The Trojan Princess
Chapter-1
(Start of a new war)
Wizarding Britain
1810, Black Manor, Wiltshire
1810 is the ongoing year, middle ages are an up and down for the wizarding world. After the end of the forty years Riddle War in 1803, people have starting to recover. Though the economy is struggling and the Wizard's Council is still busy in making negotiations between the factions of Pure-ones and Albus Dumbledore's the order of the Phoenix.
Pure-ones is the side created by Nicholas Malfoy and Cygnus Black (The first) to protect the 'old ways' from dying and to teach the Wizard's Council how to run the wizarding community. It's their influence which coined the werewolf act and muggle hunting acts, only one of them to came in action despite of the huge protest by the rival faction. Wiltshire is the capital of Pure-ones because of their prominent families the Blacks and the Malfoys resides there. The pure-ones stood alongside Lord Voldemort during the war, though they did not directly enter the battlefields but with their near endless wealth gave Voldemort the advantage of swaying many creatures and Council's official on his side.
The war swallowed many of the pureblood families the Lestrange, Carrow, Mulciber and the Rowles. Despite their involvement in missing of many muggles and muggleborn witches and wizards they somehow buy their freedom out. The villages of Appleby, Barnton, Tinworth, Wimbourne and Tutshill with many of the wizarding west country came under them.
Their influence was the main thing which hurts them now. Which is what irking Lucius Malfoy and his father-in-law Cygnus Black (The third) the most.
"our businesses are going down" said Lucius breaking Cygnus out of his musing, Lucius has a indifference look on his face "we cannot maintain our empire on our personal wealth, it will leave us nothing."
"I know where you're coming from Lucius, but you should know we can't afford another war" Cygnus said, he knew Lucius is still sore of their defeat and since they lost their villages of Ireland and Wales, their dealing with other wizarding nobles have been declined. Many of other pureblood families had cut their ties with them to save themselves from the backlash from other communities.
"Seven years Cygnus, seven years how much are we going to wait it's not like that we don't have potential warriors, Flint is a capable general he showed his capability during the last war. Theodore has well handled the west country after the demise of his father." He suddenly woke up and points towards a family portrait of his family, point of his staff directly pointing towards his son's face in the portrait "Then there is my son, grandson of you and Abraxas Malfoy. He showed his leadership qualities during the battle of Tinworth. With Zabini his side and sons of Crabbe and Goyle as his executioner, his battalion will be invincible."
Cygnus sighed heavily and rubbed his forehead, his son-in-law's obsession over a war is getting out of the hand. He knew they had a skillful and Tremendous army, Greyback's many of the savage friends who do not want to live a life of cowards have come to them for shelter. They were of course reluctant but who would let go a whole group of loyal bloodthirsty weapons. Then there were giants of northern Scotland who were still holding grudge to Dumbledore who made them signed the peace treaty to the Wizard's Council. It wouldn't take long to pursue the vampire lord Aemilius to migrate half of his army of skillful fighters as he held them a huge debt of feeding his people, when they were starving to death.
Only a fool would try to fight this vicious army of these horrific creature some of them can just kill before you even bat your eye but Cygnus also knew that it is hard to forget that Lord Voldemort once held a more treacherous army but were unable to defeat warriors of the Order.
"Lucius, son do you really want to throw your son into full fledged war. I don't have any doubts about how capable our children are but," he sighed again when he saw Lucius's face is starting twisting face into an angry frown "listen to me I have as much as anger as you and I also want to stand alongside our children fight, slay our enemy but Lucius we had to start with a full-fledged plan. Dumbledore had cemented himself a huge castle which can't be broken with one of your mere attack."
Suddenly something flickered behind Lucius's eyes and a sinister smirk came over his face, Cygnus knew something stony has come into his mind. He had same smirk on his face when he caught him sneaking into his second daughter's room. He had the same smirk when he told him about the ruthless death of Fabian and Gideon Prewett by the hands of Dolohov. He had the same smirk when he and Bellatrix executed Sirius the traitorous scion of Orion to death. He had the same smirk when he killed that Blood Traitor's fourth son. He had the smirk which Cygnus knew will bring a huge amount of destruction in upcoming period of time.
