Pulling the thick, warm blankets up as high as they would go, Zatanna found herself unable to stop shivering from the cold. The heating had gone out in the entire apartment building over nine hours ago and no one had been around to fix it since. It was the middle of winter, snow covered everything in sight and the bare tree branches outside her bedroom window looked like they were going to snap at any second as the wind blew harshly. The night sky was pitch black, the only light was coming from the headlights of cars that drove slowly up and down the street as they tried not to slide off the side of the road.
Artemis was due home over two hours ago and as she decided to text her wife for an update just before she was due to leave, her phone died and as she went to find a charger, the lights in the apartment flickered before everything went black and the power went out.
Looking up at the ceiling, Zatanna let out a sigh and closed her eyes. Artemis was usually never late and her being this late home, it made Zatanna worry. She knew that Artemis could take care of herself, but that didn't stop her from feeling herself fill with concern. Shivering again, Zatanna wanted Artemis to be home so they could snuggle together, and so she would know that she was safe.
Hearing footsteps coming from the hallway of the apartment building, Zatanna listened as they got closer. The sound of a key trying to find the hole filled the room followed quickly by the lock opening and light filling the living room.
"Zatanna, baby, I'm home," Artemis said, her voice filling the apartment.
"Bedroom," Zatanna replied, not wanting to get out from under her pile of blankets.
"Hello gorgeous," Artemis said as she sat down on the bed near Zatanna.
"Hello my love," Zatanna replied, looking into Artemis's dark eyes.
"I'm sorry I'm late home. I left early so we could spend some more time together and knowing my luck I got stuck in a horrible traffic jam. A massive power line fell down and it landed on a couple cars. There were police, ambulances, and fire engines blocking off all the roads and there was no way out until the road was cleared. Luckily no one was badly injured," Artemis explained, knowing that Zatanna's phone had died as she got no replies.
"You're home now and that's what matters. Get changed and come snuggle me, it's freezing," Zatanna replied, feeling the cold still seeping into her skin.
"Okay baby," Artemis smiled, quickly getting changed into her warm pyjamas and climbing into bed.
Curling herself into Artemis's embrace, Zatanna felt a warm kiss being pressed against the top of her head. Smiling at the small show of affection, Zatanna closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling of being held by Artemis.
"I love you," Artemis softly whispered as she gently caressed Zatanna's back.
"I love you too," Zatanna replied, moving slightly so she could look into Artemis's grey eyes.
Closing the gap between them, Zatanna pressed her lips against Artemis's in a heated kiss. Feeling Artemis deepen the kiss, Zatanna ran her hand down Artemis's side and found the bare skin of her hip and gently stroked it. Kissing Artemis made Zatanna's heart beat faster and it made her feel warm from the inside out. Breaking the kiss, Zatanna rested her forehead against Artemis's and slowly took a deep breath in.
"I'm glad you're home," she softly whispered, running her hand up Artemis's side as her wife pulled the blankets up and over them.
