A/N: Y'all… It's finally here! ;_; The wedding of the year! Lol! At least for me, anyway… I've told some of my friends that writing Amber's wedding took a lot out of me, and writing Sofia's took even more. But…I'm so glad it's here at last. This is probably the sweetest and happiest story I've written in a while (especially when you consider the drama of seasons 2 and 3…and later on in this season). But it's all been worth it. Nothing compares to finally seeing all those hints and the organic transition from friends to loves pay off. So, this is for everyone who's been waiting to see this… I hope you enjoy this!
A/N 2: Happy birthday to my dear friend, Creepy-Pasta! Love ya, girl! Hope you like this unplanned birthday present! Haha!
*Story*
When Cedric had proposed to Sofia during New Year, he knew what would follow: planning, preparing, securing outfits for the event, gathering people to be in the wedding, locating the perfect spot for the wedding… It was so much.
"You could just elope," Wormwood had mentioned to his friend on more than one occasion, and honestly, the sorcerer had seriously considered it. But…
He knew how important it was for Sofia to be around friends and family, especially on such a big day. He wouldn't take that from her. It was a dream of many to have loved ones near when a wedding was concerned, and as much as he might have tried to deny it, it was important to have his family near during this time too. His parents, his sister, his niece and her boyfriend… Perhaps his family wasn't as extensive as some, but they meant everything to him, so he knew precisely how Sofia likely felt.
Therefore, as previously mentioned, he'd agreed to a wedding, now on two conditions: one, Merlin would officiate, and two, it would take place somewhere meaningful to both of them. Sofia had readily agreed and suggested Reimagia, where she'd become a sorceress and they'd spent a great deal of time together before her seventeenth birthday: living together, growing ever closer… Cedric couldn't have recommended a better location himself.
Cedric also knew that with Amber at the helm of planning (which she'd apparently been waiting for, considering she had a writing tablet already filled with concepts and details), things would come together smoothly and quickly. Sofia even willingly allowed her sister to plan her whole wedding, including the ceremony afterward, the colors, the wedding party… "I trust you. You know me well." That's what she'd said, anyway, and Amber was ready to prove how true that statement was.
This had all been a continuous preparation the last two months, and it was now March 1. The wedding was scheduled for March 8, so they had precisely a week until they were married. At this point, Reimagian officials had agreed to their request to marry in their realm and have the afterparty there as well. Merlin was on board with officiating. The wedding party (Amber, Vivian, Ivy, Calista, Desmond, James, Greylock, and Angel as bridesmaids or matrons and groomsmen; Tanya as the flower girl; and Corban and Nana as double ring bearers) was arranged, and Amber even had all their outfits planned and ordered (and arrived, thankfully). The guests were all officially invited (including Greylock's family and Sir Finlay's family, along with Cedric's family—even his nearly estranged cousin Selena the Selfless had agreed to come, which had shocked yet thrilled him). Some of Sofia's old classmates were also planning to come, including Zandar and a newly pregnant Hildegard, along with Clio, Ruby, and Jade.
Some others, like Dante and his family, Dexter and Brexley, Prince Daniel, and so on were also unable to come for a variety of reasons. Granted, considering many of them were either in charge of a kingdom or realm or aided with such a thing, it wasn't too surprising. However, they'd all sent their well wishes and even a few gifts for the couple.
Of course, they'd invited those from the Mystic Isles (including the former pirate crew, Bonvis and Yohanna with Vibbi, Butterford, and several others). Given the nature of the isles and those who worked, there was no guarantee they'd be able to come, but most said they would try. Also, Sofia had sent out a special invitation to Elena to see if she and her friends or family would like to come, though she had yet to hear back. It was possible that with her reigning over her kingdom, and with all her friends and family preoccupied with their own duties, it wouldn't happen. But she'd have to wait and see with them as well.
Wormwood, Nina (now permanently staying in the tower with him), Crackle, and Clover were all rather excited about the event, especially since there would be plenty of food available. Wormwood had even shed a tear (which Sofia had gently teased him about) when he realized this was happening. Cedric and Sofia…were getting married. Sure, they'd practically seemed like they'd been married for a long time now, but this would be official. It was so surreal…
So now, it was a Saturday, just like it would be in a week when the actual wedding would take place. The initial preparations were done. The only thing remaining was the wedding itself…
Saturday, 7:03 PM
"I wouldn't mind just stealing you away right now so that we can avoid…all those people," Cedric whispered to Sofia as he held her closely while they were practicing their wedding dance. They were alone in the tower, the girls hanging out with Calista and Angel. Hearing her giggle, he smiled down at her before twirling her slowly then pulling her back toward him, locking her in his embrace.
"As much as I'm sure you'd enjoy that," she teased, beaming up at him, "everything's already planned. People are coming to see us… And I wouldn't want our friends and family to miss out on seeing us get married. It means a lot to them, but…"
"It means a lot to you too," he finished for her, humming as she nodded. "I know, my love. I was only joking."
"To an extent." She snickered, placing a kiss on his cheek as he chuckled. "Do you know that Amber wouldn't let me see your outfit?"
"Oh, really? She wouldn't let me see your gown either." He shook his head. "I know it's a tradition not to see the bride directly before the ceremony, but I was unaware that sharing the outfits was taboo as well."
"I think that might just be an Amber thing."
He nodded before releasing her, watching her step over to his desk and hoist herself onto its surface. He then frowned, walking in front of her, grasping her hands. "There's something we've not exactly talked about yet."
Sofia blinked at him before tilting her head. "What?"
He sighed dramatically. "Where are we going to live?"
She paused before laughing. "Really, Cedric?" She moved one of her hands from his and reached up, brushing her fingers through his bangs. "I think it would be great to stay here with you, in the tower… The girls can have my room to themselves."
"Y-You'd give up a perfectly comfortable bedchamber in the castle, just to…live here with me?"
"Oh, Cedric." She smiled, moving her hand to his cheek, her thumb slowly massaging the skin just underneath his right eye. She noticed the typical dark circles were far lighter, and probably due to the fact that she'd made certain he'd been getting plenty of sleep lately. If it meant her dragging him to his bed and forcing him to lie down, her next to him and cuddled into his embrace, so be it. "Isn't that what marriage is about? Being with the one you love? I don't care if it's in the castle or in the tower. I love both places for different reasons, but… As long as I'm with you, I'm happy."
He reached up and grasped her hand, kissing the back of it a few times, before smiling gently at her. "Have I told you how much I love you recently?"
"At least five times a day," she giggled before he leaned down to kiss her.
Sunday, 9:31 AM
"Sofia, look," Amber gushed, holding up a baby gown to her stomach, grinning. "With the new baby on the way, I'm kind of getting excited about getting some new clothes! Oh, if I have another girl, she'll be able to wear all of Alamea's clothes."
"I don't know, Amber," Sofia laughed as she watched her sister as she ran a hand over the baby gown and her still somewhat flat stomach. "I have a feeling this baby will probably be a boy."
"A boy…" She looked at Sofia through the floor-length mirror and smiled nervously. "I don't… I don't know how to handle boys. I could barely handle James, and he's my twin."
"Loving a baby will come naturally, no matter if it's a boy or a girl. You did fine with Alamea, being a first-time mother, and you'll do fine with the second baby too."
The future queen giggled softly as she turned, walking over to her sister (who was seated on Amber's bed, her hands resting on either side of her on the mattress), and placed a kiss to her forehead. "You're my favorite sister."
Sofia smiled playfully up at her. "Also your only sister."
"Hmm." She placed the baby gown onto the bed before sitting down next to Sofia. "Are you excited about the wedding?"
"Excited… Nervous… Scared…"
Amber frowned. "Nervous, I get. But why are you scared?"
