It was raining that night. A thunderstorm packed with lightning and all. Ayame Cadieux, a half French and Japanese girl whose parents immigrated to Canada, was running to the party hall. It was her friend, Diane's, birthday and it wouldn't do for her to be late. There was a flash of lightning, a rumble of thunder, and the last thing Ayame thought was, 'I am one unlucky girl.'

It was pouring that night, or so she was told. She was named Amaya, for the beautiful rain. Her kaa-chan, Keiko Nara, didn't tell her much of her birth, and Amaya didn't push. Her father had died just a few weeks before.

Amaya was a normal baby. When she was hungry, she cried. When she was thirsty, she cried. When she wet herself? She cried. That might make you think she was a sad baby, not a normal one, but she laughed, too. Every time she felt the sun and saw the clouds, she giggled. Quite odd for a child named after the rain, but it always brought a smile to Keiko's face.

The first time Amaya thought something was wrong with her, it was when she saw the Hokage Monument. To other shinobi– heck even to her there really wasn't anything special about it. There were three faces on it, one for each Hokage there ever was in the village. She had seen it multiple times in her short life of three years.

This time, however, she was assaulted with multiple mental images. They were adding faces upon faces to the mountain until she saw seven in the place of four. Her mind associated the faces of people she hadn't even met to names she hadn't heard of.

'The Shodaime is Senju Hashirama, the Nidaime is Senju Tobirama, the Sandaime is Sarutobi Hiruzen, the Yondaime is Namikaze Minato, the Godaime is Senju Tsunade, the Rokudaime is Hatake Kakashi, the Nanadaime is Uzumaki Naruto... But, how? I– I've only heard of Princess Tsunade! She's Lord Hashirama's granddaughter, and Lord Hiruzen's student... Uzushiogakure is the village with Uzumakis, so why would one ever become our Hokage anyway? I don't even kno–'

You know the feeling everyone talks about? The one where they say their life flashed before their eyes? Well, that's what happened to young Amaya. Except, it wasn't the short, playful moments of a three-year-old, but the moments of a sixteen-year-old.

The excitement Ayame Cadieux felt at the prospect of going to kindergarten, the sadness she felt when all the children ignored her, the glee the five-year-old her felt at meeting Diane Armstrong. All the knowledge she had, Amaya learnt. All the ups and downs of Ayame's life leading right up to her death, Amaya felt.

'Am I her? But... how? I– I don't understand. Kaa-chan always told me what was important. She told me that vegetables are good for you, and sweets are bad. She told me that I had a dad, but he isn't coming back, and that if I want to be a shinobi like Tou-san was I would make that happen to other people and that even if Tou-san did that to other people, he wasn't bad. B– But I can't tell Kaa-chan! Obaa-chan and Oji-chan said they saw Daddy when he wasn't there and they were dragged to the hospital. I don't want to go, but the pictures of the Hokage's aren't there! So... I can't tell anyone...'

It wasn't long before she decided she wanted to be a ninja, and so, at the tender age of five, she sealed her fate and joined the Academy. If the dreams were true, it was the only way she could find herself staying alive for what's to come, after all.

And maybe it was an affect of her memories, but little Amaya was never as expressive as she was during her first three years.
