"Edelgard Eisner..." the emperor sighs, her toes wiggling as she holds the ring up to the moonlight.

"Byleth von Hresvelg," her betrothed corrects with a lacing of their fingers, his foot idly brushing against hers. "A consort has no right to force his lord to take his name."

The crushing heartbreak that dawns upon her welling face is as swift, palpable, and peculiar as the stubborn determination that washes over it.

"T... T-then I will abdicate the throne!" she declares while clenching his big toe and tightening her hand. "The title of emperor is nothing compared to your name!"

Byleth throws his free leg over hers and smiles. "You know you can't do that."

The petite emperor practically pins him to the bed in return, her undone hair cascading over him like a silver veil. "Can't I? If you were to take the throne, as well as my hand, then surely that would make us...!"

Byleth lifts his head to silence her, compelled by little more than the beauty before him.

"Cute," he laughs when they eventually part for air. "You've been thinking about this for a while, haven't you, Lady Eisner?"

The reddening of her ears as she buries herself into his neck serve as all the proof he needs.