Sofia shrugged, twirling the end of her braid around her fingers. "I guess… I'm scared that something's going to happen to ruin it all. We haven't exactly had the best of luck with bad guys leaving us alone, and… We'll be in Reimagia, which is where Kinoroh was, and he almost killed Cedric, and—"
"Sofia, calm down." She reached over, grasping her sister's hand. "Look, I know you and Cedric have battled many, many evil beings in the past. And maybe there will be others in the future. But I promise you, if one even thinks about invading my little sister's wedding, I will unleash the wrath of the pregnant woman, and those bad guys will plead for mercy and be sent running back to whatever fiery bottomless pit they came from."
The younger princess laughed at that. "Oh, Amber… But you're right, I guess… I just need to stay positive that things will turn out all right."
"They will," Amber assured her, standing, and pulling her sister to her feet. "Come on. Let's go get some breakfast, and then we'll take a look at my planning list and make sure one more time that every little thing is in place."
Sofia smiled, rolling her eyes as she was pulled away. "Whatever you say, Amber…"
Thursday, 9:38 PM
"Greylock and his family and Sir Finlay and his family are settled in," Cedric informed Sofia as he lowered next to her at the top of the tower, reclining onto a blanket she'd laid out so that they could spend one more night together, just 'observing the stars,' as she'd indicated, before they travelled to Reimagia the next morning to prepare for the wedding on Saturday. Thankfully, there would be plenty of flying coaches to take everyone, so that was one thing they didn't have to worry about. "At least we got to rehearse for the wedding before leaving tomorrow." Seeing her nod, he frowned thoughtfully. "Oh, and have you heard anything from the Mystic Isles group?"
"I know Butterford and Chrysta said they were coming when she called me on the Enchantlet. Yohanna and Bonvis are with Vibbi on a mission, and they'll be gone for another month. I think the other Protectors are also busy, and I haven't heard from Garnette and her guys." She shrugged. "I'm just glad that Chrysta is coming, and Butterford was a pleasant surprise."
"Oh, yes, I wonder how he's doing now." He thought it was rather endearing how close the former villain and his fiancée had gotten recently. The wayward man giving up his own safety and losing his closest companion must have really done a number on his psyche, but evidently, he'd begun the recovery process. It was eerily similar to what Bonvis had gone through, from what he could tell, and if Butterford was anything like the former evil sorcerer, then he'd be better off in the Mystic Isles, where he could heal and grow. He glanced over to Sofia, who was suspiciously quiet. "Are you all right, my dear?"
"Mm. I'm fine…" She moved closer to him, retrieving her wand from her robe-dress pocket and summoning a blanket to fall over them, before she replaced the wand. She rested her head on Cedric's chest as he began rubbing her back. "I, um…" She felt a warmth spread through her, focused especially on her cheeks, as she sighed. "I've been wondering… Are you…? Um…" She groaned softly, tucking her head against his chest. "Never mind."
"No, no, Sofia. It's fine." He reached down with his free hand and gently lifted her head up, smiling at her. "You clearly have something on your mind… What is it?"
"I…don't even know how to ask this…" She watched as he lowered his hand to his stomach, and then she finally asked, "I know we've talked about it a little bit before, but...do you think…Nana and Tanya will be our only children?"
The question caught Cedric off guard, and he slowed his hand against her back as he stared at her in surprise. "O-Oh, y-you mean…" Seeing her nod, he considered the question. For the last few years, he'd gotten used to having Nana and Tanya as their daughters. For some reason, until only recently, biological children with Sofia had rarely come to his mind, except that one time when Miss Nettle had inquired if they were planning to pursue that route. At the time, he'd told her he'd love a family with the princess. If it happened, he'd be thrilled, because that would be a child of love from him and Sofia. If it didn't… Well, they had two beautiful little girls they'd already adopted and accepted into their lives. He'd honestly be happy either way, but… Now that she'd asked… "W-What would you want, Sofia?" Actually, yeah, that was a better route to take. He wanted to gauge her thoughts first before answering her. Granted, she'd indicated her interest in having children with him last year, but what if that had changed? What if...?
"Honestly?" Seeing him nod, she allowed her fingers to trace the lining of his robe's seams, enjoying the feel of the soft fabric under her skin. "…I want more than anything…to have a baby with you…" Hearing him gasp quietly, she turned her gaze back to him and smiled. "Well, relax, Cedric. I don't mean right now." She giggled.
"O-Oh, no, m-my love. I, um…" He cleared his throat, his hand along her back tangling into her hair for some strange form of leverage, though still being gentle so that he didn't hurt her. "I'd… I would love that, Sofia, and you know that… You're a good mother to Nana and Tanya, and I…have no doubt you'd be the same to any…any baby who…" He caught his breath, trying to settle his rapidly beating heart, before sighing, offering her a contented smile. "I'd love it if we were to have a baby too. I really would…" He hummed thoughtfully as she stilled her hand. "I'm not sure how great of a father to an infant I'd be, but…"
"You're kidding, right?" She sat up, bracing her hands on either side of his head, and leaned down to kiss his nose, making him laugh. "Cedric, when Nana first arrived, despite being sort of the same age as Erine, she was basically a baby herself: helpless, scared, unable to speak… You took care of her like she was our baby. I mean, she is, but… You know what I mean."
"Yes, but with Nana, we've never had to do diaper changes or anything like that." He made a face as the princess laughed. "I remember those days with Calista. Not pleasant." He hummed as she calmed her laughter, smiling softly at him. "But I suppose… It's just one of those things that we'll figure out, right? I personally think you're already a wonderful mother."
She blushed as he leaned up a bit, pressing his forehead to hers. "And you're already a wonderful father, Cedric…" With little else to say, she leaned down, kissing him gently. "I love you, Cedric."
He smiled. "I love you too, Sofia. And in two days… The whole realm will know it." He moved his hand from her hair to the back of her head, pulling her closer, kissing her once more.
Friday, 7:30 AM
"Let's hurry, everyone," Baileywick insisted as he helped Violet get the luggage, visitors, and royal family members to their correct flying coaches. "We're due to leave at 8:00 AM on the dot, and we still have to make sure things are set inside."
"Are you sure you two don't want to come tonight?" Sofia asked Baileywick as he stopped his directing momentarily to look at her. "They've got plenty of rooms, they said. They have a new dormitory built and everything."
The ex-steward chuckled before placing a hand on her shoulder. "Princess Sofia, as much as I'd love to, Violet needs some help with the castle. We'll be along tomorrow afternoon for the wedding though. I promise we won't miss that." He smiled as she leaned forward and hugged him, and he returned the hug promptly. "I'm happy for you both," he mumbled softly, gingerly kissing the crown of her head, something he'd never done before but felt the occasion warranted. When she stared up at him with teary eyes but a soft smile, he lifted his hands to her face, using his thumbs to wipe away the tears. "No crying the day before your wedding, Sofia. This is a happy occasion, and you of all people deserve to be happy."
Sofia couldn't think of any better response than to kiss his cheek and hug him again. "Thank you, Baileywick." Once she parted from him, she climbed into the AutoCoach, where Nana and Tanya, along with Wormwood, Nina, Clover, and Crackle, were already sitting. Now she just needed to wait for Cedric, who was finishing up some last-minute checks in the workshop.
"Wands, check," Cedric mumbled as he looked around. "Clothing, check—in the AutoCoach. Vows…" He frowned, frantically searching his robe's pockets, feeling nothing. "Where are those blasted things?"
"Looking for these?" Merlin asked as he appeared in a flash of smoke, chuckling as Cedric coughed and fanned it away. He waved a few parchments in Cedric's direction. "Silly boy, you asked me to hold onto them for you."
"Ah, so I did." He nodded. "I—again, Merlin, I can't thank you enough for doing this for Sofia and me."
