Maya was lying wide awake next to Riley. Earlier that night, she had told both her and Ava that it wasn't their fault when people leave. She has been trying to convince herself the same all night. She knew that Riley was a deep sleeper, so she didn't even bother to try to wake her up, even though there were times she could. She got out of bed and went to the living room. She looked at her phone and saw it was 3am. She sat on the couch and stared at the unlit TV in front of her.
Topanga walked into the living room. She saw a figure on the couch. She walked over and saw it was Maya.
"Maya?" She questioned the young blonde. "What are you doing up at 3am?"
"I couldn't sleep," Maya admitted.
"Thinking about your friends?" Topanga asked.
"I guess ex-friends, now," Maya said disappointedly.
Topanga sat down next to her.
"I usually wake up Cory around now to talk," Topanga told her, "but would you mind talking about this with me?"
"Might as well," Maya answered. "I know it's not my fault, and it's not Riley's. I just can't wrap my head around why this happened. I really do think Riley's right about those Seniors, but the others think we're stupid, pretty much."
"You two didn't do anything wrong," Topanga assured her.
"I know. That's why I don't understand this," Maya said. "They abandoned us. They won't even talk to us anymore. They completely ignored us today—well, I guess yesterday— …like we didn't matter to them."
"I'm sorry, Maya," Topanga comforted her. "I know this may be hard to deal with—"
"It's not just hard to deal with, Tope," Maya corrected her. "I guess with Zay, Lucas, and Smackle it is. No offense to them, but it doesn't hurt as much with them. We've been friends with Lucas for two years, and Zay and Smackle for one."
"This is about Farkle," Topanga said in a realizing tone.
"It's killing me, Topanga," Maya admitted, tears formed in her eyes. "I've been broken a lot, but this has me so close to shattering."
"Have you tried telling him that?"
"He won't talk to us," Maya reminded her. Tears started pouring down her face. "How could he abandon us?? We've been friends since we were little! Now, within two days, it's like we're nothing to him. He said he loved us both the same since he met us, is he just taking it back now? I don't want to believe that he's really just leaving us behind like that."
"Oh, Maya," Topanga comforted, sadly, as she pulled her into a hug. Maya started bawling. After a few minutes, it slowed into small sobs.
"That's what hurt the most," Maya told the older woman. "One of the most important people in my entire life. How could he do that? I know I get left, but he's my best friend. He's like a little brother type friend, ya know? I never thought, in a million years, that he'd be one to leave."
"He's going to see what he did soon," Topanga assured her. "All of them will, I'm sure of it."
"He's only seen me cry once," Maya said. "His eighth birthday. He cared so much, then. He was right by my side after I hit the pavement, right before I passed out."
"I'm sure he still cares," Topanga reassured her, "he just thinks you're making a mistake."
"Yeah, well, even if it ends up that they're right, I don't think that warrants them treating us like strangers and like we don't exist in their worlds anymore," Maya countered. "Neither of us deserve that."
"I know," Topanga agreed with the blonde. "I'm sorry that that happened to you girls. And I understand why that hurts so much more with Farkle."
"What if it really is over?" Maya questioned. "What if they never talk to us again? What if Farkle doesn't care anymore?"
"I really can't see Farkle not caring," Topanga told her, "he's Farkle. If he ever didn't care, we'd need to get him to a hospital, because there would be something seriously wrong with him."
That earned a laugh from Maya.
"I love you, Topanga," she told her.
"I love you too, Maya," Topanga answered. "You're going to be okay."
Maya laid her head on her shoulder, a tear slowly falling from her eye.