"A castle itself cannot stand if you attack it's foundations Cygnus" Lucius stood and pour wine in his goblet "and one blow, that will all take to shook Dumbledore's castle from inside." He said gulping the whole vine from the goblet. Cygnus eyed him "And how are you going to demolish these foundations, If I might ask" he asked accepting goblet Lucius poured him, but Lucius focus is somewhere else. He followed his eyes and gaze landed on Abraxas's portrait with himself.
They both are standing proudly with their hands on each other's shoulder, behind them was castle of Wimbourne. He had nothing but fond memories of his old friend, they both grew up together, learned together, ate together and fought together. Soon their friendship became a relation after they both wedded Lucius and Narcissa. Abraxas died a heroic death during his duel against Alastor Moody five years before the end of the war. He still mourned death of his friend and 'you will be avenged my friend', Cygnus has vowed to kill Alastor Moody the day he got news of his friend's demise on the hand of that scum.
"He often used to tell tale of different battles when I used to be a child" Lucius said, Cygnus turned his to watch him and saw a bit of grief in Lucius's eyes "I used to be so excited, he never forgot to tell me the adventured you both endured together especially the time you both put down the resistance of werewolves in Lancashire" Cygnus smiled at the mention of that memory "hundreds of battles, spells and strategies we used to discuss every time we got a chance" Lucius chuckled sadly "but one day surprisingly my father ran out of stories and to more of my astonishment my mother told me a story of a battle." Lucius's eyes met Cygnus.
"Do you which story she told-" he asked his lips curling into a sneer "-a tale of muggles!" he spat throwing his goblet in anger "I was disgusted, started yelling at my mother for even mentioning those filths in front of me and I expected father to do the same but he didn't, he told me to calm down and listen to what my mother has to say" he is started breathing hard and Cygnus knew the wine is getting into Lucius's head.
"It was a tale of a legendary city of Troy it was said that it was impossible to made that city and it's people kneel, many believed It to be invincible because of its defenses" Lucius again turned his gaze towards his father's portrait "until one day Helen who was the wife of Menelaus the king of Sparta, ran away with her lover Paris, the prince of Troy. It was an insult for Menelaus, so he went to his brother Agamemnom and asked his help to destroy the city of Troy. Agmemnom agreed and both brothers raised a fleet of thousand ships." He poured himself another goblet of wine ignoring disapproving look on Cygnus face, he stood up from his seat stumbling on his feet "a bloodshed of a war take place in Troy between both armies, legends of warriors fought and die but Troy was still standing proudly with blessings of gods. It was until Odysseus came up with a strategy, they created a enormous horse of wood and hid their hundreds of soldiers inside it with Odysseus himself leading those men."
"The Trojan's arrogance made them believe that this enormous horse was a present, a trophy, for their victory but how wrong they were, those men made a reign of terror over whole Troy. It was burned and destroyed and what did it took, a night, only a night was enough to make the invincible city of Troy to burn to ashes."
Lucius was breathing harder his cane is the only support which was helping him to stand. He turned towards his father-in-law who is lost in thoughts.
'Asterope' Cygnus thought about the woman who took his friend's heart. Asterope was the last heiress of the 'House of Selwyn', she was cunning and keen when it comes to a battle. Only few people know that many of their battle strategies were created by Asterope. Abraxas always used to say 'my Asterope was a blessing of Merlin for us', and Cygnus never declined that. Even from the times of their youth, Asterope was always the mastermind and even Lord Voldemort used to cherish her strategies. Cygnus always knew that there is always something going in her mind, schemes, strategies, goals but the most important thing was the path to victory.
Their hold of power over those settlements of Ireland and Scotland was courtesy of Asterope. Her prayers for a child came true at the age of thirty when she gave birth to Lucius, he still remembered brightness of her and Abraxas's face when they both held their infant son in their arms for the first time. Asterope died at the age of forty six leaving her heartbroken husband and sixteen year old son.
