"Two car accident Hampton Blvd." Miller heard coming through the walkie.

"Warren. It's a car accident not to far from us."

"We don't have all the necessary supplies we just got off a call." Ben informed him cleaning up the back of the ambulance.

"We could probably help until an aid car and engine arrive." Dean said shrugging his shoulders and Ben nodded.

"Aid car 195. Responding send another aid car and how far is the engine out?" Miller asked.

"Engine is 10 minutes out."

Miller and Ben arrived at the scene and looked around; the car accident looked bad. The two men split up going to each car.

"Hey what's your name?" Ben asked staring at the beautiful woman. She was absolutely stunning even with the smeared blood on her face.

"I'm Miranda, Dr. Miranda Bailey, Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. There is glass from the window shield in my abdomen, it's in there deep, I'm sure it's penetrating my spleen and liver and its keeping me from bleeding out. My leg is pinned as well. I'm bradycardic I have been counting it an I'm at 40 beats per minute."

Ben frowned hearing that information. He knew that meant that everything was slowing down. Which wasn't a good sign.

"You should really work on your facial expressions. How long have you been on the job and for starters what's your name?" Miranda questioned coughing.

Ben smiled at the beautiful woman who was captivating.

"I'm sorry. I'm Dr. Benjamin Warren firefighter at 19. "He informed her. "I have been doing this job for 4 years now.

"Okay great Dr. Warren. Now start over again. I have never been in a car accident before and you didn't do the whole spill."

"Miranda, my name is Ben. I'm a surgeon/ firefighter you've been in an accident. We are getting you out now; but you need to stay still and listen to what I tell you." Ben said seriously.

Miranda laughed loudly. "That's what I wanted, thanks Ben."

"No problem Miranda."

"Okay I'm going to open your back door and get in to get this neck brace on you." Ben informed before doing what he told her. Ben slid her head up slightly, putting it on making sure it was secure.

"You said you were a surgeon, what kind?" Miranda asked.

"I'm a general surgeon." Ben responded coming around to face her again.

"Really, what made you do a career switch?"

"I wanted to do something with all the adrenaline, so firefighting. But it isn't my first career switch." He told her and watched her face contort.

"It isn't? What did you do before surgery?"

"I was an anesthesiologist." Ben smiled.

"You're not married and you are single." Miranda stated making an assumption.

"How did you know?" Ben asked hooking up and Iv in her arm.

"Because you would drive them crazy with your career changes. You sound like a man with commitment issues."

"I don't have commitment issues and I just haven't found the one yet."

"You will find her." Miranda said assuredly.

"How do you know?" Ben asked.

"I just know, and I'm always right about everything." Miranda laughed.

"Is that so?"

"Yep." She responded popping the P.

"What about you Miranda, I don't see a ring on your finger." Ben said peering at her left hand.

"I'm divorced." Miranda said nonchalantly.

"And single." Ben said hopefully.

"And single." she confirmed. "Why did you sound hopeful?"

"No reason." Ben said sheepishly. Now wasn't the time to try and pursue her. "Miranda, I have you hooked up to ECG to monitor your stats. While we wait on the engine and the second rig.

"Okay Ben." Miranda said sleepily.

"Hey don't fall asleep." Ben told her seriously.

"I'm tired Ben and in pain." She responded.

"I know but stay up for me. How about you tell me things about yourself." He instructed.

"Okay let's see, I'm 39 and a Virgo. I'm from Baltimore Maryland. I graduated from Wellesley. I moved out here to Seattle for my internship at Seattle grace at the time. I was married had a son. Who is 14 now. I became Chief of General surgery, then years later I'm now Chief of surgery."

Wow." Ben said clapping and Miranda squinted her eyes at him.

"You're are a very hardworking woman. What is your goal now?"

"What do you mean?" Miranda questioned. "I mean what's next you did all of that,so now what ?"

"Mmmhm I never thought about it. I worked my entire life to get where I am now. Now that I'm here I don't know what's next. Maybe I will event something... oooh I always wanted to cure fistulas." Miranda smiled.

"You can do it. I know you will." Ben encouraged.

"I like your confidence."

"Tell me what happened." He asked trying to think of things to get her to talk.

"There was an all hands-on deck 7 car accident, which is probably why it's taking so long to get and engine and a rig." She told him. I was on my way to work and that driver was weaving through lanes speeding. He had almost hit other cars and pedestrians. When he flew into the other lane, he almost hit a car, but he tried to avoid it turning his car while he was in full speed. That's when I saw him. I tried to break but it was too late, so I braced myself for the collision.

"I'm sorry Miranda." Ben said grabbing her hand.

"It's okay. It's not your fault. Everything happens for a reason."

"Run me down the stats."

"I'm feeling weaker, it hurts when I breathe, but on the bright side I can still feel my toes in my right leg so that's good."

"That's great." Ben confirmed blowing out a breath.

"Excuse me one second." Ben told Miranda

"I would nod but I can't." She chuckled.

