A/N: So I had a friend request this story with the prompt 'Mr. Mom'. She didn't care which of my female OCs I used to make the story, but I thought Abby and Kelsey fit the best with it. Basically, Jess leaves for the day, leaving Sam in charge of his two girls. I chose Abby and Kelsey for this prompt for one main reason-Abby's attachment to her mother over Sam. I figured it would create just enough conflict to make a good story.
I am planning to write three more chapters to this story-one from Sam's point of view, one from Kelsey's, and one from Jess's. This first chapter is written from eighteen-month-old Abby's view. With that said, remember that Abby is eighteen months here. Sam, Kelsey, and Jess are not referred to by name, but as Daddy, Kessy, and Mommy. Some of the sentences are a little bit long. It's meant to be read in the way that a kid would probably think. Kelsey's will be written in a similar way, but will sound slightly different, as she's a couple of years older.
Hope everyone's doing well. Stay safe and healthy!
Even though she was only a baby, Abby could tell right away something was wrong.
Mommy was always there when she woke up. Always. Abby couldn't remember her ever not being there. So when she opened her eyes and there was no Mommy, Abby felt sick in her tummy. Something had to be wrong and she was scared.
But even though Abby was a baby, she wasn't a baby baby. She could be by herself for a minute. She could be brave. Reaching out a hand for Oscar, who was Abby's bestest friend in the whole wide world, Abby waited. And waited. And waited. And waited some more.
The sick feeling in her tummy got worse and worse and finally Abby couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't hear anyone or see anyone coming for her. Not Mommy, not Daddy, not Kessy. She was convinced she was all by herself and she couldn't be brave anymore. Oscar was holding her hand and she listened to what he told her to do.
Abby opened her mouth, let the tears flow, and screamed as loud as she could.
She could have called for Mommy or Daddy, but she didn't know which one was there. Or, the thought that really scared her, if anyone was there at all. It seemed like forever before she heard someone running up the stairs and opening the door to her room. It was Daddy, and he looked really, really sorry.
"Aww, what's wrong, Abby Gabby?"
Daddy always called her 'Abby Gabby' when she was upset. It did bring a smile to her face when she was mad, but she wasn't mad now. She was still scared. Where was Mommy? What had taken Daddy so long to come to her room? Daddy reached in and picked her up, rocking her a little and trying to sooth her.
"Shhh, it's okay. Why you crying so hard, huh?"
Finally, Abby had calmed enough to say what she really wanted. "Mama."
Daddy stopped rocking her and Abby noticed he looked a little sad. "Oh, Cupcake. Mama's gone today."
Abby stuck her lip out and started to cry again. Mommy couldn't be gone.
"Please don't cry, Cupcake. Daddy'll be here with you today. We'll have fun, I promise."
Abby didn't know if she wanted to believe Daddy, but at least now she wasn't alone anymore. "Kessy?"
"She's in the kitchen eating breakfast. You hungry?"
"Ossar."
Abby pointed forcefully at the crib. No matter how much she trusted Daddy, if Mommy wasn't there, Abby would not go anywhere without Oscar. No. Luckily, Daddy seemed to understand. He reached into the crib and handed Oscar to Abby.
"Here you go. You ready for breakfast?"
"Awfuls?"
Daddy smiled. "Sure. I'll make you a waffle."
One waffle, one diaper change, one video, and one Abby friendly game of tag in the yard with Daddy and Kessy later, Abby was feeling sick in her tummy again. Mommy still was gone. It felt like it had been days. Every car that drove by, Abby checked it. Every person that passed on the sidewalk, Abby stared at. Maybe if she stared at the person long enough, it would be Mommy.
Daddy brought Abby and Kessy inside to make lunch. He made Abby's favorite lunch, peanut butter on apple slices with apple juice, and Abby started to feel a little better. Maybe the day would end up being okay. When lunch was over, Daddy cleaned up and took something out of the refrigerator.
Suddenly, Abby's day got bad again. Daddy had pulled a bottle out of the refrigerator, and Abby knew what that meant.
Naptime.
Nope.
Abby pushed herself up and hid herself behind the couch. There was no way Daddy would find her now. She normally didn't fight naptime when Mommy was home, but Abby didn't want to go to sleep again and wake up to find Mommy not there. Abby could hear Daddy and Kessy talking in the kitchen, but she was too far away to hear exactly what they were talking about. Daddy sounded sad, and Abby wondered if he missed Mommy too. Suddenly, someone appeared behind Abby on the other end of the couch. Before she could start crying, Kessy was giving her a hug.
"Sissy? Why you hidin'?"
"Mama." Abby said sadly. Abby sometimes wished she could talk better, but Kessy seemed to understand exactly what she was saying, even when she couldn't say it exactly right. "Wan' Mama. No nap."
"Mommy's coming back."
"Her come back now?"
"She'll be back before we go to bed."
"Mama go bed?" Abby asked.
"She'll put us to bed tonight. She promised she would. And Mommy doesn't break promises, does she?"
Abby didn't exactly know what a promise was, but Kessy had said Mommy would be back before bedtime. Kessy never told her anything that wasn't true. So maybe she just had to wait a little more? But she still stood firm on one thing.
"No nap."
"Abby?"
Abby looked up and felt mad with herself. Daddy had found her hiding spot. Daddy knelt down and looked at her. He was still really big and tall, but it wasn't as hard to understand him when he knelt down to talk to her.
"I know you miss your Mommy. She's coming back, I promise."
