The Bone-Eater's Well has been closed for three years now, permanently sealing off Kagome's path back to the Feudal Era. But she is still in control of her spiritual powers. What happens when she discovers a shinigami in plain sight in her own time?

Kagome Higurashi hurried through the crowded streets of Tokyo. Today was the day. Today she would learn her fate and see if her hard work for the past three years would pay off in her favor. She silently pleaded her case to any higher power that would listen. Please...I need this. I won't be able to carry on otherwise.
She rounded the final street corner and joined a large gathering of students. They were all huddled together, anxiously whispering or excitedly chattering with one another. The group of people was gathered around a large bulletin board positioned directly in front of the high school. It was the list of students who had been accepted into university.
Kagome sighed. She hadn't arrived early enough to avoid the large mass of students. She would have to wait in line now. Her heart beat anxiously. She was reminded of a time three years ago when she was in a similar situation. She had stood outside of her school along with Ayumi, Eri, and Yuka hoping to see her name on the board for entrance into high school. Back then, her anxiety had stemmed from all of those times she had missed school to go back through the well to the Feudal Era. But since that day when she had destroyed the Shikon Jewel and Inuyasha had saved her from her fate of eternal darkness inside the Jewel, the well hadn't worked. It didn't matter how much she had pleaded with the well, screamed at the well, shot sacred arrows down into the well...nothing would work. It was clear that the well would never again open her path back to the Feudal Era, back to her friends, back to Inuyasha. She was stuck.
After that realization came, she had spiraled into a dark depression. She would spend entire days sitting at the bottom of the well or underneath the Tree of Ages simply so that she could feel as close to Inuyasha as she could possibly get. Eventually, she admitted to herself that she would never go back and that she would never see him again. At that point, she did the one thing she could think of to block the pain. She turned to her studies. She spent every waking hour either in school or doing extra study work. She kept her mind busy so that she would never have to think about the well or the pain of losing the half demon that she loved so much and the future she had hoped that they would share together. She became a model student and top of her class.
So now, she stood in front of this board again, silently praying that she would make it into university. Not because she doubted her ability to do so at this point, but because she did not dare imagine a life with ample opportunity to let her mind wander. She needed school so that she did not have to think.
Kagome glanced around at the other students. There are so many of us. And we're all so anxious. Each for our own reasons, she noted.
Her eyes fell upon a boy about twenty yards from her. He was handsome by society's standards with golden brown locks that fell across his face. He was stylishly dressed and stood with a silent confidence. Kagome felt a twinge of pain as she realized that his arrogant demeanor reminded her slightly of Inuyasha. But there was something else about the boy. Something...odd. Something unnatural. Something that was foreign to this time.
A sudden sensation that she had not expected to feel ever again broke her thoughts. She felt the presence of a demonic aura. She glanced back at the boy and saw a creature hovering behind him. The creature hovered over the ground with his large, black, feathering wings. His bodily proportions were all wrong for someone of a human origin. His strange yellow and red eyes stood in stark contrast to the paleness of his skin. And his large mouth curved into a revolting smile that showcased his sharp teeth.
A shinigami.
Kagome stood rooted to her spot, transfixed, unable to look away from the creature. What is a shinigami doing in this era? And why is he here of all places?
As she watched, she realized that the shinigami and the boy were conversing. To anyone else, it would appear as if the boy was waiting patiently to discover the results of his exam, but Kagome could see the shinigami speaking directly to him. And after the boy was asked what was obviously supposed to be a question, he would make a small, almost imperceptible facial or head movement. He was responding.
Kagome was speechless. She had never expected to use her priestess abilities ever again. And yet, here she was, in modern day Tokyo, surrounded by regular kids, able to see a demon of death that no one else could.
What the hell is going on?
Light Yagami stood amongst the crowd of his peers. He too was waiting to find out the results of the university entrance exams. His anticipation was merely for show, however. He knew that he had been accepted. He was essentially a progeny. He'd never had to try in school at any point in his life. It was boring but necessary.
"So today's the day, huh?" asked Ryuk. He hovered around behind Light, amused by the other students' anxiety.
Light gave a curt nod in response.
"I know you've put a lot of time into studying for this entrance exam. Getting into university means a way out for you, doesn't it? No more having to worry about L's surveillance of your home."
Again, Light made a slight nod.
Ryuk's eyes grew wide with excitement. "And that means more apples for me, doesn't it?"
Light gave a tiny, one-sided smile. Ryuk laughed with excitement. Suddenly, however, he stopped.
"Light…"
Light responded by way of a shift in his eyes in Ryuk's direction.
"Light, that girl over there. She can see me."
Light narrowed his eyes. No way. No one can see you but me.
Ryuk shifted uneasily under the gaze of the priestess. He knew that he was being watched despite Light's apparent unbelief.
Light watched Ryuk for a moment more and then glanced towards the girl in question. She seemed normal enough to him. Just your average Tokyo high schooler and nothing special. She seemed vaguely familiar, but Light couldn't be sure why.
He was about to tell Ryuk that he was being paranoid when he glanced at the girl again. Her gaze had not moved in minutes now. She was indeed staring in their direction. Light narrowed his eyes. He did not like this turn of events. He took a few casual steps away from Ryuk to test the girl. His eyes widened as he realized that her gaze did not follow him but remained fixated on Ryuk.
Shit! She can see him!
He turned on his heel and walked off into the crowd, Ryuk following after.
Kagome had no idea what had just happened, but it seemed apparent that the boy could also see the shinigami and had become aware that she was able to as well. She watched as he turned and disappeared.
All of a sudden, she remembered a series of news stories that she had overheard her mother and grandfather watching on the TV recently. Stories of criminals dying strange deaths and entire units of American FBI agents being simultaneously murdered. She remembered that the police were investigating someone nicknamed "Kira" as the prime suspect.
She gasped as realization came to her. This strange boy was Kira. She had no proof and no real reason to suspect him, but somehow, she knew it to be true. Why else would he be so friendly with a shinigami in modern-day Tokyo?
As a priestess, it was her duty to stop him. She left the crowd and headed for a nearby alley. She put her yellow backpack onto the ground and pulled out her bow and a sacred arrow. She had never expected to need to use it ever again. She had merely kept it with her because by putting it away, she would be putting away the final thing that connected her to Inuyasha and his world. She had not been strong enough to part with it.
Leaving the alley, she kept to the edges of the streets, tucking her bow and arrow to her side to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to herself. Using her spiritual abilities, she followed the aura of the shinigami to a different alley only a few blocks away. As she turned into the passage, she drew her bow and aimed it straight at the boy.
