December 21, 1991.
Troy, New York.
The tires of a dark Buick LaSabre squealed against the ice covered pavement as it barreled down the empty streets. The tension inside the car was high, all four occupants sat with their jaws clenched tight.
It had been six days since the untimely death of Howard and Maria Stark. While most of the world was moving on from the car crash that killed the billionaire genius, all who worked for Stark Industries were feeling the heat. Raymond Forega was no exception to that. The older man had worked with Howard for over two and a half decades. The two had just finished the first phase of one of their biggest projects together yet—the revival of Project Rebirth. And that project was exactly the cause he, his family, and a high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D agent were barreling down the empty streets of New York in the middle of the night.
Alexandra Fortega anxiously toyed at the fabric of her coat. She took residence in the back seat of her fathers car. Her mother, Eleanor Fortega, sat anxiously beside her, glaring at the speeding road ahead.
"Such a brilliant mind. Too young." Alexander Pierce sighed from the drivers seat as he continued his conversation with the Fortega patriarch. "But you know, this is what he would have wanted. It's too dangerous. Especially if it falls into the wrong hands."
"I agree." Raymond nodded. According to Pierce, a high ranking member of the elite organization S.H.I.E.L.D, word had gotten out that Raymond and Howard had worked on Project Rebirth. When Alexander Pierce walked through the front door of Alexandrea's Queens home, it hadn't been the first time someone had mentioned Project Rebirth to her. The project had been kept severely under wraps at Stark Industries. Howard Stark had been dead set on creating a serum that mimicked the one given to the late Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. It enhanced the body and mind, and Stark vowed to get it right. Alexandra had vetted a few Army officials who were willing participants for her father and Stark. She couldn't help but have an uneasy feeling in her stomach each time she worked on the job. Project Rebirth was dangerous, it was more than obvious. Not everyone could turn out like Captain America. There was the highly possible chance of something going awry.
Pierce and the Fortega family continued enroute to S.H.I.E.L.D's upstate base to deliver the last vial of the serum Raymond had kept on his person. The five other vials had been kept with Howard, and their current whereabouts were in question. Although, Raymond was convinced they had been destroyed in the car crash that had taken the life of his co-worker. The car had been totaled, no one and nothing could have survived the crash.
"I almost forgot to mention. I had my assistant slip a certain someones application on my desk last week." Pierce piped up. The young brunette skeptically scanned over the mans expression, wondering how someone with such authority got his hands on her S.H.I.E.L.D application she submitted last month.
"Application?" Eleanor questioned.
"For S.H.I.E.L.D?" Raymond added. Alexandra gritted her teeth together. There was a reason she hadn't mentioned her application for the organization to her parents. They were dead-set on her applying to the United States Military to follow in their original steps.
"Yeah." She mumbled. "I didn't think they'd see it." Alexander let out a hefty laugh.
"We wouldn't see it? Top ten percent at NYU, a solid job at Stark Industries, and on top of that you grew up surrounded and training with the military. I'd say thats an impressive resume, Ms. Fortega." Alexandra shifted uncomfortably as Pierce glared at her through the rearview mirror. She was only an assistant at Stark Industries, she didn't categorize that as impressive. "I can see it now, Ray. Alexander and Alexandra working side by side. Dream team." Pierce laughed.
"We'll talk about that later, Alex." Raymond nodded. "Pierce, how far is this base?"
"Should be coming up soon." The agent nodded.
"I'm thinking maybe we should get Obadiah on the phone. Fill him in on what's going on." Raymond thought, reaching down and grabbing the bulky Motorola out of his briefcase.
"I don't think that's necessary. It's late." Pierce disagreed. A bright light shining in the reflection of the rearview mirror caught Alex's attention.
"I know but he's acting CEO, he's got to meet us at the base and get caught up. He's completely in the dark on this." Alex turned in her seat, seeing a dark car trailing closely behind them. Her brows furrowed as she expected the car to turn off at the exit before the bridge, but it followed their car onto the Congress Street Bridge. Who else could be out this late? She could hear the clicking of number buttons as Raymond began typing in a number to the phone. Alex faced front in her seat, beginning to wonder if it was her nerves getting the best of her.
"I really wish you didn't do that." Pierce loudly sighed, the car slowing down as he reached to his side. The world seemed to fall in slow motion as Alex watched Pierce pull a gun from his holster and point it up to her father. The agent cocked his head, pursing his lips.
