Baby Prompt
Operation: Parenthood
"And that's about when you passed out, Jauney-boy!" Nora stated with a wide grin and a giggle as she continued to kick her feet off the side of the blonde's hospital bed.
"This cannot be happening." Jaune spoke with an incredulous tone as he listened to the girl recant the story. "No, seriously, this didn't actually happen, right?!"
Nora's giggle turned into a full-blown belly laugh as she began to writhe on the floor. Ren merely whistled to himself in the doorway to the room while trying his best to not make eye contact with the pleading b—man. It was all the proof Jaune needed as he cradled his head in his hands and covered his face in embarrassment. Why did he even ask?
Sure, Jaune had humiliated himself multiple times in his short life, hell it was becoming more of a character trait than a flaw, but this time really took the cake. It's not often that special moments come along for couples like Ruby and himself that define their relationship and today was definitely one of them. Or rather-
"I can't believe I passed out as she gave birth."
It was supposed to be.
Ren stifled a quiet laugh himself as Jaune glared in his direction. He noticed the blue eyes and pretended to cough into his hand before speaking.
"Hey man," He tried. "it can definitely be a startling thing, so I can completely understand it happening."
"You really mean that?"
"No." Nora commented, earning herself a slap to the head from an already distraught Jaune. One she merely shrugged off and continued laughing on the ground.
Jaune sighed to himself as he fell back onto his pillow and gazed at the ceiling. How am I supposed to face her or anyone after that?
Ren strolled over to the bed, stepping over Nora on his way. He sat on the edge as Jaune peered over at him with a look of despair written all over his face. Ren didn't need to use his semblance to guess any of the emotions brewing inside his team leader. Right now, more than ever, he needed support and he definitely wasn't getting it from the third person in the room.
"Look," Ren attempted once more. "She is your wife, and she is the mother of your newborn son. If anyone is on your side more than us," Ren gave a look and sigh of disapproval as Nora still not finished her laughing fit. "Especially her, it is Ruby. Now stop sulking and go see both of them. You've got a child to father."
Jaune realized the truth in his friend's words. Here he was lying in a hospital room by himself and whining about something already done when he should be in the other room taking care of his wife and child. Well no more!
Jaune sat up in bed and moved to stand. He made sure he felt steady before rising and slipping on the pair of hospital slippers at his bedside. "You're right, Ren." He commented as he walked towards the doorway, possibly kicking the redhead on the floor slightly. He turned back once more, staring back at the smiling ninja who remained seated. "Thank you."
With that, Jaune marched down the hallway and what he had hoped was in the direction of Ruby's room. It was never fun passing out and winding up in another wing of the hospital. To say it was awkward to ask staff how to find the maternity wing after such an incident was an understatement.
After a few less than helpful personnel were unable to answer, already hearing the cause of Jaune's predicament, he did eventually make it back to her room. He stood outside for a moment, contemplating what he should say or do when he entered.
Here goes nothing.
With a single, gentle knock on the door, he entered the room. As he moved, he could already see Yang on the far side of the room near the window. He blinked at her as she gave him a playful smirk. Oh Oum, what are you planning? Regardless, he didn't have time to interrogate his fellow blonde and walked steadily into the room. As he moved passed the bathroom, he turned the corner to see a sight of pure bliss.
There, in the bed, was a disheveled and obviously exhausted Ruby, hair a mess, holding their son as he lay there in his mother's arms wrapped in a blue blanket. Jaune had no words for it. It was as if his existence was validated. The woman of his dreams, the goofy and awkward blonde Jaune Arc, was holding their child.
Ruby noticed the pair of blue eyes looking over at her and the baby and motioned for him to come closer. He gulped once and moved towards the seat next to the bed, ignoring Yang as she continued to smirk devilishly at him. Once he reached Ruby's side, he quietly took a seat beside her, noticing the newborn was asleep.
"You're just in time." Ruby whispered. "He finally fell asleep after a feeding."
"Yeah…" Was all he could manage as he stared at the baby, not taking his eyes off him for a second. He had blonde hair, just like his father. He also had a pair of adorable big cheeks that Jaune had to resist the urge to grab; something he had inherited from Saph doing it to him most likely.
"He has silver eyes, in case you were wondering." Ruby whispered once more.
Jaune smiled warmly at the comment. The baby was a combination of both her and him. If that wasn't proof of their love, what could be?
"Do you want to hold him?"
Jaune's head turned away from the baby at Ruby's comment, looking at her with what she could only make out to be that of desire. He appeared nervous, as any new father would be, but in a way that said "I need this".
"My arms are pretty tired after holding him for a while."
That was all that Jaune needed as he stood and leaned towards Ruby. She offered him the sweet bundle which he accepted gracefully, making sure to coddle him close to his chest while supporting the head. He sat down gently once more staring down at his son. It was as if nothing mattered in the world. Nothing but this. These three people sitting together. A family.
Ruby relaxed in bed as she took the sight of it all in. For most of her years she thought her only love would be desserts, but then she found love in the form of an awkward teen boy she met at Beacon, and now, they had a son. She was a wife and a mother, and that was sweeter than any bakery treat.
She noticed as a single streak of tears graced Jaune's face as he continued his gaze at their son. Before he could ask her, she moved towards him and gently wiped it with her finger, catching his attention. The two made eye contact and as if they knew what the other wanted, leaned in for a soft, but silent kiss as to not disturb the newest member of the Rose-Arc family.
"Thank you for making me a father and I love you." Jaune spoke.
"Thank you for making me a mother, and I love you too, dork." She replied.
The two leaned on the edge of the bed together, snuggling as best they could. They knew the hard times would be coming soon, but for now, it was perfect the way it was.
Unbeknownst to the three of them, Yang had made her way to the entrance of the room, out of sight, meeting up with Ren and Nora who had finally returned after the redhead had finally gained some composure. Yang greeted them with a grin that both noticed immediately. "Best leave them be for now." She spoke.
"What are you smiling about?" Nora asked.
Yang raised her scroll and shook it a few times in front of them to lure their attention. "I got Vomit boy's nap recorded on here."
Ren face palmed as Nora shrieked in excitement at the girl's announcement. "No way! You have to send that to me!"
"Of course!"
"You two are hopeless..." Ren spoke into his hand before looking at them both. "but I need a copy too!"
