Throughout my many years of adventuring, I had slain powerful creatures, attained power, riches, and even opened up a successful tavern that attracted many people each day. Despite all this I was bored.
When I first started adventuring, it may have been the most fun I ever had, fighting with my party, pulling foolish stunts, and almost dying only for one of my party members to cast spare the dying or even raise the dead to bring me back. I even managed to fill up my book of shadows with all the spells I could find.
I remember how and why I wanted to become an adventurer. I lived in the slums, malnourished and living off of garbage to get by. I never knew my parents, but I assume after I was born, they died. I learned from the other beggars that they found me on the streets and managed to scrounge up just enough money to buy food for me until I could fend for myself.
I was running as my life depended on it. Three men were chasing me. They caught me trying to steal from their boss, and now they had to capture me, per their boss's orders. I ran the hardest I had ever run before, but luckily with extreme grace and precision, I ended up tripping over my own two feet and fell face-first into the alleyway.
"Well, well, well, kid, looks like your short little run is over. You know the boss isn't a fan of being stolen from." The tallest of the three men said.
"Hey, can you guys just let me go? I'm just a kid. I don't know any better." I tried persuading them.
They weren't a fan of my persuasion, and I proceeded to get kicked in the face. They began to surround me and began to beat me. I could tell from how hard they were hitting that they were trying to beat me to death. I was slowly beginning to accept my fate before I heard a voice speak in my head. A deep and booming voice that echoed deeply.
"Looks like you require some aid there, kid!" Whoever this was, he seemed to be laughing at my misfortune.
"I'll tell you what kid you seem like you won't disappoint me! I'm going to lend you some of my power. All you have to do is say I accept, and I'll save your life."
I didn't have any other options. If I said no, then I'd end up as just another corpse on the street for someone to clean up.
Without a moment of hesitation, I answered, "I accept."
Immediately after, I felt something burst out of my body, and I sent all three men flying away. I ran over to check on them. They had died instantly.
I could tell that such a loud sound would attract the city guards, so I tried stealing anything of value that I could get from their bodies and ran off. I somehow ended up with a strange-looking book. I didn't remember picking it up earlier, but I began flipping through it. I had learned some common language from some other people living in the slums, so flipping through it wouldn't hurt.
When I got somewhere safe with no one else around, I sat down and let out a sigh of relief. I flipped open the book, and there were words I'd never seen before. Somehow I understood what it said. One odd thing about the pages was that there appeared to be text filling in as I was reading despite the book being empty earlier. After a little while, I realized that the text was being filled in was the person that helped me out earlier.
"Hello kid, having trouble using your new powers?"
"Yes? It's a little hard to use them." I answered out loud. I felt a little stupid talking to a book, but surprisingly the book responded to me.
"Well it's a little hard using them at first, but I'll teach you the ropes. We're going to have lots of fun together, but first things first what's your name?"
I hesitated for a little bit before I responded "My name's Aer, nice to meet you"
This is my first time writing a story so feel free to leave your reviews in the comments! Hopefully this ends up as a good story.
