happy valentine's day
a one-shot set in 5x15 'crazy cupid love' when we saw a scene of rufus picking out jewellery for lily and telling dan about their plans for valentine's that we never got to see, this is my version of what would have happened. warning: it's cheesy as hell!
"oh wow that's beautiful" rufus stated as he held up a beautiful diamond necklace from cartier the jeweler was showing him, the necklace was perfect for lily.
"good morning! what's up with all of this?" dan asked as he came into the penthouse referring to almost a dozen red cartier boxes on the coffee table and a jeweler sitting next to his father
"It's called valentine's day dan" rufus said sarcastically still looking at the beautiful necklace and thinking about how gorgeous it would look on his wife
"I'm picking out some cartier jewellery to give to lily tonight" he continued still not looking up and mentally making a list of all the things he needed to get done for lily's surprise before she gets back
"so where is she? aren't you afraid she is going to see it?" he then pointed towards the stairs that lead to his father and stepmother's room to prove his point
"she's in D.C. at a fundraiser lunch, won't be back until this afternoon but tonight chuck has hooked us up with a huge suite at the empire, pretty romantic right?" rufus handed the necklace back to the jeweler and finally looked up at his son. he had only yesterday asked chuck about the suite and he agreed to give him and his adoptive mother the largest suite in the empire for the night and promised not to tell lily about it as it was a surprise.
"yeah that sounds nice" dan replied
"can I interest you in anything? something for your uh special lady?" the jeweler asked dan trying to make another sale
"me? n-no no I have no special lady this year and honestly, I was just coming by to pick up those bluerays I let lily borrow thought maybe I could give them to blair you know? she is back from her honeymoon alone so..." dan replied dodging the jeweler's question and seeing the concern slowly weaving into his father's face at the mention of blair's name
"so you figured if you uh drop them off maybe she'll ask you to watch one with her?" rufus said as he got up from the sofa and stood next to his son seeing right through what he was trying to do
"well cinema has always been attended as a communal art it's better to watch one with another person" dan shrugged trying to be nonchalant
"she's a married woman now dan it might be time to move on"
"I appreciate the advice dad but I'm just trying to be a good friend really it doesn't mean anything" dan said, an official sign that he did not want to talk about this anymore
"okay" he replied not wanting to argue and watched as dan left the penthouse. rufus sighed heavily and then turned around and told the jeweler to have the necklace he was just looking at be delivered at the penthouse as soon as possible in a fresh piece with the matching diamond earrings and bracelet as well. after the payment was made the jeweler thanked him and left.
rufus still had three hours until lily's flight would land so he quickly got started on his surprise, earlier when they were on skype yesterday, rufus had suggested having a quiet valentine's day and just stay home and watch a movie. he could tell lily didn't see that one coming because usually, he goes all out for valentine's day, their anniversary and any other holiday. still, she smiled and told him that sounded wonderful and she was looking forward to it.
rufus headed to the suite at the empire after the cartier jewellery for lily had arrived and he safely kept it in the lockbox of the suite. he checked the watch on his wrist shit he only had thirty minutes before he had to pick up lily from the airport, he quickly left the empire and went to the loft to get lily's final present. he wanted to give her something of emotional value as well, not just expensive jewelry. he took the gift and quickly headed back to the empire and safely tucked it in the master bedroom of it, he took a final look at the suite and was satisfied that everything looked just the way he wanted it to and headed to the airport.

"hey! I missed you!" lily exclaimed as she saw her husband waiting for her outside with a bouquet of her favourite flowers - casablanca lilies.
"I missed you too!" rufus wrapped his arms around her and kissed her deeply. they both broke the kiss after a minute and rested their foreheads against each others
"are those for me?" lily asked with a smirk
"no, they are for my second wife who I'm supposed to be picking up from the airport" he chuckled and handed her the flowers
lily laughed and accepted the flowers and pecked rufus's lips and gave her luggage to isaac, their driver, who loaded her suitcases in the car while lily and rufus got settled in the back of the limo
on the way to the penthouse, lily told rufus about her trip, the fundraiser, and all the things she had done. she loved traveling even more now after her house arrest, she was so happy and grateful when rufus had the judge grant her an early release. that's why she was a little suspicious when rufus suggested a night in for valentine's day, ever since her house arrest was lifted, they had been going out almost every night for some event, bar, or even something as simple as dinner so why not on valentine's? you're just being paranoid lily, knowing rufus he must have a huge surprise for you back at the penthouse lily thought to herself. either way, she was happy, going out or not, she got to spend this day with her husband and that's all that mattered
"where are the kids?" lily asked as she entered the penthouse which was dead silent, usually there was at least one of their kids here
"I think they all just wanted to steer clear of us on valentines day" rufus said replaying his conversation with charlie in the morning when she said she was going to stay at a hotel tonight not wanting to stay at the penthouse and hear anything she shouldn't
lily laughed and kissed rufus on the lips briefly "I'm gonna go change then we can watch that movie and have dinner" she says and heads upstairs to their room
rufus smiles as he watches her go upstairs and walks over to the desk and gets the dvd of "when harry met sally" one of their favourite movies to watch together and puts it on in the office. he gets a few snacks not wanting to fill up too much because they were about to have dinner soon and grabs a throw blanket from the living room
lily goes into the office and sees rufus waiting for her and smiles softly, she sits down next to him on the couch and he wraps both his arms around her as she rests her head on his chest. rufus picks up the remote and starts the movie and throws the blanket over them
"happy valentine's day" lily says sheepishly and looks up at him
"happy valentine's day lil" rufus meshes their lips together in a sweet kiss, lily smiles at him when they break apart and they both turn their attention back on the movie, feeling safe in each other's arms.

