This will mostly be following the MCU timeline and events, with mutants and other Marvel characters added in.
The last thing Whitebeard remembered was standing on the beach of Marineford. He remembered the death of his son Ace, and the bitter taste of defeat. He could remember going out to fight alone, giving the rest of his children the chance to escape. In the end, his only regrets were that he couldn't save Ace, and that he couldn't even take some of the Admirals down with him.
He died on his feet, standing tall before the world, strong even unto death. He couldn't ask for a better death than that, though he wished the events leading up to it had been more in his favor. A final last stand is always much sweeter after victory. He trusted Marco to get his fellow brothers and sisters to safety, though he knew this was the end of the Whitebeard Pirates. While he loved all of them equally, the only one of his children with the potential to stand up to Kaido and Big Mom was Ace. He had hoped the boy would succeed him one day, but alas, such dreams were ashes now.
So the Strongest Man in the World closed his eyes for the last time. He never expected them to open again, but open they did. They opened in a strange white room, his body far smaller than he could even remember it being.
"It's a boy, mam." A voice said, holding him out.
"My baby boy." A softer voice whispered, cradling him in their arms. "His name is Lance. Lance Alvers."
This new world he was in was strange. The technology was far ahead of pretty much everything he had seen on the Grandline. The very idea of satellites and computers was exciting to him, but in a way it was kind of sad. There was nowhere left to discover on this world, no grand adventures to the unknown to be had. He could see a map of the entire world in seconds on the marvel this world called a smart-phone, and it would even give him directions to get there!
The weather tended to be much more stable here too. The seasons came and went by the time of the year, all four in a row every year like clockwork. It was strange to think he couldn't just go from one island to the next, and go from summer to winter. That was another thing! There was so much land! They said the world's surface was over seventy percent water, but he called bullshit. These massive landmasses called "continents" broke up the ocean into seven different seas. Imagine that, the seas divided by land instead of the Red Line and the Grand Line.
Madness, sheer madness.
In the end it didn't matter, the sea called to him. It didn't matter what world he was in, what his name was, whether there was a One Piece to find or not. None of that mattered to him, he had only two great loves in his life. The sea and his family. He could reclaim the sea easily enough, but his family was forever lost to him. That had been a hard pill to swallow, and it took most of his childhood years to get over it.
In a way he had been lucky that his parents were never the most attentive. His mother had tried for the first few years, but the booze had a strong hold on her. It had a stronger hold on his father, and the man was a violent drunk as well. He never struck Lance until he was six years old. The first time it had happened been a simple accident, Lance had knocked over his father's beer on the side table, and the man had given him a black eye for it. The stupid drunk was lucky that Lance had no wish to end up in Foster Care, or he would have turned him into pulp then and there.
He may have been reborn, but he still had his power somehow, and even better there was no more curse of the sea. He had forgotten what it was like to swim. He also had access to his haki, he had had to rebuild his strength and skill in it, but at least he still had it. As it was, he had just used a tiny amount of Conquerors Haki to knock his old man out.
The drunk bastard had left him alone after that, and it had only taken one more lesson before he learned to not take it out on his mother instead. He supposed that was why his old man went out for "scratchers" one day around his tenth birthday, and never came back. His mother did her best to provide for the both of them, but if it hadn't been for Lance stepping up to get some money himself, he had no doubt they would have ended up on the street.
At first he just did odd jobs around town. Mowed a few neighbors lawns, helped another one stack some firewood, and would run errands for a few of the local shopkeepers. However it was a sheer accident that brought him to his next job. Even here in Boise, Idaho there were muggers and various thugs and criminals. One such thug tried to hold him up in an alley, and Lance hadn't even needed to use Armament or his Gura Gura powers to knock him out. The people here were so weak and fragile, and it seemed no one had grasped the needed inner strength to break the barriers of their physical bodies.
That or none of them knew how. Either way, even at the age of twelve Lance was now strong enough to lift a car without using any of his powers, so taking out some two-bit thugs was easy. After that he would go out into the city almost every night, using his Observation Haki to track down thugs and mug them for money. He usually didn't even bother to fight them, just using Conqueror's Haki to knock them out as he approached. There were now dozens of legends of ghosts and demons in the Boise criminal underground, and Lance always got a kick out of it whenever he heard them.
Lance was sixteen years old now, on his way to the school. His mom had skipped town a year ago, leaving a note saying that she was apologizing for being a terrible mother, and that he would be better off without him around. He had never bothered to inform the police about it, figuring that he was better off just keeping his head down until he was eighteen. He had some money saved up, and he was planning on getting himself a ship and even better, a crew. A family.
"Hey Lance!" A bubbly voice greeted him as he walked up the stairs into the school.
"Gurarara! Kitty! It is great to see you!" Lance exclaimed in a booming voice, sweeping the girl into a massive hug. "How are you today?"
"I'm doing fine Lance, how are you? Are we, like, still on to study after school today?" Kitty asked him, smiling in greeting to her friend.
"Of course! Wouldn't miss it!" Lance replied, giving his friend a wink.
