Admiral's log. Date: August 20th, 2015.
It has been two months. Two months since the victory at Midway. Hopes were high the victory would swing the tide of war in the Pacific in our favor. It didn't. The Abyssals launched a full offensive three days after the battle. The entire South Pacific, save for New Zeeland, has fallen into their hands. They have invaded Indochina, India, and China. The JMSDF is fighting tooth and nail for Okinawa. The British fleet in the Indiana ocean is holding the Abyssals fleets at bay, for now.
The situation in the Atlantic and Europe has gotten worse. Convoys are under almost nonstop assault by Abyssal submarines and surface raiders. We have received reports that both Norway and Sweden have fallen to the Abyssals and both Finland and Demark have been invaded.
Now, on to the good news. The Italians, with help from the French, have driven the Abyssals from the Mediterranean. Now, their navy is assisting in the Battle of the Atlantic. The other bit of good news is that no Abyssals have been spotted beyond the Hawaiian islands nor have they tried to rebuild their base on Midway. From what the after-action reports stated, there's not much left of Midway to build on.
Now, I have only one question: When will we begin our counter-attack?
Standing at the edge of a summoning pool, Rear Admiral Smith watches as the summoning begins. He knows that it may not be successful and that he doesn't have to attend the summoning but he has found that summonings seem to succeed more often when a flag officer is near the pool. It has yet to be proven if a flag officer being present during a summoning actually affects it.
As the summoning comes to an end a bright light appears at the bottom of the pool. It rapidly grows until there is a huge splash of water! Smith had backed off so he wouldn't be soaked and when the water clears a woman is standing in the middle of the pool. He smiled, 'Another successful summoning.'
He took in her appearance. Her skin is a bronze color and her hair color is black with silver streaks in it. Around her neck, she wears a blue choker necklace with a small gold gem embedded in it. She wears a shirt that ends just above her navel and reveals the tops of her large breasts. Directly under her large breasts is her name and hull number. A pair of tight-fitting short shorts finishes her outfit.
She opened her eyes. She looked around the room before her gaze settled on Smith. Her eyes drifted to the markings on his uniform and she snapped to attention. "Sir! USS Indiana! BB-58! Reporting for duty!"
He saluted her back, "At ease Indiana. It's good to have you back."
"It's good to be back sir," she looked over herself, "Although, I don't remember looking like this. I do like the change though."
"Good to hear." The door behind him opened. "I see the summoning was a success."
"It was Vestal. Can you lead Indiana to her quarters?"
"Of course sir. Indiana, follow me please."
She nodded and followed Vestal out of the summoning room. Vestal opened the door and the light caused Indiana to blink rapidly. When her eyes had adjusted, she looked at her surroundings. Directly across from her is a four-story building. Closer to her left is a two-story building that is connected to the other building. She can see the corner of a third building that is hidden behind the first.
Vestal lead her down a path and turned right taking them behind the building they just left. Four more buildings are in front of her and they're all connected. She can see two more buildings behind them. In the distance, she can see the peaks of mountains covered in green by the trees. "Vestal, where are we?"
"California. We're about one hundred miles North-West of Sacramento."
"That's good to know. Vestal, why was I... summoned?"
She stopped and turned to face her. "We are at war, Indiana. That's why we have been summoned."
"At war? With who? The japs? The Germans? The Italians?"
"No. We're not at war with any of them. We're actually allies with them."
"Allies?"
"Yes. A lot has changed in the past seventy years."
"Seventy years!? Damn! Sounds like I have a lot of catching up to do. So if we're not at war with them, who are we at war with?"
"They call themselves the Abyssals. The whole world has been at war with them for the past ten months."
Indiana cracked her knuckles, "Point me to them Vestal. I'll crack their fucking hulls in two!"
"Hell yeah!"
"That's what I want to hear!"
"We'll break their backs with our torpedoes!"
"Get in line sis!"
Vestal smiled, "I admire your enthusiasm, but, you'll have to wait."
Indiana growled, "Fine. Where are you taking me anyway?"
"The barracks. Kanmusu and regular base personal have separate barracks. Ours is on this side of the base while theirs is on the other side."
Indiana nodded. "What about the buildings in front of the one we just left?"
"The building we just left is the summoning building. The ones directly in front of it are the main offices for the base. There are two mess halls. One of this side of the base for us and one on the other side for base personal."
"Most important buildings of any base."
"Indeed."
"...Vestal. Have any of my sisters been summoned?"
"South Dakota has but, she's stationed on the East Coast."
She pushed the doors open to the Kanmusu barracks and Indiana followed her in. Two hallways are separated by a thick wall. The left hall has a sign above it saying 'barracks' while the right hall has three signs saying 'mess', 'repair baths' and 'rec room.'