after the movie is done lily leaves their warm embrace and stretches her arms "are you tired?" rufus asks and strokes her hair
"a little I'm starving though do you wanna order from that chinese place down the street?" she replies and gets up to get the phone but rufus stops her
"no wait I have a special surprise for you for dinner" he wraps his arms around her waist and starts leaving butterfly kisses on her neck
"a surprise? I thought you wanted to stay in?" lily says tangling her fingers in his mop of brown hair, rufus stops what he is doing and looks at her, and smiles.
"go get changed then I'll take you to your surprise" he replies ignoring her earlier comment about staying in and kisses her softy
"okay okay! I'll get changed" she giggles as he leaves small kisses all around her face then turns her around and pushes her to their room to get changed
"will you at least tell me what kind of clothes to wear for this 'surprise'?" lily asks him when they enter their bedroom
"actually, I already got a few options for you to chose from" he replies and takes out three huge boutique boxes from under the bed and hands them to her
lily laughs and takes the boxes from him and goes into the bathroom to change while rufus goes in their huge walk-in closet to get his suit on
when lily opens the first box she gasps as she sees a beautiful little black backless dress that looked like it would hit her mid-thigh, it was formfitting and had a v neckline. It was simple but classy and very much lily's style. the box also had matching christian louboutin heels.
lily opened the next box which had a gorgeous red dress, which again like the last one looked like it would hit her mid-thigh, it was a pleated dress with spaghetti straps and was backless and it also came with silver strappy heels which lily adored
the last box had a solid one-shoulder white dress in it which was backless and looked like it would hit a little below her mid-thigh and came with a pair of simple white heels.
lily absolutely loved all three of them and tried each of them and after a few minutes of debating, she settled for the red one, it was simple and looked amazing on her, it was even red for valentine's day. she put the dress and heels on and dabbed on a little bit of makeup, she decided to let her hair stay down and natural. when she headed out of the bathroom she saw rufus sitting on their bed in a simple black suit and pants with a white shirt and no tie. his jaw dropped when he saw her and lily blushed at his appreciative gaze. she headed over to him and sat on his lap and kissed him passionately on the lips
"thank you for the dresses I loved them" she says after they pull apart
"you deserve the best and you look gorgeous" he kissed her hair and wrapped his arms around her
"you look quite dapper yourself" she fixes his collar a lit bit and rests her head on his shoulder
"so where are we going all dressed up?" she asks him
rufus looks down at her and tucks a stray piece of blonde hair behind her ear "I'm afraid that's a surprise mrs humphrey"
lily pouts at him and rufus laughs at her expression "before we go I have something for you" lily says and gets off his lap and opens her suitcase and takes out a white bag from it
"you didn't have to get me anything" he says as he takes the white bag from her
"you got me such beautiful dresses and now this mysterious surprise this is nothing compared to it" she pushes the bangs out of his eyes and urges him to look inside the bag
"It doesn't matter what you got me lil you know I'll love it" he said and takes out a green box from rolex, he looks at lily and she smiles at him and tells him to open it
"lily it's amazing! I love it!" he says when he sees an all-black rolex watch, it was neither too big nor too flashy exactly rufus's style
"look at the back!" lily tells him with excitement, rufus chuckles and takes out the watch and turns it over, and sees that's it's actually engraved
to my always and forever I love you - lily
rufus smiled at it and ran his thumb over the engraved message, he took the watch he was wearing out and clasped on the new one "I love it lil and you" he said and cupped both her cheeks and brought her lips to his and kissed her softly
"I'm glad but there is one more thing in there" she points to the bag and rufus laughs in amusement and takes out a white envelope
"what's this?" he asks her
"open and find out" lily replies
he opened the white envelope and gasped as he saw dozens of photos from their time together as teenagers, he went through the stacks of photos feeling mesmerized and nostalgic
"feeling nostalgic?" she asked with a smirk
"no, nauseous" rufus replied with a smug smile throwing her the same line she had said to him at a party five years ago
lily giggles remembering that night and kissed him on the cheek, rufus keeps the photos back in the white bag along with the rolex box "I loved it I had no idea you still had these"
"I found them in the attic along with my camera and thought it would make a good gift" she nuzzles their noses together and laughs
"that it did, now what do you say we head out?" he asks her and gets up offering her his hand, lily intertwined their fingers and they both make their way downstairs. lily grabs her white clutch and they both walk hand-in-hand to the limo.

