Since the twins had moved in, and Scrooge wasn't sure exactly when that happened as they were only supposed to be staying for a short while, the mansion had been chaotic. The once silent halls were now filled with Donald's music, Della's inventions and whatever yelling match the twins were engaged in.
Scrooge was rather relieved when his top-secret, kept in a locked drawer, SHUSH telephone rang. An adventure was just the thing to keep the twins occupied. Unfortunately, Agent 22 disagreed.
"This is a highly classified mission, minimal personnel involved," she told him. "Be at HQ in fifteen minutes or less."
The line disconnected before he could reply. Scrooge sighed. He'd given Duckworth the day off after Donald's little mishap with the leaf blower. To be fair clearing the leaves had been his punishment for trying to sneak out to a concert in town without permission and he hadn't known that Della had been tinkering with it, but Duckworth hadn't been in the mood to listen to excuses. There was no-one else to look after the twins, and he didn't trust them on their own. Picking up his Duckburg telephone directory, Scrooge began turning through the pages looking for a babysitting service. The twins wouldn't appreciate having a babysitter at their age but his sister would kill him if anything happened to them.
It cost extra to persuade the babysitter to come right away, but Scrooge needed someone who could stay with the children even if his SHUSH mission took several hours. He called the twins down at the last minute, as the babysitter headed up the driveway. Della reached the foyer first, sliding down the bannister on an oddly shaped snowboard. Donald tumbled down the steps a few seconds behind her and Della cheered that she had won.
"Are we off on another adventure?" Della asked, picking up her snowboard and tucking it under her arm.
"No lass, I've been called away on urgent business and I cannae take ye with me. I need you both to be on your best behaviour, I've called for a sitter to watch you instead of leaving you here alone."
"Aw, we're old enough that we don't need a sitter," Donald told him.
"Then consider her a house sitter, who is here to make sure that you don't burn down my mansion or destroy any priceless artefacts that I have. I expect you both to be on your best behaviour, and to listen to whatever you're told."
Della smiled at Donald, noticing that their uncle had only told them to listen to the babysitter and not to obey them. Scrooge was looking at the twins and waiting for the doorbell to ring so he was surprised when the front door was opened without any warning. Turning around, expecting that he would have to berate the babysitter for failing with common courtesy, he leaned too heavily on his cane and nearly fell out when he saw his visitor.
"Goldie? What are you doing here?"
Golden-haired Goldie O'Gilt, the woman Scrooge had raced across deserts and oceans to reach treasure first, smiled at him. Scrooge suddenly felt nervous, he wondered which of his latest acquired treasures she'd come to steal.
"Can't a girl just pop by for a visit? You know Scroogie, I've seen better security measures on tree houses in the jungle."
Della's eyes had widened when Scrooge greeted their visitor. She'd overheard her parents and grandparents talking about Scrooge's odd girlfriend - though he'd always denied they were in a romantic relationship everyone in the family seemed to think they were just hiding it because Scrooge didn't want to pay out for a wedding.
"You're Goldie?" she asked, moving towards the older woman. "I'm Della, Scrooge's favourite niece. Is it true that you're as old as Uncle Scrooge? Did you really get stuck in a glacier together for five years?"
Goldie placed a hand over her heart, "aw, you talk to your family about me?"
Scrooge frowned, "only to warn them not to trust you if they see you. For some reason they won't listen."
"Probably because you love her," Donald said, folding his arms.
Goldie blinked, then looked at Scrooge, "what did he say?"
"Kids, don't talk to this silver-tongued she-devil, she'll try to steal everything you own."
Goldie laughed, "come now, you know children never have anything worth stealing though I suppose the pocket money from a wealthy uncle..."
"What do you want O'Gilt? I don't have time to play games."
"I told you, I just came to say hello."
"Well then, hello and goodbye," Scrooge grabbed her shoulders and started pushing her towards the front door, but Goldie dug her heels in and somehow managed to slip from his grasp.
"You know kids, your uncle used to know how to have fun. I guess hitting the century age mark..."
"I'm not falling for any of your tricks this time Goldie-lass. Come back some time next week and we can battle it out for whatever artefact you're after."
Goldie's eyes lit up, "ooh, what's the rush? What priceless item are you off to find this time? If you're nice to me I might come with you."
"I... you..." Scrooge sputtered, as the part of him which wanted Goldie to come adventuring with him battled the other part which knew it was a terrible idea.
"Scrooge McDuck, speechless," Goldie sounded triumphant, "how I've missed this."
"Actually Uncle Scrooge is off on a top secret mission, no treasure involved," Della told her. "He's not even taking us along."
Turning to the young duck, Goldie studied her, "and does he take you on many adventures?"
"Oh yeah, since we moved in we've been to dozens of places," Della replied.
"And almost died a dozen times too," Donald added.
Goldie stared at him puzzled, "seriously, is that a super-strong Scottish accent or some crazy ancient language? I'm familiar with most accents and have absolutely no idea what you're saying."
Donald glared at her and folded his arms. Scrooge had gone to peek out the still-open front door, but the sitter was nowhere in sight. All of a sudden, they heard a piercing scream nearby. Donald gave Della a look that suggested he knew the cause of the scream and the twins ran to the front door and out past Scrooge.
"Interesting kids you've got there," Goldie told him. "I never took you for the domestic bliss type, being surrounded by family and children in particular."
A moment later, Donald and Della were back. Donald mumbled something to Scrooge, who looked furious. Goldie watched, curious to see what would happen next. She didn't like the look on Scrooge's face when he finally looked over at her.
"It appears the babysitter will not be able to look after the twins. Therefore I must find another adult to watch over them."
Goldie stepped back, "oh no. No way."
"Kids, forget what I said before. You're in charge."
Della high-fived Donald, "told you that Woodchuck project would pay off".
Rolling his eyes, Scrooge continued, "if your parents call, tell them you've got a sitter but DON'T tell them her real name. I'm trusting you to watch Goldie and make sure she doesn't steal anything."
"You can't leave me here to watch two children," Goldie told him.
"I assume you're going to stick around until you can find whatever you came here for, so you might as well make yourself useful. The kids can look after themselves, just NO firecrackers - they know why." Scrooge walked over to Donald and Della, giving placing a hand on their shoulders for a moment, "take care of each other. I'll be back as soon as possible, and I'll try and get Duckworth to return even if I have to give him triple pay for the day."
Goldie stared at him, her beak hanging open, "this is crazy."
Scrooge raised an eyebrow, "I'm already late and this isn't something I can leave for another day. I have to go."
"Bye Uncle Scrooge," Donald and Della spoke at the same time, Donald's voice a little quieter.
Scrooge smiled at how well they were taking the change of plans, then left before Goldie could disappear.