Kitty just smiled and slapped him on the arm, both of them walking quietly down the hallway. As they walked, Lance could tell that Kitty's smile had gotten a bit strained, and her eyes were slightly narrowed as if she was worried about something.
"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked, bumping her shoulder lightly.
"It's nothing, Lance. I'm fine, really!" Kitty said, brightening her smile.
"Well, if you're sure. You know you can talk to me about anything." He told her.
"I know Lance, I'm fine. Really." She said with a nod.
"Alright then." Lance said, grabbing the last of his books from his locker. "Now let's get to class before we are late."
The rest of the day passed by normally, and Lance struggled to stay awake through the boring classes. He had fought wars against a government that spanned the entire world! He had destroyed entire islands, toppled mountains with just a step. Why the hell did he need to know who the King of Britain was in 1776? The man was long dead, and Lance almost wished to join him.
As he was walking over to Kitty's locker, he paused for a moment, and his face melted into a frown. There was no one in the hallway, school had ended a bit ago and the students had already cleared out. Thing was, Kitty wasn't there either, and she had flaked on studying with him before without letting him know. Bringing up his Observation, his frown transformed into a thunderous look of anger.
Someone had locked Kitty in her own locker.
Oh boy, someone was going to pay big time for that one. But as Lance marched down the hallway towards the locker, he froze in shock. Kitty had phased straight through the locker door, landing on the floor in front of him. She seemed to just sit there a moment, trying to catch her breath. She looked around, and caught sight of him, and she immediately began to panic.
"Lance! Oh...uhh...hi! Ummm, did you, like, see anything? Who am I kidding, of course you did! It's not what it looks like though! I mean, it is, but…" She rambled on.
"Woah, calm down Kitty. It's all gonna be alright. If I were to take a guess, I'd say those girls who are always picking on you shoved you in the locker, and you somehow phased through it." Lance said, stroking his chin in thought. "Only question is, how did you get powers? Or did you always have them?"
"No! Like, I mean, I didn't always have them, I guess? Like, I had a bad dream last night and I, like, went through the floor somehow and, like, woke up when I hit the floor in front of my parents. That's, like, the first time it ever happened!" She said, talking so quickly that Lance almost had trouble understanding it.
"You didn't eat some bad fruit yesterday by any chance?" Lance just had to ask. He didn't think there were Devil Fruits in this world, as surely he would have heard of them by now, but he didn't know of any other way to wake up one day and be able to walk through walls. Focusing his Observation on her, he could feel a slight difference to her from the day before. Her spirit had somehow gotten stronger, a little more dense, but it also seemed kind of see through somehow. He supposed it came from her abilities, but it didn't tell him anything about how it happened.
"It's alright Kitty, I got a secret too, wanna know what?" Lance whispered to her conspiratorially.
"What?"
"I got powers too." He said, holding out a half empty water bottle. He held up the tip of his pointer finger, and it was glowing white. Putting his finger against the water bottle, the water inside immediately began to toss and churn, splashing all around as if someone was violently shaking it.
Kitty just stared at the water bottle, stunned, before meeting Lance's eyes.
"So, you're just like me?" She asked, half in wonder and half in relief.
"Yep, except I've had powers for as long as I can remember." He told her with a shrug.
"WHAT! You had powers all this time and you never told me!?" Kitty screeched at him.
"Woah, hey, keep it down why don't you?" Lance answered, "And I am not my powers Kitty. There really wasn't much reason to tell you, and I didn't want you to worry about anything or even be jealous. You didn't exactly want to tell me about your powers either."
"Well, like, I guess so. But don't think you are getting off easy, Mister! You are getting me ice cream, and then walking me home!" Kitty demanded, poking him in the chest.
"Gurarararara!" Lance laughed. "You got yourself a deal Kitty!"
Jean Grey walked out of the Blackbird with Scott, Logan, and Ororo. Also known as the X-Men: Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Wolverine, and Storm. They were going to meet a new mutant that the Professor had said Cerebro detected that morning. While normally they would only send two of them, one student and one of the teachers, Professor Xavier had said that he had detected the Brotherhood moving towards the girl as well.
Jean knew that a young girl from Boise would not do well in the Brotherhood of Mutants. They were a mutant supremacist group, founded by the powerful mutant Magneto. They believed mutants were the next step of evolution, and that normal humans should either bow down or be destroyed. Magneto believed this was the only way for mutant-kind to be accepted by humanity, but the Professor disagreed. Professor Xavier taught that peaceful coexistence was the path to the future, and had founded the X-Men to counter those mutants that would abuse their powers.
Using her telepathy, she managed to track down where the girl was. Mutants always had a different flavor of mind, as she put it, and so were usually pretty easy for most telepaths to pick out of the crowd. What was interesting was that the boy she was with, both of them apparently walking home while eating ice cream, was a mutant as well. One that the Professor hadn't noticed. She went to try and go into his mind, having only skimmed the surface of the girl's mind so far, but was immediately thrown out.
