Andy's First Date
Chapter 1: The Date Part 1
Hillwood
2030
It was a beautiful Spring evening in the town known as Hillwood.
The sky is clear, the weather is nice and warm and many people were going out on the town. It's Saturday and people are either going out by themselves or with a certain special companion for the evening.
Especially a certain football headed young man who lived in this town.
No, not THAT Football headed young man.
No, actually, it's his son.
Andrew Phillip Shortman, known by his loved ones as "Andy", who is now 14 years old and on his way for his very first date.
Yes, his first date and with a very special young lady whom had a special place in his heart.
Andy has grown up a lot, he is now in high school, one of the tallest kids in his class and also the star and captain of his school's karate team, as well as still being on the honor roll. He is also just as fun loving, spunky and well-meaning as he ever was as a kid.
He really has grown up a bit and unlike most times, instead of wearing his red jacket and jeans, he is now dressed up a bit. He is wearing a black jacket, a white dress shirt underneath, a red tie and black pants and shoes. This is because he is now going to go on his first date.
"Oh man..."Andy said as he tugged his collar a bit and made sure the bouquet of flowers he that he got from the Old Vitello's flower shop were okay.
Tonight was an important evening and he wanted everything to go smoothly. He was taking Kiara out for their first date tonight.
Yes, Kiara Johanssen...the girl whom he has known for his whole life, his best friend...and the girl he has had feelings for since he was 12 years old.
A while back he finally had the courage to confessed to her his feelings for her and to his surprise, she reciprocated and now he's taking her out on their first date together.
Needless to say, he's a little nervous.
This is his first date and crush or not, Kiara is his best friend and he wanted everything to go perfect.
"Everything has to be perfect!..."Andy whispered nervously he thought back to this week.
Ever since he asked Kiara out a few days ago, his parents (especially his mother) had both expressed their approval and playful ribbing, saying that they always knew that this would happen and that they'd make a cute couple, which was totally annoying, embarrassing and it didn't really lessen his nervousness. His little brother and sister wouldn't stop with their teasing and their friends pretty much acted like they expected this.
Andy didn't get it.
Sure, he has had a crush on Kiara since he was 12...maybe even before then but was he that obvious?
He didn't know. All he did know is that it didn't help his nervousness at all!
He just hoped that he didn't end up ruining things and making Kiara second guess this whole thing.
"Kiara..."Andy thought as he glanced at his watched and saw that it was that it was 5:45 and the date was at six.
"I'd better get a move on..."He muttered as he kept heading to the Johanssen residence, thinking about the beautiful and smart girl who's waiting for him.
Meanwhile
A few blocks away, a young lady was preparing for a special evening.
It's Kiara Johanssen, who is getting ready for her first date with Andy Shortman.
Like Andy, Kiara has changed much over the years thanks to puberty. She still wears her long, dark, curly hair and she still has her glasses. She is rather petite, one of the shortest girls in her class and has blossomed into a lovely young lady.
A young lady who is also nervous as she tried to get ready.
"Mother, can you help me?..."Kiara asked for her to come in.
"Coming, Kiara..."Was heard as her mother, Phoebe Heyerdahl-Johanssen, a woman in her early 40's, entered the room.
"What is it, Kiara-chan?..."Phoebe answered and Kiara sighed
"What? Andy will be here soon and I can't let him see me like this..."Kiara complained as she pointed to her hair that she was having trouble styling.
Phoebe heard this and shook her head in amusement before sending her daughter an understanding smile.
Andy is the son of their family friends Arnold and Helga and he is also Kiara's best friend. She also knew that her daughter has been in love with him for years and that this date is important to her.
Phoebe is very happy for her daughter, Andy is a nice boy and they are perfect for each other. Sure, her husband Gerald is still a little anxious about the whole thing but it's only because he can be overprotective about their daughters.
She even remembered the first time their children met as babies and when they all joked about the two of them falling in love and getting married as adults, he said that she is not ready. She loves her husband greatly but he can be a bit silly.