"I couldn't think of a better couple to officiate for," he laughed. He hummed softly as he watched Cedric pause and just look around the tower, his bag of wands and possibly other magical items held tightly in his hands. "It's not the end of something, Cedric…" His eyes twinkled as the younger sorcerer turned to look at him curiously. "It's the beginning… The start of something wonderful. A brand-new journey for you and the princess, and your entire family. Don't let fear hold you back."
Cedric nodded while contemplating everything… So many memories in this tower... From their initial lessons, to experiments for her father, to reading stories for Sapphire when she was little, to falling asleep at the worktable until she came to wake him up, to a few dances here and there… And then last night, when they observed the stars together… For a long time, he'd thought of his tower as a lonely place. That had changed when Sofia had come into his life. "It is the beginning, isn't it?" He glanced at Merlin, who just smiled knowingly toward him, and this time, he returned the smile.
9:15 AM
After the group of travelers had taken off to Reimagia, Baileywick and Violet were back in the castle, working hard once again. They were in charge of the castle tonight, making sure everything was spic and span, prepared for the royal family when they returned late tomorrow evening.
"I'm still tryin' to figure out why they're comin' home late tomorrow night," Violet told Baileywick as they worked together to unfold and place a gold tablecloth on the dining table. "Wouldn't it make sense to stay another day?"
"I'm sure King Roland doesn't want to be away from home too long," Baileywick reasoned. "Plus, they are still in charge, so I don't think they have much of a choice." He smiled as he saw Violet sigh and wipe her forehead after placing out the flatware and some new candles. "I think you could use a break."
"I'm fine," she insisted, though she didn't resist when he gently grasped her wrist, pulling her toward him with a mildly stern expression aimed her way. "Baileywick…"
"Violet," he countered, smiling a bit as he reached up, playfully tugging on her braid. "That's enough for now. We can get back to work after a little break at least."
She stared at him for a minute before laughing. "Who are you? What have you done with the old Baileywick?"
"He's retired. And retirement opened his eyes to what…" He lifted the same hand from her braid to her cheek, gently stroking it. "…and who…is most important in life."
The stewardess blushed modestly before giggling softly. "Well… I suppose you're right. The chores will still be there in a little while." She moved forward a bit, hugging him. "Admit it," she whispered softly with a tiny grin, "you just want me to yourself."
He chuckled, whispering back, "And I always will."
3:48 PM
"Wow," James breathed as he helped Vivian out of their coach, followed by Ruby and Jade. "This place is brilliant."
"Yeah," Jade agreed, looking around, before finally looking back at Sofia. "Forget just getting married here, Sofia. You and Cedric could live here."
Sofia laughed. "It's not exactly supposed to be a 'living' place, Jade. It's a training place for all the sorcerers and sorceresses in the realms. Sure, you live here, but only for a little while."
"Ah, the Enchancian wedding party," a familiar voice greeted genially, and Cedric and Sofia instantly recognized Lord Palazzo as he walked up to the large group. "We have your dormitory all set up. You'll be staying in the Stórlofti. There are fifteen different rooms, so you can choose which ones you'd like to occupy. They're all set up with the same amenities and furniture, and they're rather comfortable, if I do say so myself."
"No more Grand Cupola?" Sofia asked playfully, smiling as he turned his gaze toward her.
"Princess Sofia, you look radiant as ever." He chuckled as she blushed modestly before leaning against Cedric. "Actually, it's still around, but it's occupied right now by two other sorcerers in training. Come, I'll show you to the Stórlofti."
All the small families or friend groups were led to their own room, but Sofia was pulled aside before she could attempt to go with Cedric.
"Uh-uh, Sofia," Ruby teased with a knowing grin. "You know the rules. The groom can't see the bride 24 hours before the wedding. And you've got ten minutes till that happens."
"That's a rule?" Clover asked Crackle as they sat aside near a berry bush, chowing down on the food. He attempted to toss one into his mouth, but Wormwood snatched it midair and swallowed it. "Hey, birdbrain! Get your own berries!"
Wormwood smirked at him. "You seem as clueless as always."
Nina rolled her eyes before nudging the other raven. "And it's not exactly a 'rule' that they can't see each other before the wedding. More like a bad luck thing. I've heard a lot of people talking about it over the years: they think it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride 24 hours before the wedding."
"That's silly," Crackle laughed. "Who came up with that superstition?"
"Eh, probably the same moron who came up with the whole 'break a mirror and suffer for seven years' thing," Clover reasoned, shrugging.
"If I've got ten minutes," Sofia began as she slid her arm from Ruby's hold, "then I don't want to waste it." She grabbed Cedric's hand and pulled him along, away from the crowd.
"What is she doing?" Vivian wondered.
"Probably reminding him not to wear his robe tomorrow," Greylock snickered, stopping only when Ivy elbowed him. "What? I'm just saying… It's a habit we've yet to break, as sorcerers."
"Speak for yourself," Sir Finlay joked, gesturing toward his normal robe-less outfit.
"What's going on, Sofia?" Cedric asked gently as she stopped them several feet away from the others. "Are you all right?"
"Oh, I'm fine. I just wanted to give this to you." She removed the ring she was wearing and turned his palm up, smiling as she slid the small treasure into his hand, closing his fingers around it. "I can't wait to get it back tomorrow though."
He chuckled, pocketing the ring, and then pulling her into a warm embrace. "It's not too late if you wanted to just elope."
She giggled, knowing he was joking. "As much as I'd like that…" She smiled up at him. "I think it's a little late. And besides…" She nodded toward Nana and Tanya, who were playing as they chased Corban, Sapphire, Davina, and Zinnia around. "At least with us here, the girls get to be part of this. I wouldn't want to leave them out." She then glanced back at him. "But don't worry, Cedric. After tonight…" She leaned in, ghosting her lips over his and whispering, "You won't have to be alone anymore…" She had just barely kissed him when she felt herself pulled away from the sorcerer's arms.
"Time's up," Ruby insisted, tugging her friend along. "Later, Cedric! We'll see you tomorrow!"
Before anyone realized what was going on, Ruby and Jade had pulled Sofia into the Stórlofti, leaving everyone else to head to their own rooms.
"Papa, where is Mama?" Tanya wondered as she walked up to Cedric, holding Nana's hand.
"She's, um…" He shrugged and smiled sheepishly toward the two confused girls. "She's with her friends for the night, my darlings. It's a… It's a wedding thing."
"Oh." That's all Tanya said before shrugging. "Are we staying with you?"
"Yes, it would seem so." He leaned down and picked up Nana, chuckling as she climbed up to ride on his shoulder, and then he took Tanya's hand. "Let's go then."
9:12 PM
"Ceddy-kins, come here," Winifred whispered from the sorcerer's temporary doorway, smiling as he carefully moved the sleeping girls onto the bed before hurrying over to her. "They go to sleep early? Lucky."
He chuckled. "Indeed. What's wrong, Mummy?"
"Oh, nothing's wrong, darling." She guided him back into the room, sitting onto the loveseat near the door, gesturing toward the cushion beside her. She watched as he sat down next to her, the expression on his face one of tiredness, excitement, and nervousness. "I'm proud of you, you know."
Cedric glanced over at her, sighing as she patted his hands. "Thank you, Mummy… I forget sometimes how much I need to hear that…"
She patted her lap once, chuckling as he hesitated before turning a bit and lowering his head into her lap. She brushed her hand through his hair, fluffing out his bangs as she did so. "Listen to Mummy, Cedric. There's no need to be worried, like I know you are. Things will be all right. You and Sofia were made for each other, and you've already had a wonderful life together, and you'll continue to have a wonderful life together. You're great parents, and you'll no doubt give me some more beautiful grandchildren—"
"Mother," Cedric sighed, flushing, as he heard her snickering above him. "Although… We have discussed that…"
"Mm… You can both do as you like, of course. Whatever happens naturally. Regardless, I've seen this union coming for a long time. I'm glad we get to be a part of it, all of us: Cordelia, Calista, and even your cousin Selena—when she comes in tomorrow… Your Grammy would have been thrilled." She smiled softly as he sighed and nodded. "Your father and I couldn't be happier for the both of you."
