I made this post on Reddit a while back and wanted to upload it here, just to give my thoughts on some characters in RWBy that I think was treated rather...bad.
Now for a quick review my thoughts on RWBY is that it's...ok; I would say I enjoyed most of it but I couldn't ignore the glaring problems this show had, mainly with their characters and how everyone treats them in both the show AND the FNDM. Feel free to debate me if you want, just try to have good points is all I ask...seriously, the one's I got on Reddit weren't that good and looking back I could've probably ended all of them.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy and read this over!
Ok, this post is mainly gonna talk about how I think the show has treated the characters of Ironwood, Adam, Raven, Neo, Ozpin, and even Whitley cause imma say it right now, they WEREN'T treated the best and for some reason most of the community hates them.
Now you are free to disagree and give you thoughts and I'll do my best to answer and reply I get...if some person does see this but to that one person who does I'll reply! Anyways, onto some of my favorite characters(all top 10)
Ozpin:
Ozpin is seen as some EVIL and TERRIBLE person because of the many things he's done in the story but realistically...what has he done that was so wrong? Seriously.
A ton of people are gonna bring up "He lied to Team RWBY about Salem" ok and? If anything lying to them was practical in his favor because in all honesty WHO THE HELL WOULD WANNA WORK WITH HIM?! If he told them outright "Hey my crazy ex has an army of Grimm at her disposal that can probably take out a kingdom in numbers, has top tier huntsmen, a MAIDEN who could probably solo all of you, has magic that beat me at damn near my peak, and is IMMORTAL!" what do you think anyone would have done? If anything I wouldn't want to fight her, and I doubt they would-maybe minus Ruby-if they knew full front.
I didn't even get to the fact of how they need the relics to not get into Salem's hands so she can't summon the Gods and end humanity, or even the fact he needs them as well. Seriously if THAT was the thing we should jump him about then its really sad, as now Salem's closer to winning more than ever and at this point lying to gain an army should work, as in a battle of life or death you can't let everyone just know everything.
Then we get how everyone just jumps on the man and reacts EXACTLY how he thought they would after essentially forcing him to relieve a very personal and traumatic time for him as he's on his knees crying and locking himself away; understandable response form both parties, that's one thing I'll give them.
But after a while they shouldn't still be mad at him. If anything this point should've been resolved end of Volume 6-mid Volume 7 with highball inside of waiting until towards the end of Volume 8 for him to apologize...for what?
For lying about this fight? A fight most likely would result in humanities end if they don't do anything THAT THEY WENT ON ANYWAYS?! Oz has to apologize for trying to help everyone and dumb things down so they can have some hope and they still don't trust him? They should understand all the shit he went through to save humanity and them yet they treat him as a bad guy.
Also birds, that was just really dumb how they tried to make him a bad guy for that. At least bring up Pyrrha and how he was about to send her on a life or death mission where's she'll be hunted instead of what we got!
In the end Oz did basically nothing wrong and should be understood more. I could write a whole analysis on Ozpin and his themes, presence and such but I need to get onto the others. Anyways as brought up a bit...
Raven:
Raven did NOTHING wrong! Seriously when it came to Salem she was the one right in the end, they couldn't fight Salem and only could delay her for a bit, and even then she got what she wanted!
She's called a coward, weak, and such for deciding to hide out and not fight but when it came down to it Salem's is literally the most haxed person in the verse so I can't blame her for not fighting. Seriously, how is fighting someone who is immortal, has magic that bested the strongest male on the planet, has an army of Grimm AND powerful henchmen(some of which has a Maiden, a genius, and some of the most hax abilities in the series) and she is wrong for not wanting to fight? Even excluding her henchman Salem could fold ANYONE so could you blame her?
I hope when Yang sees Raven again she gets on her knees and begs for forgiveness, she wanted to call out Raven for being a coward to making BEST GIRL-arguably-cry because she didn't want to fight. Oh because it went so well for Yang when the time came; mind you, if it wasn't for Hazel and OZ/Oscar her, Jaune, and Ren would be dead...not to mention if Salem actually cared Yang would be DEAD!
Some will say "She left Yan-" we don't know why fully, and even then she would not only save her life against Neo BUT also watch her her a bit, at least she cared a bit-further explained more by her fucking Semblance STILL connected to Yang, and if someone says why did she leave her family maybe you forgot the Tribe WAS her family too-, I kinda hope we get Raven back in Volume's 9 and 10 but I don't wanna see how they either
A; Ruin her
B; Give her a redemption she DOESN'T NEED!
Essentially, Raven needs more love and less hate for her character. Like Oz I could do a whole thing with Raven but others probably could explain it better than I ever could.
Whitley:
A bit smaller but trying to say Whitley needed redemption isn't it, he's done NOTHING bas except being a small snark but that makes him "bad"? I seen people praise this change but he didn't need it. Hell, someone tell me anything bad he's done, I'll wait.
In Volume 8 he's been threatened by his Weiss and had a sword pointing at him if you defend Weiss you probably ate bad chalk as a kid just saying-, he tried to help and got sent to his room, get getting criticized on his attitude when he's just fine, and nearly got killed...my boy's been through enough.