Anyway, Phoebe decided to assist her eldest daughter.
"Let me help you..."She said as she began to fix her daughter's hair.
It kind of reminded her of when she helped Helga get ready for her first date with Arnold after San Lorenzo, back when they were children, helping her with her hair, makeup and telling her that she and Arnold will be fine when she got nervous.
Such fond memories...
Now, she is helping her daughter get ready for her first date tonight.
She still couldn't believe that her baby girl is going out on a date and with the boy she has always loved.
"Oh, Kiara. I am so happy for you..."She thought as she brushed her daughter's hair.
Once she was done, the older woman smiled.
"There, perfect..."Phoebe said as she showed her daughter a mirror.
Kiara looked at her reflection and smiled, seeing that her hair is now neat
"Thank you, Mother..."She said, as she examined himself once more.
She wanted everything to go smoothly and also wanted to look nice tonight. She really wanted things to be perfect. Her mother, on the other hand, saw how she looked and now had a teary smile on her face as she looked at her daughter.
It feels like just yesterday, she was a little girl and now she is going out on her first date!
"Oh Kiara, you look so beautiful and all grown up..."Phoebe said in a motherly sort of way and hugged her daughter.
"Mother!..."Kiara complained with a blush evident on her face.
"Oh, I am just so happy for you. This is your very first date!..."Phoebe said once she let go of her and Kiara groaned.
"Mother, please stop..."She said, still embarrassed.
She could still remember everything that happened after they found out that Andy asked her out a few days ago. Predictably, her dad went nuts while her mother looked like she didn't know whether to happily scream in joy or burst into tears. Not to mention, Kiara also had to deal with her little sisters' teasing and and their friends being totally annoying and acting like they expected this.
It's totally annoying. However, her mother continued speaking.
"So...where is Andy taking you, Kiara?..."Phoebe asked.
"Andy mentioned something about dinner and a movie. Maybe a walk in the park or something..."Kiara said as she thought about it.
"How romantic..."Phoebe gushed to her daughter before hugging her again.
"Mother, please. I have to get ready..."Kiara said as she continued to apply blush.
Unknown to her mother, Kiara felt very nervous and uneasy.
Tonight is very important and she wanted everything to go perfect.
"Everything has to be perfect!..."The dark haired girl thought, worried.
Phoebe noticed her daughters expression and spoke up.
"Kiara, what's wrong?..."Phoebe asked her daughter.
Kiara was silent for a moment before responding.
"I...I..."Kiara began nervously... "Do you think I look okay? That Andy will...think I look nice like this?..."She asked in an insecure tone.
Her mother heard this and sent her daughter an understanding, motherly look.
"Kiara Satomi Johanssen, you are very beautiful and Andy will love the way you look. You will be fine..."Phoebe said in a sincere way to her daughter.
Kiara heard this and sighed.
"I...I just want everything to go perfectly..."She admitted.
She has had feelings for a long time, since the third grade and now she and him are going to go out on their first date.
Everything is about to change and she hoped that she didn't end up ruining things and making Andy second guess this whole thing.
"Kiara-chan, please calm down. You are beautiful and I am sure that everything will work out with Andy..."Phoebe said to her daughter, who sent her a small smile at that.
"I hope so..."Kiara thought as she continued getting ready.
"Kiara and Andy, sitting in a tree...K-I-S-S-I-N-G!~..."Another voice was heard.
Kiara frowned when she saw that it was her 10 year old sister, Akiko "Kiki" Johanssen, who was at her door and had a mischevous grin on her face.
"Get out of my room!..."Kiara yelled at her, while her sister began teasing again.
"Looks like Megan was right, you really did get bitten by the love bug. It's all over your face!..."Kiki teased and Kiara got mad at that.
"Kiki, I said get out!..."Kiara yelled at her.
"Kiara! Akiko! Stop this fighting now!..."Phoebe yelled in a surprisingly loud voice, causing both of her daughters to flinch.
