The egg cracks neatly on the counter, long fingered hands holding it up, egg white beading along the fracture as he stirs the water with the other hand, simmering softly over gas which hisses quietly, just enough.
The egg slips out of its shell, gentle as it drops into the center of whirlpool, the yolk a sun, misted by firming whites as the water bubbles on.
The shell goes back in the cardboard carton for now and Fai brings a cup of tea, mint, still green, fresh, floating in the honeyed water to his lips, sips it in the sunlight which comes through the kitchen window, hair pulled back and escaping in wisps over his face.
He pulls a slice of toast from the toaster, butters it quickly, puts it down on a plate, spinach on the side, scoops the egg from the water with the slotted spoon, whites firm now, lets it drip a few times, lifting it up and down to shake a few more droplets of water, and then slip onto the waiting toast. He sprinkles on a pinch of salt, some pepper and pushes it towards Kurogane.
"Here, make sure Syaoran-kun eats something before going out today and then it's your turn. Remind him to take his phone." He says softly, smiling at the slightly taller man.
Fai sighs in the warmth of the kitchen, leaning into Kurogane slightly as he hums his assent and gently kisses the top of his head and rattles in the cutlery draw for a few seconds. Fai sets about with toasting some bread for the both of them, sipping his tea happily as he looks at nothing in particular outside. He hears Kurogane's footsteps on the stairs, a knock, and then quiet conversation.
Mokona is likely still asleep, and Fai would be sure to cook more for then, when they wake up. The small creature has taken to sleeping in when they are in quieter worlds, enjoying the peace which isn't usually afforded to them.
He slices into the half of an avocado they have left, it being better for Kurogane's lactose intolerance, and pours the coffee which has finally finished dripping into the pot, no sugar, no milk, not even substitutes.
The other man comes back down the stairs and kisses the top of his head this time, arms briefly resting around his waist, metal slightly cool even through Fai's clothes.
Fai can't help but smile softly, leaning back into him, breathing deeply.
"Thanks for the coffee." rumbles from behind him and Fai hums in reply.
"Ready to try poaching an egg for yourself?" He offers after a second, turning to face Kurogane.
"Of course." He says and Fai smiles, stepping aside from the stove so he can supervise.
Kurogane picks up the slotted spoon, checks the water as Fai had shown him, turns the heat up just a little and begins to swirl it as he'd been shown.
Fai smiles.
