Extended summary: Yasuda Kana is introduced into a classroom of wacks and consequently, into a life of chaos. With a burdensome ability, she is concerned about her well-being. She bonds with her psychic classmate, Saiki Kusuo, for what little peace and quiet they could get amongst the questionable series of events that unfold.
'Normal'- talking. Italics- thoughts. 'Italics'- telepathy. This isn't exactly my style but narrating is hard when Saiki's mode of communication is 99% telepathy.
At the back of his head, Saiki Kusuo knew that some kind of force in the world enjoyed intervening in his aspiration for a peaceful high-school life. So far, he has attracted the attention of four troublesome classmates and they always manage to rope him into obnoxious situations.
He could do for some alone time.
Cafe Mami was the perfect place for him to unwind and enjoy his favorite treat: coffee jelly. Just the thought of it made his chest flutter with excitement.
On the way there he made sure not to bump into any of the four individuals on his blacklist. He felt relief as the Cafe came into view with no menace in sight. Even if it was a weekend, he was on full alert.
Today was significantly peaceful than yesterday. Maybe the Gods decided to give him a break today after all the unwanted attention they've been throwing his way. The sun was bright but the wind was cool. The people were even serene, not a single thought floating through the air.
Wait that's not right. Kusuo paused. Quickly, he looked around and saw people who were talking among themselves as they passed him. Their thoughts, however, he couldn't pick up.
This day was too good to be true.
He surveyed his surroundings more finding nothing suspicious. Eventually, he settled himself on one of Cafe Mami's booths where he analyzed the situation.
He didn't feel like he was in immediate danger. Rather, it felt nice to not be hearing bombarding thoughts in his own every second. His other powers were still working seeing as the other customers in the establishment were reduced to muscles in his eyes.
'Cling!' the bell at the cafe's door jingled. Was it always there?
In came trouble.
Well, not exactly since Kusuo didn't know who they were. But she did not look like an extra and they always scream bothersome.
She appeared to be quite young, maybe around his age. A little on the taller side. Uncommon white hair, even with his global intervention, and lilac eyes. What really caught his attention was that she still had skin when he kept his eyes on her for a considerable amount of time.
Kusuo heard whispers from the other customers who seem to have noticed her as well. They weren't subtle and blushed as she neared them.
To his surprised, she stopped at his table and smiled down at him.
'Excuse me. All the tables are taken. May I sit here?' She asked.
No. He almost blurted out but considered his options. If she had the same powers as Teruhashi, all the men in the cafe would not hesitate to attack him if he was to decline.
'Okay.' He projected into her head.
'You'll need to open your mouth.' She replied.
Kusuo blinked. She didn't hear me?
'It would be painful for me if you didn't use your voice instead.' She stated, her smile faltering.
'Okay.' Kusuo forced out. It's been a while since I opened my mouth.
'Thank you.' She sat down across the table.
Without saying any more to him, she waived Mera down and ordered a cherry tart and an iced latte.
Kusuo kept eating and did his best to seem unaffected by her presence. His thoughts already riddle with ideas on how to escape this ordeal.
The moment Mera stepped away from the table. She looked at him with a bit of hesitation in her eyes and flicked her wrist.
'We now have exactly five minutes to talk, Mister.' She stiffly nodded to the rest of the cafe. 'They won't be able to hear us during the duration.'
Who are you calling mister? Kusuo's expression stayed the same.
'You have some kind of power, Mister.' She firmly announced and he felt his thought raise.
Am I going to have to get rid of her? And I'm still not a mister.
'I don't know what it is or how many you have but I can feel you trying to access my mind.' She stated as notice his questioning gaze.
'I'm not going to hurt you, Mister. But I have to know if you mean harm or not. If you're good then I'll remove the block.' She explained as she fidgeted with her fingers on the table.
Ah. She's the culprit. Oi, stop calling me mister.
'I'm... good.' His words coming out a bit awkward since he was not use to physically communicating.
'Alright then.' Apparently, his reply was enough for her.
Kusuo winced, a barrage of thoughts crashing to his own. He almost forgot how noisy it was because of the short moment of blissful quiet he had.
'Are you okay?!' Her eye widened at his pained expression. She instinctively leaned towards him.
'Fine.' He tried to blink the pain away.
'Um, I can put the block back on if you want.' She offered as her brows creased with worry.
The offer was very tempting. Kusuo shook his head. He just wanted what this was to end and head home.
'I'm really sorry! I didn't know the extent of your ability!' Her voice trembled a little as she peered at him while he dropped his spoon on his dessert dish.
Before he could decline again, Mera came into the scene tart and latte in tow.
'Here's your order, dear customer!' She held the tray out and slowly set her order down on the table. Glancing at the food hungrily one last time before turning away.
'Here.' She pushed the glass of latte in his direction. 'Please accept as a token of apology. I'm very sorry, Mister!
Well, don't mind if I do. Kusuo took the drink with eagerness and took a sip. He sighed feeling the coolness of the sooth his aching head.