"Sorry, Mother..."Both girls said.
"Good...now Akiko, apologize to your sister and leave this room so Kiara can get ready..."Phoebe ordered and her younger daughter looked like she didn't want to but the strict look on her mother's face and she found herself facing her older sister.
"Sorry, Kiara..."Kiki apologized to Kiara, while their mother looked pleased.
Once that was done, Phoebe decided to speak again.
"Akiko, let us give you sister some time to herself..."Phoebe said and her youngest daughter before they left Kiara's room.
Once they were out in the hall, Phoebe told Kiki to go wash up for dinner and the young girl obeyed her.
She then noticed her husband in the living room, looking spaced out as he sat in his favorite chair.
"Gerald, Dear?... Gerald!..."Phoebe said, snapping her husband out of his thoughts.
"Huh? Oh...yeah, Babe..."Gerald said but Phoebe raised a brow at that.
"Are you alright?..."She asked.
"I'm fine, Babe..."Gerald waved it off, before sending her a curious look. "So...how is Kiara?..."He asked and Phoebe sent him a serious look.
"She is still getting ready. Now Gerald, when Andy gets here, I want to promise me that you will not act all be overbearing and end up embarrassing her..."Phoebe said sternly to him.
"Me? Embarrassing?!..."Gerald said in an appalled tone while Phoebe rolled her eyes. "Name one time I have ever embarrassed our daughter?..."He demanded.
"How about the time that time you freaked out when she went to the love tunnel at the cheese festival when she was 10? Or the time that you made a show when you cheered louder than anyone at her recital? Or the time we all went to the beach and you insisted that she and Kiki had to stay in the shallow waters and to top it all of you kept giving the evil eye to any boys that showed any interest in them?..."Phoebe reminded and Gerald crossed his arms.
"Well...I love my baby girls, so sue me!..."Gerald said defensively.
"Gerald, you were being overprotective to the point of paranoia..."Phoebe accused and Gerald frowned. "PROMISE me you won't do something that will bother her and Andy, Kiara is really looking forward to this..."She pointed out and her husband sighed.
"I just want to protect my baby girls..."Gerald said.
"Gerald, Kiara will be fine. And remember, Andy is Arnold and Helga's son and he is our godson. We have known him since he was born..."Phoebe pointed out.
Gerald heard this and sighed.
"I know but..I'm worried..."He said and his wife put a hand on his shoulder. "I mean, she is already 14 and going on her first date..."Gerald said.
"Dear, you and I started dating before we were even in the sixth grade, remember?..."Phoebe pointed out.
"I know but..."Gerald started but paused as he saw that she had a point.
He groaned as his wife still sent him an sympathetic look.
"Kiara will be fine. Andy is a nice boy and our daughter is a smart girl..."Phoebe said in her usual way while their daughter was still getting ready for her date.
Later
At 5:58 PM
Andy soon arrived to the Johanssen residence. He was still nervous and was preparing himself for his date.
As he walked to the front door, he was practicing what he is going to say to Kiara. He really wanted impress her and make sure tonight goes well.
"Hello, Miss Johanssen. You look lovely this evening. Shall we be off?..."Andy began but shook his head. "Nah, I sound like one of those snobby Smyth-Higgins..."He muttered, trying to think of another way to greet her.
"Hey Kiara, we're going to be late for our reservations! Now let's go!..."Andy tried but made a face at that and shook his head. "No, she'd kill me if I say that to her..."He muttered.
He glanced at his watch and saw that it was now six. The oblong haired boy sighed and knew that it's time.
"Well, here goes nothing..."He thought as he rang the doorbell.
He waited a moment before it opened. It was his aunt Phoebe and Uncle Gerald.
"Good evening, Andy..."Phoebe said politely to her godson.
"Hi, aunt Phoebe..."Andy said to his godmother.
