Please give this story a chance till at least chapter 4 and then I promise you will end up liking it. Thank you.
Rory was on her way to the office, some days she still couldn't believe that she is working at the New York Times, the dream changed along the way from wanting to be a foreign correspondent to being a featured writer at NYT. But it was everything she wanted, some days she still felt like could have traveled the world if she chose to be a foreign correspondent, but for now, she was happy having a home base in New York City.
6 months into the campaign Rory realized living out of the suitcase was not for her, she enjoyed traveling almost the whole country but it was much less exciting when you were functioning on 5 hours of sleep. Which if you were lucky were on a hotel mattress otherwise on the campaign bus. Rory got sick on the bus, and for a second she thought maybe she was pregnant with Logan"s child, and even though the thought should have scared her it didn't. She felt happy and hopeful for the first time that month. She thought this might bring her and Logan together for the first time after the proposal and at least he would be in her life in some capacity. But it turned out it was just food poisoning. Which gave her a bigger shock than the thought of being pregnant with her ex-boyfriend"s child than it should have. How could Rory Gilmore, child of Lorelai Gilmore be brought on to her knees because of food?
On her way to the office, Rory stopped by at her usual coffee cart,
"Hi Steve, I"ll have my usual".
"Hi Rory, there you go".
Rory reaches her office and is about to start working on her projects for the day when she hears knocking at her door,
"Rory, Matthew has asked everyone for a meeting in 5 minutes in the conference room" Kevin informed Rory.
"Yes, I"ll be there in a second"
"Maybe, we can walk together?"
"Kevin I am not 5. I am not going to get lost. I know where the conference room is" Rory joked.
"Ok Ok. I was just offering" Kevin said laughing and went away.
Kevin Nelson. Rory knew had Kevin had a crush on her, Rory also knew she shouldn't lead on Kevin. In fact, that was the plan until one evening Rory"s grandmother called her
"Hello Rory"
"Hi grandma"
"Are you coming for Friday night dinner this week, I feel like it"s been ages since your grandfather and I saw you last.
"Grandma, we have a work thing on Friday night, I am new here, I haven't made any friends at my office, if I don"t attend the The first unofficial work gathering it"s going to send the wrong message across."
"Oh Rory, I am so sorry, I think you should attend your work thing and we will see you next Friday maybe? I just miss my favorite granddaughter".
"Grandma, I am your only granddaughter".
"That"s all besides the point. Well Rory there is one more thing I want you to know, that I think you should hear from me".
"Umm, Okay".
"Logan is dating another girl in Palo Alto. I met Shira yesterday at Bennett"s charity gala and she went on and on about his new girlfriend and how beautiful she was and how gorgeous their babies were going to be. As if, any baby could be more beautiful than your blue eyes and his blonde hair...".
Rory felt like she couldn't breathe, she felt like the walls of her office were shrinking. Did Logan move on? She knew it had been 18 months. But if they were talking about their babies, it must be serious. Rory felt a big blow to her stomach. She wasn't expecting Logan to be waiting and pinning for her, she didn't have the right to wish that. She had said no to him, not the other way round. But she didn't"t expect to hear this. She felt like she needed to do something, something that would ease the pain she was felt in her chest, something to get over him. She did have sex with other guys on the Obama campaign trail, none of which seemed to fill the hole in her heart, left by Logan Huntzberger. Maybe she needed to start dating again.
"Hello?Rory? Rory?"
"Yes grandma, I am here
"I was asking If doing Friday night dinner once a month or once in two months would be okay with you. Since I now know you have work thing on Fridays now and going back and forth from Hartford to New York can be a long drive".
"I think that should work grandma".
"Wonderful".
"I have to get going. Bye grandma".
"Bye Rory".
Rory spent the rest of the day at the office in a daze. She missed Logan with all of her beings. The only time she wasn't missing Logan was when she was working. So she made it a point to work hard at work. But that became a problem when she was off work. She thought maybe tonight"s Friday night drinks with office colleagues might give her a chance to get out of her head about Logan Huntzberger.
What she didn't plan was for her to get drunk and end up spending the night with Kevin Nelson. Rory knew that Kevin liked her. She knew that from how he looked at her in the office and how he took great interest in whatever she had to say at lunch.
That night all Rory wanted was for her to forget Logan and his new girlfriend. Rory wanted to live in the moment and not in the guilt of saying no to Logan"s Proposal. Rory wanted to be a normal 24 years old, living in New York City living her every single life. Rory wanted to move on. Even though she tried and failed before, she would try again. So she saw Kevin as a willing participant and when the morning came it was time for her to have a difficult conversation with Kevin.
"Good morning", Kevin chirped from his side of the bed.
"Good morning" Rory couldn't believe she fell asleep. She should have left after they were done fucking. But her body was tired after drinking and a full day of work, her resolve broke when Kevin offered her to sleep in.
