Helga Loses Her Voice

Note: This is before the Jungle Movie. And I don't own Hey Arnold! P.S. Helga has two eyebrows in this fanfiction. Enjoy!:)

Stinky and Harold were laughing under their breaths before class started on a usual Monday morning at P.S. 118. Arnold and Gerald walked inside of Mr. Simmons classroom and noticed.

"What's going on guys?" Arnold asked while setting his books on the top of his desk. Gerald did the same and sat down.

"Nothing..." they said while grinning innocently.

Gerald raised an eyebrow and sighed. "Uh-oh. What did you two chuckle heads do THIS time?"

Harold leaned forward to whisper. "We may or may not have planned a tiny little prank on Helga G. Pataki-"

"What kind of prank?" Gerald asked in curiousity.

"We both put glue onto her seat haha!" Harold chuckled.

"We got the clear kind so it will be harder for her to notice." Stinky added.

"Guys, I'm not sure this is such a good idea-" Arnold said but then Harold cut him off.

"Aw don't be such a party pooper Arnold. It'll serve her right for always bullying and bossing her classmates around. Don't you agree?"

Arnold frowned a little, not answering his question. A little bit after, Helga walked into the classroom chatting with her friend Phoebe.

"Here it comes..." Harold and Stinky whispered while rubbing their hands together evily. Arnold and Gerald looked at each other and frowned.

"Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm. I have a bad feeling in my gut about this Arnold."

"That makes two of us. I think we should stop her before it's too late."

Unfortunately Helga had barely finished talking to Phoebe and was already walking over. Arnold reached out to grab her arm but accidentally missed.

"Wait Helga! Don't sit do-"

SPLAT!

Helga's eyes went wide in utter shock. Harold and Stinky were laughing up a storm. They all watched as she slowly stood up and felt that the bottom of her pink dress was sticky.

"Ew! Gross! Why am I sticky?!" She glanced at her chair and slightly touched it with dismay. A few seconds later she began to smell the scent of glue.

"Hey! Who the heck put glue in my chair!?" She yelped blushing bright pink. Harold and Stinky got up and grabbed a bucket of feathers. They threw it onto the glue that was on her dress. She looked backwards and gasped.

"HEY LOOK! HELGA'S A BIRD!" Harold and Stinky shouted and the whole class erupted into laughter. Well, except for Gerald, Phoebe and Arnold. Helga blushed a dark shade of red. She was angrier than she'd ever been in her entire life. Without thinking, the blonde haired girl ran over and grabbed both of them by their collars. Harold and Stinky became nervous looking into her furious blue eyes.

"I'VE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH YOU TWO DORKS! YOU'RE SO DEAD! YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO LEAVE ME ALONE DO YA?! WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU BOZOS?! YOU BETTER SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN TONIGHT BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHEN I'LL GET MY REVENGE! I HOPE YOU BOTH KNOW YOUR BLOOD TYPE BECAUSE YOU'RE GONNA NEED SOME WHEN I'M THROUGH WITH Y-"

Suddenly, Helga let go of them and fell onto the ground coughing. Mr. Simmons ran over to her and kneeled down.

"What's going on? Helga are you okay?"

Helga continued to cough violently into her arm and then grabbed her throat gently.

"Oh dear, does your throat hurt?" Mr. Simmons asked.

Her eyes went wide and she tried to fight back the tears threatening to escape from her eyes.

"I think I lost my v-voice." She said in a strained raspy voice.

Everyone's eyes went wide at the scene. As for her, she was more embarrassed about all the attention on her. Mr. Simmons stood her up and asked if she wanted to go to the nurse. Helga denied the offer and simply excused herself to the bathroom.

Inside of the girls restroom, Helga was still recovering from her previous embarrassment. She took out her phone and dialed her mother's number.

'Miriam! Please pick up the phone!' She thought while biting her nails. When her mother didn't answer, she dialed her sister Olga because her father Bob was on a business trip. He left her sister to babysit Helga while he was gone since Miriam was always sleeping and not paying attention.

Hearing her sister's voice on the other end of the phone was actually a relief to Helga.

"Hello?"

"H-Hi Olga. It's me Helga." She struggled to say.