Everyone seems to forget that Whitley is Winter and Weiss's little brother, one that probably can't fight/has aura or maybe doesn't even have a semblance at the moment so he can't really escape his father's watchful eye, who maybe learned from his mistakes with his two older daughters and had Whitley in more of a grasp; hell this is shown a bit as Jacques seems to be the only person Whitley really knew/been around for most of his life as Winter left early and Weiss left later and probably didn't want to do much with him. So Whitley didn't have much escape and if someone says "He's always hated t-" Whitley's anywhere from 14-15 and this is being told by Weiss, we DON'T know much of his perspective as to his views on his siblings.
Also if you hate on Whitley for his attitude...no, just no.
Whitley didn't do anything wrong and needs to be protected, do NOT defend Weiss's actions towards him, don't.
Adam:
This one hurts me, this one fucking hurts cause Adam was just done...dirty. He went from this leader revolutionist who was awesome-he continued during his rule of the White Fang- to this crazy ex boyfriend when he hadn't shown as so much as an interest in Blake until Volume 5...unless you count Volume 3 but even then could you?
Poor Adam, he got killed because of a ship essentially and if someone wants to argue otherwise most of Bumblebees scenes come because of Adam, think of that. Imma say it, I fucking HATE Bumblebee imo because it was developed terribly post Volume 3 and costed the life of one of your most potentially interesting characters to sate this ship.
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HIS FIGHT! Sure the animation was good and the characters made sense but in all honesty...he shouldn't have no COULDN'T have lost! Yang and Blake got folded by Adam last time they met and haven't increased in skill at all during the time cause mind you, Blake was back on Menagerie trying NOT to fight and Yang was bed ridden for most of the time until getting a new arm, and even then it wasn't much of an improvement besides MAYBE and I'm reaching MAYBE a tiny strength gain due to material. Now onto Adam who destroyed Blake with low effort and ONE SHOT Yang no difficulty -oh and before someone says he cheap shotted her SHE rushed him first to signal a fight and he responded, its like someone charging up a sneak attack and yelling about it getting shocked they got foiled, makes not sense- and with basically no training outside of some spars they shouldn't have been able to fight him even i 1.
Not to mention Yang's "PTSD" cause if that was a thing-which it isn't lets be real- she'd do even worse, which she doesn't mind you. The ONLY way this could make sense is if all of Team RWBY was here, cause that could make this fight even better!
1; Ruby - Can fight the man who harmed her friend and sister AND was a reason her team broke up
2; Weiss - Can face a direct consequence of her family/companies actions
3-; Yang- Can fight the man who gave her so much trauma
4; Blake - Can fight a demon of her past
This is the only way they should've been able to beat him, and even then I have SOME doubt though I'll throw in the towel for this. If not them then maybe only Qrow, cause Adam's just had that much potential ESPECIALLY with his semblance!
In fact his semblance being used only by his sword was dumb! Only that one sword could allow him to use his semblance?! What kind of weak shit is that?! Hell he has a fucking GUN as his sheath, he should've used that more! This fight could've been SO MUCH BETTER but they handled it terribly.
I could talk more about his transition from "Badass and even Sadistic Revolutionary" to "Crazy Ex" but what hasn't been said, its so dumb tbh. This COULD'VE worked, but it was handled bad imo.
In conclusion, Adam was wasted for a ship and was handled terribly, he deserves more, WAY more.
Neo:
Ok they're doing Neo dirty, and I don't even mean personality or design cause imo that's actually pretty fine dare I say good at the moment. What BUGS me about Neo is her decisions!
I could forgive her for not targeting Ruby at all in Atlas during Volume 7, I could get by saying she was in a room full of people and would probably get caught quickly, its a reach but I could accept it. But I CAN'T ignore everything after!
Neo, a character who outside of Maiden's is probably the most HAXED with her semblance-did you know she could possibly create clones?- she have been touched by ORJN? Not only did Oscar hit her after making his presence known-I know its an error but since its in the show I gotta use it, sorry- and got SPEED BLITZ by JAUNE...JAUNE! No, her whole thing is being nimble, quick, and strong as well as defensive so why was she losing as bad as she was? Neo realistically could beat almost all of the main group 1v1 or even on a team battle with her semblance-especially where they fought-but she didn't? Come on now.
Now for Volume 8 she loses to Maria and is one shotted by Penny...I could understand Penny but MARIA?! THE OLD LADY WHO LOOKS CAN BARELY WALK AND IS PRACTICALLY BLIND AND IS DESTROYING NEO NO DIFFICULTY?! Neo should've whopped Maria's ass and if someone comments "semblance and reflexes" Neo is fucking fast and squirming as fuck against an old lady who is WAY past her prime, its simply dumb and I'm sorry to my fellow Neo fans for this bad fight.
Now for her decisions it was arguably dumber. She gets the lamp, gives it to Cinder who gives it to Salem, before taking it back and giving it back to Cinder...WHY?!
If anything she should've used the damn lamp, would've made her backstabbing great and left her on a high note cause she's so fucking screwed right now! But she still works for Cinder and once she's about to "die" she asks for help, OF COURSE SHE'S NOT GONNA HELP YOU! WHY ASK?! ITS FUCKING CINDER!