Perception was Asterope's strongest skill. Cygnus always knew she had foreseen the downfall of Lord Voldemort and the Pure-ones, she even tried to warn them about the outcomes of the war when pureblood families like Weasley, Prewett, Abbott, Shacklebolt and Potters joined the forces of the order during the early rise of resistance which later became a faction of 'Order of the Phoenix' led by none other than Albus Dumbledore who was the hero of the first war against Grindelwald.
'oh Asterope' sudden realization struck Cygnus.
"I think now you realized, why your mother told you the legend of Troy Lucius." He asked standing up himself and meeting Lucius gleaming eyes.
"Oh, I do Cygnus I do. I realized now how my mother planned the destruction of an empire even before it's foundation are created" Lucius said with a malicious smirk.
Cygnus laughed "Asterope, oh you wonderful Asterope. Abraxas was right you were a blessing to this kingdom." he drank the whole goblet of wine in one gulp "Hicky!" he called.
'CRACK'
"Master called Hicky." a voice croaked said as an elf appeared. The elf had huge red brown eyes with batty ears and was barely two feet tall with a tainted tea towel nearly covering his whole body.
"Send a message to all our dukes and generals, tell them to be presence has been ordered at the court tomorrow by noon, is it understood?" Cygnus told the elf who nodded fervently "yes master." And with that she disappeared to continue her task.
"So, tell me Lucius who is going to be your this 'Trojan horse'?" Cygnus asked Lucius. Lucius smirked and answered Cygnus leaving him aghast.
"Anastasia Nott".
-The Trojan Princess-
Tutshill
Checking her bag looking for the wooden material she had kept closer to her, a brunette walked through the little market of the village, some of the older men and women waved to whom she happily waved back. She made her way to the back of the market soon she came face to face with the nursery of the village. She entered the place and start looking around for Tabitha, the old lady who ran this small yet beautiful nursery.
For travelling muggles it's a nursery in the small village of Tutshill but the thing they don't know that only certain people reside in this small village which is in reality a whole town for those certain people. Tabitha's nursery shop is the place for the ingredients mainly used for potions.
"Ah, hullo Hermione how can I help you." came a booming yet sweet voice of Tabitha, the girl Hermione turned and said with a warm smile "good morning Tabitha, how are summers going for you."
Tabitha is not much long in height, she had curly dark brown hair with squared jaw and light green eyes. "oh nothing much dear just preparing for the other ingredients to grow and then there will be time for harvesting."
Though many people had their land of own they but don't bother to grow potion ingredient because half of this village population is muggle too.
Many of the wizards and witches with muggle ancestry settle these magical settlements which used to came under Wizard's Council until the Riddle War started and completely shook the council from its core. During starting of the war, the pure-ones annexed these settlements and made them their territories with building their fortresses, evading tax from the wizards and witches living there, enforcing their laws with a Duke and Duchess controlling their respective areas.
The life of the muggleborns and their families were not easy during those dire times, many of them tried to fled and settled into muggle settlements but were killed in trying to do so. They were forced to do bidding of the pureblood families. They had to hand seventy percent of their harvested crop and the witches and wizards had to handover their wands as they do not deserve in views of those pureblood families.
After the defeat of Voldemort and end of the war, there situation was starting to get better. They can keep their fifty percent of harvesting and they could visit public libraries to help the young witches and wizards in controlling their magic. Though Wizard's Council often came for their inceptions but as they all are corrupted because of the wealth the pure-ones owned.
People of Tutshill were no better as they were under the keen eyes of Duke Theodore Nott. Theodore is son of general Deacon Nott, the ruthless general of the pure faction. Deacon took responsibility of Tutshill after the defeat of Hogsmeade but wounds of the long war made him lose his life in the span of a year only. Theodore took his father's place, he was sharp, perceptive and most dangerous in a duel. He has favor of Cygnus who's rather fond of him, even though Draco is his Heir he chose Theodore as his brigadier general.
Tabitha was searching for Salamander blood through her pantry while Hermione is watching the fascinating faes who are floating freely in the air without a worry in Tabitha's garden. Since Hermione was a child, she had been fascinated by fays. Her grandmother who was a witch herself used to tell her stories how Faes created magic and distributed it to people like her. She used to sneak into the gardens whenever she noticed them.