"Oh my! Helga! You don't sound so good! Have you lost your voice baby sister?"

"Y-Yeah, but it'll come back eventually. I'm calling you because I need a change of clothes. Long story."

"Don't worry baby sis! I'll be there soon!"

"Ok. Hurry. Bye Olga."

"Bye." She said and hung up the phone. Running into her sister's room over to her closet, she saw that Helga had no more of her usual pink dresses. That's when she got an idea.

Helga was standing outside the school with her arms crossed. She saw a car pull up in front of her.

"Finally." Helga barely squeaked out. Olga smiled and handed her something new to wear. "Here you go!"

"Wait, no these aren't m-"

"See ya at home Helga!" Olga said while speeding away from the school. Helga shrugged and made her way inside to the girls bathroom once again. For some odd reason Olga brought clothes that weren't hers. She was expecting a normal pink dress but instead it was a pair of blue jeans that surprisingly looked really nice. The shirt she was wearing had longer sleeves and was white with a pink stripe in the middle.

'Wow. I'm a little confused but...not half bad Olga.' She smiled slightly in the mirror, but then shook her head back to reality on her way to class. When the door opened, everyone flinched in their seats.

"What are you all *coughs* looking at?" She asked raising a brow.

"Helga, maybe it's best if you rested your voice for a little while. Also I got you another chair to sit in."

She nodded as he directed her over to another chair. Arnold could see that Helga wasn't happy and decided he would find a way to make her feel better. Turning to his desk, he began to think of a plan. His thinking stopped temporarily when he saw her running a finger across her throat while glaring at Stinky and Harold. For some reason that got him to smile in amusement. He quickly looked away when she looked in his direction.

'Weird. Was Arnold...staring at me and smiling?' Swooning at the thought, she continued to do her classwork.

A little bit later Helga was standing at her locker getting her books. Inside, she felt empty because her voice was gone. Slamming the locker door shut, she banged her head against it feeling worse than ever. Unknown to her, someone was approaching.

"Helga?" A soft familiar voice said.

Slowly twisting her head she looked to the side. It had been her beloved Arnold standing there with a confused look. Seeing him made her jump back in shock.

"Arnold! Don't scare me like that." She said while coughing since her throat felt extremely irritated.

"Sorry Helga. I was wondering if you were feeling up for some Slausens after school."

"Really? That seems sudden football head." (Well it was. I couldn't lie to him.)

"Well, I thought it would help make your throat better. If you don't want to go with me that's fine." He said looking down at his shoes.

Helga sighed. "If you say so Arnoldo. Also you're paying."

He rolled his eyes in response but still cracked a smile.

"I know. Don't worry. I'll meet up with you at your locker after school today and we'll walk together."

She nodded and waved while walking off to her next class. Arnold walked in a different direction with a smile on his face. The day unexpectedly flew by quick and the bell rang dismissing the students from school. Arnold walked up to Helga while she was moving the straps to her backpack on her shoulders.

"Hey Helga. Ready to go?"

Looking at him, she blushed and gave him a tiny nod.

"Don't try and hold my hand though hair-boy." She squeaked out.

"Wouldn't think about it." Arnold said while narrowing his eyes in front of him. They both began walking on the side walk after leaving the school. The pair walked in silence, not because they hadn't been close friends throughout the years but because Helga needed to rest her voice as much as she could. Soon they had arrived at Slausens and went up to the counter. Arnold scanned the menu, guessing what to order for her.

"Hmmm? How about some vanilla ice cream with strawberries on top?" He said turning to her.

Helga rapidly shook her head.

"You don't like strawberries?"

"I'm extremely allergic to them. Just get me plain old vanilla."

Nodding, he began to order their ice cream. To his side, Helga faintly coughed into her arm. This was not her day. Of course hanging out with Arnold was amazing but the fact she couldn't say much right now made her heart sink. Negative thoughts entered into her mind while she waited with him for their order to come. After what felt like an entire century, a worker handed them their ice cream. Arnold looked around then led them both to an empty table. He flashed a friendly smile while giving her a vanilla ice cream.

"Here you go Helga." He stated and sat down.

Clearing her throat she managed to thank him and sat down as well.

