The story bellow, its an alternative and even sad version of season 11 finale, inspired on another stoy i wrote in this site and the song Whuthering Heights.

For the ones who don´t watch the show, half the storyline of season 11, was around Murdoch and his wife as they expected a baby, bu for the end of that season, they lost the baby, due the fact that Julia was sterile after having an abortion years before the show start.

This way, this sad AU story, takes place between seasons 11 and 12, with a plot twist.

Hope you enjoy.

THE MESSAGE

On a cold winter night, Detective William Murdoch was awakened by sound of footsteps wandering around the living room. He frowned, knowing that since he lived in a hotel, it wasn´t a break in and no one, not even the dumbest of the bulgers, would be crazy enough to invade an hotel, in the dark cold night of December.

Annoyed then, he got up, put his robe, grab his badge and his gun he kept on the safe and leave to investigate. However, as soon as he step inside the living room, he was surprised to see a woman there, wearing a fancy red dress and looking at the many photographs displayed on the side table together with a few dead flowers and cards.

''Who are you?'' William demanded and slowly, the woman turn to him with a smile on her face.

''Hello William.'' She said.

''L-Liza?'' he gasped paralyzed on his spot, he let go of his gun as he stared at the woman in front of him, his beloved fiancé, who died of consumption many years ago. ''W-what are you doing here?'' he gasped.

''I came to see you, William, thought you would like to see me as well.'' She never stop smile.

He was a catholic man, he believed in heavens, God and even in guardian angels, but on the other hand as a rational man, he didn´t believe in ghost, as he told George Crabtree over and over again, those things didn´t exist, this way, he got baffled upon seeing one in front of him.

''I… Did you came to punish me for something I have done?'' he asked confused and in response, Liza´s smile turn into a serious frown.

''William, I will take your comment as an offense, is that what you think about me? about the woman who loved you? You also loved me one day and yet, you think I can punish you.'' she said angry.

''Oh no, i…'' The detective who always had something to say, became speechless.

''I did came just to see how you are doing since we left and bring a message to you.'' Liza smiled again.

''A message?'' William asked confused and in response, Liza hold his shaken hands.

''They are fine William, they are in a beautiful place, Julia and your child, they are safe and well, as well as I am and we are watching over you.'' Liza said and without words, William sits on the couch and weep, once again reminding what happened just two months ago.

It had been two months since William Murdoch had been living alone on the hotel, two months since he did nothing but work on cases over cases, trying to block the thought that it was also two months since he had lost both his wife and child to fate.

William remembers, he was dismissing a suspect of their current case, when George rush to warn him that their Inspector had rush Julia to the hospital.

After just four months of happiness, while waiting for their so expected child, Julia was rushed to the hospital, bleeding heavy. The doctor tried to do everything he could, but the baby didn´t survive.

Julia cried when William told her the news, they both cried and blamed themselves for what happened, Julia for not been able to give her husband what he wished for and William for anger for let his beloved wife risk her heath, trying to give him a child. Later that same night, once Julia was feeling a bit well, the doctor discharge her and they had gone home. Upon arriving there, William help his wife to bed with a kiss. And she never get up again.

Miss Hart, the coroner, cold as she was, reported the cause of death simply as 'Natural Causes' since her heart just stop. Still, William himself, prefer to think that the cause of his wife´s death was broken heart, broken heart due the loss of their child and the thought of been useless as a wife to her husband, always claiming that he deserved someone better than her.

After a while, William recomposed himself, Liza was sitting next to him, holding his hand and he could feel it solid and even warm above his own hand.

''It was all my fault.'' He whispered with a sob. ''I told her to not put her health in jeopardy, I married her, for her, not to have a child.''

''No, it wasn´t, William,'' Liza explained. ''It was nobody´s fault, you know God have a plan to every one-of us.''

''I love you, Liza, but Julia… she was the love of my life, my soul mate, she made everything around me worth… why she… why she leave me?''

''I´m glad to know you found someone to love after me, William and Julia will be happy with that too, she loved you, more than I did, that's why she didn´t came to give you the message, because she was afraid she couldn´t return,'' Liza said. ''But she also couldn´t bare to stay away from your child.'' She finished with a smile. ''Now William, I did what I came to do, to give you the message and calm your heart, now I have to go and I wish you everything you deserve, my darling.'' She said and the detective lowered his head.

''Liza, can I ask you something?''

''Everything.'' She smiled.

''Promise you take care of them? Of Julia and our child? Please?'' William cried.

''II promise and you will find us again one day, but in the meantime, we will be watching over you.'' Liza kissed him on his forehead before vanished and suddenly, a noise startled the detective.

William Murdoch woke up sweating with the sound of his alarm clock, but with a light heart for the first time in two months. It was all dream, Liza come last night to tell him his wife and child were happy and waiting for him on the beautiful place he call heaven and he smiled knowing they will met again one day for certain. However, the best thing, was that he made Liza promise to take care of his family for him, like a guardian angel.

This way he whispered an 'I love you.' to the picture of Julia on his bedside table and with a kiss on the same photo, he left to get ready for one more day of work.
