Shield office; NYC

"Cap-Steve-are you sure about this?"

"I am Nick. It's the only way."

Nick fury looked down at the legendary cap shield atop his desk and sighed. Steven grant Rogers stood on the opposite side of his desk.

"May I ask why?" "It's complicated. But it's safe to say that shield is from another era." Fury nodded slowly. "Do you...have a successor in mind?" "No. That's of course up to you Nick. My advice? Retire it for good."

Fury ran a thoughtful hand over his goatee and then slowly sank into his chair. "History just lost its greatest soldier..." "that's just it Nick. I wanna keep serving. Just in my own way."

Fury brightened a little. He then leaned forward. "Would you still be willing to do your old duties?" "Yes of course. But on one condition." "Name it."

"I only fight for freedom now. No nations. No more corrupt systems. Just an eternal ideal."

"That's it?" Fury stood and gave cap his hand; to which cap shook to deal seal. "Consider it done cap." Pause "speaking of which... we'll need to give you a new name."

Cap frowned a little. "What did you have in mind?"

Now...

Captain Steve Rogers, now aliased as Nomad, was prone atop an old building in Hell's Kitchen and surveilling a Mexican cartel target. The now bearded first avenger and continuing sentinel of liberty now wore no uniform. He also used guns and any other weapon to carry out his new joint shield/avenger duties now. And in the past six months that he'd done his new world shocking role as nomad he'd been more like punisher in the discharge of his "superhero" duties.

But one thing was for sure; cap was a changed man. And there was no going back for him.

As for the Captain America role; it had been six months and no replacement had been chosen... the shield remained secured and part of history. Cap even recommended giving it back to the Wakandans. Fury was still considering it.

Way above my pay grade. The first super soldier currently was preparing a hit on the organized crime groups of the city as part of a shield black ops effort to make things safer. The war on cops was going strong and they needed all the help they could get. And enhanced warriors like cap would give it to them. Warriors with untied hands...

Whatever it takes. His mission/motto for Liberty's defense from its many enemies.

And he'd stack as many of the bastards' bodies as needed to get the job done.

He manned a sniper rifle of his own customized configuration. Punisher's known choices had inspired him. They had yet to meet since his becoming nomad. Cap had no intention of making it a competition. They were all on the same side as far as he could tell.

More trucks came in. More people traffickers. The cartels were smuggling illegals into the city. Many were military aged males; jihadists and gangsters were often embedded within them. Of course fake news said nothing about that; just as they said nothing about rising black on white violence and other things of importance to cap. Didn't need to. Cap knew the truth and would act on it regardless. Nomad was all about being controversial. Fine with me...

All were enemies of freedom; his enemies. And defeating freedom's enemies was what nomad was all about. Freedom alone was his nation; and he was soon about to prove how.