'Are your abilities back, Mister?' He noticed her voice had become more quitter as if losing confidence.
He blinked at her and to his dismay, her eyeballs stared back at him without her eyelids.
'Could you block my x-ray vision? I don't fancy talking to a piece of meat.' He asked.
'Ah! So that was the other one.' She said, her hand traveled to cover her lips. She did not look too bothered to hear him talking in her mind. 'It's not a threatening ability but I blocked from me just in case.'
Slowly, her flesh appeared.
While he was as used to talking to moving muscle, he much prefers this.
The fact that she's also pleasant to look at was just a bonus. He told himself.
'So, who are you?' He asked her.
'My name is Yasuda Kana.' She introduced having completely toned her voice into a low and considerable volume. 'I'm sorry again, Mister.' She added.
'Saiki Kusuo. You can stop calling me mister now. We're likely the same age.' Kusuo replied and spooned some coffee jelly into his mouth. He could almost forget that there was a stranger who knows that he has psychic abilities now.
'Nice to meet you, Saiki-kun.' Kana smiled at him again. This time with a hint of timidness hanging on her lips.
He looked around and saw that people were still gaping at her. 'They still can't hear us?' He asked.
'Yes, we have seven minutes before the block disappears. I can only hold it until then.' Kana replied. She titled her head and raised her hand to her lips again. 'Would you prefer I reply to your thoughts like this?'
'I'd appreciate that.'
'I guess I should explain now?' She asked as she finally started digging into her tart.
Kusuo's impression of her was accurate. She was far from ordinary. Apparently, when she was four she started to notice that her hair and eyes had changed into unnatural colors because of his own ability which he confirmed to her. As she grew up she began to realize that it was only her that found it weird when humans started gaining new attributes such as fast recovery, questionable time warps, and of course the fact that everyone just accepted every time they evolved as if it were normal.
'You went through the changes as well but didn't get mind-controlled into believing it.' Kusuo told her?
'Eh? Mind control?
'I'm the one who caused those changes too.' He revealed while taking a piece of her tart. In the middle of their conversation, Kana had pushed her plate closer to him and he took the offer, taking a piece then and now. 'But I used mind control to make everyone believe it was normal.'
Kana blinked at him before taking a bite out of her tart as well.
'That makes sense. I naturally repel anything that affects me negatively. Mind control seems to be invasive. It makes sense.
Kusuo pushed his coffee jelly closer to her tart as well, silently offering for her to partake. Kana smiled at him before using her fork to balance a piece of jelly and cream into her mouth.
'I can sense when people have abilities. I can't necessarily know what it is but I can feel how it affects me. Saiki-kun's telepathy was like a screw being twisted into my head while your x-ray just feels like a cool gust of wind. The coffee jelly tastes good.' She explained.
'It sounds useful. My abilities are mostly annoying. They're powerful, yes, but I'd rather I didn't have them. Yours act like some kind of shield. It's great. The coffee jelly here is decent. I mostly only come here because people from my class don't.' He took a sip of the latte and let her take a piece of jelly first so he could reach for her tart. He was starting to like the sour treat.
'As I've said before, it can get quite painful. The sound block is something I learned, it can block both ways like the ability block.' She thought when she realized she didn't explain that but to him yet. 'Maybe I'll get used to your powers. I live on the apartment a few buildings away, that's when I sensed you- Oh but you only come here sometimes don't you?' She asked.
'Yeah, my classmates tend to force me into coming with them when they catch me after school. The sound block is truly great.'
Kusuo looked around the cafe. Most of the customers had left (those who were dragged of by their significant others when they started to get distracted with Kana) and the cafe was less noisy. She had dropped the block a few minutes ago, it was only then when he realized that he also couldn't hear them talking. Mera was an exception since the block was around their table and she had unknowingly entered the bubble when she took and delivered her order.
'Where do you go to school, Saiki-kun?' Kana asked.
'PK Academy.'
Curiously, Kusuo saw Kana's expression shift faintly. Her lilac eyes glittered with something akin to amusement. He raised her brow at her but she only shook her head.
'It looks like I'll have no trouble getting used to your powers then, Saiki-kun.' He watches her place her fork gently on her now empty platter. She stood up, her timid smile etched on her face, and set two bills on the table.
'Oi, don't go cryptic on me.'
Kana only giggled in a secretive manner. 'This should be enough for both our meals.'
And with that, she walked through the cafe door and disappeared into the street. Kusuo only stared, he was for the lack of words, stumped. He had no idea how to feel about how his afternoon had played on. He looked down at his coffee jelly which for some reason was still unfinished. Kana had roped him into talking and eating her dessert than eating his heavenly treat.
Today was miles away from the ordinary.
But somehow, it was still peaceful.
Kana was peaceful.
Kusuo wasn't too astounded when Monday came and a rumor of a new student spread through the entire campus. Kana's last words from Saturday rushed into his mind.
Good grief. He thought but his lips twitched to form an invisible smirk.
He seems to have found himself a useful ally.