Ben walked over the aid car talking into the walkie. How far is that second aid car and engine. I need power tools." Ben rushed.

"We are 15 minutes out and we have to push through traffic. How are they doing?"

"The woman is not doing so good her stats are dropping and I'm not sure on the other driver Miller's with him."

"Okay, were pushing it."

Ben put up the radio and walked back over to Miranda.

"Ben I need to call my son. Can you get me my phone." She asked. Ben could tell what she was asking really and it was breaking his heart. She wanted to say her last words just in case.

"Miranda that is not necessary. You are going to be fine." Ben said soothingly.

"Don't play God Benjamin."

"I'm not playing him. I'm telling you what I know. "

After a few moments of silence. Ben spoke "Do you believe in love at first sight."

Miranda smiled weakly. "I don't know I'm not really a romantic. Do you?" She questioned.

"Oh yeah." He chuckled. "Big on romance."

"How do you know your romantic. Did a woman ever tell you that?" She countered.

"Actually quite a few."

"Cocky." She sneered.

"Does not being a romantic have something to do with your ex-husband."

"Since were in this situation. I'll answer truthfully. Yes it does. He was the only man I had ever been with sexually and relationship wise period. And he-

"Still ?" Ben cut her off in disbelief

"Still what?"

Ben didn't answer and gave her a look.

"Ohhh, God no." Miranda chuckled. "But anyways he cheated." Miranda took in Ben's face as best she could. His jaw was clinched and he look genuinely pissed off.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

"It's just I can't imagine anyone stepping out on you. You are literally the most beautiful woman I have laid eyes on. You're a surgeon, chief of surgery in fact. You're the full package."

"Thank you." Miranda smiled closing her eyes.

"It's no problem. I mean it."

"Ironically I know you do."

"Okay good.

"Well tell me something about you Benjamin."

"What more do you want to know?"

"Ummmm. You said you are single, but you didn't mention any kids. Do you have any?"

"No I don't and I guess I'm a little behind or a little too late."

"Never too late you can find some young girl and settle down and have a baby."

"I don't want a young girl. I like woman my age." Ben responded swiftly.

Ben jumped when Miranda groaned out in pain.

"Tell me what's wrong."

"The adrenaline is wearing off. I can feel everything." She groaned.

"Okay let me think." Ben said pacing. He opened the door and looked at the metal piece of the car holding her leg in place. He needed a saw blade.

"I'm going to get you out of here. I promise."

"Hey you're a first responder and in the medical field you know better than anyone don't make promises you can't keep." Miranda whispered out.

"Miranda, I promise that I am going to get you out of here alive." Ben said caressing her face.

Miranda listened and for some odd reason she actually believed him.

"Tell me you agree with me." Ben demanded.

"I believe you Ben warren. You are going to get me out of here."

The monitor beeped causing Ben to look towards it.

"What is it?" Miranda asked sadly.

"It's nothing." Ben said trying not to worry her.

"Don't lie to me what's my stats?" She asked huffing.

"Everything is low. Dangerously low. I want to move you myself but I'm afraid it will do more damage than good. Especially with that glass being held in place." Ben murmured.

Miranda didn't answer she honestly was tired and she was only staying up for him. And maybe the fact that she was scared if she did fall asleep she wouldn't wake up.

She watched as Ben walked over to the truck bringing another Iv bag and portable oxygen machine.

He hooked everything up once again and put the oxygen in her nose.

"I need to umm call my son or leave a voice message." Miranda pleaded.

Ben looked towards her and then granted her request. He handed Miranda her phone and she scrolled looking for the number. He watched as she took deep breaths trying to calm herself before talking.

"Hey my favorite boy , this is your mom. Well I guess you already know that. I just wanted to say that I am so proud of you and I love you so much , more than you will ever know. You are an amazing person and son. Um okay have a great day and see you soon." Miranda finished before choking up on her tears.

"Hey hey. Don't cry. It's going to be okay. Let me see those beautiful brown eyes so I know that you are hearing me."

Miranda looked up into his eyes and she gasped. She didn't know him but his eyes held a look of love, affection, adoration and assurance in them.

"Warren I need you over here. He's going into cardiac arrest." Dean yelled.

Ben clicked his teeth before looking back into Miranda's eyes. He honestly could care less what happened to the man.

"You took and oath." Miranda said sternly reminding him.

"Okay but be here when I get back." Ben told her seriously.

"Where am I going Ben?" Miranda asked playfully.

"Miranda you know what I mean." Ben responded furrowing his brows.

"I know what you mean. I will be up and alert when you get back. Go save that idiot." She smiled sweetly closing her eyes.

Ben jogged over and helped the driver starting compressions.

"Get the defibrillator." Ben yelled out to Miller.

"Charging to 250." Miller yelled before shocking him.

"Still no pulse, again." Ben informed.

"Charging to 300."

"Shit." Ben snapped.

"Charging to 350." Miller did once again, but still got no pulse.

"Damn it... he's gone... time of death 4:05." Ben said standing wiping his face.

