The doctor ran her hand along the egg, feeling for cracks. The soon to be parents sat together on the other side of the table.
"So is everything going okay?" She asked, pulling out her Stethoscope.
They looked at each other, both nodding. "Yes, everything is going fine," Hortense said.
"Nothing's wrong from what we can tell," Quackmore said.
The Doctor nodded, placing the Stethoscope onto the eggs shell, and listening intently for a heartbeat.
She slowly nodded, hearing a soft steady beat. "Well, the heart beat sounds very strong…" she stopped suddenly, moving the end of the Stethoscope just a bit.
"That's odd," she said
"What's odd?" Hortense asked, worried. "Is something wrong?"
"Give me a moment" she said before quickly leaving the room.
So Quackmore and Hortense were left alone, very worried about the little egg. "What do you think is wrong?" She asked.
"She says the heartbeats strong" he reassured her. "It's probably nothing"
After that they just waited in silence, simply holding each other. The Doctor returned holding a number of papers.
She immediately returned to listening, making a few notes. Once she was done she turned to them.
"Have you ever heard of two ducklings hatching from the same egg?" She asked them.
"I... uh…" Hortense was lost for words. "Uh… is that even possible?"
"It is very rare but not unheard of," she said. "I'm hearing two heartbeats"
"So… we're having twins?" Quackmore asked.
"It is a possibility," she told them. There was a silence for a moment. "Well, this isn't unheard of. It is a very high risk hatching, with most of the ducklings dying…"
"So we might lose both babies?"
"We should do an ultrasound first to make sure," she told them.
It took her a few minutes to set everything up. As the image came up she pointed to a small form.
"So there's one," she sai, pointing. "Looking good."
A few minutes past and they saw another. "And there's the other." Hortense and Quackmore looked at each other.
"So what does this mean?" Hortense asked.
"Well, both of the heart beats are strong. And they both seem happy," she reassured them. "Don't worry, I'll do everything in my power to help you."

After that, Doctors visited and Hortense and Quackmore had been very vigilant in keeping watch over their egg.
An alarm was set for every four hours to check the temperature. They checked thoroughly for cracks every morning and night.
Some might think it was a little much, but they had only just learned more about the risks of two ducklings forming in the same egg. Since the enchel appointment.
In only 20% cases did both live. There was a 30% chance one would live while the other would die, and 50% that neither would make it.
And they were already in love with their children. They had learned some time later that it would be a girl and a boy.
Even so, everything looked as good as could be. Both were healthy and they both had strong heart beat, and they moved a fair bit.
So they were confident that both would survive.

They were due in two weeks. Everything seemed to be going well. There hadn't been any major hiccups.
And the nursery was finished. It took a long time to actually decide on the color. They picked a soft blue. The one window had a brown curtain, there was a rocking chair, and two small cribs that sat side by side on one side of the room. It was a small and very cheery room. Perfect for two.
Hortense looked in on the room, the egg on her hip. (They had started taking it with them everywhere)
She sat down on the chair, rocking slowly back and forth. "Hi, everything is fine," she told them. "I'm here and everything will be alright."
She knew full well she was just trying to comfort herself more than the egg. Laying the egg had been very hard on her.
What should have only taken two hours ended up taking four and a half, and after that she'd been told to be careful when having more kids.
And then shortly after finding out how dangerous the two of them being in the same shell was. She'd also been informed that this was possibly the only egg she'd be able to have.
But she took comfort in the fact that they seemed to be well.
~ Two weeks later ~
They had been staying at the hospital for the last few days. The doctors had said it was for the best, due to how hard the hatching would be for the two.
The room they were in only had one bed, So Hortense slept on the bed while Quackmore was stuck with the small armchair.
It was six in the morning on June 9th when they saw the first crack. They watched as the little ones hammered away inside. The doctors would take away the broken shell, so they would not run out of air. They took a few breaks, but in an hour or so they were fully out.
The two were connected by an umbilical cord. They were wrapped up. The Doctor turned to the two. "Here, you can hold them well we give them the shots"
They nodded eagerly, and soon were holding the small bundles of joy.
After everything was done the doctor turned to them. "So what are their names?"
"Well, he's Donald," Hortense said holding up the baby.
"And this is Della," Quackmore said.
"Well congratulations!" She told them.
