Chapter 1: Sight

Nessie's POV

I woke up with a start. I gasped for breath. I had been having a really bad dream. Although the memories from my dream were already fading away.

I got out of bed slowly and carefully hoisted myself into my wheelchair. I'd been paralyzed from the waist down for as long as I could remember. I didn't have a single memory of being able to walk.

Life hadn't been to kind me. I was adopted when I was around four years old. I didn't have any memories of my biological parents but perhaps that was a blessing. I didn't want to remember the family that had dumped me after four years of caring for me. Soon after my adoption we got into a car accident that was so bad it left me permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

Then when I was ten years old I got my cancer diagnosis. I had leukemia. I beat it. Then it came back. I beat it again. Then last month I found out that it had come back a third time. The doctors said that I most likely would'nt survive a third battle with leukemia. I was going to die.

It was a fact that I tried not to think about. I got ready for school. Mom had already made breakfast for me by the time I went to the kitchen. I ate as fast as I could.

We'd just gone outside when I noticed a girl no older than 17 or 18 years old standing in the drive way. I stared at the girl curiously and she looked very alarmed.

When mom didn't say anything to the girl I knew that she was dead. I'd learned very early on that I was gifted if you could really call it that. I still remember how my mom and dad reacted when I told them that I could see and talk to dead people. I'd been taken to a child psychiatrist and diagnosed as having childhood onset schizophrenia. I'd been on medication for years now.

It never helped any and I think it was because what I was seeing was real. It wasn't some hallucination that occured in my mind. But I'd learned long ago that it was better to pretend that I didn't see them. One time I was hospitalized because of this. I wouldn't stop going on and on about all of the dead people that I had talked to. So my parents thought it was best to put me in a hospital for more intensive treatment. After that I stopped talking about

There was something different about this girl though. There was something about her that I couldn't quite shake. I took a deep breath and forced myself to concentrate on my work when I got to school.

But when I got back home and the girl was still standing there it was impossible not to think about her. She watched me curiously.

I was doing my homework when I heard an unfamiliar voice talk to me and right away I knew that it was her.

"Excuse me. Can you see me?"

I looked at her and nodded.

She looked at me in disbelief. "You can really see me? Hear me?"

"The only thing I can't do is feel you," I spoke to her for the first time.

"Wow. You can see ghosts. You're gifted,"

I sighed. "It's more of a curse really. I'm not normal,"

She smiled kindly at me. I liked her. "Maybe you can help me then,"

I dropped my pencil. I'd been expecting this much. When dead people found out I could see them they usually wanted my help with something. Most of the time I refused but there was something about her that made me want to help her.

"If you don't mind my asking what is your name?"

She laughed. "I'm sorry I got a little ahead of myself. I'm Isabella. Isabella Marie Cullen. But please just call me Bella,"

"Bella. Well nice to meet you. I'm Renesmee but please call me Nessie,"

"Renesmee? How odd that's my daughter's name. Never thought I'd meet another girl with that name," she said.

"Bella. How did you die?"

"In childbirth. My heart gave out right after she was born. I never got a chance to meet her. When I woke up I was...this. I was alone. My family was gone. Nobody could see me. Except for other ghosts. You're the first living person to actually see me,"

"Wow. I'm so sorry Bella," I could feel her pain.

"Can you please help me find them?"

I felt my body freeze and my eyes go wide.

"I know it's a lot to ask and I'll understand if you don't want to," she said. "But-"

"I'll do it," I said quickly. I wanted to help her. But there was also a slightly selfish desire I had for doing so. In about six months or less I would be dead. I'd never really traveled anywhere before. I would never get the chance to have such an adventure again.

"You will?" she looked very shocked that I had agreed.

"Yes. I know this sounds really strange but I want to help you Bella,"

She looked like she would cry if she could. "You have no idea how much this means to me Nessie. I'll see my husband again. I'll be able to see my daughter for the first time ever,"

I felt like I was going to cry now. I held back my tears. "So where do we start?" I asked her.

"When I died we lived in Forks, Washington. We can start there,"

I sighed as the reality of the situation settled in. I lived in New York City and I didn't have nearly enough money to make a journey like that.

"What's wrong?" she asked me.

"I don't have enough money for a journey like this,"

"Do you at least have a checking account?"

"Yes I do but-"

"Then the solution is very simple. We'll simply transfer money into your account,"

I laughed. "If it were that simple I'd be a millionaire by now,"

"The Cullens have bank accounts all over the world. I happen to know the numbers and passwords to several of those accounts,"

I looked at her like she was crazy. Can ghosts go crazy? Because I certainly think that she'd lost her mind.

"Are you suggesting that I steal money!" I shouted. My heart skipped a beat. I had to be quieter before my mom heard me.

"This is the only way we'll be able to finance our mission,"

I didn't like this. I didn't like this at all. I reluctantly went to the website that she'd instructed me to go. My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw how much money was just in one account alone.

"I don't feel comfortable with this Bella. What is going to happen when they notice that there is money missing from their accounts?"

She shook her head. "Trust me Nessie they have so much money that they aren't even going to notice that money is missing from their accounts. You do not have to worry about that,"

I didn't like this at all. So it was with great reluctance that I transferred thousands of dollars out of each and every single one of their accounts into my own.

No matter what Bella said I was terrified of the repercussions of what I had just done. I hoped and prayed that Bella was right and nobody would discover the missing money.