"Hello, Andy.."Gerald said, trying to show a friendly smile but on the inside, he is a wreck.
"Hi there, Uncle Gerald. How are you?..."Andy asked as his godfather had a forced smile.
"Good..."He said, still with that forced smile "Uh, how are you folks and brother and sister?..."Gerald quickly asked.
"Mom and dad are fine, Megan and her dance team are looking forward to the dancing competition next week and Henry is excited about the upcoming field trip to the aquarium..."Andy said as he thought about his family.
"I see...well, come on in..."Gerald said as they lead him to the living room since Kiara is still getting ready.
"Kiara, Andy's here..."Phoebe called to her daughter.
"I will be done in a second!..."Kiara's voice could be heard from upstairs.
"So, Andy... we were excited about you and Kia-chan..."Phoebe said happily.
"You were?..."Andy said in an awkward tone as he noticed his godfather sending him a really weird look.
"Uncle Gerald?..."Andy thought as he godfather spoke up next.
"I think it's time to have a...heart-to-heart talk, Andrew..."Gerald said in a surprisingly strict tone.
"It is?..."Andy said, confused.
He and his godfather are usually very close and they get along great but now, he's acting really strange.
"I want Kiara to be happy and I also want to make sure she is safe..."Gerald said in a stern voice "So, if you upset her, you and I will have a little talk! ..."Gerald said sternly and Andy sweated a bit.
"Um...okay, Uncle Gerald..."Andy stammered, while Gerald kept that look on his face.
It's a bluff. Gerald liked Andy and he knew that he is a good kid but he had to make sure that his baby girl will be alright.
"Dad, you're scaring him!..."Kiara's voice was heard as she walked into the living room, annoyed with him.
Andy gasped when he saw Kiara's appearance.
She had her hair down with hair clips and she is also was wearing a purple dress and matching high heels. She is also not wearing her glasses, using contacts instead. Andy only stared as she sent him a shy look.
"Hi Andy..."Kiara said while Andy was stunned silent.
"Wow..."He thought stunned, as he looked at her.
Kiara looked so beautiful right now. She was always cute as a kid but right now, she's amazing.
Gerald noticed his staring and ribbed him, snapping him out of it.
"Uh...Hi, Kiara..."Andy said awkwardly as he went to her. "You look great..."He said before he recalled the flowers in his hands. "There are for you..."Andy said as he
"Thank you...these are beautiful..."Kiara said happily as she took the flowers.
The two smiled at each other but Kiara's parents were still here and it made things awkward. Especially when they started talking again.
"These are beautiful flowers. I'll just go put them in a vase..."Phoebe said as she went to get one.
"I trust that you will be home at a proper hour?..." Gerald said to his daughter in away that was much like an order.
His daughter sighed.
"Yes father, I won't be late..." Kiaea said as she grabbed her purse.
"Don't worry...I'll have her back by curfew, Uncle Gerald..."Andy said to his godfather.
"You'd better. Remember what I just said!..."Gerald said and his daughter groaned.
"Oh, Dad..."Kiara thought as she almost died of embarrassment at her dad's antics.
Once Phoebe came back with a vase, it was time to go.
"Bye!..."Kiara said as she dragged Andy outside, desperate to get away before her parents or sister did anything to embarrass her even more.
"Bye!..."Andy managed to say before Kiara dragged him outside.
Once they were gone, Gerald noticed his wife's look.
"What?..."Gerald questioned and Phoebe sighed
"Oh, Gerald..."She said as she shook her head before going to the kitchen.
She hoped her daughter and Andy would have a nice time tonight and that nothing crazy would happen.
Unknown to her, Kiki and Gerald both watched Kiara and Andy leave and this is what they thought.
"I better let Megan know that they left..."Kiki thought mischievously and went to make a phone call.
"Kiara...oh, my baby girl...why ...why does she have to grow up so fast?..."Gerald thought in dread and feeling like an overprotective father who was feeling like he was losing his daughter.
Oh Boy...