He finally yawned, relaxing at his mother's gentle touch. "Sofia makes me happy, Mummy… Happier than I've ever been."
She smiled. "I know, love. Now get some rest."
Before he knew it, Cedric had fallen asleep in his mother's caring arms for the first time since he was a child.
10:01 PM
"Feel better?" Amber asked as Sofia sat down on the large bed, her hair still wet from having washed it nearly an hour ago, though she was currently using a soft towel to pat it dry. "Here, let me." She took the towel from Sofia before deftly lifting her hair, scooping it into the towel, and carefully yet efficiently beginning to help dry it. "Hmm." She smirked as she inhaled a sweet scent, likely from Sofia's shampoo. "Still using the strawberry shampoo, huh?"
She nodded. "It's my favorite." She yawned as Amber continued her motions. "Amber, you don't have to do that. I have a drying spell."
"It's fine. I wanted to at least do something for you before tomorrow."
"Are you kidding?" The younger princess turned slightly, catching the future queen's eye. "You planned this whole thing, from the location down to the tiniest details. By the time you were done, Cedric and I barely had to do anything. Amber, you've done so much already."
"Well, that's what sisters do…" She smiled warmly as she tossed the towel into a nearby laundry basket, and she then watched her sister pick up her wand from the bed and fully dry and detangle her hair. "Okay, I don't do magic, but I'd like a wand and at least that spell, because…" She lifted her hand to flip her currently smooth blonde locks. "This can become troublesome when I wake up."
"I know," Sofia laughed. "I don't know how you manage to do that. It's a really weird gift—or maybe a curse." She smirked as the other princess whined playfully. Before long, an appreciative smile formed on her lips instead. "It's nice to have you guys here… I wasn't expecting so many people to travel here just for our wedding."
"I'm not surprised so many came, and more are coming tomorrow. Everyone loves you guys, Sofia." Amber grinned sheepishly. "Okay, maybe not everyone… You do have like 103 enemies." She giggled as Sofia laughed. "But you know what I mean. Oh, and you know, it's actually a good thing we practiced the wedding stuff before we left Enchancia. I forgot all about the 24-hour rule."
Sofia hummed with a small roll of her eyes. "I still think it's kind of silly, honestly. But better safe than sorry, I guess. Cedric and I don't need any more bad luck following us…"
"Yeah…" Truer words had never been spoken. Poor Cedric and Sofia couldn't catch a break sometimes, and Amber often wondered how they coped with all the evil beings chasing them, the dangerous situations, the dark magic… She certainly couldn't have handled it as well as they had, or at least she believed so anyway. "Well, let's not think about that, okay? Think happy thoughts!" She smiled brightly, causing Sofia to return the gesture. "You're getting married tomorrow, Sofia!"
She laughed softly. "I know… And I'm happy." She smiled fondly at her sister. "Truly happy, Amber…" She sighed contentedly as the other princess pulled her into a hug, melting some of her nerves away. "Thanks for everything."
"Any time, dear sister." Amber hummed, caressing the younger girl's back. "And I mean that."
Sofia smiled gently. "I know…"
Saturday, 5:32 AM
People were already starting to wake up to get prepared for the day. The wedding was going to be at 4:00 PM, so they had plenty of time ahead of them. The wedding party would begin getting dressed and prepared around 2:00 PM (if not before then). Everyone else pretty much had the leisure to do whatever they needed to do for the next several hours.
Sofia was sleeping fitfully, tossing and turning most of the night. She had dreams of darkness, vacant spaces, candle lights blowing out, and indistinct whispers filling her ears. Her neck hurt quite a bit for some reason, and she had a horrible stomachache that she couldn't explain. Sure, she was nervous about the ceremony, hoping everything would go well, but… This was different. And she knew it—
She bolted awake when she heard a shrill cry: a baby's cry. She looked around, panting, only to see Amber fast asleep next to her on the large bed. Her sister had stayed with her this last night, and she was forever grateful for that.
She frowned as she slid from the bed, readjusting her pants legs (since they'd gotten messed up during her fitful sleep), and hurried toward the door, pulling it open. She sighed when she saw Sir Finlay walking by at that time, trying to calm a crying baby Finn (Finlay, Jr.). "Oh, Sir Finlay…"
The older man smiled kindly toward the princess before frowning in concern as he saw her expression. "Princess Sofia, are you all right?"
"O-Oh, yeah, I'm fine…" She smiled sheepishly as she lifted her hands to play with some of her hair. "Just…a bad dream… And I heard Finn crying, so… I was concerned."
"Ah, yes." He chuckled. "Someone was hungry. And I love Gabby, but she's not a morning person, so I tend to feed the children when they wake up—usually around this time." He nodded at her. "Why don't you get a little more rest, Princess? It will probably relax you a bit before the wedding this afternoon."
"Yeah, yeah… I'll… I'll do that." She giggled as Finn stopped squirming and crying and just looked at her, his tear-lined eyes shining with curiosity as he stared at her. "Hi, sweetie. Are you hungry?" She reached up and tapped the little boy's nose, causing him to giggle and shyly hide his face in his father's pajama top. "Aww, someone's shy."
"Immensely." He rolled his eyes. "Say goodbye, Finn. Let's get you some breakfast." He chuckled as the baby cooed against his chest before glancing toward Sofia. "We'll see you later today, Princess Sofia." With that, they headed off.
Sofia shut the door behind her and turned, noticing that Amber still appeared to be fast asleep. She sighed and walked over to the bed, sliding under the covers and pulling them over her head.
"Bad dream?"
The auburn-haired girl sighed and lowered the covers, turning to face her sister, who was now awake. "Yeah…"
"Want to talk about it?"
Sofia shrugged. "I don't remember much, honestly… It's kind of like other bad dreams I've had before: just darkness, emptiness, loneliness, fear…"
Amber scoffed. "Rude. You shouldn't be having nightmares on the day of your wedding."
She laughed quietly. "I'm not sure that's how dreams work, Amber… They kind of come and go without our permission."
"Don't let it ruin your day though, okay? Things will be wonderful. You and Cedric are getting married…" She couldn't help the excited little squeal that escaped her lips, causing Sofia to giggle. "It's about time too. You two took forever to get together. I'm just glad you didn't have a long engagement. That would have been torture."
"Oh, Amber. Always so dramatic…" She grinned as Amber hummed playfully, a smirk on her face. "Alamea stayed with Desmond last night, huh?"
"Yeah. She's a kicker, and neither of us needed that right now." She patted her stomach to prove a point. "Besides, it was nice to get some quality time with my sister."
"Yeah… It was." Sofia turned back over and closed her eyes. "Amber?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you think Cedric and I…will be happy?"
"Oh, Sofia." Amber reached out and touched her sister's shoulder. "You already are, and you know that. You may have some struggles and things to overcome, like any couple, but you've already faced a lot together and beaten evil forces. There's not much that you guys can't do together. So yes… I think you'll be happy."
She smiled as Amber lowered her hand, snuggling into the covers once more. "Thanks, Amber… That's what I was hoping you'd say…"
1:48 PM
Everyone was now awake, cleaned up, dressed (or getting there), and well-fed. The other guests attending the wedding had either arrived or were on their way. Desmond, James, Greylock, and Angel were sent to help Cedric get ready, and Amber, Vivian, Ivy, and Calista were with Sofia in the room where she'd been staying.
