Warning for extreme fluff and the wonderfulness that is Ted Tonks being a teacher of all things Muggle. Word count is 1,186 words. I hope you all enjoy A Quest of Dungeons and Dragons.
"I may be small, but I am mighty," I said, looking down at the board that I had just finished setting up for our game of dungeons and dragons.
"No, you're just sma….," Edgar Bones began teasingly as Ted elbowed him in the side. "OW! Why'd you do that for?"
"You teased my girlfriend about her height," Ted said, putting an arm around me. "No one teases the fair maid without answering to me afterward."
"The fair maid can take care of own problems," I said, kicking Edgar's foot under the table.
"OW!" he exclaimed, glaring between the two of us. "What is it? Is today beat up Edgar day or something like that?"
I looked at the game Ted had suggested we play in confusion. It was a Muggle fantasy game and he hadn't entirely explained the rules to me yet. Except for the fact that I had to make up a character for myself.
"Are our characters ready?" Ted asked, looking between myself and Edgar.
I could see Edgar nodding out of the corner of my eye. I looked down at the sheet of paper and I couldn't tell if my character was ready or not.
"I'm not sure," I said, handing Ted the piece of paper. "What do you think of my character?"
"I think she's great," Ted said, looking over what I'd written on the piece of paper about the character I was to play. "I'd just replace witch with mage because they don't have witches in DnD."
"Alright," I said, trying to keep the confusion out of my voice as I corrected the scattering of witch that was in my character profile. "But shouldn't they consider the mage the witch?"
"They should but they don't," Ted explained as he handed out tokens to each of us. "Now we start the story."
"The story?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "I thought the game would require capturing a dragon and putting it in the dungeons."
Edgar started to laugh at this which caused me to blush a deep red. It wasn't my fault that Edgar Bones had known Ted longer and had learned DnD before I did. I saw Ted's elbow go out and poke into Edgar's ribs again.
"OW! Will you stop that!" Edgar exclaimed, holding his ribs.
"Will you stop making fun of my girlfriend?" Ted exclaimed. "It's not her fault that she's just learning about Muggle games." He turned to me with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry about him. He thinks that everyone should know what he knows if you know what I mean?"
I nodded even though I didn't truly know what meant.
"Now DnD is like telling a roleplay kind of story," Ted said, confusing me even more. "A roleplay is where you make up characters and DnD is where the character that you made up is put through an adventure-like story. Are you following me so?"
I nodded. But Edgar wasn't going to sit quietly by. He looked really agitated and he was going to have his say on things.
"Why can't she just watch us play until she gets the hang of it?" he asked, folding his arms over his chest and looking pointedly at me.
"Why are you like this?" Ted asked, looking at his friend. "You're not usually this way with anyone. Is there something wrong?"
"It's that thing we talked about last night," Edgar said, looking at his hands. "We can discuss it later on."
"Alright but don't take that out on my girlfriend, okay?"
"Yes," Edgar said, turning to me with an apologetic look on his face. "I'm sorry for being rude towards you, Andromeda. It won't happen again. I promise."
"I forgive you," I said, knowing what was going on because his ex-girlfriend was a friend of mine from Ravenclaw.
After few more moments of learning the ins and outs of Dungeons and Dragons, we were soon able to start a game.
"Your party encounters a village being overrun by trolls," Ted said, reading from a booklet in his hand. "What do you do?"
I looked at both of them and say the most logical thing I can think of. "We defend the village and the villagers from the trolls?"
"Yes," Ted said, grinning and holding out the dice to me. "Now in order to shot a spell at the trolls, you have to roll the dice."
I rolled the dice as Ted explain what landing on each number meant. I looked at the dice to find that I had landed on a number that meant my attack had hit the trolls.
"Fireball," Edgar yelled, taking the dice and giving them a good shake before letting it go.
"The troll has dodged your fireball, Sir Edgar," Ted said, looking over to me. "What milady mage be doing this turn?"
"Potion of Burning?" I asked not even sure if that was a thing in DnD or not. I picked up the dice and rolled them.
"Your potion has been wiped back on by a high blowing wind, dealing you a small amount of damage," Ted told me. "Would you like to use a healing potion?"
I nod.
"Fireball!" Edgar yelled once more, rolling as he had before. "Failure isn't an option. Not in this. We must save the village and its people."
"Sir Edgar is right," I said, looking to Ted to confirm that the fireball Edgar had sent towards the troll had hit them.
"Sir Edgar's fireball has scored a direct hit and deals a good amount of damage to the trolls," Ted said, looking at me encouragingly.
"I'm going to use Hex," I said, rolling the dice and watching them land on one of the numbers indicating a hit.
"Your hex has hit and the trolls are now susceptible to defeat," Ted said, excitement filling his voice as he watched Edgar pick up the dice once more.
"Fireball," Edgar said, sounding most triumphant even though we hadn't won yet. He shook the dice once more and then blew on them. Seeing my look he quickly explained. "For luck." He then held them out to Ted who below on the dice as well. Then he held them out to me.
I looked at Ted and Edgar in confusion.
"The whole team has to blow on the dice for good luck on the last turn, Meda," Ted explained. "It's one of our traditions."
"Oh," I said, blowing on the dice and watching as Edgar let them fly.
We all looked at the dice in silence before Ted grinning stood up and exclaimed, "You have defeated the trolls attacking the village. The villagers are most thankful to you for your help and are throwing you a party. Congratulations on winning the campaign!"
"That was it?" I asked, looking between them.
"What were you expecting a ticker-tape parade?" Ted asked jokingly. "We can do another campaign if you both want to?"
"I'm in if you both are," I said, looking between the two of them.
"Teddy, my man, I think you've created a monster," Edgar said, putting the pieces back in their original spots.
I would like to point out that I have never played Dungeons and Dragons before. I've only seen it played on Stranger Things so I went with what they were doing. So, if I got anything wrong in the gameplay please let me know and I will try and fix it. I hope you all enjoyed A Quest of Dungeons and Dragons as much as I enjoyed writing it.