Hermione was a bright girl since her childhood. She couldn't control her magic and it had been worry for her parents who were both muggles, to avoid any conflict and harm they decided to move to Tutshill where her grandmother who was a witch herself lived. Her grandmother used to teach little magic until she was eight but can't fulfill her curiosity because she herself don't know much of magic. Then one day Hermione tried to communicate to a fay who was flying through her grandmother's garden, the fay of course can't understand her but she didn't know how but the fay realized her needs and lead her to the pack of fay who gifted her a wand they created from vine wood. They somehow used to make her dance with them like they are telling her let flow, one day surprisingly one day she created light with her wand.
After that day she started practicing, day by day her perfection was increasing. She started brewing potions and the book her grandmother gifted her a book of healing potions was a great help. Hermione was reluctant to take that book, because the book was gifted to her grandmother by none other than by Dutchess of Ilkley and general of Order of the Phoenix Minerva McGonagall. Her grandmother used to tell her the stories of the brave general, her grandmother was stuck on her run during the war but she was captured and was going to be executed but out of nowhere a powerful force tarnished her captors to ground.
When Hermione asked her grandmother that why she wanted to give this gift to her which was so close to her, her grandmother simply smiled and said "General McGonagall told me that every witch or wizard deserve magic because they were born with it. Magic is as much as ours as much as it is of any pureblood. She gave it to me to show world how much a muggleborn child deserve magics but I was not strong, I got scared and lived a life full of terror and horror" she said with a pained expression, Hermione knew her father's brother who was a wizard was killed in the war and her grandmother never really recovered from that. "but you my Hermione" she said stroking her cheeks with her old wrinkled hands "you are everything I was not. I can see it in your eyes my dear, you came into this world for bigger things, you are destined to make a greater change than you can ever thought of."
Hermione sighed pushing her grandmother's memory out of her mind. 'you are destined to make a greater change than you can ever thought' these words of her grandmother always came into her mind whenever she thought of her grandmother, her grandmother never really answered the meaning of her words until the day she died.
The weather is getting chiller as it is mid-November. The recently harvested wheat is getting watered by the farmers present there. Hermione had been helping her parents on the fields since her childhood, ever since she got that book from her grandmother she had found many potions and powder for saving their crops from pest, many of the fellow farmers are fond and grateful of her for secretly supplying needed potions and teaching the magical ones some of the potions for their daily needs. They manage to trick the soldiers who are responsible for collecting tax from them who never suspect of them using potions for better cultivation until they are getting regular grains for trade and they have been successful so far.
As Hermione walked through the fields of Corn she noticed the fields are suspiciously quiet. She knew many farmers would have been went to their home for lunch but it did not take away the dread she felt weighing down on her chest. She glanced at the wanted poster which was hanging by a nail on a tree. There was no picture it only has a sign of unknown and name of the person who committed following crimes.
Wanted
The Granger
Treason
Reward: 5 Galleons
'5 galleons' she thought impressed by the amount which had been set on her. Yes, she is 'The Granger. She often used to visit Yorkshire with her mother who spend her childhood there and her mother's father, Eustace, also lived there. She never had same relationship with him as much she had with her grandmother because of her being a witch, which she can never tell him but she will always remember the day she asked him what is the biggest weapon for a revolution. Her grandfather was impressed he never expected a twelve year old child to ask about how to start a revolution, but instead of explaining it further he told her one thing "'my dearest' he said taking her hand in his 'Weapons do not make revolution, the sword of revolution is sharpened on the whetting stone of ideas'".
The ideas bring revolution, her grandfather was right. When she was eighteen she decided to write and made people read about her ideas. She knew people would not listen to a girl and they would cause riot if they ever saw any women writing. One day she created a name, a name her grandfather Eustace once read her in one of his fictional novels. She wrote stories and articles of Riddle War, Fays, mistreatment of muggleborns during the war which she learned from horrific stories she heard from her parents and fellow villagers. The children of village are jovial enough to help her putting posters for cheesecakes and cookies. The soldiers didn't suspected children behind this so she continue to take their help, but she never told them her true identity and she always met them with a hood covering her face.