"Hail Hydra." He hissed, pulling the trigger. Eleanors scream ripped out in the car as a bullet went straight through Raymonds forehead, blood splattering throughout the car. Pierce turned towards the backseat, aiming his revolver at Eleanor. Before she had the chance to cry out, a bullet ripped through her chest. Her body fell back limply. Alex gasped loudly knowing what was coming next. Pierce was Hydra and one of the most dangerous projects was about to fall right into his hands. In a split second decision, the girl grabbed onto the door handle and swung it open as another pop went off in the car. Snatching the metal briefcase at her feet, she tumbled out of the moving car and onto the pavement. Her body burned as her skin skimmed across the icy pavement. She cried out, her body finally rolling to a stop. The sounds of squealing tires screamed in her ears. Her eyes ripped open, seeing the taillights of the Buick burn red as the car came to a stop. The car behind theirs shined its bright headlights on the girl as they too came to a screeching halt. A million thoughts raced through her head—did that just happen? Was this real? Pierce was Hydra, how could that be? She was convinced she was currently in one of her nightmares. The stinging sensation in her shoulder protested otherwise. Alex skidded up from the pavement, her hands and clothing ripped and bloody. She grabbed the briefcase containing her fathers project and began running to the other car. Two occupants exited the other vehicle, a chorus of guns cocking echoed in the quiet winter air.
"Don't make this more complicated than it is, Alexandra." Pierce called, advancing towards her.
"How could you! They trusted you!" She screamed, tears welling in her eyes. This had been a trap. The danger Pierce warned of had been false. He was the real danger.
"Only what was necessary." He shook his head. Pierce looked at the two agents, nodding to them both.
"Hail Hydra." One of them responded, shoving his gun back into the holster and advancing towards the terrified girl.
"Hand it over." Pierce directed. The younger agent reached for the briefcase in Alex's grasps. She swung the metal case with all the strength she had left in her body against the agent's face. Her shoulder screamed out in protest. She lifted a knee, jamming it into his groin. As he doubled over, she jammed her elbow into the agents neck. He grunted, dropping the gun as she dropped the briefcase. The two proceeded to go after each others items. Alex grabbed the gun, aiming for the other agent standing by the car. Several shots rang out as Alex continuously pulled the trigger blindly, finally hitting the agent in the neck on the sixth try. The Hydra agent beside her grabbed onto her body and the two began struggling. Alex dropped the gun as the Agent punched her in the face. The sound of her nose cracking echoed in the air. She began stumbling back as the agent continued to hit her body. Another pop rang out in the air and Alex immediately felt pressure fill her stomach muscles. The agent threw Alex back into the metal barrier of the bridge, only to charge at her once more. The agent pushed her weakening body backwards. Alex quickly grabbed onto the man tightly as she tipped over the metal barrier, sending the two of them into the deep icy depths of the Hudson River below.
Alexander Pierce scoffed, hearing the plunge of bodies at the bottom of the river. He looked over to the body of one of his agents bleeding out onto the concrete, rolling his eyes in response. The car door opened, another man sleekly slipping out of the back.
"Clearly someone has a flair for dramatics." Pierce scoffed once more. "Put it in the trunk." He ordered. The agent picked up the briefcase from the ground, placing it in the trunk of the Hydra owned BMW. He unlocked the case, revealing a vial of blue liquid surrounded by padding. "And go get her. I don't have all day." Pierce ordered.
April 23, 2015.
Hydra Base, Siberia.
The hissing of a cryostasis chamber echoed throughout the facility. Smoke billowed from the container as it cleared the air. Her body was cold. Stiff. To the human eye, she looked dead. She should have been. There were very few who could survive being locked in a chamber that lowered their body temperature to almost negative 460 degrees. They dragged her defrosting body to the next room, throwing her down into a chair and immediately restraining her. She could barely open her eyes as senses began to come back slowly. First came the tingling in her fingers. She could just begin to feel her damp defrosting hair sticking to her icy skin. Her chest slowly began to rise the slightest amount as her eyes rolled in the back of her head. Her thoughts were clouded. She had no clue who she even was.
"задыхаться" Suffocate. The tingling sensation in her fingers was soon replaced with pressure as her bones locked together. She cried out, the void feeling in her head flooded over with anger.
"уединенный" Solitary. Electricity began flowing through her body as the soldier pulled down a handle.
"домой" Homeward. She cried out once more, squeezing her eyes shut as her brain felt as if it was being stabbed with ice picks. Rage consumed her.
"одиннадцать" Eleven.
"Безопасный" Safe.
"наказание" Punishment.
"Пожар" Fire.
"двадцать четыре" Twenty four.
"тюрьма" Prison.
"заказывать" Order.
Her body stilled as the room fell silent. The rabid anger coursed through her veins. Calmly, she opened her eyes, revealing the lifeless brown orbs. The Hydra agent in front of her stared with a grin.
"Soldier." Brock Rumlow greeted.
"миссия готова." Mission ready.
