I do not in any way own or claim to own any part of the Vampire Diaries.

If there was one think Elijah could go to his maker with, it was his devotion to his family. While most of his life was a nightmare of grim

mistakes and bloodshed, no one could deny that all of this he did for his family. It was with this thought that the noble man who had

too many ignoble needs to count kept himself sane most nights.

And It was with this mind that Elijah introduced himself to one Caroline Forbes. He knew with a startling certainty that if he could just make her see Nicklaus as he did, he could save his brother. Until now, Caroline Forbes was that distant green light shining out to his brother across a bay filled with a thousand years of blood and rage. If he could just be the bridge to that light for his brother…he would suffer any consequence, even the damnation of an innocent girl. So, he talked with her, he befriended her, he misled her. It didn't truly matter as long as she was led to believe that Klaus's darkness was something that could be contained or immersed by the simple outreach of her hand. And it worked. Of course, it worked. A thousand years of representing Nicklaus's best side made it an easy task to impress upon the compassionate baby vampire's heart the to need to save him.

And at first all was well. The first night Nicklaus burst into the house, perfume on his jacket, and his eyes dancing with the light of a thousand suns like they hadn't since he was a boy. Elijah thought, perhaps this could all be worth it in the end. Slowly but surely Caroline Forbes became an ever-present fixture in their lives, even accompanying them on their trips to New Orleans.

Nicklaus dazzled her. They gallivanted around Europe, danced until dawn, and the scent of champagne never left their breath. It was a courtship that rushed, rose, sank, and soured like the first Coney Island roller coasters.

It wasn't until the rain came that Elijah realized that everything had come crushing down around them. It was a random incident, Klaus's temper getting the best of him, something that had happened a thousand times before. A street full of innocents. He rushed to her as soon as he heard. He was far, far too late.

She stood out in the garden. The rain coming down in waterfalls around her. It splashed on the bright pink polish on her toes. Her dress was stained with pink and red, seeming to melt into her skin. The rain fell off her figure in heavy droplets, the blood that wasn't hers going with it. She stared towards him, but not at him. She didn't see anything, save her world crashing down around her. And with that, Elijah knew that his had too.

Hi everyone! It's been a long, long time since I've posted a story here, but I thought I would give it a shot. Please let me know what you think, and I look forward to posting more later!
