Hey all, hope you are all safe with this pandemic going on. This was an idea that I have had in my mind for a while now, I had written a similar story years ago, like almost a decade ago. That one was more random with no real overarching story so I wanted to try it again for years now. Well here it is finally. I do not own Yugioh 5Ds.
CH 1 Jack Needs a Job
The garage apartment was quiet as Yusei typed away on the computer and Crow lounged on the sofa, a dueling magazine on his chest. They were taking a break from working on the Duel Runners as Yusei logged their results in their computer records. There was a severe lack of Jack and his booming voice.
"Where is he, Jack said he'd be here before we took a break." Crow sighed in frustration, it was getting ridiculous at this point. He never seemed to be around when he was supposed to.
"Probably out in the town or something ," Yusei groaned as he looked over the many folders of data on the cluttered computer screen," Jack was supposed to clean up all these folders yesterday."
"Yet here you are doing it for him?" Crow asked sitting up as the magazine fell to the floor.
"You've been staring at the same magazine for the past week, haven't you finished it by now?" Yusei spun his chair around to face Crow who refused to look at him.
"The articles in this month's issue are really good for a change…"
"That American duelist is featured in it right?"
"Yeah so what?"
"Nothing, just haven't seen you that interested in another duelist that much."
"It's called respect, for those incredible duel skills, not because she's beautiful."
"So you admit it?" Yuesi walked over and picked the magazine off the floor. As he suspected the green haired pro duelist Crow had become obsessed with was featured proudly on the front. Crow stood up and snatched it away from Yusei.
"We should be focusing on Jack and his inability to hold a job, we work our butts off to make money and he spends it all on that expensive coffee!"
"He just has to keep trying till it sticks, he needs to find something."
Crow groaned as he folded the magazine carefully before putting it back in his pocket,"he's had four so far and got fired day one from all of them. He's hopeless I tell you.
"Who's hopeless?" Both Yusei and Crow turned to see Jack descending the stairs. He was two hours late despite his causal attitude. Crow stomped over to the stairs glaring at the taller man.
"You are, we told you to get a job and yet you lost four so far?"
"Dueling is our job Crow, if we want to reach the top we need to be at the top of our game."
"Unless you were out winning us money from dueling tournaments than you still haven't learned."
"It's obvious that I was too good for those places, they wouldn't have contributed to my rise to the top."
"Why don't you go open a duel academy or something, put your skills to work?"
Jack brushed his shoulders against Crow as he walked past him," someone beat you to that idea if you recall." Jack noticed the magazine in Crow's pocket and yanked it out. Seeing the cover of it he just chuckled at Crow before sitting on the sofa, legs on the table as he leaned back into it.
"Hey give that back, I bought that with my money, you know from my job?" Crow emphasized the last word as he tried to get the magazine back from Jack.
"At least I'm not drooling over some second-rate duelist," Jack mocked as he flipped through the magazine feigning interest.
"Take that back right now!" CRow shouted back as he yanked the magazine back from Jack.
"Would you two stop acting like children?" Yusei was getting tired of having to be the mediator with all of their petty arguments. He walked past them and headed up the stairs.
"Where you going Yusei?" Jack asked him.
"Out I need a break." With that the door shut behind him leaving Jack and Crow to their own devices.
Bootleg:
Yusei found himself outside the Bootleg, he hadn't planned on it but he needed someone he could vent to, aside from Akiza and the twins. Stepping into the shady bar he was greeted by a small group of patrons gathered around a tv. Blister was cleaning the glasses when he saw Yusei enter, giving him a nod he set down a glass of water across from him. Yusei ignored the group as he sat down on the stool. Grabbing the glass he fiddled with it, the ice clinking together as the water swirled. Blister sighed at him as he continued to swirl the ice around.
"I doubt that water is really that interesting," Blister said leaning on the counter, his eyes level with Yusei's," so what's eating at you?" Yusei let out a long sigh as the group behind him continued to gush over whatever they were watching.
"Unless you need something from me, that's the usual story with the people that come here nowadays."
"Sorry but I don't, just need some space away from the others," Yusei said as he finally took a sip from the water in his hands.
"I get that, having roomates isn't all fun and games."
"There we go again fans," Yusei turned slightly at the voice of the announcer on the tv," once again the Queen has completed another conquest!" The group around the tv began cheering loudly as Blister sighed at their outburst.
"I never should have told them they could come watch her duels here."
"Crow has been obsessed with that duelist recently too," Yusei said taking a large gulp of water.
"I can't blame them, that girl is the top duelist in America right now, Queen Clarissa. Surely a duelist of your caliber has at least some interest?"
"Her D-Wheel is pretty impressive, just don't talk about her in front of Jack, you know what he's like.
Blister couldn't help but laugh," yea an ego the size of the Kaiba Dome. Makes sense, more competition means more chances to get shown up. So what's bothering you?
"We told Jack to get a job, he had four different ones the previous week. Got fired on the first day each time."
"Sheesh that's crazy, then again I assume his entire life has been dueling."
"Pretty much, I'd tell him to get a job teaching kids how to play the game, but I don't think that would end well."
"Heh too rough around the edges for that," Blister laughed filling up Yuse's glass again," so what kind of jobs?"
"Bookstore clerk, dry-cleaners worker, restaurant cook and cafe waiter."
"I think I see the problem actually." Yuesi looked at Blister confused by what he meant.
"We just told him to find a job, not what kind."
"That's the problem, Jack is too egotistical to work a job where he has to serve the customers, it needs to be a jon about him."
"I don't think being a professional bragger is a thing."
"Right, but he likes being the center of attention, he wants people to follow him, buy what he buys, listen to what he wants them to listen to. That is what it's like to be a King after all."
"Well we all know what happened when he worked with Godwin."
"I have an idea Yuesi," Blister handed Yuesi a flyer," this might just work."
Yusei had to read it a few times not wanting to believe what he was seeing," infomercial show host?"
"Exactly, he'd get paid to brag about how cool a product is and why people should buy it. He'd be on tv for all his fans to watch, I bet the companies would pay big to get him to endorse their products. Who knows how much he could make, even that big American duelist is doing endorsements."
"She's a professional model so that doesn't count."
"Ah that's true," Blister conceded as he waved at the large group as they left," my point still stands, lots of pro duelists promote products. I bet he'll get it for sure."
Two hours later:
"You want me to do what?" Jack stared at Yusei trying to figure out of he was joking. He couldn't believe Yusei would even suggest such a crazy idea.
"Really Yusei infomercials, where'd you come up with that one?" Crow asked feeling just as confused.
"Blister thought it could work, you'd be on tv for all your fans to see. I'm sure the companies would pay big for sponsorship. Maybe you'd get new fans too. Become the talk of the town again.
"Yeah Yusei has a point," Crow said finally playing along," people would see how charismatic you are, that you have lots of talents in addition to dueling. They'd have to buy stuff just because you're endorsing it. Lots of new people following your shining example."
Jack took a moment to consider their points. It had seemed stupid at first but perhaps they had a point. His loyal fans would flock to the tv to see what he's selling, they'd tell all their friends to watch him. All his fans enthralled and he'd only have to read off a script and mess around with some products. Perhaps he'd get tons of new screaming fans, the King of Infomercials, the King of Dueling, the King of everything. He'd be on the cover of every magazine again, not the American chick. His first step to being the leader of the dueling world.
Jack took the flyer from Yusei with a big smirk," the King shall rise again." Crow and Yusei looked happily at each other unaware of what they had just gotten themselves into.
