After her return from witness, and especially in the King of The Kids ep, Maggie seemed to be constantly snarky with Dash, rather unexpectedly. During a scene in the kitchen, we wondered if it was due to the writing, the directing, or the acting. The dialogue could, for the most part, have gone in a different direction, and so I decided to see if I could make it work if it was said in jest, not rebuke.
As always, I own nothing beyond the "what if" idea. Words in italics are pulled from the episode and belong to the producers and writers. The rest is mine and my crazy ponderings.
"Just give me five minutes alone with him, you said," Maggie's teasing words were quiet, meant for Dash's ears only, but still Dash jerked up and looked around to check that nobody heard. She knew something like this was coming from the minute Maggie had laid on the horn and interrupted the kiss Tim had sprung on her
"It's not like I planned it," Dash hissed, wondering how long it would take to live this down. It felt a little bit like karma, if she was honest about it. She'd given Maggie a hard time over PJ so often, she really did deserve to take a hit or two in return.
"You're in uniform, and if the boss saw you, he'd have your guts." Maggie reached behind Dash for the sugar as she laughed. Dash rolled her eyes at how much Maggie was enjoying having the upper hand for a change.
"I said I'm sorry," Dash started apologising, when a thought struck her. "I mean, it's not like you've ever been less than 100% circumspect while you are in uniform, right?" Maggie's blush told Dash all she needed to know. "All those closed doors and late nights, not to mention you were most definitely in uniform this morning when I walked into whatever that was in the kitchen…"
"This is not about me right now! You were on duty," Maggie almost hit the right note of her sergeant's voice, but Dash could tell she was rattled. Good. Dash was going to be traumatised for weeks after stumbling into the kitchen half awake in search of coffee, and instead finding Maggie pushed up again the bench, PJ kissing her senseless while sneaking a hand up under her jumper. It was only fair she could get a dig or two in.
"He caught me by surprise, ok? C'mon Mags, our little secret?"
"hmmm… I'm sure I could be persuaded to forget all about it, if you, say, spent the night at your mum's?" Maggie looked so hopeful, Dash couldn't help but laugh and agree.
"Ok, fine. You win. I've lost my earplugs anyway," she giggled, as Maggie swatted her arm and took the two coffees she's been making and headed into PJ's office, closing the door just a little more firmly than usual.
