Here's the Percy Son of Triton work I mentioned a while ago, as those familiar with The Sea Seer may recall.
Hope you enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it!
(insert blanket disclaimer here)
Lady Amphitrite watched on in amusement as her eldest child zipped around the ocean pestering every water spirit in Atlantis and abroad into some agreement or other.
"Mother!"
"Oh, am I finally to be informed of your current obsession?"
He at least looked a bit apologetic under her raised brow. The crab legs in this hair clacking together in agitation.
"Yes… I'm sorry. I should have informed you sooner–"
"Well, out with it already."
"I've had a son!"
"A son?!" Well, he definitely should have said something sooner. At least now she could understand why he was rushing about like he was trying to out swim the end days.
"Yes! He's so tiny now! He looks so much like his mother too…" Her son continued to gush about his new offspring while bringing up a misted image of the baby. She couldn't help but coo at the little infant with his equally tiny dolphin toy and blue blanket.
Now it all made sense. Fluffy dark brown hair, ocean blue eyes, and an itty-bitty dimple already showing in his toothless grin. Such a sweet little sea treasure needed to be protected from all harm. She'd make sure to get her more curmudgeonly relatives onboard with the plan and inform her sisters of the new member of the family. Maybe she should pay a visit to Kym as well. It had been a few centuries after all.
Nothing would ever dare attempt to harm her grandson if she had anything to say about it.
As Queen of the Oceans and Proud Grandmother she had quite a lot to say on the matter in fact.
Percy's first few days in the Hermes' cabin were interesting to say the least. To start the cabin itself is painfully overcrowded and he had been sleeping on the floor in the sleeping bag, he's 99% sure Luke stole from the camp store, along with many of the other unclaimed kids. At this point Percy was willing to go and sleep in the woods if it meant not getting stepped on or accidently kicked at night.
Not to mention that so far, he wasn't doing too well in any of the demi-godly activities, besides sword fighting, in which he was apparently "passable" (Thanks Travis). He had only really excelled at canoeing on the lake, and somehow made friends with the naiads. Don't ask, Percy has no idea how he managed that. It's only been a day and Connor still won't stop bugging him about it.
Today everyone was being very suspicious. Like more than usual for the residents of the Hermes' cabin. They'd grin when he asked what was going on and leave his questions unanswered. So, when the cabin fell in for dinner, he was surprised to learn that they would be playing camp's version of capture the flag later.
Percy got bundled up in an oversized set of armor, handed a shield that made his arm want to just fall off so he wouldn't have to hold it anymore, and a sword that didn't feel at all balanced in his hands. Yeah, he was really looking forward to the game.
Percy figured he shouldn't be offended by Annabeth's reaction to his question about magic objects. But seriously, he looked nothing like the children of Hermes and even at Yancy no one had ever even insinuated that he could be to blame for stolen items. Fights and the underground market for candy, yes. Stealing, no.
So, he stood "guard" by their border on the creek and waited for the Ares cabin to march up and pulverize him like Clarisse had promised. He knew he was bait. Annabeth had said as much when walking him around his first conscious day at camp. His sorry ass would distract the red team as their main fighters focused on humiliating him in revenge for the toilet incident. Percy had already explained to basically everyone in camp by now that he had no idea how the school of guppies had swum their way up the pipes to attack Clarisse's face. It just happened.
Even knowing what was probably going to happen wasn't enough to prepare him to face five Ares campers above his weight class. Though briefly distracted by monster noises from the forest, his instincts when faced with far more experienced warriors kicked in and he did probably the dumbest thing ever in his split second decision that he'd rather face Clarisse than whatever was lurking further in the brush.
He was just about to get beat up by the group after knocking one of the guys out with his discarded shield (Shield frisbees. He'd have to remember that for the future.) when some of the trees around the creek's bank sprouted women who started pelting the Ares kids with stones and pinecones. One of them was ever shouting some very interesting threats in Greek. Something about filling their bunks with mud…
This went on until Clarisse and her half-siblings retreated when Luke crossed the creek winning the game for the Blue team. Clarisse glared at him as she grumbled away to the rest of her team and made an 'I'm watching you' gesture.
Annabeth appeared out of nowhere which he guessed probably had something to do with her magic item (A Yankees cap. Sure why not?). Percy didn't even bother being mad at her. Setting him up for failure was just part of her plan for the larger win. He did ask the dryad who had been shouting threats at the Ares campers why they had come out to help him. She was about to answer when the monster he heard earlier made itself known in incredibly dramatic fashion, in Percy's opinion at least. What followed was somehow the least fun thing to happen to him that day.
Percy, of course, got knocked into the creek with a 300 pound hellhound on his chest. Luckily, it was killed before it could do more than ruin his loaner chest plate. He really hoped they weren't expecting him to pay for the damages.
