Chapter 1
Camp Hauss, France
April 19th 1944
Paul wakes up to see that the morning sun was in his face, he gets up, and changes into his uniform. He walked out to the camp, and greeted everyone, even the Jew's "Hello everyone." He said to greet everyone. Several soldiers were chatting amongst each other about Paul's kindness to Jew's, Paul would know about it, but he ignored them.
Commandant Fynn Greider is overlooking the yard while Paul is making his way to the barracks. The young girl known as Sarah would watch as Paul walks towards the barracks, she wants to run out there to greet him but knowing that both Paul and herself would get in major trouble, she doesn't.
As Paul walks into the barracks he realises that more of his soldiers left for the front lines. "What the hell?" he thought. "Where did all of my soldiers go?" He asked himself. Paul would hear footsteps behind him, it was the Commandant. "If you are wondering. Your soldiers went out to the village to grab some food." Fynn said. "When will they return?" Paul asked, "In about half an hour." Fynn replied. "Thank you for telling me sir." Paul said, Commandant Fynn walked away, and Paul would go to one of the prisoner barracks to distribute some healthy food.
After being thanked by several jews Paul would head back to his office, just as he was heading back Sarah would push him to a wall and She would laugh. Paul looked around to see if anyone was around, luckily there wasn't. "Why are you so silly around me Sarah?" Paul asked, She replies "Because you are my only friend here, and I like being weird around my friends." Paul giggled, He says "Indeed. So… what did you want?" Sarah giggled, "I wanted to tell you something. Do you have the time to listen?" She asked. Paul replies "Of course." Sarah sighs, "I really like you Paul. You are so nice to everyone, even us Jew's."
Paul is speechless and Clueless to what she just said. He finally says, "Really?" Sarah kisses Paul, Two of Paul's soldiers see it happen and they just watch. When Sarah walked away Paul just stood there stunned by what just happened. Paul walked to his office and saw that Fynn was outside the door. "Hello again commandant." He said, "Can I help you?" He asked. Fynn replies, "No, I was just wondering what took you so long." Paul knew for sure that Fynn would find out eventually but he still thinks that nobody was nearby when Sarah kissed him.
Commandant Fynn left, and Paul walked into his office. "That was too fucking close." Paul said to himself, he sits in his chair and looks through Prisoner files. He sees that several russian prisoners of war will be moved to this camp. "Oh no. I hope they aren't from Stalingrad." He says to himself. He said that because Paul has been to Stalingrad during his time on the frontlines. He saw in one file that Dimitri Petrov was from Stalingrad. "Oh no, I recognize that last name, I killed his family in Stalingrad." He takes the file and walks to Commandant Fynn's office.
Fynn is sitting in the Office right next to Paul's. Paul knocked on the door, "You may Enter" Fynn responded, Paul walked in and showed the file. He asks "Mind explaining this Commandant?" Fynn takes the file and looks at it. "Oh, Dimitri is being sent here from the front lines, as a POW." He said, Paul replies "But sir I know that man, He will kill me as soon as he enters the gates." Fynn becomes curious. "And why would he want to kill you?" he asked. Paul says "Because I killed his family in Stalingrad." Fynn gasped, "Well we will have Three soldiers escort Dimitri to a Barrack." Paul lets out a sigh of relief "When does he arrive?" Paul asked. "Tomorrow evening." Fynn answered. Paul shivered when Fynn said that "Well… Can I head to the village when he arrives?" Paul Asked. "Of course, Tomorrow you will be dismissed from all duties." Fynn Answered. Paul salutes Fynn and leaves the office.
Paul walked back to his office and sat down at his desk and looked at the Dismissed from duty files "Well at least I won't be here when Dimitri gets here." Paul said to himself. Lewellin Knocks on Paul's door. "Come in." Paul said, Lewellin walks in, shuts the door, and locks it. "How are you holding out sergeant?" Lewellin asked, Paul replies "I am alright, Captain Lewellin." Paul grabs a record of a Shipment of new prisoners and gives it to Lewellin, "They are bringing Russian POWs here. The Allies might want to hear of this." Paul said, Lewellin takes the files and looks through them. Lewellin asks "When do the POWs Arrive?" Paul replies "Tomorrow evening." Paul sits back down at his desk, "But I won't be here around that time, I will be at the village." Lewellin ponders for a second "I will make sure that the Allies hear of this, We really appreciate you helping us Paul, once this war is over President Rosevelt would like to meet you." He said. Paul is surprised "Really, the President of the United States wants to meet me?" Lewellin nods "That's also why I came here today, to deliver that message." He says. Lewellin says "That will be all then" Lewellin salutes like an American and Leaves the room.
Paul sighs, looks out the window, and looks at the Barrack that Sarah lives in. "Soon." He said to himself. "Soon." He repeated. He continues to look out the window and sees that Two soldiers were talking to a Jew, Paul looked at the Three with worry. One soldier yelled "Stirb Jude Abschaum!" Then the other soldier shoots the Jew in the head with a PO8. Paul Gasped and ran out of his office towards the soldiers "THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" he yelled. One soldier replied "This Jew wasn't working and he Paid the price."
Paul was dead quiet, The soldiers dragged the body to the rubbish heap and tossed the body in. The soldiers walked back to their guard posts, Two of Paul's soldiers would walk up to him. One of them says "Don't worry sarge, we'll make fuckers pay." Sarah looked at Paul from afar and a tear rolled down her face.
Paul walked back to his barracks and laid on his bed. "At Least Colonel Stauffenberg is trying to stop all this." he said to himself. He slowly goes to sleep.
The next morning Paul gets out of bed and goes out to the camp, "Hello everyone." he said. Paul eventually gets to the Armory, Takes a PO8 and puts it in his holster. Paul walks out of the Armory and heads to the village. On his way to the Village he saw a little girl playing on the road. "Who would be out this far from the Village?" Paul thought.
Paul begins to walk up to the Little girl, the girl freezes and she stares Paul down. Paul stops 6 feet from the girl, "Hello little girl. What are you doing out here by yourself?" The girl nervously looks at Paul, "I-I was just playing, p-please don't take me away." The girl said. "You will be fine, What is your name?" Paul asked, "Camille, Camille Ange." she said. "Well, Camille. I was just on my way to your Village. No need to worry about me. I won't hurt you." Paul said. Camille goes back to playing and wanders into a minefield. "CAMILLE! DON'T MOVE!" Paul Yelled. Camille stops moving and looks at Paul, "What is it sir?!" She yelled, "Don't move, You're in a minefield."
Paul is now in a bad situation, "Stay here, I am going for help." He said, he ran off to the village to get help from fellow soldiers. When he finally gets to the Village a truck comes from the minefield, and two soldiers are escorting Camille to the Village square.
Paul's heart sinks, "What am I gonna do? The Gestapo will shoot her on the spot." he said in his head. "Wait, I got an Idea." He walks up to the soldiers and stops them. He says "I will take the Child. Report back to Grieder." The soldiers nod, they get back into the truck and head back to Camp Hauss.
Paul turns to Camille "What happened?" he asked, Camile replies "They were patrolling the road and they found me stuck in the minefield. They got me out and they shoved me in their truck and now here I am." Paul sighs, "Well at least I sent them back to Camp Hauss. You would've been in Gestapo hands by now." Camille walks away and Paul heads to the square.