"So, do you want to maybe grab a bite?"
"Umm, Kevin. Listen what happened last night was a one-time thing. I am not looking to be in a relationship or anything long-term.
"Rory, I am just asking you if you want to grab a bite, not asking you to marry me."
Rory flinched at that.
"Yeah I get that, I was just making myself clear".
"Don"t worry, you were pretty clear last night as well. So, you wanna grab a bite or not?"
"Well, I can"t believe I am saying no to food, but maybe some other time". Rory started getting out of bed, thank god she had the sense last night to wear some of her clothes and go to sleep. Not that Kevin hadn't seen everything already but there was something about the next morning awkwardness she couldn't handle. Maybe it was her lack of experience in this but she was getting better at it.
"So, I"ll see you around in the office?". Kevin asked Rory.
"Yes, I am sure, since we both are in the same department".
That was 4 months ago, since then Rory and Kevin had routinely fallen into bed together. Usually after their Friday Night drinks with office friends. It was just scratching an itch for Rory. She hadn't thought of Logan since her call with her grandma, or rather whenever she thought of Logan, she didn't feel like the air had left her lungs. Work was busy, she was doing good at work. She made good friends with some of her colleagues. She came to think of Tara as a good friend. Tara and Rory were closest in her group of friends which also included Kevin.
Rory got up and made her way to the conference. She felt good about herself at this job. She felt confident at her work, she felt confident in her black stiletto heels, black pencil skirt, and off-white blouse that was a perfect fit for her body.
Rory opened the door to the conference room, "Hello, everyone".
"Rory, please tell Brian what an asshole he is", Tara asked Rory.
"Oh Oh Brian, what trouble are you in with Tara now?" Rory asked Brian while sitting on an empty chair next to Tara.
"She wouldn't shut up about this underground club in the city that she wants access to, not for writing a story but going for a night out. Brian informed Rory.
"All I am saying is if that"s such a problem, we can do both. You can be on duty and we, my friends can get drunk, dance, and have fun". Tara replied happily.
Features editor Matthew enters the room, "Good morning, I hope you all had a good weekend but it"s Monday today so let"s focus on work more and leave drinking and dancing for next weekend. So the first bit of news for which you all here today is, that we will be expanding our media presence and capitalize on the benefits of the Internet. Our stories apart from being top-notch also need to appeal to the readers. We must have content for readers of all ages. That being said we are bringing someone in, who is going to be training you all with how you can upgrade your content and start using better software for your research. He gets here Wednesday. I don"t want any resistance bullshit. We at New York times have always been ahead of the curve and it will be the same when it comes to this internet thing. Logan Huntzberger apart from heading this team will also be operating out of this office to do the same things for other newspapers under HPG".
Rory felt blood rush into her ears, "What?"
Mathew looked at Rory perplexed, "Rory?"
"I meant to ask whose heading the team again, I only mean to ask because we should know more about this person if he is going to come in and train us in this new thing". Stupid.
Everyone looked at Rory like she had grown 2 heads.
Mathew began, " You don"t know Logan Huntzberger? You do know we work under HPG right? The guy has the company name as his surname. Gilmore, I expect more from my writers, you are making me feel like I am running the features department out of a small town in Omaha".
"Oh well, I am sorry. I know who he is. I just... Sorry".
"Anyways, moving on. I guess that was all for today. Let get to work on amazing stories guys". With that Mathew was out the door. And Tara was pulling Rory to the other side of the conference room as everyone was going out.
"What was that?" Tara inquired Rory.
"What was what?" Rory tried to look anywhere but at Tara.
"Rory you don"t get flustered like that, and that was definitely some flustering".
"He is the ex".
"I am sorry, you are acting very weird today. Who is the ex?"
Rory looked at Tara, hoping she would understand, without making her say it out loud.
Realization suddenly hit Tara. "Oh, Oh". Tara said loudly.
Rory hoping her freak out would be over soon.
Tara asked Rory, "He is the ex because of whom you haven't been able to form an emotional long-term bond with any of your fuck friends?"
"Tara do you really have to put it that way?
"I am sorry, I just dint expect that ex to be our boss"s, boss"s, boss"s, boss. And he is coming to town, are you going to be okay? And I am having a bigger meltdown than you did. I am so sorry. Are you okay?"
"I don"t know how to react to this. I am shocked that he will be in my workspace two days from now. The workspace where I feel good and the only place I don"t think about him. How am I not going to able to think about him when he will be in my face all the time".
Tara hugged Rory, "I don't think he will be in your face all the time".
"Maybe I can go on a long leave".
"Rory he is going to be working from this office, the only way will that plan work is if you took a very long vacation, which Mathew will never approve of, it"s ok we will figure something out.