"Hey, Vestal!" A cruiser-type Kanmusu walked out from the right hall. The first thing Indiana noticed is the marks on her hull. It looked like her repairs hadn't been completed something Vestal also noticed. "Your repairs aren't complete, Salt Lake City."
She froze and nervously laughed. "Yeah, yeah I know. But it's just a few small marks and dings on my hull! Nothing serious!"
Vestal stared her down and she got more and more nervous to the point that a few drops of sweat started running down her forehead. Vestal sighed, "Alright, I'll let it go. Can you take Indiana to her quarters? I need to meet with Tennessee."
She smiled and gave a thumbs up. "Sure!"
Vestal nodded, "Thank you." She walked out of the building and Salt Lake breathed a sigh of relief. "So, your name is Indiana. Second of the South Dakotas right?"
"Yep! And you're Salt Lake City. Second of the Pensacola-class."
"Correct! It's just me and my big sister Pensacola." She seemed to get lost in a memory and Indiana looked her over. Her skin is white and her short hair is an Orange-red color. Covering her breasts is not a shirt but a single piece of clothing that leaves all of her toned stomach exposed. She wears a pair of skin-tight shorts, if you can even call them that, and leggings that reach her thighs.
"Oh! Call me Salt Lake. Way easier to say than my full name."
"Alright, it's nice to meet you Salt Lake."
"You to Indiana. Come on, I'll show you your quarters."
She followed her down the hall and turned right after they passed three other hallways. They stopped at the sixth door on the right and Salt Lake opened the door before waving Indiana inside. She stepped inside and looked around the room. It's very sparse with gray walls and six beds with small nightstands beside them. On both sides of the room are doors, she checked both of them finding a bathroom and closest. There is one window that allows sunlight to enter.
"It's not much. Damn, I actually forgot how sparse these rooms were. You have this room to yourself for now but don't be surprised if you have a roommate sooner rather than later."
Indiana nodded, "I can work with this. So, Salt Lake, how long have you been here?"
"I've been at this base for a month but I was summoned six months ago. I have quite a bit of combat experience; I might have the most experience on this base actually."
Indiana nodded, "What can you tell me about the Abyssals."
She breathed out, "The Abyssals. Well, they're tough bastards to kill and they can dish out a lot of damage. However, they are weaker than us. In a one-on-one engagement, I could beat a heavy cruiser type and you could beat a battleship type."
"They have two command types: Demons and Princesses. Now, I've never seen or fought a Princess but I've fought my share of Demons. They are a cut above the rest and the only ones who can challenge us one-on-one. They're not in every fleet though; most of the battles I've fought in have only had standard types or mass-produced types or fodder types however you want to call'em."
"Thanks for the info Salt Lake."
"No problem."
Indiana's stomach growled; she looked down at it with confusion.
Salt Lake laughed, "Sounds like you're hungry."
"Hungry? Is that why my cooks are yelling at me?"
"Probably. Let's go get lunch."
She stepped back into the hall and turned left instead of right. "Most of us have already eaten so the mess shouldn't be packed." She turned right and then turned left at an intersection. At the end of the hallway is a double door and written above it is 'mess.' Salt Lake pushed the doors open in a rather dramatic fashion and stepped inside with Indiana behind her.
It's a large room with a dozen tables in total that take up most of the room. She can see six Kanmusu sitting at two of the tables. There are large windows in front of them that allow sunlight to fill the room and they give a beautiful view out across the ocean. Directly to their right is a kitchen area. Nobody is currently cooking but plenty of food is laid out. Salt Lake grabbed a plate and went down the line grabbing whatever she wanted. Indiana did the same and one of the Kanmusu, a light cruiser, waved them over.
"Good to see ya Salt Lake! I thought you'd be in the baths for another day."
"My DC teams are the best. Of course they would get me out early."
"Did Vestal give you a hard time about that?"
"Nearly. Luckily, she seemed to be in a good mood today. That and she needed to go see Tennessee about something."
"You got lucky Salt Lake, very lucky. Who's your friend?"
"I'm Indiana."
"Nashville."
"So, Nashville, what have you been doing while I've been repairing?"
"Not much. I took more damage than I thought and only finished my repairs yesterday."
Salt Lake nodded, "Is the rest of the squadron alright?"
"Yeah. Dewey and Aylwin will be in the baths for another day though."
"Better than the alternative."
"Yeah. Hell of a lot better."
Their conversation died down as they ate. "So, Indiana, were you summoned recently?"
"Very. Like, ten minutes ago."
"Really? Has Anyone filled you in?"
"Vestal told me who we're fighting against and that we're allies with the Japanese, Germans, and Italians."
"Bet that was a shock huh."
"It was. Can't believe it's been seventy years."
"Trust me, everyone here was just as shocked as you were. Even if they deny it." She looked at Salt Lake but she was too busy eating to notice. "Tell you what, after we eat we can head to my room and I'll fill you in on some more stuff."
"Sounds good."
