Stay With Me, Please

"I don't need your help!"

"Kairi, stop being stubborn. You can barely walk as is."

"I'm fine."

Great. She was injured and her least favorite person in the world was trying to help her; Roxas Aoyama. Why didn't she like him? He was an asshole and Kairi didn't like assholes.

She wasn't exactly sure how she got injured. All Kairi knew was when she tried to get up from her seat on the train an intense pain had flowed into her upper calf. She wobbled and limped toward the train exit. Home was fifteen minutes away. Kairi could make it. Definitely.

Kairi felt her bag being lifted from her shoulders. She turned to the blonde beside her, an insult on her lips, before she was lifted herself. Thank goodness she was wearing pants today.

"I told you I'm fine!"

Roxas let out a bitter laugh. His dark blue eyes simmered with an indescribable emotion. Why was he helping her in the first place? No, Kairi told herself. He was just an annoying prick who had little to no manners.

"No, you're not."

"What are you gonna do? Carry me the entire way home?" She snorted. "Put me down and stop making a scene," Kairi hissed. "Everyone's staring."

Roxas quirked up an eyebrow as if to say, "So what?" before continuing down the stairs of the train. Kairi pouted. Her cobalt eyes scanned their surroundings. There were a bunch of people staring. A lot more than she was comfortable with.

"Don't you think that's a little much?" a woman murmured to her friend.

"I don't know, it looks pretty romantic to me."

"Hm, didn't expect those two to be dating. I always thought Sora was more her type."

"Why don't you ever pick ME up like that? Huh? Huh?"

"...Here we go again."

"Answer me!"

Kairi's ear turned the shade of a cherry. This was so embarrassing. If any of her friends found out, she'd never hear the end of it. At least the breeze was nice. It was then that she noticed her hands were balled up with fistfuls of Roxas' shirt. She could keep it like that or wrap her arms around his neck. Which would be worse? Well, probably the fistfuls of his shirt. Kairi smirked. He'd have wrinkles in his shirt for sure. It'd annoy him.

It was such a nice day too. The cool weather and gray skies were a breath of fresh air compared to the usual sunny sunset skies of Twilight Town. She sniffed. There was a nice aroma in the air. It smelled like a mixture of pumpkins and marshmallows. It was a comforting smell more than anything. A moment later Kairi Takahara found herself even closer to Roxas. The smell was coming from him!?

She looked up and glared. How dare he smell good. If he didn't then she wouldn't have embarrassed herself. It wasn't fair.

"What?"

"...Nothing."

"You're so dramatic," he said.

There was a tiny, miniscule part of Kairi that liked his voice. She'd never admit it because he was such a jerk, but somewhere in the back of her head she acknowledged his voice was attractive. It had a velvety low quality to it. There was something calming about it. If he just talked to her like this all the time she'd probably end up asleep.

What? Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. She was not going there today. (Not that she went there any day ever.) That train of thought led nowhere good.

Of course it'd start to rain because why wouldn't it? At first it was a drizzle, then a light rain, then well, heavy rain. Despite it all, Roxas kept up the same pace.

"You can't move any faster? It's raining pretty hard."

"I happen to enjoy the rain unlike someone."

"I do like rain! It's just pouring pretty hard and it'd be stupid to stay in it any longer than we have to."

"Well, you can't make me move any faster. Wouldn't want to slip and fall. Safety comes first, after all."

He was so annoying. Kairi huffed, shivering as droplets hit the top of her head. An umbrella would be wonderful. All she wanted to do at this point was put on some warm clothes and snuggle up under a million blankets.

Roxas pulled Kairi closer.

When they reached her house, Roxas set her down gently. Kairi fumbled for her bag and opened the door. She thought about closing it on Roxas, but she wasn't that cruel so despite her better judgement, she let him in. Her hands found their way to his. She meant to grab his arm or even his wrist, but somehow his hand ended up in hers. They felt strong, not that she didn't notice that he felt strong when he was holding her.

"Want me to pick you up again?"

"No." She grunted. "I got this."

Kairi let go of his hand and stumbled forward a couple steps.

"Whoa there!"

...

Kairi squirmed when she felt his arms snake around her waist and pull her close.

"W-What're you doing?"

"Steadying you, dummy."

"I-I'm steady!"

He leaned closer. "Really? So if I let go you wouldn't fall on the floor?"

"Yes."

"You're absolutely sure?"

"Positive."

Kairi felt his hands let go off her waist. She took a step forward and ... promptly stumbled forward again.

"Nope!"

"Eek!"

Roxas swooped Kairi up into his arms again and headed for the bedroom. What was this man thinking? He was being really touchy all of a sudden. When he set her down on the bed, she wasn't sure what to do.

"You need to take better care of yourself, Kairi." Before she could reply, Roxas knelt down to her level and added, "I'm serious. Being barely able to walk isn't good. What would you do if I wasn't there to help out? You haven't been sleeping or eating well. Don't think I haven't noticed."

Kairi diverted her eyes. The sheets really needed cleaning now that they were pretty soaked.

"Kairi."

Yeah. Once she was good to get up and walk around, she'd throw them in the dryer. Now that she thought of it, she should probably revamp her room entirely. A change would be good.

"Look at me." Roxas tilted her chin up. "I'll go make you some food and then you're going to rest. I can't have you running yourself ragged."

"I can handle myself."

"No, you push yourself too hard is what it is."

"I do not."

"Yes, you do." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Kairi, I ... listen, I know I can be a jerk sometimes, but I ... I care about you, okay? And if I have to look after you to make sure you take care of yourself, I will."

Kairi's eyes widened, her lips forming into a small 'o'. He took her face into his hands and placed a soft kiss onto her forehead. When Roxas got up to leave, Kairi grabbed his hand.

"Roxas, wait. I - thank you. I'm sorry if I was rude or ungrateful. You did carry me home in the pouring rain." When she met his eyes again, there was something so soft in his gaze. She hadn't had someone care for her like this in a long while and she wasn't very honest with herself. It hurt less to lie about feelings. "I like you."

"I like you too, Kairi."

"Will you stay?"

"As long as you need me to."