Isaac, their driver, already knew to take them to the empire as rufus had told him before picking up lily at the airport so she still had no idea where they were going. after a few minutes, the car stopped and isaac opened the door for them
"the empire?" lily asked as they both stepped out of the car
"I got us a suite for the night" he told her and pulled her into the hotel
when they were at the door of the suite rufus stopped and grinned at lily "I think I have a wife to carry over the threshold" she laughed as rufus picked her up, bridal style, and opened the door. lily was shocked at what she saw, the whole suite was lit by only candles, there was soft music playing and there was a candlelit dinner table with all of her favourite foods and her favourite flowers in the vase, making the room smell like lilies.
"It-it's beautiful, thank you" lily spoke up after a moment with tears in her eyes, rufus held her even closer and kissed her tears away "don't cry sweetheart" he whispered softly in her ear and carried her to the table and placed her on one of the two chairs, he bent down to be on her level and flicked away the remaining tears with his thumb
"this is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me" she said her voice cracking
"you deserve this and so much more you have no idea how amazing and beautiful you are, I love you" he started running his hand through her soft blonde hair and gave her a warm smile
"I love you too, so much" she kissed him passionately on the lips and wrapped her arms around his neck, rufus responded immediately and encircled her waist in his arms. after a minute they broke apart panting for breath and giggled, rufus gave her a quick peck on the lips and started walking towards the closet
"where are you going?" she asked as she watched him open the lockbox in the closet. he didn't reply instead got the box from cartier out and sat across lily and handed her the red box
"for you" he said and urged her to open it, lily smiled big at him and opened the red box and gasped as she saw the beautiful jewellery
"rufus you didn't have to get me this! you already did so much for me" she said still in shock
"what did I just tell you? you deserve this, you're the best thing that has ever happened to me and I love showering you with gifts and affection" he headed over to her chair and took out the necklace and clasped it on her neck and kissed her temple.
lily touched the diamonds with her hands and smiled softly "well it is gorgeous, thank you" she kissed him passionately and watched him go sit across from her at the table with the same goofy expression
"I feel bad now, what I got for you doesn't even compare to this" she said referring to the amazing night and gifts he had given her
"don't feel bad honey, it doesn't matter, I loved the gifts you had given me and the fact we get to spend this day together is what makes me happy" he took her hand in his own and kissed it right at the spot where she wears her wedding ring. she smiled at him wondering how on earth she had deserved someone so great and loving like rufus.
"now enough with the mushy stuff! let's eat, it's all your favourite!" rufus said and they both laughed and started eating the delicious food
"how did you even pull this off?" lily asked him
"well, when we were watching that movie I had the staff set it up exactly like this and chuck was more than happy to give us a suite for the night"
"and the dresses? did serena help you or has your fashion sense actually improved humphrey?" she said jokingly
"I picked them all out on my own thank you very much' he replied and pointed his fork at her and grinned
"well I'm impressed" she said as she took another sip of her wine

throughout dinner, they both were laughing, bantered with one another and just enjoyed each others company. after they were done rufus grabbed lily's hand and pulled her into the master bedroom.
he crashed his lips on hers and they were both kissing each other passionately, rufus started a wet trail from her lips to her neck and started leaving sloppy kisses there. lily moaned and tangled her fingers in his soft brown hair, after a minute she started to unbutton his shirt but rufus stopped her
"what's wrong?" she asked him
"I have one last thing to give you" he said and headed over to the bathroom and came out with what looked to be a huge painting but it was covered up with a cloth
"what is it?" lily went towards rufus and touched the cloth over it
"take the covering off and find out" he replied
lily smiled at him and took the cloth off the painting and was in utter shock at what she saw
"I remembered you telling me about your run-in with robert mapplethorpe and how he had painted this of you and how bart had gotten it hidden so I tracked it down for you" he said and set the panting down on the couch in the master bedroom
"h-how did you find it?" she finally spoke
"I had bex find it for me" he said with a shrug. Instead of replying lily wrapped her arms around his neck and held him close to herself, rufus wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her shoulder. they stayed in that embrace for a bit then lily crashed her lips on his and they both immediately resumed to where they had left off
"thank you" she stated between kisses, rufus nodded and picked her up and placed her on the bed and climbed on top of her, they both slowly undressed each other and lily showed him exactly how thankful she was for him and for everything that he had done for her.
when it was over he held her close to himself and kissed her temple as they both were about to drift off to sleep
"happy valentine's day lil" he said to her and kissed her hair
"happy valentine's day" she replied and heard his breathing even out indicating he had gone off to sleep, lily kissed rufus's cheek then drifted off to sleep herself feeling safe and warm in her soulmate's arms.
