She remembered the day like yesterday.
Her legs straddled his abdomen, her knife pressed against the soft skin of his jugular. Blue eyes pierced her back as she kept her narrowed gaze on the man beneath her. "Em." He breathed out, "You know me. It's me." He whispered, her blue eyes furrowing as she kept her knife pressed against him, a thin line of blood dribbling down the side of his neck. The voice, soft and velvety made a blocked memory slowly push its way out; but she growled out, baring her teeth. "You're name is Emma Juliana Barnes, and your brothers name is James Buchanan Barnes." He coughed out.
"Shut up! I'm the phoenix, I have no idea who you're talking about." She hissed, punching him in the face. "You're my mission."
Steve gazed up at her one more time, her cheeks were still dotted with freckles, just like in the 40's. Her button nose was still the same, and her lips were still chapped; like she had pulled at them. She had become stronger than she was in the 40's but he blamed HYDRA for that. "Then finish it." He breathed out, dropping his shield out of the falling helicarrier. "Because I am never going to give up on you." She looked once more down at him, before the helicarrier finished it's decent into the water.
She felt herself drowning, before a hand grabbed her and pulled her towards the surface. The Phoenix started coughing up the water as she tried to catch her breath. She saw the blonde haired man that was their mission hanging on the other arm of the Winter Soldier. "There's something familiar about him." She breathed out as the two of them put him on the warm sand, "Вы тоже это чувствуете?" She inquired, making the brown haired male look over at her before nodding.
"Не помню откуда, но знала его. Мы собираемся выяснить, откуда." He answered back before stalking away, before the brown haired woman look down at the injured man. She touched his face lightly with the back of her calloused hand, before whispering.
"Извините, я знаю вас откуда-то, но не знаю, откуда." A large tree branch snapped her out of whatever trance she was in before she dashed off into the darkness. The Phoenix found The Winter Soldier at the Smithsonian, "Friends since childhood, Steven Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Emma Barnes. Emma and Bucky Barnes were the only howling commandos to sacrifice their lives for the cause."
"Is this why we both know him?" The phoenix, Emma Barnes questioned softly. Her eyes furrowing, as The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, stuffed his hands into his jackets pockets. "So, what we were war heroes?" Emma had always been the more talkative out of the two assassins. Bucky just nodded, "So, we were right. We did know him."
"On the school field, Emma Juliana Barnes protected him from bullies; but when Steve got the super soldier serum, Rogers thought it was his duty to keep her safe." A flush of embarrassment coated her cheeks, as Bucky pressed his lips into a thin line. "Emma was the love of Steve's life, when she died he took it the hardest." A man, probably a worker looked up and his face showed confusion before Emma jabbed her arm into her brothers ribcage, that's weird. She thought to herself before shaking her head.
"Bucky, we're being watched." His head snapped up to see the worker looking at the two Barnes siblings, he frowned before grabbing her hand and dragging her towards the entrance. "Buck, slow down. I don't have long legs like you." She complained, tugging at his arm gently and he slowed down slightly. Once outside in the hot weather, Emma looked over at Bucky. "What are we going to do?" She questioned, biting on her lower lip.
"For now, we need to split up." He sighed, sadly. "They'll be looking for both of us, it's better this way."
Emma frowned, "We'll see each other again, right?" Bucky nodded silently, before hesitantly and albeit shakily reached forward and brushed a kiss against her forehead.
"До свидания сестра." He whispered before turning around and slipping into the overflowing crowds.
Emma clutched her fingers together before turning around and heading towards her destination.
Emma looked at the dog tags around her neck, she never understood why she had them, but she guessed it now made sense on why she had them. His black and blue face looked back at her as she pulled the metal from around her neck and placed it on the bedside table beside him, "I don't deserve these, I'm a monster." She whispered, laying a hand against them on top of the metal once more before brushing a blonde hair away from the mans face. "I'm sorry, I can't remember you. I'm sorry that I hurt you."
"Haven't you and your brother done enough?" She jumped up in shock when she heard the harsh voice, making her turn around to see Sam Wilson, the falcon, leaning against the doorframe with a glare plastered over his face. "What are you doing here, Barnes?" She flinched, before pursing her lips together; it was unlike her to be scared, and she wasn't about to show it to this unknown man that she was scared. That she was scared of her future, her life on the run.
She picked at her thumb, "I'm just leaving." She sighed, pulling up her hood over her dark brown hair. Sam looked at her, knowing he should tell the FBI and police that she was here, but he couldn't find it in himself to do so; he didn't want Steve to think he was betraying him. "Or are you going to stop me?"
"Go," Sam entered the room, and she gave him a thankful nod before slipping from the room. Sam looked after her before walking towards where she was standing and seeing the dog tags leaning on the table.