Baileywick and Violet had just arrived and were with the king and queen, and Selena the Selfless was now there and spending time with Goodwyn and Winifred, as well as Cordelia and Nigel (who'd naturally tagged along to be with his 'sweet sugar lips,' he'd called her, much to Calista's embarrassment). Alamea was with Miranda and Roland, since she was too young to be in the wedding party. Zandar and Hildegard had also arrived and were with Ruby and Jade. Corban, Nana, and Tanya were all with Cedric now, each dressed and patiently awaiting their roles in the wedding, which would be in just over two hours.
Tanya's flower girl dress was a soft amethyst tulle lace ensemble, the upper bodice and long sleeves a darker shade and somewhat sheer along the arms, and the skirt fanning out at her ankles. For once, her feet were covered in silver shoes, shimmering when they caught the light. Her white hair was woven into a braid, a few lavender blossoms tying off the end.
Nana was in a floor-length white gown, tied in the middle with a golden sash (similar to Cedric's bowties). She wore simple white flats with carved flower patterns on the toes, and her hair was tied into little pigtails with a string of violets wrapped around each section of hair.
Corban wore dark slacks and shiny black shoes, with a white collared button-up shirt beneath a plum vest with silver buttons and a matching tie. His hair was a bit more controlled than usual, though each time he had a little burst of energy, Tanya had to gingerly comb it back into place.
James, Desmond, and Greylock were already dressed as well, each in a dark outfit with purple accents: black slacks and shoes; black vest with dark purple patterns around the silver buttons; and a long, semi-asymmetrical long-sleeved vest-coat, sporting the same purple and additional silver patterns along the fabric. Angel, due to his culture, wore his own similar outfit: dark pants with a few fringes along the ends, black moccasin boots, and a western-styled black fringe top with purple accents along the collar. His usual jewelry was still in place, and his hair was long and loose, though several feathers were tied into some of his locks.
Last was Cedric. Like the others, he wore black slacks and shoes. However, his top portion consisted of a white button-up shirt beneath a dark purple vest with gold buttons and a matching long-tailed jacket that swept down to his calves, and his usual golden bowtie around his neck. He didn't wear his normal gloves for the ceremony; instead, he was wearing some fingerless gloves that perfectly matched his jacket, and they were loose enough to be able to slide his wedding ring in place, next to his BerryBand.
"We look rather fetching, if I do say so myself," Greylock gushed as he adjusted his outfit while grinning into the mirror before him. He glanced back at Cedric. "Did you pick these out?"
"Princess Amber did," he told him distractedly, attempting to straighten his jacket cuffs. "She did almost everything since Sofia and I were always so busy."
"She loved every moment of it too," Desmond laughed. "I think she spent more time planning your wedding than ours."
Cedric chuckled softly as he finished adjusting his cuffs. "And we truly appreciate it too. I don't know what we'd do without her." He stood up momentarily, holding a hand to his head as a wave of dizziness washed over him. He instantly held onto the bed for support. "Oh…"
James grinned. "There's the nervousness I was expecting. I got you, Cedric." He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a little cloth, parting it to reveal a mint leaf. "Here. Chew on this for a bit. It'll help."
He raised an eyebrow at the prince as he accepted his offer. "Now where did you learn that, James? You're not exactly what I'd call a botanist."
"No, but Des is. And he told me the same thing before I asked Vivian to court me. And it worked."
Shrugging after seeing Desmond and even Angel nod in agreement, he slid the mint leaf into his mouth to allow it to work its magic. He did feel a little better the moment he chewed at the leaf, a sigh escaping through his nose.
"You'll be fine," Greylock assured him, turning and folding his arms before offering his friend a sincere smile. "It'll feel like everything's happening so fast, but someday, you'll look back on this day and realize it really didn't. You'll remember all the little details you're going to forget for a while. You'll remember not only the way Sofia looks when you finally get to see her, but the perfume she's wearing, the things you'll whisper to each other…" He sighed, apparently reminiscing of his own memories with Ivy.
"Do you need a moment?" Cedric joked, chuckling as Nana walked over and tugged on his pants leg, a look of happiness on her face as he scooped her up.
"I'm good." The other sorcerer laughed as he clapped a hand over Cedric's shoulder. "The point is, Cedric… This will be a day you store away in your memory forever, as a time where everything you've ever wanted finally came to be. You'll get the girl. You'll keep the girl. You'll love the girl."
"I already do…" He smiled down at Nana, who returned the gesture. "Very much…"
3:01 PM
Calista finished tying the sash at the back of Amber's dress and made sure her hair was settled in place, with the waves tumbling to her midback. Vivian did the same for Ivy. Each of the matrons or maids was wearing the same dress: long and flowing amethyst satin with semi-sheer sleeves that covered part of their hands. They wore simple matching flats, which couldn't really be seen beneath the dresses. Each matron or maid also had a single flower: a Soulicia, much to Sofia's surprise and then amusement. Amber really did think of everything…
Miranda had stepped in to help with the finishing touches for Sofia's wedding gown. It was absolutely Sofia: modest but slightly off-the-shoulder, long-sleeved, and with a flowing train that gathered around her feet like a blanket of pure snow. While the gown appeared simple at first glance, when it caught the light, one could see some shimmering sparkles, enhanced by magic. Her hair was mostly down but half up in an elegant waterfall braid, and her sheer veil, held in place by her tiara that Cedric had made her many years ago, now resized to fit her as a young adult, spanned down the length of the dress, tiny diamond strawberries sewn into the fabric. She wore matching shoes with the tiniest bit of a heel, if for nothing else, then to stop herself from stepping on her train. The only jewelry she wore at the moment were the Amulet of Avalor and her BerryBand. Her GuardoRing, ES bracelet, and Enchantlet were safely stowed away in her luggage. Besides, she would be acquiring a new and very important addition very soon…
While the other four were applying the finishing touches to their hair and makeup, Sofia stood still as her mother fussed over making sure everything was just right and in its proper place. She smiled as Miranda sighed, standing back up, her eyes clearly tired from all the crying she'd done earlier. "Mom…"
Miranda lifted her gaze to her daughter and smiled sweetly, taking her hand. "My baby girl… Sofia, you look…so beautiful. And happy…"
The princess giggled. "Being in love does that, I guess…" She reached out with her free hand and ran her fingers over Miranda's maroon and pink gown, embedded with small sapphires and diamonds, just for the occasion. "I would have given this up, you know?"
The queen blinked, tilting her head. "The wedding?"
"Well, that… And…everything. If, for some reason, you guys hadn't been as accepting of Cedric and me together because of our status differences, I would have relinquished my title. And if he'd really wanted it, I would have eloped with him from day one. But…" She giggled softly as she then held both of Miranda's hands. "He knew how important it was for me to have you guys there, and I think it was just as important to him, whether he knew it or not."
"Oh, Sofia…" She laughed quietly. "There's the good heart we all love. The fact that you'd give up all of that just to be with him speaks volumes… He's a great man, not just a great sorcerer. And we knew that if you trusted him, admired him, loved him, and wanted to be with him…then, he must be something really special. You care for everyone, but Sofia, your heart has belonged to him for longer than you think, and I believe you've had his even longer."
Sofia sighed heavily, feeling a shuddery breath escaping her as she smiled gratefully at her mother. "Come on, Mom… Don't make me cry on my wedding day…" She giggled as Miranda dropped her hands and carefully maneuvered around the dress train to hug her, kissing her cheek softly. "I love you."
"I love you too, Sofia."
"Oh, I almost forgot!" Amber turned to a silver case and opened it, withdrawing a bouquet of hydrangeas, a soft piece of fabric tied around the bouquet in the center with purple and turquoise ribbons, which curled and fell several inches below the stems. "Can't send you to your wedding without hydrangeas. It would be a terrible idea."