Her words started getting attention of the villagers especially those who faced the horrors of Riddle War. One day she decided it's time to raise voice against the mistreatment they are facing just because of they are born in lineage. She started pointing failures of the administration of the Pure-ones and their bias ways against those of with muggle blood.
After the harvesting season, her father gifted her owl on her birthday. She started sending her posters by owl to different settlements. Perseus, her owl always written back somehow delivering those posters somewhere and she always prayed spirits that those posters are making some change to the other magical settlements.
She felt proud whenever she saw elders at market, men at fields, wizards and witches of Tutshill discussing or agreeing on the words she wrote. But it hurts her that no one would have appreciated or taken her words worthy to notice if she would have written them as Hermione not 'The Granger'. She accepted it long ago that Hermione has to stay into the shadows of Granger to achieve her dream of revolution and if the price of freedom of muggleborns is this, so be it.
"People will think of you as a deranged if you kept staring in space Hermione." a smooth voice said, Hermione turned and there was standing a weedy man who looks like he is in his middle twenties. He is tall and thin, his dark hair shining a little in sunlight he has dark penetrating eyes. He was walking towards wearing a tunic white cloak and trousers.
"Mathew." greeted Hermione with a nod. Mathew was a traveler wizard who settled in Tutshill. He used to live in capital city of Wiltshire. He moved to Tutshill due to economic crises he was facing there. He still travels to Wiltshire because of his trading business of magical herbs and fungi. His house was inside the forest not far away from the property of Duke Nott. He collects herbs from the forest and work in Nott's manor greenhouses for three days a week.
Mathew stopped besides her, he glanced at the wanted poster "The Granger eh" he scoffed "didn't expected Tutshill's soldiers to be so incompetent." he turned towards her "who do you think giving the duke this much headache." he asked.
Hermione kept her face indifferent, "well if I would have known, this Granger would have been in prison and five galleons would have been in my bag." She replied with a small smile.
Mathews shook his head "And here I thought I could take gossip out of you." he said with a smirk. Hermione laughed and shook her head at him.
"How about you, how was the trip to Wiltshire? got any interesting news from the capital?" she asked as they both started walking through the meadows towards her house.
Mathews jerked his head towards her and raised his eyebrows "What kind of news would you like to listen Hermione?" he asked. She shrugged "Anything you would like to tell me brother."
"Nothing interesting oat's demand is high and I think Tutshill is earning a good amount of galleons of oat from last few years." Mathews said biting his fingernail "but there are rumors that Lord Black isn't too happy with Duke Nott nowadays."
Hermione raised an eyebrow "I thought Nott has favor of Black?" she asked him. Mathews chuckled "There is nothing like favorite in politics Hermione. If you don't prove yourself worthy at the given chances you will be crushed by the bigger ones sitting at the upper ranks."
Hermione gave him a glance "You look well informed in department of politics Mathews, learned from somewhere?" she asked.
Mathews shrugged aloofly "Father always used to spew political rubbish all the time at dinner till the date he died, I think it runs in the blood." he said while Hermione chuckled.
"Hmm so Lord Black isn't very pleased with Nott, anything he did to displease the lords of Wiltshire?" she asked him. Mathews glanced towards her "The reason was on the poster you were watching earlier."
Hermione steps stopped, her face went pale luckily Mathews didn't notice sudden change in her demeanor and was walking without any care. Hermione on the other hand was asking herself different questions 'what if they found out my true identity', well Duke Nott still didn't got succeed in his search and he is said to be the most cunning person in the whole kingdom of the Pure-ones. Her mind was thinking about different punishments her family has to endured if she ever got caught. She still remembered what happened to old Dimitri. Dimitri was an old loon who drinks and wanders the streets and farms of Tutshill, her father told her he used to be a bright and jovial man who lived happily with his wife. One day some soldiers brutally raped and killed his muggle wife, Sophia. Dimitri was devastated and vowed revenge, he went to the Duke for the justice who dismissed him without even bothering to hear him. His letters to the Wizards Council came back without any response. With no choice in his hands Dimitri resorted to the last resort of taking matter in his own hands. He killed soldiers who rapped his wife with an axe and left their bodies in front of Duke's manor. They say the killing continues for three days until Duke Deacon Nott himself caught and dragged Dimitri to the market to show everyone an example of what happened to the people who defied him.
