Author's Note: Ok...so, I'm typing this chapter in a new way. As a note, this IS a rewrite. But with a new title. Anyway...I don't own The Walking Dead, it belongs to Robert Kirkman and AMC respectively. Enjoy!

Chapter One: Begin Part 1

The street was illuminated that night. But not by the moon, nor anything natural. There was a huge house fire. Ever since the apocalypse started, the houses had been abandoned. Well, all except for one. The house held two survivors.

The first one was a young man of 20. This man had black hair, glasses, a blue shirt and jeans and black shoes. His name was Zach.

The second was 20 as well. He wore unmatched clothing. Primarily a red plaid shirt and green khakis. He had raven black hair, and beautiful hazel eyes. This one was Alex.

Zach was currently running while subsequently dragging Alex along. Alex hadn't been the same since this all started.

"Come on!" Zach was yelling. Alex stopped and sighed. "What-why are you stopping!?" Zach shouted in shock.

"You...you yelled at me!" Alex wailed as if he were a kid and not a man.

"Oh for crying out-" Zach began but was cut off.

BOOM!

"Damn it! The fire is spreading too damn fast!" Zach said to himself. "Alex! I'm sorry! But we gotta go!"

"I..." Alex trailed off before the house started to shake violently, a wall erupting next to them. "Ok! I'm in!" Alex replied bolting.

Zach sighed and ran after his friend. Alex hadn't been the same since his parents died. He became an empty shell...and what was left...was replaced by a childlike, yet eerily calm demeanor.

As the duo escaped the house, they saw the foundation come crumbling down. The house, still ablaze, tumbled down.

Zach gasped and heard growls. It was the Walkers. Zach sighed and grabbed his shotgun. "Alex! Listen carefully, I need you to stay behind me, no matter what!"

"Yes, of course Zach..." Alex replied absentmindedly. Zach grunted and started firing the shotgun.

"Let's go!" Zach shouted and they were on their way...

Shane Walsh, and his girlfriend of sorts Lori Grimes jolted awake. Lori gasped. "Shane...what was that?" She asked in fear.

"I dunno," Shane began. "But I'm gonna check it out!" He ran outside the tent with his pistol. He stopped. "What the..."

"Shane!" A man named Dale asked. "What the hell's going on?"

"I heard an explosion, Shane explained. Coming from that way," he pointed his pistol in the direction of the sound.

"Shit..." Dale cursed. "How close was it to us?" He asked fear trembling through his veins. Shane nodded in understanding.

"It was about 10 miles back that way," he added acknowledging that the only other direction they were near was the city.

Lori walked out of the tent. "What's going on?" She demanded.

Dale held his head. "An explosion that way," he pointed. "Since the city is the other way, the Walkers could only come in one direction."

"Right towards us," Shane nodded. He had to think heavily. With them near a quarry, there was hope for a stable camp. But, with an explosion, there was an astronomical chance that the Walkers would come their way.

Lori gasped. "Should we leave?" She inquired. It was true that the walkers go toward sounds, but hopefully they would miss them...but knowing their luck, they probably weren't safe.

Shane sighed. He then remembered something. "I think there's a chance they could miss us. They would probably go down the road."

Dale nodded, "and If only a few come by-" he was cut off by Shane nodding.

"We could easily take em out," Shane replied.

The Next Day

Alex and Zach walked down the road. Well, mostly Zach walked while Alex smelled flowers. They, were in a pickle. They were nowhere near a safe place and with a month gone by...there would most likely not be another safe place.

Zach put his hands on his hips and took a deep breath. They were out in the wilderness now, sad, out of ammo and out of food. Zach felt his stomach as it rumbled.

Alex, as if on cue said, "Zaaach, I'm hungry!" Though it was a complaint.

"Oi...ok, Alex, we are in the forest, we have no ammo, no food...and I'm sure you know, no idea where in the hell we are going!" He growled.

Alex sighed, "If my dad was here, he'd make us a sandwich..." he trailed off.

Seeing Alex sad, Zach calmed down and put a hand on his shoulder. "Buddy...we will get through this!" He said praying that, those words would give Alex hope.

"You...really think so?" Alex asked tears in his eyes and a sad aura around him.

"I know so buddy!" Zach feigned happiness. If only to calm his friend down.

"Yeah! You're right!" Alex laughed and clapped his hands lightly. Zach shook his head and smiled...