"Where go?"
"She went to play with some friends." Daddy told her. "Like when you go to daycare and play with the other kids."
"Mama go pay?"
"Yeah. Mommy just went to play with friends. She'll be back tonight before it's time for you to go to bed."
Abby sniffed. So Mommy hadn't just left for no reason. She went to have some fun with her friends and would be coming back. Abby eyed the bottle still in Sam's hand. She felt a little better, but she was still determined about one thing.
"No nap."
"You don't have to take a nap, baby."
No nap? But Daddy was holding a bottle, and a bottle in the daytime always meant naptime. She pointed to the bottle.
"I'm changing your diaper, and then you do have to take your bottle. Kelsey's gonna read a book to me and you. What do you think?"
Abby smiled. "Kessy say 'tory?"
"Yeah. Kelesy'll tell us a story. What do you say?"
Abby forgot how scared she was. No nap and her sissy was reading a story? Abby could hardly wait. A few minutes later, she sat in Daddy's lap, holding her bottle and sucking on it while Kessy told them one of Abby's favorite stories. Despite her best efforts, before the end of Green Eggs and Ham, Abby was fast asleep.
When Abby opened her eyes again, she was still in Daddy's lap. Daddy was watching the TV, and when he looked down and saw Abby was awake, he smiled at her. Abby smiled back and snuggled into him, before she remembered.
Mommy.
Abby looked up at Daddy and asked hopefully, "Mama?"
Daddy frowned. "She's not back yet, baby."
"Nite nite?"
"She'll be back before nite nite time."
"Daddy wan' Mama too?"
"Yeah. Daddy misses Mommy too." Daddy took Abby's hand and kissed it. "I'm sorry you're sad and miss Mommy. I wish I could help."
Abby smiled, then grabbed Daddy's arm and hugged it tight. "Abby wub Daddy."
"Oh, Cupcake. You're gonna make Daddy cry." Daddy picked Abby up and hugged her close. "Daddy loves you too. So much."
"Daddy pay Abby?"
"Sure. I'll play with you."
Maybe Daddy wasn't so bad, Abby decided. He wasn't Mommy, but he did try to make Abby happy. He made her feel loved and safe. So, Abby decided, if Mommy had to be gone, like today, Abby would be okay with Daddy.
Kessy, who had been taking her own nap, woke up a few minutes later, and the three of them played tag again. This time, Abby paid attention to the game instead of all the people and did much better. She got away from Daddy and ran back to the steps of the house, where Daddy wasn't allowed to tag her. Kessy and Abby decided to work together against Daddy, and the game was over when Daddy caught them both. Once they all calmed down from laughing, Daddy said it was time to go back inside.
Daddy started making dinner, and Abby got an idea. She needed Kessy's help, and eventually Abby got her big crayons and some paper and set to work. Just before Daddy announced it was time for dinner, Abby checked her work. Just perfect. Kessy checked it over and approved. Daddy walked in.
"Alright, girls. Dinner's ready."
"Daddy, Abby has something to give you."
Abby took her picture and walked over. Daddy knelt down again and handed her picture over to Daddy. She'd worked hard on it, and really hoped that he'd like it.
"This looks great, Abby!" Daddy said, drawing a smile from Abby. "Can you tell me about it?"
Abby pointed to the left side of the picture, which, unknown to her, appeared as only red scribbles to Daddy. "Daddy."
"That's me?"
"Daddy." Abby repeated. She pointed to a smaller, bluish-purple scribble in the midst of the red scribbles. "Abby."
Daddy smiled again. "This is me and you."
"Daddy wike?"
Daddy kissed Abby's cheek and said, "I love it. Just like I love you."
The front door started to open then, and that's when it happened. The moment Abby had waited for all day long.
"MAMA!"
Mommy closed the door behind her and bent down to pick up the racing Abby. Abby beat Kessy and Daddy to the door. Daddy and Kelsey got their own hugs from Mommy, but Abby refused to let her go.
"Hi, my sweet girl! Did you have a good day here with Daddy?"
"It was a little rough at first, but I think we worked it out." Abby heard Daddy say.
"Mama. Daddy good." Abby said, finally letting go of her Mommy's neck.
"Daddy's good?" Mommy asked.
"Daddy good." Abby repeated. Her tummy growled and Abby looked down. "Abby hungy."
"Me too." Kessy said.
"Okay, girls. Let's go eat dinner and you can tell me all about your day here with Daddy."
Before Abby knew it, it was time for bed again. She didn't fight it this time, but there was one thing she wanted that was different from normal. Abby got a little scared when Mommy put her in the crib and Oscar wasn't there. Abby cried and cried, convinced her best friend was lost forever. Daddy searched the house and rescued him for her, and Abby made a decision. She'd seen Daddy rub Kessy's back sometimes until she went to sleep. Mommy usually did it for her if she wanted it, but not tonight. When Daddy leaned down to kiss Abby's forehead, like he did every night, Abby grabbed his cheek.
"Daddy 'tay."
"You want me to stay?"
"Daddy 'tay." Abby said with a yawn. "Mommy go Kessy."
"What?"
Abby felt a little frustrated, until she noticed Mommy smiling. "Daddy. I think she wants you to stay and rub her back until she goes to sleep, and for me to go to Kelsey."
"Yeah." Abby confirmed.
Abby went to sleep really fast, and just before she drifted off, she heard Daddy say, "I love you so much, Cupcake."
She was too sleepy to say it back, but Abby loved Daddy too.
