently.
Caroline glared at Elena, her gaze was silently telling her to shut up. No need to fuel Klaus' rage.
'Klaus please,' Caroline went toward him and held his arm comfortingly. 'This cure is ruining us.'
Klaus calmed down and considered what Caroline was saying. Then he heard Kol's voice in his head.
This cure is ruining us. And it hasn't been even found yet.
His brother nearly died thinking that he never cared about him. Was the cure worth it?
Elena broke the silence. 'Why did you do it, Bonnie? Why did you tell them?'
Bonnie seemed regretful at first. But then she gathered her strength and stared Elena in the eye determinately. 'I am done, Elena. I am done with this mission for the cure. Sacrificing lives for your gains, killing people for rituals, this isn't what my grandmother would do. And the Elena who was my friend wouldn't do that either.'
'We weren't people like this' Caroline barged in coming towards Elena again. 'You weren't a person like this. How could you think of sacrificing lives after what happened to your Aunt Jenna?'
This made Elena's blood boil. 'How could you stand side by side with the man who killed her?'
'At least he tries to be better! At least he cares about the lives of people who he loves! You were so obsessed with this cure that you didn't notice it throws Bonnie's life in danger!' Caroline yelled.
'Easy love, this is cure mission is over.'
Jeremy barged in. 'Bonnie we didn't know. If I knew…'
Kol beat him up to hit throwing the blade in his hand to the ground. 'Oh don't even start mate. We know you have soft spot for dead girls.' It was as if he was trying to rile up Jeremy on purpose so he will have an excuse to smack him down.
Jeremy was about launch himself forward but he was stopped by Elena. Elena shook her head no. They were in enough trouble already.
'You two have made a fatal mistake today. And mark my words, you will pay the consequences of your actions. You will get out of this house eventually. And the moment you think you are safe and no longer you have to look back I will descend upon you.'
'Klaus please,' Caroline tried to reason with him but this time Klaus ignored her. 'Kol, we are leaving.'
'I am touched brother, I never knew you cared this much.'
'Of course, I do you, idiot, you are my blood and my family. Always and forever.'
….
The next morning Bonnie woke up intending to avoid Elena and Jeremy. Yet when she took her phone in her hands, she realized they were not over with her yet.
-Bonnie, please we have to talk.
Jeremy
-Bonnie please, I realized I went too far. Can we talk about this? You know that I love you right?
Elena
She could talk to Jeremy. Even though his absent-mindedness to her situation, she knew he cared about her. Elena cared about her too, she guessed. But Bonnie just didn't have the energy to listen to her reasons or fight her battles for her and being a secondary character in her story.
Then as if that is not enough she got a message from an unknown number.
-Greetings little witch,
I compelled Matt-boy to give me your number. After all that had happened a conversation is an order, don't you think Bonnie? I will be waiting for you in the mansion. You won't regret it.
Kol
What a great way to start a day, Bonnie thought. As crazy it was, she thought of going to Kol first. It shouldn't be hard with him. He was probably going to thank her.
She packed her stuff and readied herself to go to Mikaelson's mansion.
...
When she was parking her car, she saw Caroline's car was also there. Caroline hadn't told her that she was going to come here. Perhaps, she didn't want to give her more stress than she already had.
There was no need to knock on the door. It opened by itself.
She entered inside and suddenly Kol appeared behind her. Startled, she took a step back. Kol must have noticed because he had that smug smile on his face.
'Welcome.'
'Is Caroline here?'
'Yes. The blondie is here, probably begging my brother to spare the doppelganger and baby-hunter. Come sit.' He gestured to the armchair in the living room.
Try to keep her face stoic Bonnie sat and asked 'What are you going to do with them?'
'Well, I am still considering chop off Gilbert's arm. Klaus said he will find make the doppelganger suffer for what she did. And if baby Gilbert realizes that the cure is not worth bringing hell on earth and quits being his sister's shadow, I might forgive him for what he tried to do to me. I am sure I can find new ways to annoy him other than chopping his arm off.'
Bonnie lifted one of her brows. 'You know this thing looks certainly turned in your favor.'
'Oh, don't look at me with those judgy little eyes. I deserve to have some appreciation and attention after being daggered for the century and almost dying by burning.'
'So Klaus decided to stop looking for the cure, just like that? What about Rebekah?'
'Well since she has no backup, she can't try to look for the cure alone. Anyway, I want to talk about us and the things I can do for you.'
He smiled and gave a grimoire to her. He was acting like he had found a new friend to play with.
She tried to hold her guard but the excitement rushed over her body as she held the grimoire.
'This is ancient! The oldest grimoire I have ever seen.
'Thought you might like it. It was Ayanna's. Your ancestor's.'
'Why are you showing me this?'
'Since you saved my life and turned the table in my favor, I owe you a debt. I know things about expression, Bonnie. But the triangle isn't completed yet. So there is still hope about your situation. I can contact my resources and I have a lot of them.' He said smugly.
'Look Kol, I want the same thing you want, to stop this mission for the cure and to keep Silas away from Earth. And I want to live more than you know, more than anything. But if you do anything to endanger my friends' life, I will make you pay regardless of the consequences.'
Kol wasn't taken aback by her words, he looked at her like he was expecting her to say that. Still, he looked a little disappointed that he couldn't get back at Gilberts. At least not now. Not until he gained Bonnie's trust. He was only going to promise for himself, not for Klaus anyway. He huffed in defeat.
'As long as they don't look for the cure, I won't touch them. You have my word. So, will you let me help you? Do we have a deal?'
Bonnie didn't trust him fully. The last time an original made a promise to them, Elena had become a vampire. But Elena and Salvatores weren't trustworthy either. This time, she was doing something just for herself. To live. And she wanted that. She deserved that. If there was the slightest chance that Kol could help her, she was going to use it.
'Yes, we have a deal.' Bonnie extended her hand for a handshake.
'Excellent.' Instead of shaking Bonnie's hand, Kol placed a kiss on it.
'Don't get ahead of yourself Kol.'
