Chapter 1 New Beginnings

I felt the sun hit my face as I woke up trying to hide from it. Every morning I could hear the sound of cars racing around the city to go to their jobs and the sound of people talking. I got up next to my polar bear dog, Naga and started petting her. Naga had been my only friend since I had left the south pole, back when I was six years old I lived in the south pole with my parents but after the north and south war started my parents were killed and I was lucky enough to escape the south and move to the only safe lands in the world Republic City. Republic City was the city of peace where there was no war, as far as we knew we were just sitting back while the north and south had war and the fire nation was going to war with the earth kingdoms. The fire nation was a very war hungry state as far as they knew the more war the more money they got selling their tools and it was the same with every nation, Republic City was getting a knock out of it from the rich inventor Hiroshi Sato, he made airplanes, tanks, mech suits, everything that they could sell from the wars. Varrick was another inventor who did the same; he only worked for the south and the north. This world would soon go down in ruins from the government.

It was the world we lived in and there was no way out of it. There were dirt poor people who used to be wealthy but from just one attack from the invaders and you could lose everything. That was exactly what happened to me, I used to be a princess of the south my dad Tonraq, was the chief., but one night some new inventions from Varrick bombed my house and I was evacuated, now I'm dirt poor living in an alley with naga. Everyone thought I was dead and to be honest if I would have stayed I would have to live with being the chief so this was probably for the best.

I got up to pick up my duffel bag, it only had a water bottle and clothes from my job. I worked at a coal mine, it was probably the most dangerous job to get but it was all I had. There were so many people that lived in the houses of Republic City that there simply wasn't enough, the prices for them were so big that you were considered rich to even have one, and for the rest of us you most lily lived in a orphanage or if you're to old for that then good luck and try to find a rich husband or wife. I didn't want to be married to someone I didn't love so I stayed quiet most of the time when someone rich would come along.

I was walking up to the gas station where people would go to change in the bathrooms for work. I walked inside and there was Kya on the counter.

"Hey Korra getting ready for the mines." she said giving me the key to restroom

"Yes, I was wondering if you had any energy drinks."

"Ah, yes there's monster, red bull, and zip fizz."

I needed something that could give me lots of energy. "Uh, red bull."

"Okay whatever you say." she handed it over to me.

"That'll be ten dollars."

"Everything's so expensive." I said giving her ten dollar bill

"Well you know, money's money."

"I'll see you later Kya."

"Be careful."

"You too."

I got into my work clothes and headed off running to the bus not to be late. The bus was filled with people going to the mines. Almost everybody had the job of working in the mines, probably because it was the only job that people gave away without any background check. I grabbed my headphones and turned on my music 'Fortunate Son by Creedence ClearWater Revival'. I got out of the bus and walked to the mines where thousands of people were in. I grabbed my helmet, put it on and grabbed my pickax. I turned to my left where a man fell from a landslide.

'This was going to be a long day.'

-Break-

It was break and everyone was huddled up eating their lunch which was most likely an apple or gum. I was eating an apple when I saw someone familiar in the crowd and when he turned around he came and gave me a hug.

"Bolin I've missed you, how's the leg." The last time I had seen Bolin in the mines his leg was crushed by a sudden landslide of rocks and his brother that was next to him was injured when his arm was crushed by the landslide too.

"Well better my leg was broken but after a little bit of healing it's all better and Mako's hand is too, we were lucky it wasn't that big of a landslide."

The bell rang 'back to work.'"Well I'll see ya Bolin I think it's time to go."

"Okay till next time Korra."

-Later-

I got my pay and started walking home. By the time work ended the buses were closed and everyone had to go 'home' by foot. I was walking when all of the sudden I tripped. I tried to get up but my foot was stuck in a huge hole.

"Dang it not right now." I looked around and nobody was around by midnight. The streets I lived near were silent. I looked back at my foot where it was stuck then around me I wouldn't be able to get out without help.

"I hope she's close enough." I put my fingers in my mouth and whistled as loud as I could and in minutes Naga made it up to me.

"Good girl now help me out of here I'm stuck." Naga dug as far as she could near my foot until I was free.

"Yes, thank you Naga." I got up ready to leave when I heard something behind me. I turned around to see a carpet like thing with tentacles on it with red like designs on it.

I stood my ground"Wh-What are you?" It swerved around me.

"I haven't spoken to a human in thousands of years, I am a spirit."

"Wait I've heard of spirits I just didn't think they existed I thought they were nothing else then fairy tales." the spirit got closer to me.

"You amuse me, this world is rotten, a mess Ravva tried to save this world, but failed and I want to know why."

"Who's Ravva."

"Ravva is the light spirit or how you may know, the spirit that lives within the avatar giving him or her such powers."

"The avatar, I thought he vanished from the world."

"Hmmmm tell me more of what you know."

I cleared my throat "The avatar was our protector but left when we needed him the most no one knows where he is, his name was Roku. Some people say that he died, but know one really knows."

"This is very different of Ravva, you said that Ravva left when the world needed him the most, what's happening right now that the avatar is needed so much?"

"The four nations, there out of balance the south is at war with the north and the fire nation is at war with the earth kingdom."

He circled me again"I've been watching you, I know you have potential. I'm not much of a let's save the world cleshay spirit, but the world needs help, will you join me together we can help each other balance the world and find the avatar once again."

"I-yes, my parents died from this war I'm not going to let anyone have to go through any of this like me."

"Can you bend?"

"No."

"It's fine I have a solution to hold on to me." I grabbed onto one of his? Tentacles and closing my eyes feeling sudden movement under me.

"Open your eyes." I did and I was met with a beautiful horizon, the sky was beautiful with different colors mixing with others and little beautiful creatures flying and moving around.

"What is this place?"

"The spirit world, no person has stepped on it for years you're one of the few people that have."

"This is amazing"

"To fuse with me and make us become one like the avatar we must go inside of the tree of time, follow me."

"Wait, become one and fuse?"

"It's fine just follow me."

"You're lucky I have nothing better to do." I followed him inside of a huge tree.

"Okay now what."

"Meditate, meditate on the spiritual energy, close your eyes, do you feel it water, earth, fire, air all of these elements are in you without you knowing it with one breath you take in air, and water half of your body is filled with it. Now earth and fire are harder elements but in fire there is life and with two sticks you can make fire without bending and earth you can use it to make things like medals and even platinum."

"I understand" the tree started to glow with the creatures surrounding it. I could feel the spiritual energy, everything is connected. Then Vatuu moved up into the air and with one movement he went through me. I could feel energy like anything before burst through me all at once. Then there was a blast of light.

I got out of the tree and walked to the water and in my reflection my short hair moved with the air showing my red eyes. Then I heard Vatuu's voice in my head.

'Now We Are One'
