Author's note- I got the idea for this story from ShamyShenaigan's The Big Prompt Theory- specifically chapter 70. If you're looking for ideas, I'd recommend checking it out.
Amy paced her parents' living room, growing more frustrated the longer the conversation with her mother continued. "I don't understand why you couldn't wait to find a nice man before starting a family. How are you going to explain this to your co-workers? What would your grandmother think of you spending your inheritance on this? She'd never approve of this."
"I knew you were going to react this way. We have that agreement about my dating life because you don't want me to end up alone. I will always have someone now. It will be me and this baby together forever. My co-workers won't care. They don't need to know how I ended up with this baby. I can let them all think it was a one-night stand," Amy spouted back at her mother. Mrs. Fowler opened her mouth but was cut off by her daughter again. "I think Grandma would be thrilled to have a great-grandchild. Grandma always told me to make my own happiness. I love my work, but I've always wanted a family of my own. She would be proud of me for deciding to start a family without waiting to find a man. It could be years before I find someone I want to start a family with, I don't want to wait any longer to, so I did what I had to do to make that happen."
"Amy, I know this is happening and that you've made the decision to have a baby by yourself, but I wish you had talked to me before going through with this. You don't know anything about this baby's father. What if you chose someone that is crazy and you're stuck dealing with a crazy child?" Mrs. Fowler questioned.
Finally sitting down, Amy sighed. "I know plenty about the man whose sperm I chose. I spent hours and days going through donor profiles before making a decision. The man I chose has an IQ over 180, has a PhD, and works at a local university. For all I know, he could be working with me at UCLA. He's over six feet tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. Once the baby's older, he or she will be able to decide if they want to look him up I will leave that decision completely up to them."
Rubbing her temples, Mrs. Fowler knew she needed some time to process what she had learned that evening. "I think it's time for you to leave. We can discuss this more another time."
"Good night, mother," replied Amy as she gathered her purse and jacket. "I'm going to tell dad goodbye."
Amy found her father outside. He decided to give his wife and daughter some space and retreated to the backyard. "She'll come around, pumpkin. This wasn't what she was expecting when you said you had big news for us when you asked to come over for dinner tonight. She thought you were going to tell us you were seeing someone. I know you'll be a wonderful mother," Larry told Amy. "You can call me anytime for anything, you got that? Even if it's just to pick up ice cream, I will drop everything for you."
"It's nice to know I have at least one person who supports me with this."
"She's always taken longer when it comes to you making major life changes. Remember how she reacted when you said you were going to Harvard? She was sure you were going to change your mind and move back home before your first semester was over. After she realized you were happy there and wouldn't move home until after graduation, she was so proud of you, telling everyone about how her daughter was going to Harvard," he reminded his daughter.
Six months later
Larry Fowler sat in the chair in the corner of the hospital room, watching Amy with her newborn son. "I'm so proud of you, pumpkin. It's only been two hours since he was born but I can tell you are going to be an amazing mother to that little boy."
"Thanks, dad," sniffled Amy.
"Hey, what's with the tears?" he asked as he moved towards the bed. Larry had been waiting for this to happen. Mrs. Fowler still hadn't come around to support Amy in her pregnancy or new motherhood. Amy had thought that her mother would show up at the hospital, eager to meet her grandson.
Continuing to look at the newborn nestled in her arms, Amy wiped the tears from rolling down her cheeks. "I just love him so much. I can't imagine ever ignoring him like mom has done to me. If he came to me after finishing college and having a successful career and said he was having a baby and was going to be a single father, I would do everything I could to support him. I thought you said she would come around? She's barely spoken to me since the night I told you I was having a baby."
Wrapping his arms around his daughter and grandson, Larry attempted to soothe his daughter. "She will, it's just taking her a lot longer than you and I would like. I know you were holding out hope that she would be here today, but you should know that she has been texting me for updates all day. I sent her a picture of Max; she said he looks like you. I'm sure her attitude will change once she meets him in person."
"I don't think he looks like me, aside from the dark hair. He doesn't have my nose or chin. His eyes are more blue than green. Maybe he'll look like me when he's older, but I don't see it right now. Mom isn't answering when I call and hasn't responded to my texts in months. Can you please let her know that I want her to be a part of Max's life? I know mom and I have always had a difficult relationship, but I know she will love being a grandmother if she's willing to give me a chance to show her this was the right decision for me?"
Author's note- I know Sheldon and everyone else wasn't in this chapter, but they'll be in the next one, I promise. I just wanted to set up a bit of background for Amy before I get into the rest of the story.
