"Jerk!" Mai yelled when she shut the door to her apartment. Her cellphone rang. She glared at the screen when the caller ID was shown. Instead of answering, she slammed her phone down on the coffee table and headed to the bathroom to shower and cool off. "Jerk! Calling me an idiot. Always looking like some sort of emotionless robot." After her shower, she went in the closet and pulled her PJ shorts and an oversized blue long sleeve shirt (Naru's long sleeve shirt). "Stupid jerk who thinks he can do whatever he pleases!" Her cell phone rang again and she was fuming. Mai humphed at her phone, put it on silent, and turned her attention to her TV for the rest of the day and night.
The apartment door was slammed shut and Lin can feel the tension from his charge. Oliver marched to the stove and turned it on to heat up the kettle of water.
"Did something happen between you and Taniyama-san again?" Lin asked curiously. Oliver's body tensed yet he stayed quiet. "I heard from Matsuzaki-san that Taniyama-san has a date today."
"You gossip now?" Oliver asked irritably.
"When it concerns you and Taniyama-san," Lin simply answered. "Dinner is ready if you want some." Oliver nodded and set up a plateful of food for himself. Lin watched Oliver. He can tell that he was having some sort of mental battle with himself. He raised an eyebrow. "You interfered with her date." The glare that Lin received did not put any effect on him. Instead, Lin glared back at Oliver. "Apologize to Taniyama-san."
"She's an idiot to date an idiot who has no drive in his life." Lin scoffed.
"You're a jealous idiot who broke up with her because -"
"I, for one, am not an idiot."
"When it involves with your feelings and emotions you most definitely are. You can be irrational, hence why you ended things with her." Oliver sighed. The two sat down at the kitchen bar. Oliver picked at his food, deep in thought.
"I kept Mai in the office longer so she wouldn't go on the date. Instead, her date came and I might've threatened him." Lin noticed the slight blush on Oliver's cheeks. He smirked. Oliver cleared his throat. "She should thank me anyway. The man is incompetent and Mai wouldn't like him in the long run." Lin sighed and decided to let it go. He was too tired to deal with any longer for today.
It was Mai's day off. Masako had called her late in the morning and asked to have lunch together. Mai happily agreed and headed towards their favorite café. She found Masako sitting by the window.
"I ordered our drinks," Masako said as Mai sat down. Mai happily thanked her and asked about her show since Masako was away for a couple of months in the states. "The spirit was very easy to convince to move on when I was in Vegas. How about you? How are you and Naru?" Mai sighed and broke the news to her which caused the medium to gasp.
"Don't worry Masako. You've been away for a while and it's hard to get in contact with you," Mai said assuring. "But he's an idiot. So, so stupid. Just because our case last month ended up becoming dangerous and he almost used his PK over a malicious spirit since it was after me."
"You two argued again?" Masako asked, even though she knew the answer. Mai nodded. "And…?"
"He ended it. Just said that we're done here and walked away." Mai frowned and looked at the table sadly. "And I let him walk away." Once their drinks arrived, the two girls ordered their meal. While waiting for their food, Mai recited the story of Naru interfering with her date plan. In the end, Masako laughed.
"He wants you back Mai no matter what he says or what he does," Masako said. "Was the break up recent?"
"Almost a month ago. Poor Lin had to deal with us with our horrid first week."
"Really?" Mai nodded.
"We were silent. Naru didn't even ask me for tea for a whole week and a half until I just served it to him. He looked like a zombie without his tea." The girls giggled. Masako sighed at Mai.
"You two are idiots." Mai pouted as she blushed. "He's an even bigger idiot for being stubborn with his feelings but you should've went after him and argued the crap out of him like you usually do." Mai knew Masako was right. Why didn't she stop him?
"Okay I'll talk to him, however, Naru needs to confront me first." Masako sighed yet again. 'Two stubborn idiots fighting over nothing. So stupid,' Masako thought.
"You should go out," Lin told Oliver who was in the living room reading his book. Oliver's eyes didn't leave his book as he shook his head. Lin sighed. "Fresh air will do you good." He raised an eyebrow.
"Madoka's coming over," he said. Lin nodded which got Oliver to stand up and close his book.
"Let me know when I can return," he said as he grabbed his wallet and keys.
The weather was sunny and warm. Oliver put his hands in his pants pocket and breathed in the fresh air. He walked endlessly in the city. He stopped at a small shop that sells coffee and tea. So, of course, he ordered himself a cup of tea. He sighed. It was a shop that he and Mai often go to. He held his cup and felt a pang in his chest. He wanted to throw it away. He started to walk again and pulled his phone out. He paused and stared at the unchanged wallpaper of Mai. 'I'm pathetic,' he thought. "I really am an emotional idiot." He dialed her number and headed to the direction to her apartment. He quietly growled as her phone went straight to voicemail.
"Idiot," he said as he put his phone inside his pocket.
It only took him about fifteen minutes to reach her apartment by bus. Oliver went up the second story, turned left, and knocked on the fourth door. No answer. He bent down to the doormat and pulled the left corner and picked up her spare key. Once the door was unlocked, he placed the key back to its rightful place and went inside.
It was very quiet so he knew for sure that Mai wasn't home. He found her dead cell phone and plugged it in a charger inside her bedroom. To kill time, Oliver tidied up her home: washed the dishes, organized her books and papers, and made tea. Once the tea was done, Oliver sat on the couch and channel surfed.
Two hours passed. Oliver was concerned. 'Why is she out for so long?' he thought. Just as he was about to head out, he heard the door open.
"Weird, I thought I locked it." Oliver froze for a second and felt his heart skip a beat. He carefully watched Mai take her shoes off. When she looked up, Mai screamed and jumped back against the door. "Oh my…oh good. It—It's just you." She quickly scowled at her ex-boyfriend as he watched her with amused eyes. "Jerk! What are you even doing here? You should've at least warned me."
"I did. Your phone was here and dead," Oliver said. Mai was calm and she blushed with embarrassment. It was silent between them. Oliver sat back down on the couch and watched Mai put a container of food inside her fridge. "Did you go on another date?" Mai shook her head.
"Masako," she answered and noticed how her apartment was cleaner. "Thank you. You didn't have to clean up." Naru smirked.
"I had to do something while I wait for you." Amusement filled his eyes as her face blushed again. Oliver sighed. "Actually, there's a reason why I'm here." Mai crossed her arms.
"I figured. You always have a reason for something." Mai gave him a soft smile and took a seat beside him. "So?" Oliver cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry," he said. Mai stayed silent, hoping and waiting for him to continue. "You're very open with your feelings and I'm stubborn about it. For that, I'm sorry. It made me break up our relationship and I highly regret it."
"I'm sorry too. I should've stopped you. I should've reasoned with you more." Oliver moved closer to her. He held her hand that rested on her lap. Mai looked up at him surprised. "Naru?"
"I promise to not be stubborn with my feelings and promise me that you'll stick with me."
"I never really left," Mai said with a smile. "I promise though. I really missed you. And thanks for ruining that date. He was such a suck up." Oliver smirked and kissed her forehead.
"I wasn't letting anyone go out with you anyway."