Dimitri had told Deacon Nott that he is not frightened by death now, he said that death will be an nothing more than a gift more him as it will reunite him with his wife now. After listening Dimitri Deacon Nott informed them that he never wanted to kill him. Everyone who were present there are stunned by the Duke's words. But the ruthless Duke look Dimitri in eye and said "You are not going to death this easily. These people need an example, an example of what happened to those who goes against their superiors." The Duke ordered his soldier to punish Dimitri with cruciatus curse. There middle of the market of Tutshill, Dimitri who just wanted to get justice for his wife, whose wife was brutally raped and killed just because she was a muggle, poor Dimitri who thought he could bring change and ensure justice for every innocent caught in the games of savages. .
She still saw Dimitri roaming all over the village murmuring to himself, jumping, singing, smiling and always crying bawling Sophia's name. Many people felt pity for him and many of them think he is a fool to thought he could fight the odds.
She shuddered at the thought of her parents facing the same fate as of Dimitri. She didn't care of what going to happened to her, she stopped caring about herself the day she lift that quill of revolution. What she don't want is other people suffering for her deeds, especially her parents.
"You muse a lot, sister." Mathews voice bring her out of her reverie, she turned towards Mathews who looking at her with an curious expression "something wrong?" He asked.
She shook her head "nothing just thinking about the lessons-" she said while reaching for the cheesecake in her bag "-just thinking about the lesson I had to give to the children this evening." She gave him the cake who raised his eyebrow at her, she huffed "You would be hungry, I know today was you shift at Nott's manor." he accepted the cake with a smile (which was rare because Mathews do not smiles a lot).
He put the cake in the side pockets of his trousers "Nothing gets past you Hermione, does it?" he asked smirking. She chuckled and shrugged at his statement.
They walked a bit and the outlines of her house is visible now. Her house is not much bigger but she had a separate room which once use to belong to her grandmother. They had a barn in which they had a couple of chickens and two cows.
"I think it's time I take my farewell." said Mathews stopping in his way.
"What!? come Mathews, father would be happy to see you" she said grabbing his arm. Mathews faced her with a amused grin "As much as I appreciate your father's tips on attracting beautiful ladies" Hermione snorted "but I had to go to home and take a little rest for tomorrow. I had to leave for Wiltshire tomorrow by noon, with the Duke nonetheless."
Hermione frowned "You are going there again, why?" she asked as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"A meeting was called by Lord Malfoy and Black today. All the duke, duchesses and generals are called for this meeting" he paused with a thoughtful look in his eyes "do you think they are preparing for another war Hermione?" he asked startling her with the question.
'Another war' she thought while shuddering at the thought of what will be the consequences of this war, if there is going to be one. She stared at him for a minute "Do you think Wizards Council can manage another war?" she asked.
Mathews scoffed "Wizards Council is nothing more than a fragile leaf which can fall down by a soft blowing of wind. Wizards Council's head was a greedy boot licker of rich noblemen, throw him few galleons and you are far away from trouble." He said leaving Hermione surprised, yes, she knows the Council is deaf whenever when it comes to muggleborns' rights but it came a surprise to her that even the head of the Council is nothing but a mere piece of dirt in front of the Pure-ones.
"You mean that the Wizards Council is nothing in front of factions?" asked with a soft and hollow voice. Mathews nodded blankly "Why do you think factions still holds these villages or settlements under them when there is a Council, they control their settlements in their own ways. The Council doesn't even enforce laws from the fear of factions, rather pathetic if you ask me."
"If there is going to be another war what do you think what is going to be happened to people like us?" even though she knew the answer herself she need to ask his views in it.
He looked into her eyes "Worse than the last time, Hermione." She felt a hint of coldness in his and she can feel her heart clenching at his statement.
Even though she is scared, she did her best in hiding it and suppress a small smile "I don't think no one will bother us with us peasants, will they?" she asked jokingly. Mathews stared at her black house with a thoughtful look, he jerked his face towards her with a look of indifference look on his face "You don't know what game fate is going to play with us." He turned and left without a word or a backward glance leaving a bewildered Hermione.
