The boys weren't quite sure what they should do for mother's day. Seeing as they had never had a reason to celebrate it before now.
But due to the lack of a reason to celebrate it for so long. It had crept up on them, until quite suddenly. Mother's Day was only a few days away.
With this they began trying desperately to think of something to do.
"We need to think of something to do," Huey said to his two younger brother's pacing around the room. "It's mom's first mother's day back, so we need to make it perfect"
Eventually they all decided to split up.
"Uncle Donald," Louie called, walking into his uncle's house boat.
"Hello Louie," Donald said cheerfully coming down the stairs. Louie was quickly wrapped in a tight embrace. After that he sat down at the scratched up old kitchen table.
"So what do you need?" Donald asked him.
"Why do you always think I need something?" Louie said.
Donald folded his arms giving him a stern look.
"Okay fair enough" Louie said. They sat there silently for a bit before. "What did mom like to do when you guys were younger?"
Donald waited for a bit before responding. "Oh a lot of things flying, adventuring…" he would have gone on but Louie cut him off.
"Anything a little less dangerous?" He asked.
Donald stared blankly for a moment. "Why are you asking me?" Donald said, giving him a suspicious look. "You could just ask her"
"Because… because…" Louie wasn't one to stammer but the look his uncle was giving him made him feel as if he'd just been caught in a really bad scheme. "It's a surprise"
Donald's look changed immediately from suspension to confusion. "What's supposed to be a surprise?" He asked.
Louie Sighed he really didn't have a reason to lie. "We're trying to figure out what to do for mom for mother's day"
"Oh that's so sweet of you" he said, hugging him once more. "And your brothers," he added.
"So what should we do for her?" Louie asked.
"Every parent just wants to know their appreciation." Donald said. "She'll love whatever you do"
"What did you guys do for grandma?" He asked.
"Us and Dad used to make her breakfast in bed, then we'd watch her favorite old movies," Donald said before adding. "You really shouldn't worry about it too much"
"Thanks uncle Donald," Louie said, deciding to meet back up with Huey and Dewey.
"Uncle Scrooge," Huey said, coming into his uncle's home office.
"Huey, lad" Scrooge said in surprise at being interrupted. "I can't talk now with all this work I need to get done"
"I just need a few minutes of your time." Huey said.
Scrooge sighed "okay what is it?"
"So Mothers day is coming up soon" Huey said "so we're trying to figure out what to do."
" Oh yes it is, isn't it?" Scrooge said, glancing at the calendar.
"So" Huey said. "What should we do?"
"Well I suppose it's customary to give gifts" Scrooge said.
"Have you even celebrated mother's day?" Huey asked he hadn't expected Scrooge to know what exactly to do. But he seemed to have no clue what to do.
"Of course I've celebrated mother's day" Scrooge grasped. "But all my mother ever wants is pictures"
"Pictures?"
"Yes, she can't see us except for every five years." Scrooge said. "So sh always wants us to give her pictures to see what we've been doing"
Maybe mom would like that? Huey wondered but where had uncle Donald put all the pictures?
"Thanks uncle Scrooge"
"Oh hey Dewey" Webby said Dewey had been looking around frantically for one of the adults.
"Hi Webby"
"What have you three been up to all day?" Webby asked if the three of them had been in their room pretty much all day.
"We're trying to figure out what to do for mother's day," he said sitting down next to her by the couch.
"Really" Webby asked excitedly. "That sounds so fun"
"Yeah you wouldn't happen to have any ideas would you?" He asked her.
"I always make granny a card," she said.
"That actually isn't a bad idea" Dewey said.
A look of excitement covered Webbys face. "We could make decorations for it!"
"Yeah I think we got at least some stuff figured out. Let's go find Huey and Louie"
Dewey and Webby were the first ones back in the room. Followed by Huey who wasn't surprised that Webby had now joined them. Finally Louie came holding a cold can of pep.
"Okay so what are our choices?" Huey said.
"Uncle Donald said he and mom used to make grandma breakfast in bed" Louie quickly afford up.
"I always make cards for granny," Webby said.
"And we were thinking of putting up decorations," Dewey said.
"And I think I have the perfect gift idea," Huey told them.
Each made a card the boys made one for their mom. And Webby for her Grandma. Then they all divided up to get everything done in time.
Dewey and Webby were in charge of decorations, all of which they'd be making by hand with Webbys endless supplies of craft supplies.
Louie would help Donald look for the old photo albums and baby picture for the gift.
And Huey with Mrs, Beakley's help would be making the menu.
"Mom" Della woke up with a jerk. She tried desperately to rub the sleep out of her eyes.
"B-oys?" She said not managing to hold back a yawn. "What are you doing?"
"It's mothers day" Dewey said.
"So we made you breakfast in bed" Huey said Lifting up the tray a bit.
"Really?" Della asked the boys all nodded. She could hardly believe she'd actually forgotten. "Thanks"
Huey placed the trey over her lap. They had made her pancakes with fresh berries and whipped cream. Along with coffee to drink.
"Oh this looks delicious" she told them happily she then noticed the three small cards tucked under the plate.
She pulled it up looking at three home made cards from each of her boy's. She moved the food sitting up she couldn't stand because she didn't have her prosthetic leg on yet.
But she pulled the three of them all into a tight hug. "I love you so much," she said.
"Really?" Huey asked.
"Of course" she said with a tear slipping down her face. "Your the best kids anyone could ever dream of"
So the four of them all spent the morning in Della's bed. Laughing and enjoying each other's company.
"This is your present mom" Huey said handing his mom the nicely wrapped gift.
She opened it and was surprised to find a huge book. She opened it looking at the first page. It was covered with pictures of the boys when they were younger.
She flips through the Page's stopping every once and a while. To look longer at some.
"My god" she said sadly. "There's so much I missed"
She was looking at the old picture of Huey's first step. Tears in her eyes.
"I wish I could've been there" she said wistfully
"Been where?" Louie asked.
"With you" she told them.
"Sorry do you not like it?" Dewey asked her worried.
"What?" She asked, surprised. "Why wouldn't I like it?'
"You just seem kinda down," Dewey said.
Della looked at the three of them. "This is the perfect gift" she assured them.
"Hey" Della greeted Donald as she came into his boat. Album tucked under her arm. "Can I talk to you for a minute"
"Yeah of course" he responded. "What is it?"
She motioned to the book she had. "Just wanted to thank you for taking all these pictures"
"Yeah?" He said "your welcomed"
"Yeah there's pictures of everything" she said. "First steps first words… first day of school… everything I missed"
Donald was silent for a moment Della had gone back to looking at the photos.
"I think I wanted to make sure you'd be able to see what it was like." He told her.
"I mean if you ever came back… I wanted you to know what they were like."
"Thanks," she said. "You're the best brother I could ask for."
