Author Notes: Hello, everyone! My daughter and I recently fell down a black hole called Word of Honor (山河令) and have yet to resurface. If you enjoy Chinese dramas like The Untamed where beautiful men with flowing hair, long robes and tragic pasts cast longing looks and pretty smiles at their beloved, then give Word of Honor a shot (It. Has. Flirting. Like. Whoa!) and thank me later :)
When this was written, we hadn't seen all the episodes yet so things may be a bit off. Hope it's still enjoyable :)
Summary: Zhou ZiShu wakes up to a new day and the beautiful sight of a sleeping Wen KeXing.
Rating: T
Disclaimer: The Word of Honour drama series is based on the BL novel Faraway Wanderers written by Priest.
- Story Start -
The first few rays of the morning sun slipped inside the window and began to lighten the bedroom.
Zhou ZiShu rose up on one elbow, propping his cheek on his fist and paying no mind to the blankets slipping off his shoulder. He waited for the moment the sun's creeping rays would reach their bed and pay gentle homage to his sleeping soulmate.
A soft sigh borne of wistfulness, happiness and a bone deep gratitude left his lips.
It had been, in retrospect, ridiculously easy to fall in love with Wen KeXing.
Zhou ZiShu knew it would have been next to impossible to do so in the past, as the reserved, unbending leader of the Window of Heaven; burdened by his martial brothers' deaths, governed by the group's strict rules, and restrained by his servitude to Prince Jin.
When Zhou ZiShu finally left the group by taking on the Torment of the Seven Nails, it was with the knowledge that death would come for him in a couple of years. Unshackled by his past responsibilities after ten long years, he resolved to enjoy what little time he had left, drinking and roaming wherever he wished under a disguise.
Falling for Wen KeXing's sparkling charisma and outrageous flirting was never part of the plan.
But like everything else he did, Wen KeXing put his whole heart into pursuing him. Ignoring him was impossible; ZiShu found himself smiling half the time and rolling his eyes the other half.
How could he ignore Wen KeXing when he was there at every turn?
Offering free room and board when ZiShu and ChengLing were exhausted. Catching ZiShu with one strong arm when he stumbled after exerting himself. Encouraging ChengLing with glee when he failed to get ZiShu to take him on as disciple. Playing a soothing mantra on his flute the whole night to help the two of them heal and rest.
Add to that his gorgeous smiles, his colourful robes, his penchant for reciting classical poems and bestowing enough lavish compliments to turn anyone's head... well!
It had been, in retrospect, a given that ZiShu would be lost the moment he met the bold gaze of this charismatic, gallant man with the bright eyes, brilliant smile and lethal fan, who was so bent in making ZiShu believe he was just a rich philanthropist and an all round good man.
But now, after realising their shared past, after knowing the truth about Wen KeXing's torment, stubbornness and driving thirst for revenge; after experiencing the depth of his generous, loving heart, coupled with that almost childlike enthusiasm...
Oh, how could he not be in love with Wen KeXing?
If he wasn't already, ZiShu knew he would fall for him every single day for the rest of their lives.
Unnoticed by him, the sunlight had crept up their bed and reached Wen KeXing. With a blink, ZiShu saw his slumbering soulmate gilded in the softest gold. He let his eyes rove over beloved features - that perfect brow, noble nose and pink lips that always seemed to hold a smile. As if his gaze had weight, long eyelashes soon fluttered, revealing hazy depths that warmed with deep affection.
"A-Xu, what're you staring at?" Wen KeXing's voice was rough with sleep.
ZiShu's smile widened, partly because it was something so very easy to do now and partly because it was what he had constantly asked Wen KeXing in the past, perplexed at first by such open admiration, and then later, disarmed by it.
"What do you think, Lao Wen?" He replied. "At my soulmate, of course."
He lowered his head to touch his lips to Wen KeXing's smiling ones.
It had been, in retrospect, ridiculously easy to fall in love with Wen KeXing. As easy as breathing, as living and loving, and drinking wine from the same, shared cup of life.