Sofia smiled, accepting the bouquet and holding them to her heart, remembering the first time the hydrangeas had really meant something to her… Valentine's Day… Years ago now… "Thank you, Amber…" She looked up and allowed her smile to linger as she gazed at her friends and family. "Thanks to all of you…"
Calista winked. "Think nothing of it, Auntie Sofia." She snickered as Sofia blushed. "Yeah, that will take some getting used to…"
"You really don't have to do that, Calista." The princess smirked. "Unless you want me to call you 'Niece Calista' the whole time."
"Hmm…" The dark-haired teen shrugged. "I think I'll pass. You're right. Best to keep the usual titles." She then smiled warmly. "But I am thrilled that I can tell people, 'That's my aunt and one of my best friends. She married my Uncle Ceddy, finally."
Sofia laughed. "Oh, Calista…" She turned when a knock fell on the door, and she promptly started laughing when all of the girls ran to cover her—just in case. "Guys…"
"I'll get it," Miranda volunteered, amused, before walking toward the door and pulling it open. She blinked. "Um, can I help you?"
A familiar voice asked, "May I speak with Princess Sofia? I'm sorry it's at such a bad time…"
"Butterford?!" Sofia gently ushered her maids and matrons aside, smiling happily as she saw the former pirate at her door. She noticed his face was clean shaven, his outfit was clean and crisp (a flowing white top that was tucked into some pressed black trousers and a pair of dark boots), and his hair was tied into a loose ponytail. "Jas, sorry." She laughed as he smiled at her. "I'm so glad you made it, but… What are you doing here?"
"I…came to ask if it's all right if I played a song at your wedding. I sort of…wrote one for you and your groom."
She blinked in surprise. "Y-You did?" She was floored. She'd met Butterford during the events of the Bixtou Realm, when she and Cedric had to go undercover as a married couple—before they were even courting. He'd saved her, though. He'd saved her from getting hurt, even after someone very close to him had died, and they were supposed to be enemies. And… She glanced down at his hands, which were still covered in dark gloves as always, due to the abuse he'd suffered from his father a long time ago. He could…play? He'd told her he was unable to. "Jas…"
"It's the least I could do." A sincere smile formed on his visage, a sparkle in his eyes as he noticed her confused expression. "Please, Princess?"
Amber smiled as Sofia glanced at her. "It would be pretty neat if his song is what you walk down the aisle to, instead of the stringed instruments." She winked as the friends exchanged glances. "I'll take care of it."
Sofia nodded, smiling excitedly toward Butterford. "Absolutely, Jas… I'd love for you to play for our wedding. And… And thank you…"
"Consider it my wedding gift to you." He chuckled as she leaned forward and hugged him gently. "And it is my honor, Sofia…"
3:52 PM
Eight minutes… Eight minutes until the ceremony began. Eight minutes until the guests were completely hushed and focused. Eight minutes until a new journey began…
Cedric had been escorted to the marriage arch, where Merlin was standing, dressed in his finest blue robes. The water behind them crashed in its usual majestic way, and the guests before them were all seated in chairs, mixed around, because Cedric and Sofia basically shared the same friends, and soon, they'd share the same family.
Cedric caught the eye of Selena the Selfless, his dear cousin, and smiled, gesturing with his hands as a sign of gratitude that she'd made it. She silently mimicked the gesture, blowing a gentle kiss his way.
There was some string music currently playing, to fill in the silence, though Butterford was now seated at a magically conjured piano (Sir Finlay's doing, no doubt). He was absently trailing his gloved fingers over the keys, though never pressing too hard to create a sound.
The day wasn't too cold, though it wasn't exactly very warm either. Everyone was grateful for having dressed appropriately for the typically cool March weather.
After everyone in the audience had been seated (except Roland, who had slipped away to tend to his duties of walking Sofia down the aisle), Merlin smiled at the crowd. "On behalf of the royal family of Enchancia," he announced clearly and emphatically, so everyone could hear him over the crashing waves, "I would like to thank you all for being here today. This is a wonderful and even highly anticipated union between two people whom I consider dear friends, and I'm more than honored that they've asked me to initiate the services for them." He gave Cedric a quick and comforting smile, and he was glad to see the other sorcerer return it. Then, he nodded toward Butterford, who nodded as well.
Butterford inhaled slowly and then exhaled, removing his gloves and setting them aside. The scars were still there, but what many didn't know was that he'd been able to get some physical therapy and powerful healing in the Mystic Isles, and while his hands weren't fully back to their normal state, he did have one amazing benefit from the healing: he could finally play the piano again… Not perfectly like he used to, but enough to make him feel like progress had been made. And now, he and everyone else would find out just how much he had progressed.
The soft music flowed from the keys, hesitant at first, but slowly becoming more confident. And as he played, the procession began, with the maids and matrons approaching with their Soulicias.
Every wave, every tide
Caps the surface of my mind
As I think of
How much I love you
Amber walked first, with Desmond escorting her. She stood to the side of Merlin before winking at Cedric, grinning as he chuckled softly and shook his head, with Desmond standing next to him.
Every island on the sea
Seems a peaceful place to me
But not as peaceful
If I'm without you
Next, Vivian and James walked down the aisle, parting to head to their assigned areas.
For I once settled on the shore
But I have always wanted more
Following Vivian and James were Ivy and Greylock, who were apparently trying to hold in some snickers or giggles or something, considering Ivy kept subtly slapping her husband on the arm. When they were in place, Cedric shot his friend a questioning look, but he rolled his eyes when he got nothing out of him.
Oceans deep, oceans wide
Like the way I feel inside
My love for you is like the tide
Calista and Angel were last to walk forward, stepping up to their spots.
Ever turning
Ever yearning
So please be mine
Tanya walked forward next, scattering blue and purple petals along the walkway. She was focused on her task, but she still remembered to keep a soft smile on her face, especially as she looked up and saw her Papa smiling at her. She stood next to him, turning to see the others preparing to walk.
On a galleon or on land
You just need to take my hand
And my heart beats fast
Because I'm near you
While Cedric watched (with a bit of amusement) Corban carrying Nana, who was carrying the pillow with their rings, down the aisle, he couldn't help but think how perfectly this song suited him and Sofia. Granted, he realized Butterford was the one playing, and he'd understood in the briefest of explanations that he'd written it, but really? He'd only known them for a very short period of time. Had he really picked up on their relationship that quickly? Were they that obvious all those years?
Hard to think, hard to breathe
When you cuddle close to me
But then I'm reminded
How much I adore you
Corban helped Nana to her feet, taking her hand and leading her over to Cedric to stand.
All eyes turned to the very end of the aisle, where Sofia had suddenly appeared in a curtain of magic, thanks to Cordelia, naturally. Roland stood proudly beside her, holding her arm, and trying very hard not to cry as he escorted her toward the arch.
Cedric's breath caught in his throat. 'O-Oh, Sofia…'
Yet I once settled on the shore
But I have always wanted more
Sofia kept her gaze on her sorcerer the whole time they walked, minding her steps, thinking only of reaching him and finally getting to share their love with everyone… 'Cedric…'
Oceans deep, oceans wide
Like the way I feel inside
My love for you is like the tide
Ever turning
Ever yearning
Roland grasped Cedric's hand, a smile on his face, and passed his daughter over to his friend: symbolically and physically. With a soft pat on the shoulder, he stepped aside as Butterford finished the song.
So please be mine
Butterford slipped on his gloves and quietly moved into his seat in the audience.
"Who gives the princess to be married to this man?" Merlin asked, glancing expectantly toward the king.
"Her mother and I," he responded, sounding like he was about to break down. He kissed Sofia on the cheek and whispered something to her before moving to his seat near Miranda, accepting a handkerchief from his ever-prepared wife.