"I know that you aren't really able to speak that much at the moment. We might not get along that well, but I understand it probably sucks to deal with this."

Helga looked at him while eating her ice cream. She couldn't help but agree with him. He was right. Not being able to talk as much was a bummer. Part of her regretted yelling at Harold and Stinky because that is what started all of this, but the other part of her wanted to get revenge on them for thinking they could embarrass Helga G. Pataki.

"Helga?"

She raised her eyebrows hearing his voice.

"Did you hear what I just asked?"

Blushing, she shook her head.

Arnold sighed. "Helga...I can't help but feel like this was sort of my fault. Harold and Stinky may have put that glue on your chair, but I barely was going to tell you at the last moment. I told both of them before it happened that what they were doing was wrong, but then they asked me if you deserved it. After reflecting on all of the times you've taunted me over the years, part of me wanted to see it happen. But then I realized the moment before you came to sit down what the right thing to do had been. Unfortunately, it was already too late. And that was wrong. I'm really sorry Helga."

Sighing, he continued to eat his ice cream in silence. Helga was doing the same but showed no emotion. They finished and decided to go to the park. They sat down on the same bench that Arnold and Lila were on when they broke up.

"Does your throat feel better?" He asked.

She shrugged at his question.

"You decided to change up your outfit I see...it looks nice on you." Arnold smiled. He became nervous watching Helga stare forward in the distance. She didn't show any sort of reaction, sparking his concern once again. Not being able to take the awkward tension between them anymore, he stood up in front of her revealing his frustration.

"Okay, what is up with you Helga? Are you mad at me or something? If you are, then feel free to kick or punch me. Just don't leave me hanging! I already told you that what I did was wrong and I'm sorry. From the bottom of my heart, I regret everything that happened. Just please say something or give me a sign! I don't care! Anything would satisfy me!"

Helga's blinked up at him and started snickering until her snickers turned into small chuckles. Then her small chuckles had formed into loud genuine laughter and Helga fell off the bench rolling around on the grass.

"ARNOLD! S-STOP YOU'RE KILLING ME! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Arnold gasped and stood her up. "Helga! You're covered in grass and dirt!"

"Haha yeah I know..." she responded while wiping a tear from her eye. Immediately, she slapped a hand over her mouth.

"What?" Arnold asked not realizing what just happened.

"M-My voice is back!" She exclaimed. Out of pure joy, she instantly gave him a bear hug, wrapping her arms around his neck. Arnold was shocked at the sudden show of affection.

"Are you mad at me Helga?" She heard him sigh.

"I was at first, but then I realized that I should cut you a break. Also don't feel guilty and stuff. I know that if I were in your shoes I would feel the same way. Just try to tell me sooner the next time they try to prank me alright football head?"

Arnold sighed in relief and instantly spun her around in his arms. She blushed before he sat her down on the ground again.

"Sorry Helga. Hearing you say that makes me feel happy. Friends?"

Helga smiled and shook her head. "Whatever floats your boat Arnoldo. Wanna swing?"

"Sure." He said and they both sat down on a tire swing attached to a tree.

"So...what are you going to do about the boys now that you have your voice back?" Arnold casually asked her while he pushed the swing off with his foot. Helga grinned, evily laughing to herself.

"No murdering them both either or beating them up." He narrowed his emerald green eyes up at her.

"Fine. You got a better plan?"

Arnold pondered about it until his lips curled up into a mischievous smirk.

"Hey Helga. Do you by any chance still own that monitor lizard of yours?"

"Yeah but he's become increasingly mean-ohhhhhh."

"Helga, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"Definitely."

Harold and Stinky were waiting around in the classroom early in the morning before class. Helga locked the door and giggled with Arnold. The two boys heard something moving around in the class room and screamed when the monitor lizard came after them. They ran over to the door and beated it fiercely.

"LET US OUT!"

Arnold chuckled and unlocked the door. Both of them ran off with their clothes ripped screaming. Everyone in the hallway laughed along with Arnold and Helga at the scene. They high fived each other picking up the lizard. It licked their faces with content.

"Now this is what I call a good ending." She giggled looking at Arnold. He chuckled and smiled back with half-lidded eyes.

"You said it Helga."
