It's not the way they wanted their family to know about them but last night had changed all that. They'd been dating for three and a half months and were taking things slow. She'd arrived at her shift like always and said hi to Josh. Her shift progressed the same as always until the calls from the pile up started coming in. She'd been emotionally detached from the event until she'd received his call. At first she hadn't recognized his voice until Sue told her to call the number back.
"Hello this is Albert Han please do not leave a message that's what texts are for" Listening to the voicemail message had her turning ice cold. Before the call had been cut he'd said that he was bleeding alot and now he wasn't answering his phone. How bad was he injured that he couldn't answer his phone. He had to be okay. She didn't know what she'd do if he wasn't okay.
"Bobby, the call came from an Albert Han, Chimneys brother"
"Are you sure? I thought that call was dropped" asked Bobby
"I called the number back and it gave me his voicemail" she said hoping her voice didn't crack. She needed to do her job and get Albert the help he needed
"What did the message say" came Buck's voice through the radio
"He said his name and not leave a message"
"Because that's what texts are for" finished Buck
After a while Bobby radioed dispatch asking about the first caller who reported seeing the vehicle and which exit they were calling giving him the information the 118 went radio silent again
The wait for news on whether they had found Albert and if he was alive was excruciating. Worse case scenarios kept crossing through her head even as she did her job. It wasn't more than 20 to 30 minutes that had passed when the 118 called in that they were transporting a male with internal bleeding and to have a massive transfusion standing by. After hearing that she just wanted her shift to end so she could go and see him, make sure that he was still alive. That his heart was still beating just as it had been the last time she'd hugged him with her ear pressed against his chest.
When her shift finally came to an end she felt like a lifetime had passed, the only thing that gave her energy to continue was the fact that Albert was alive and stable. Making up her mind she headed straight to Presbyterian.
At the front desk she asked for directions to Albert's room.
"What's your relationship to the patient" asked the nurse
"I'm his girlfriend"
"I need you to sign here. Here's your visitor pass and his room number is
Thanking her she headed towards the room number she was given. Entering his room the first thing she saw was the neck brace he had on. Once she was standing next to him she could see the extent of his injuries. Sitting down she grabbed his hand and began making a circular motion on his hand with her thumb. That seemed to rouse him.
"Hey, how did you know I was here?"
"I'm the one who took your 9-1-1 call, and since the 118 is family Sue let me know that you were stable and which hospital they took you to."Hearing how weak his voice sounded had May tearing up.
"May, hey don't cry. I'm fine. Just a little sore and banged up. Nothing a good rest won't fix"
"Don't lie to me, Eddie radioed that they were transporting a male with internal bleeding. I don't have to be a doctor to know that it's bad." she said, tearing up some more and letting out a small sob.
"Luv i'm here, i'm fine. So dry those tears and smile for me" he said wiping away her tears and caressing her cheek.
Grabbing onto his hand that was on her cheek she kissed his palm and looked at him. Happy that he was alive and still with her. Standing up she carefully caressed his cheek and leaned in to give him a kiss. It was at that precise moment that the door to his room opened and in walked Buck and Chimney.
"So how long has this been going on?" asked Buck looking back and forth between Albert and May.
"About three and a half months. We're taking things slow and were trying to find the right time to let everyone know" stated Albert looking at Buck
"More than anything I was trying to find the best time to tell my mother first"
"Are you going to say anything Howie" asked Albert
"Does she make you happy"
"More than I've ever been," he said, turning to look at May and grabbing hold of her hand.
"Then all I can say is be prepared for Athena's, Micheal's and Bobby's interrogation"
Leaving Albert to rest May headed home to speak with her mother and Bobby. If yesterday taught her anything tomorrow wasn't guaranteed. She wanted her family to know that she loved Albert and he was a part of what made her happy every day. Standing outside her house she took a deep breath and walked in calling for her mother.
"Mom, Bobby are you here"
"We're in the dining room" called Athena back
Sitting with them at the dining table she began to speak. " I have something to tell you" Before she could continue Bobby spoke.
"Does this have to do with Albert"
"It does. How did you know"
"On the call, your voice trembled a bit"
Athen grabbed onto her daughter hands and spoke " Do you love him"
"Yes, so much it hurt not knowing how he was"
"Does he treat you right"
"As right as Bobby treats you"
"Albert is a fine young man. As long as he treats and loves my baby the way she deserves I have no problem with him."