Sofia sighed lightly as she gazed up at Cedric, who was looking at her fondly. It's like he was looking at her a different way though… Perhaps it was because of the dress. Or perhaps it was because they were about to get married. Reality was slowly starting to sink in, and she grasped his hands a little tighter for leverage, the bouquet clasped in both of their hands now, relief filling her as he did the same.
"Everyone," Merlin began, "I am not exaggerating when I say that I am beyond excited that this day has finally come. Cedric and I have been friends for many years, as I am friends with his family. And the endearing Princess Sofia has been a wonderful friend the last several years as well. I've watched them grow from mentor and mentee, to friends, to best friends, to quite possibly the most painful and exhausting will-they-won't-they potential couple in the realm…"
The audience chuckled at the wizard's overdramatized sigh that followed.
"To finally…admitting that they belong together, and they've always been meant for one another. Watching them during their courtship was fascinating. It's like they were getting to know each other from the start yet again, but in a different way. I guess that's what happens when you build such a strong foundation and let things happen naturally, of course. Granted, they'd still be 'naturally growing closer' if they hadn't finally stopped beating around the bush and admitted they were in love and had been in love for approximately 38 years." Again, the crowd laughed, and Merlin just smiled as even Cedric and Sofia blushed but laughed. "I say all that to say this: this is such a big day for Cedric and Sofia, but it's also a big day for the rest of us—for their family, their precious adopted daughters, their friends… A union as strong as theirs is to be celebrated and admired, and I'm honored to be the one to help it along."
James reached into his jacket pocket and passed something to Sofia as Cedric reached into his own and withdrew something, each of their hands now occupied with…
"The princess and her sorcerer have written their own vows," Merlin announced to the audience, who seemed pleased by the notion. "Cedric?"
Cedric cleared his throat, his cheeks a bit flushed as he realized that, for the first time in his life, all eyes—many of them—were on him…for something wonderful. He hated being the center of attention, but for Sofia… He'd do it. Over and over again. He glanced down at her, seeing her calm smile, and he felt more relaxed almost instantly. He unfolded the parchment he'd so carefully worked on several weeks ago and began reading its contents.
My Darling Sofia,
I will never forget our first meeting, as unorthodox as it might have been. I'll never quite know how you managed to warm my cold heart like you did, pulling me out of the darkness and into the light, over the course of the first few years of us knowing each other. You've remained a steady constant in my life. Even during the worst times, in the most dangerous situations, you've always given me hope. You've never given up on me, even when I wanted to give up on myself. You wouldn't allow me to falter, because you saw something greater than what I'd seen practically my entire life. You saved me from myself, when I thought I had nothing else to lose with my rash decisions that nearly cost me everything... You showed me love… For the first time in my life, with very few exceptions, I knew what it was like to give and receive love unconditionally. We always said we'd always be together, but I had no idea that promise would come true in this way. I'm so very glad it did, because…I cannot and do not want to live without you, my love. Thank you for being a true friend, a wonderful mother to our girls, and my light of hope when I've needed it the most. I vow to continue protecting you, cherishing you, and loving you all the days of my life.
In the audience, there were several people wiping at their eyes. While many had heard about the pure, sweet, honest relationship between the sorcerer and the princess, they didn't realize just how close they really were, or how much they'd been through together. Sure, Cedric hadn't exactly gone into detail, but they could read between the lines.
Sofia had to wipe a tear from her own eye before unfolding her own vows, gazing over them, before sighing once, smiling softly at Cedric as she began reading.
My Sweet Ceedric—I mean…Cedric…
Cedric scoffed audibly, making the group of people around them and the audience laugh.
You once told me you were no hero. I'd have to disagree. The moment I crashed into you, I looked up to you in a way I'd never done to anyone before. You knew magic. You were magic. You still are… As much as I could tell you were hesitant about allowing me into your life, you welcomed me in anyway. Over the years, we grew to respect and trust each other. Even when we ran into some terrible issues or treacherous experiences, you never stopped protecting me and saving me, over and over again. You've pushed me out of the way of danger, pulled me from the mountainside, retrieved me from the cusp of death, taken the blows for me… You've helped be become a stronger person, more competent at magic and at looking out for myself and others. You've shown me that there's beauty in pain and uncertainty, because even what seems to be broken can be fixed and renewed… You've helped me take care of two adorable girls, enhancing our bond and our capacity to love stronger and deeper than we've ever known. And you've helped me face a fear I'd always had: telling you how deeply in love with you I am…and have been for a long time. I don't know when friendship changed to a far deeper emotion that I'd never felt for anyone else. I just know this: I love you, Cedric the Sensational. And I can't wait to share my life, my heart, and my soul with you, forever. Because you are my hero: my love and my best friend, and my ah-mazing and wonderful sorcerer.
The tears that were shed during Cedric's speech didn't stop during Sofia's. It was clear how much these two loved and respected each other, and how far they'd come over the last several years together. They obviously made each other better people, and moving forward in marriage was just the most natural next step possible.
Cedric took both of their vows and placed them into his pocket before turning to Merlin, who addressed them.
"Next, we have the ring exchange."
Sofia passed her bouquet to Amber and knelt to Corban, kissing his cheek, as he passed Cedric's ring over to her. She watched as Nana hurriedly thrust Sofia's ring into Cedric's hands before clinging to his leg and yawning. She smiled, noting how tired the little girl probably was.
"Cedric," Merlin said, nodding toward the younger sorcerer, "place the ring on Sofia's third finger of her left hand and repeat after me: 'With this ring, I commit my life to you, to cherish and love you, for all the days ahead.'"
"With this ring," he repeated, sliding the ring onto her finger and caressing her hand softly as he looked at her sincerely, "I commit my life to you, to cherish and love you, for all the days ahead."
The princess sighed happily, glad to see her ring back on her finger: the pink and purple hearts in the gold setting sparkling in the afternoon sun. She glanced at Merlin as he addressed her next.
"Princess Sofia, place the ring on Cedric's third finger of his left hand and repeat after me: 'With this ring, I commit my life to you, to cherish and love you, for all the days ahead.'"
"With this ring, I commit my life to you, to cherish and love you, for all the days ahead." She nestled the ring into place, the black band with the beautiful iridescent blue and purple inlay so perfect for him.
"Excellent." The wizard stepped forward, between the couple, and held up his hands. "By the power vested in me, as a certified wizard, with all the rights and accolades bestowed upon me, I am elated to announce that, finally…" He stepped back a bit, guiding the groom and bride to each other, their hands clasping. "Cedric the Sensational and Princess Sofia of Enchancia are now husband…and wife. Cedric, kiss your bride."
Cedric had barely waited for Merlin to finish his command as he lifted his hands to the princess's face, kissing her warmly, deeply, and lovingly, as she threw her arms around his neck, the crowd around them cheering and applauding. He parted from her only to whisper, "I love you, my dear wife."
She giggled, kissing him softly on the lips again. "I love you too, my sweet husband."
Merlin dismissed the wedding party, the procession leaving down the aisle, before announcing the afterparty for the guests to attend.
The afterparty was indeed fun. Everyone was having a grand time, dancing, telling stories, eating… Corban and Nana even danced, in a goofy sort of manner that had him accidentally stepping on her feet, before they both fell into a heap of limbs and giggles. Cordelia and Nigel stole the show as they danced a tango. Baileywick and Violet even danced a few times, a modest display of affection shown when he kissed her gently on the lips in front of everyone (something that never would have happened even a few months ago).
Sofia and Cedric did get to talk to Butterford and sincerely thank him for the unexpected wedding song; he reminded them that, because the princess had selflessly given him a chance and taken the time to let him express his anguish and feelings after everything had transpired, that had started him on the path to healing. Once he realized he was able to make use of his hands and his voice again, he knew precisely how he wanted to celebrate: with a dedicated song to the couple who hadn't given up on him, even when he was ready to give up on himself. Thankfully, during his time in the Mystic Isles, he'd connected with Garnette and her group, and especially Muscles, for whatever reason. They were spending a lot of time together, and he felt safe and happy with someone who was quickly becoming an amazing friend, not to mention confidant. Of course, Cedric and Sofia were happy for him; if anyone deserved a second chance at life and happiness, it was Jas Butterford.