I love Neo, but this Volume makes me start to dislike her because of how dumb she is! Design? Good! Overall personality? Good! What she does? Not so much!
At least she had a good fight against Ruby where she destroyed little red, that was nice at least. By the way for those who "hate" Neo for hurting Yang-especially if you were a Neo fan-then...no shit. She's a bad guy, one that's on a revenge quest and would take out ANYONE who got in her way not to mention yang got in front of the attack inside of going for Neo, she did it to herself.
Neo was done dirty throughout Volume 8 and the end of 7, how're you gonna do best girl like that? Well...previous, well I guess she's still best girl when it comes to hen-
Do Neo better, she doesn't deserve all of this writing shaft
Irondaddy...or Ironwood:
THEN WE GET TO THIS MAN!
The best character of Volume 7 if not the WHOLE series was reduced to some cartoon villain-not even a good one-during Volume 8?! Why?! He was always looking after the good of the world before deciding to NUKE a CITY just because he needs a Maiden to fight against Salem! Reasonable but why nuke a city?! Ironwood has NO change to show he'd go this mad!
Now I know for a FUCKING FACT some are gonna say "This was shown throughout the sh-" STOP LYING TO YOURSEVES! HE DID NOTHING WRONG! What did he do? Give me a reason I'll be waiting...None? Ok then cause let me tell ya what he DID do!
1; He created robotic soldiers to defend the people with in order to make sure nobody would have to risk their lives
2; Gave the people at Beacon a chance to leave and told everyone nobody would blame them if they left, as this was a terrible situation for these people who aren't even Huntsmen/Huntresses yet
3; Gave Yang a new arm out of the goodness of his heart
4; Defended Weiss at the event and even gave her advice
5; Tried throughout the entirety of Volume 7 to help the people as damn near EVERYONE went against him and ruined his plans
6; Defeated Watts and tried to make sure the most advanced city/ the city with the most strength, tech, and resources could live so they could fight later/keep the Vault and relic out of Salem's hand, which is actually some smart thinking
Some might say "He'll leave mantle to die!" and my answer is tough shit. Its a war against a lady who's damn near a God at this point with an army with people dying; war happens, people die, you need to protect the strong in order to save everyone else, that's just how it goes. Not to mention he didn't seem to want to leave Mantle, its just the result of something the bets plan at the time had.
Hell shooting Oscar was somewhat practical, as he along with the others he trusted betrayed him and lied about Salem AND the relic! He didn't know if he could trust him and even had Oz in him, who is we go by the FNDM's definition is evil, so Ironwood had to neutralize a threat! Simple!
Doesn't even helped he'd find out his Maiden died and the new one is in the possession of the people who betrayed and lied to him, one of his most loyal subordinates is dead, the one who killed him was a good friend of his and wants him dead, and Salem is here...I think he'd break at this point. Especially with the events of Volume 7 happening not too long ago.
Best part it...I can STILL defend almost everything he did in Volume 8! THAT'S how good of a character he as to when he's at his worst and wants to NUKE A CITY you can somewhat relate to him and understand where he's coming from! Fuck, Ironchad might be my favorite character, just because of how he is and the choices he makes even when the protags, villains, FNDM, and writers are against him.
The writers unintentionally made Ironcockalpha the most relatable and HUMAN character in the series! A entire analysis could be of "The Man Who Thought He Was Machine" because of him loosing emotions yet STILL trying to save everyone! EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE was against him and he didn't falter, only trying to get work done and make sure people live this war they've been thrust upon. Despite being mostly machine, Ironwood is the most human out of everyone.
I didn't even get into his fights and I won't, cause most aren't that...good, though I could get behind them. As for his death...IT WAS SO PATHETIC! He aimed his little gun and didn't even try to shoot at Cinder or Salem! At LEAST with Adam's death he tried fighting to the bitter end, but with Irondad he went out like a little bitch?! WHY?! At least have him fire a shot and accept his fate! That was so disrespectful to his character!
In the end I'm glad Ironwood's dead, cause now he can't be ruined anymore and no I won't mention his semblance, cause its never rbought up in the show outside of a con so I'm not considering it cannon, as the show doesn't as well.
R.I.P Ironwood, you truly got Adamed
Conclusion:
I ranted there, sorry about that. Anyways what I was getting at was the show "Grey/Bad" characters are treated bad and needs to be treated better. I could "forgive" Whitley and Raven but for the other I can't, they just got done so, so dirty.
Kinda makes me hope to not see Mercury again, he's either getting ruined to where they WANT you to hate him or he's getting a "redemption" though the way in character for him to join the good guys is he doesn't want to die and goes off on his own afterwards and not either "die" or "fully regret everything" cause it'd be bad. Don't do the homie like this please
Honestly that's about it, oh by the way yes the characters I mentioned are some of my favorite characters in the series, this top 10 only ending with Sun, Mercury, Pyrrha, and Roman...though Tai and Glynda are cool.
With that said thanks to those who read this, if you want to add or discuss your thoughts I'll try to answer and now I guess...have a nice day everyone!
PEACE!