It was around at this point as he was giving a long sigh of relief at his continued survival that he realized everyone else was staring at him. Well, not at him exactly. Technically just a little above him. There hanging above his head was a glowing, ocean blue conch shell.
"Okay. I have no idea whose symbol that is." Travis broke the silence.
Chiron shot him a disapproving look at which he hid behind Luke, still holding the Red Team's liberated flag.
"All hail Percy Jackson, Son of Triton!"
Chiron and the Dryads bowed while the rest of the campers kind of looked around in confusion before shrugging and doing the same. A few of the claimed kids in Hermes cabin gave him weak smiles and a solid one thumbs up.
"Does this mean I don't have to blow the conch for meals anymore?" One of the Apollo kids whispered to answering hisses to shut up.
Great.
After his claiming Percy's life didn't change all that much. He now had some extra lessons from the other children of minor gods and like that Apollo camper had predicted he now had the dubious honor of blowing the conch, for what was basically a time warning and call to meals.
He was still sleeping on the floor of Hermes cabin. There wasn't enough room to give him an actual bunk even though he had been claimed and there to stay, but Conner assured him that most of the campers would clear out for the school year and there would be more space.
On the plus side he now had an extra activity with Malcolm, one of Annabeth's brothers, who had an interest in Atlantis and had been trying to gather any information he could find to prove its existence. Though Percy wasn't sure any of Malcolm's theories were right he was happy to hear any information the other could dig up about his dad and extended immortal family. When Malcolm told him the story of how his grandparents got married, the two laughed for the rest of the class session about the sea deities getting together with the aid of their dolphin wingman.
Everyone had mostly let the whole attacked by a hellhound go as some weird grudge the lord of the Underworld had with his dad that no one knew about, or more likely something with his grandfather on the immortal side and trying to get at his brother through Percy, the unfortunate grandson.
Percy only got to enjoy this new schedule for almost a week before he got called to the Big House. Luke went with him and Grover, who had delivered the summons.
Percy wasn't sure what was happening with Luke. After his claiming he kept looking at Percy worriedly, like he'd turn around and find Percy had turned into a ghost or something. He had even drilled him a lot harder during training, and when asked about it he put it down as a "feeling" and everyone let it go because watching Percy get his ass handed to him every class was great entertainment for the rest of them who didn't have to go one-on-one with the best sword fighter in camp. Connor and Travis even set up a betting pool at one point with the help of Chris, one of the unclaimed guys who was a couple years older than Percy. When Luke heard about it, he bet on himself and how long it would take him to beat Percy and then made sure he got all his drachmas back and then some. Everyone decided that it wasn't as fun if they already knew what was going to happen and stopped betting on Percy's training.
Luke was looking pretty concerned as he led the way to the Big House where Chiron and Mr. D were sitting on the porch and playing some card game.
After Mr. D left following his threat to turn him into a dolphin, which honestly didn't sound like such an awful life to Percy, Chiron explained the quest option. Luke had started looking really angry around the same time Percy got threatened with dolphin-hood and his expression had only gotten more severe as Chiron suggested a quest. Percy didn't understand how anyone could think he was the one who stole Zeus' bolt when he wasn't even aware of the gods until less than a month ago. Weren't the gods supposed to be omnipotent or something?
Unfortunately, it didn't look like there were any other real choices. Especially when the sky decided to open up and down pour on camp. Percy had learned the first day that camp has protective magical borders that affectively climate controlled the area. The King of the gods was punishing all of camp because he blamed Percy for something his grandfather – who he had never met – almost certainly didn't do, and that most of the other gods agreed wasn't the sort of thing that Poseidon would do.
So, Percy found himself hearing a prophesy from the oracle-mummy and trying not to lose his lunch to the horrible smells that pervaded the attic. He got two quest mates in the form of Grover, who still wanted his license to find Pan, and Annabeth who had apparently been stalking them to be on the quest. They were all there for their own reasons. The biggest motivator for Percy personally accepting the quest was definitely to get the chance to maybe save his mom, and since that was unlikely, at least give Hades a piece of his mind for sending monsters after him and indirectly killing his mom. Percy couldn't say that he was at all confident in their ability to survive or even complete the quest. The oracle as good as said that they would succeed but that didn't mean that everything would work out. The last two lines of his prophesy would be haunting him until they resolved themselves.
The next morning found Percy and the other questers gathered on Half-Blood Hill with the Athena and Hermes cabin giving them a proper send off and Conner promising to give him a good eulogy at his funeral. His faith in Percy's survival was truly admirable.
Luke gave them his flying shoes. But with Zeus out to kill him Percy wouldn't get to personally enjoy their epic-ness.
He also got a disguisable sword that was a shark tooth necklace most of the time, so at least he wouldn't be setting out weaponless.
Then the three of them all piled into the camp van and Argus drove them into New York to get a bus going west.