Sofia got to meet and talk to Selena the Selfless at last. Having heard her story a long time ago, she'd always wondered about the kind woman, and she found her to be absolutely amazing. "I really like her name too," she told Cedric after Selena left. "It's so pretty."
"Not prettier than 'Sofia,'" he returned, clearly flirting with her openly, now that they were married. Married… He would have to get used to that.
She giggled. "You don't have to flatter me, Cedric." She placed a hand on his cheek. "I've already married you…" It was an old joke with a new twist, and she found that she really liked it.
"Cedric, Sofia…" Goodwyn the Great smiled as the newlyweds turned around to acknowledge him and Winifred, who was holding his hand. "I'm so proud of you both. I knew you'd find the one someday, Cedric. I just wasn't expecting 'the one' to be our beloved princess, but…" He shrugged as Winifred chuckled. "It works. For some reason, it just works."
Sofia smiled at her father-in-law. "Apparently, a lot of people have been saying that about us for years… We were just the last ones to know."
"We're glad you finally realized it." Winifred hummed happily. "Welcome to our family, Sofia." She initiated a hug with the couple, and after a quick nudge to her not-as-touchy-feely husband, he joined the group hug. She reached up and playfully pinched Cedric's cheek, causing him to laugh. "Now, you two enjoy yourselves. Your father and I have a rug to cut." She grabbed Goodwyn's hand and pulled him away toward the dance floor, to the older man's dismay.
"Sofia!" Clover called as he and Crackle hurried up to her, him hopping into her arms and Crackle flying around them. "Sof, you're married!"
She laughed. "Y-Yeah, I am!"
"I see you brought your woodland creatures along," Cedric teased, reaching up to gently scratch Clover's head, the bunny responding affirmatively for a change. He glanced toward both of his shoulders as Wormwood and Nina alighted onto each. "What is this? An animal convention?"
"Would you have rather us skipped the wedding?" Wormwood drawled, sarcastic as ever. "Because we did have better things to do."
"You did not," Sofia chided, smirking at him. "Unless it involved continuing that nest I saw you both building…"
Nina's beak fell open as she glowered at the other bird. "Did you tell her?!"
"N-No! I—"
"Ooh, Wormy's in trouble!" Clover cackled. "What else is new? Once a rotten raven, always a rotten raven."
"Well, this 'rotten raven' is about to be a daddy, so he'd better change his tune and fast," Nina countered.
"What?!" Crackle screeched, nearly blowing fire out as she did. "There are gonna be little baby ravens flying around?! Too cute!"
The princess turned to the sorcerer, who seemed a bit lost. "Did you get all that?"
"Um, not quite… What happened?"
Wormwood sighed, lowering his head. "You're going to be a grandfather…"
Surprisingly, Cedric just chuckled. "I had a feeling it was coming…" He reached up and scratched his familiar's head, earning a contented sound from him. "I'm happy for you, Wormy."
The raven just smiled softly. "I'm happy for you too, Cedric."
After the festivities were over and the newlyweds got to thank everyone for coming, everybody departed for their own homelands. And while all the Enchancians were heading back to the castle, Cedric and Sofia made it clear that they wished to be alone…for the first time as husband and wife. Cordelia, ever the gracious sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, happily obliged their request by taking Nana and Tanya with her.
Back in the tower late that evening, Cedric used his wand to light some dim candles, which floated around the workshop and up the staircase. He watched as Sofia used her own wand to change from her wedding gown into a pure white night dress, which flowed around her ankles, with long loose sleeves falling over her fingers. The night dress fell off her shoulders a bit, the soft ribbons tied just below where her amulet rested. She then used the wand to change his wedding clothing into a simple loose white tunic and matching pajama pants. Afterward, she placed her wand on the worktable before doing the same with his.
"Dance with me," she whispered softly as she pulled him into an embrace, swaying with him as some soft music magically flowed into the tower, seemingly from nowhere.
"Always, my love," he murmured as he held her and danced slowly with her.
Just like the memories up and down the halls
In all our lessons and the royal balls
The castle echoes with yesteryear
And even still, I've got you here
Sofia reached up and grasped Cedric's hand as he pressed his lips to her fingers.
When I want a hand to hold
I cling to yours, and I don't let go
The moon filtered in from the upper window, illuminating the dancing couple.
I see you in the sunlight
I see you after midnight
I see you in the tower, the magic flowing free
Sofia hummed as she leaned up, pressing her lips to Cedric's, as he held her closer.
Oh, I see you in all my dreams
I see you in the moonbeams
I see a place in my heart
For you were meant for me
"I don't know…exactly…what we're supposed to do," Sofia whispered as she broke the kiss, her hands playing with the hair at the nape of his neck. "But…I know that I want to… I want to be with you, Cedric…"
He smiled at her, one finger tracing her collarbone as she shivered. "Come stay with me then..." He guided her out of the workshop and into his—their bedchambers.
I never imagined it would be this way
To hear your calming voice asking me to stay
I once was happy with just hugs from you
But this new path we're on opens more avenues
Cedric shut the door behind him before pulling Sofia into another hug, kissing her softly, still swaying with her to music only they could hear.
Pull me close in another dance
And this time let's really take a chance
Sofia gasped as he lifted his hand to her back, where there was a lower fall of the fabric, and he allowed his fingers to trail down her spine, sending chills throughout her body. "Cedric…"
I see you in the sunlight
I see you after midnight
I see you in the tower, the magic flowing free
His fingers were warm, an especially pleasant notion as the cooler air that always seemed to linger in the tower caressed her skin.
Oh, I see you in all my dreams
I see you in the moonbeams
I see a place in my heart
For you were meant for me
Sofia grasped his hands, gazing up at her husband with trusting, loving eyes. "Cedric…"
You're the best friend I have ever had
The one who guides me on my way
"Sofia…" He lifted his hand to her chin, brushing his lips over hers.
But there's more that we have not explored
Let's change that today
He gathered her into his arms and even lifted her up, smiling as she gasped in mild surprise then laughed, hugging him around his neck. He lowered her to the bed, watching her rest against the pillows, her breathing a little heavier than usual as he hovered over her, placing small kisses on her face. "My love…"
I see you in the sunlight
I see you after midnight
I see you in the tower, your magic flowing free
Cedric lifted his hand to her shoulder, surprised to see a trail of magic following his fingers as he lowered the sleeves a bit. He mentally shrugged it off as he leaned down, slowly kissing from her shoulder to her neck…
Oh, I see you in all my dreams
I see you in the moonbeams
I see a place in my heart
For you were meant for me
Sofia inhaled softly as he lifted his head, only to move his fingers to the ribbon holding the top of her night dress secure. "C-Cedric…"
Oh, I see you in the sunlight
I see you after midnight
I see you in the tower, our magic flowing free…
Her amulet began glowing softly, a light pink, as he paused in the attention that he was giving her.
Ooh…
"What does that mean?" he wondered as he traced the jewel with his fingers, bare from any gloves for once.
Sofia lifted her hands to his hair as she lowered his head to hers, their foreheads resting together. "It means…love… It means…show me…how to love you…completely."
Cedric smiled nervously at her. "I'm not…entirely sure I know how… But I think I've got the idea…."
"We'll figure it out together, Cedric." She kissed him once again as his hands gently caressed her.
And even the moon and stars hid their eyes behind the clouds, giving the loving couple their privacy as the two finally became one…at last…
I see you…
The end
