Curristan's fingers danced around the console as she tried to control the TARDIS through the vortex. She had suddenly had an idea to go to Cardiff of all places. She did know that there was a time-space rift there and she had a feeling that the TARDIS wanted her to go.
'I have no idea why you want me to go there but it must be very important if you are insisting that I do. I am sure that I will find out why when we get there.'
A low soothing hum from the TARDIS answered her thought.
Out loud Curristan replied, "Well let us see what will we will find."
The TARDIS faded into existence in Roald Dahl Plass, as usual totally unnoticed by the passing shoppers and tourists, the Chameleon Circuit choosing a non-descript closed information booth.
Exiting Curristan walked a short distance away and then reached out with her senses. For some reason, she had the thought before leaving the TARDIS to wear a perception filter which she had completed on Trenzalore.
She could feel a familiar presence in her mind but it seemed like it was distant. In her opinion, the only person it could be was the Doctor, which wasn't her problem as any threat he could deal with for all she cared.
After several minutes of walking, she realised that she was being followed by someone who felt...really offputting. Like he was totally wrong. He seemed to be wearing a WWII jacket and had black hair with angular facial features. Turning round Curristan addressed him directly.
"Hello I could tell you were following me, could you tell me who you are? Also, can you stay right there."
The man laughed and nodded before speaking in an American accent. "Figures you knew that. Captain Jack Harkness. I know you aren't the Doctor, then who are you?"
"Ahh, I am Curristan, a fellow Time Lord and a friend of the Doctor too."
That brought a surprised look to his face. "I thought he was the only one still alive."
"Well there are at least four still alive but he doesn't know about two of them, ironically the two most closest to him..."
"Ahhh some juicy gossip...tell me more."
"I shouldn't really as it is something he needs to know himself, but at the moment I haven't been able to find the time and place to tell him. The last couple times we met there were more pressing circumstances."
"Aww you are a spoilsport...anyway what are you doing here?"
"Well, it's been a whim really. But the rift is kinda why I came here. My TARDIS will get some power from being near it and I get to have a rest from running around the universe."
Nodding Jack grinned and decided to change the topic. "Well, I work for an organisation called Torchwood, which deal with alien threats and separate them from the government. Would you like to come and see?"
Curristan had heard some scraps about Torchwood from previous visits and a mention of them from the Doctor. But she wouldn't say that out loud. "Sure why not, I might be able to help with any tech you have found."
"I thought you would be interested. Follow me."
Turning around Jack made off in a direction with Curristan following.
Arriving at the Torchwood Hub Curristan was introduced to Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato. They were bemused at her sudden arrival but Jack led them into a side room to explain things. Meanwhile, Curristan was left to her own devices, so she began to peruse the alien technology that seemed to be laying everywhere.
Picking an oval object up Curristan looked closely. 'Hmm, this is an Orvian scanner capsule...this must of come through the rift...'
Her musing was broken as Jack returned and spoke. "Enjoying the alien tech Curristan?"
Looking around Curristan grinned widely. "Yes, I am. I take it that all of the alien technology you get comes through the rift?"
Jack nodded. "Yeah, that's right. It is usually random flotsam but sometimes something interesting comes through. By the way, if there is anything you see you are welcome to take it. I know you will be able to utilise it better than us. The Doctor has never come here so you can have the pick of anything you see."
"That's nice of you. I will definitely have a look at what you have and see if anything is worth taking. Is it okay though if I go and get my TARDIS and bring it here? I still haven't got round of making a remote control that I could use to summon it."
Jack chuckled and made an unbothered gesture with his right hand. "Sure, do and get it. I hope you are a better pilot than the Doctor as landing here will be a squeeze."
"I am not sure about that but I am sure the TARDIS will help me."
Making her way back to the TARDIS, Curristan was deep in thought. The meeting with Torchwood had been interesting and she knew that she now had an opportunity to help out and also have some personal gain too. Some days were definitely sweeter than others.
Arriving back at the TARDIS she quickly got inside and set the coordinates for takeoff, using the location of the alien technology to home in. Within a minute the TARDIS had materialised inside the Torchwood Hub in front of the astonished Torchwood team, apart from Jack who was grinning from ear to ear.
"Looks like the Chameleon Circuit works eh Curristan," Jack remarked as Curristan exited the TARDIS still looking like the information kiosk.
"Yes, this is a Type Seventy so a much more modern TARDIS than the Doctor's Type Fourty."
Laughing Jack turned to the still stunned others. "Don't stare at our guest team..." he chastised, bringing them out of their reverie. "So, we will continue our work and you keep looking. Right team back to work, let's leave Curristan to see what she likes.." Winking Jack walked back into his office as the others went back to what they were doing.
Turning to where she could see some things to look at Curristan nodded. 'Let's see what we can find."