He watched as Dean got a sheet and covered the man up. Ben was jogging over to Miranda her eyes were closed and he didn't see movement from the door of her car. He panicked as his feet moved faster. If she was gone , he would never forgive himself.

"Miranda... Miranda ! " Ben shouted running to her.

Ben tapped her face lightly calling her name. He watched as her eyes fluttered open.

"I'm up, I was just resting my eyelids." Miranda said before falling back asleep.

"Miranda don't fall back to sleep." He whispered to her tapping her again.

Miranda opened her eyes once again staring into his.

"You lied to me Miranda. Don't do that again. Don't scare me like that again. " Ben said with relief and sadness.

"I'm sorry, but to be fair. I normally need coffee to stay up. "She joked.

All of a sudden Ben smelled gas. His eyes traveled from the bottom of her car to the front and he saw the leak.

"Shit." Ben mumbled wiping his face.

"Miller." He called out.

Dean jogged over and stood by him. "Get the fire extinguisher off the aid car. There's a gas leak. That fire extinguisher its not going to be enough. Put the traffic at use and find people or trucks that carry one. Do it quickly it's not that much time." Ben instructed.

"Miranda I'm going to be right back and I'm getting you out of here this time." Ben said turning his head looking at a construction truck.

Ben ran to the truck. "Excuse me sir. I need your power tools."

"Yeah sure, get whatever you need they're in the back."

Ben grabbed a reciprocating saw, and the fire extinguisher he saw.

As Ben jogged back he saw Miller jogging back with 4 fire extinguishers as well.

"Ben." Miranda mumbled.

"Hey, I'm right here."

"I smell gas." She informed him wearily.

"I know we are taking care of it." He told her seriously.

Dean open the hood of her car and sprayed it down. With 2 of the fire extinguishers. And then under where the gas leak was and Ben sprayed the trail too.

"Get the stretcher and a tourniquet." Ben ordered out.

"Alright Miranda I'm going to remove this off your leg. By cutting into the car with a power tool. Let me know if something hurts other than your ears."

"Will do."

Ben began cutting into the car being mindful of the sparks flying and Miranda's leg. He cut more and more until it was no more left. Ben freed her leg and sat the tool down.

"Can you still feel your toes?" He questioned.

"Yes all five of them." She whispered.

Ben took the tourniquet and tied it tightly around the wound that was now bleeding from her leg.

"Okay Miranda this is it we are going to move you carefully." Ben told her removing her seat belt.

Miller came around and grabbed her legs and Ben grabbed from the sides of her breast not wanting to touch her rib cage where the glass was.

"1...2...3" Miller ordered before they lifted her up.

The two men got her on the stretcher and carried her to the ambulance getting her strapped to the gurney.

Ben heard the sirens of the engine and the second rig and he gritted his teeth. Now they show up.

"Miller your driving. Get us to Grey Sloan." Ben demanded hooking Miranda up to everything inside the aid car.

Dean closed the door. Getting inside cutting the sirens and lights on moving through traffic.

"Thank you." Miranda mumbled to Ben.

"For what?" He asked looking down at her face.

"For keeping your word and getting me out of there."

"Don't thank me."

"I want too. You are good at your job and as far as I can tell you're a great man. Sorry if I said something earlier that might would have offended you. Like the commitment issue thing." She said quietly.

"I wasn't offended at all. I like your feistiness.

"We're going to grey Sloan?

"Yes. Why?"

"It's just I'm the chief and I never show a weakness or even share my personal business with them. So this is new, but they're the best at what they do." Miranda said pursing her lips.

"I'm sure they are if they learned from you."

"You're swe--."

Ben looked up as the machines went crazy and Miranda eyes were rolling back. Her blood pressure was too low.

"Oh God." Ben shouted as he saw blood spilling from around the glass. He hopped up and applied pressure to the side of the wound.

He couldn't remove the glass because she would bleed out. He held his hand there firmly as he got it under control.

"Miranda. It's going to be okay." He whispered. Ben knew she was out and couldn't hear him, but he kept talking anyway.

"You are a fighter, your son needs you and the hospital."

"You have been fighting all damn day. Please don't go." He whispered.

They pulled up in the trauma bay and Dean got out opening the door.

"39 year old female, bp 80/60 and falling. Glass in upper left side of abdomen penetrating through ribcage. Which is broken."

"Chief." Owen shouted shocked.

"Lets get her in." Webber announced.

"She started bleeding out." Ben informed keeping his hand in place walking along side the stretcher.

"Let's get some B positive hung." Webber also called out.

"It's going through her spleen and liver." Ben informed them.

"Let's move OR 3." Hunt yelled pushing the gurney.

"Okay Grey get in and hold pressure on the wound." Webber ordered.

Ben eyes widened he didn't want to let go. He wanted to go down into the operating room and see this all the way through. He had to make sure she was okay.

"We got it from here." Hunt told Ben seriously and he frowned before nodding. Ben slowly let go as Meredith slid in his place.

He wiped his face and stood in the middle of the hallway until they were gone.