The thing was, the Professor had told her, mutants with abnormally strong powers are usually affected by them in odd ways. Logan's mind was incredibly difficult to read, as the feral nature of his powers manifested in his astral form. Quite simply, trying to read his mind was like trying to talk to an actual wolverine, not likely to get far and very likely for you to get hurt. While the Professor was skilled enough to still get into Logan's mind in an attempt to track down some of his lost memories, Jean was not that skilled yet.
Storm was another mutant that was hard for telepaths to read. While they could breach the surface, to piggyback off her senses or communicate telepathically, even Professor Xavier could not get very far into Ororo's mind. Storm's power over the weather had practically turned her into an avatar for Mother Nature, and it was like lightning and gale force winds protected her mind.
This boy's mind was like that in a way, as if he had become the very avatar of what his powers represented. She wasn't sure what those powers were, not being as skilled as the Professor in reading someone's astral form, but when she tried to go into his head it was like a thousand jackhammers had all descended on her mental probe. Before she had retreated, however, she could have sworn that she felt another power rise to the surface within his mind. Like a dragon sensing an intruder in its lair, or a massive tidal wave come to wash everything away. It was honestly frightening, and she wasn't sure how to describe what she felt.
"They're this way." Jean eventually said, motioning down one the streets. "The boy that is with her, he is a mutant as well. A strong one too, at least as strong as Storm."
"How'd he get by the Professor?" Asked Cyclops.
"Cerebro isn't perfect, Scott. It can only tell when someone awakens a mutation, not when someone is born with one. He must have had his mutation since birth, or awoke it while very young, before Cerebro was finished." Storm answered.
"Can you tell what power he has?" Wolverine cut in.
"No, the Professor might be able to, but I'm not there yet." Jean told him.
"That's alright Jean," Scott said. "You'll get there."
Jean gave him a small smile, but otherwise brushed the comment off. She led the way down the street, passing a few different blocks. It was about half a mile away that they finally came across the two mutants. Both were teenagers, one female and the other male. The girl had brunette hair, a coltish body that had yet to fully blossom, and a cute face. The boy was well built, with an impressively muscular body for a teenager. He had close cropped brown hair, and even had the beginnings of a beard on his face. Curiously, all of his facial hair was white.
They were still close to a block away from them when Jean felt a tingle on the edge of her telepathic senses. Focusing in, her eyes widened. Also closing in on the two teens, was a group of the Brotherhood of Mutants. Sabertooth and Mystique were both there, and while they were troublesome, their current group could deal with them easily enough. No, the real worry was that apparently Magneto himself was here. She couldn't read his mind due to the helmet he always wore, and while she couldn't read the other two very well due to their mutations, she could use their senses to see what was around them.
"Magneto, Mystique, and Sabertooth are all here as well." Jean told her companions telepathically.
"Stay on guard." Scott responded, quite needlessly in her opinion. Only a fool wouldn't be on guard around even one of those three, much less all of them. Jean plastered on a welcoming smile, finally having reached the pair.
"Hi! My name is Jean Grey." Jean introduced herself, holding her hand out to the girl. "What are your names?"
"Hi! I'm Kitty!" The girl responded perkily. "And this is my friend Lance!"
"Hello! It is good to meet you!" The boy, Lance, welcomed them boisterously. "What can we do for you?"
"We were actually hoping to speak with you somewhere a bit more privately." Storm cut in. "I'm Ororo Munroe, and this is Scott Summers and Logan."
"What you wanna talk about?" Kitty asked curiously.
"This would really be better said in private." Scott said politely.
"Uh...I don't know...what you think, Lance?" Kitty asked her friend.
"I don't think it could hurt to hear them out, Kitty."
Jean quickly led the way to a nearby park, a spot where she hadn't sensed any people nearby. Kitty was obviously nervous, while Lance seemed absolutely unconcerned. She wondered if it was confidence, or just the arrogance of a teenage boy.
"So, Kitty, the thing is. We are all mutants." Jean said, levitating a stick with telekinesis to hover in the center of the group. "And we know you are one too."
"What!? No! I'm not some mutant!" Kitty denied hotly, looking back and forth in nervousness.
"It's ok, you are among friends here." Storm cut in. "We are from a school called Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters, where we teach mutants like us how to control their powers, and how to live peacefully with the rest of humanity. We came here to offer you a place in our school."
"Now, now." Cut in a smooth and cultured voice. It oozed with charisma and an undercurrent of repressed power. Knowing exactly who it was, Jean turned to face Magneto and his companions.
"They wish to shackle you." Magneto continued. "They want you to deny what you are, the future. Mutants are the future of this world, join me, and we shall take our rightful places as the rulers of this world."
"Who's the bucket head?" Lance asked rudely, everyone turning to stare at him incredulously.
"I am Magneto, and you best learn some manners and soon, boy."
"Gurararara! You're funny, Bucket-Head." Lance just chuckled, somehow not noticing the air of deadly malice slowly rolling off of Magneto.
"You, girl, you look smart enough to see the truth. You should come with us." Magneto said, brushing Lance off and focusing on Kitty.
"I think they would much rather go to the Institute." Scott interrupted.
"I...ugh...I think I should, like, probably talk to my parents first." Kitty stammered out nervously.
"Oh no, I do not think you are understanding the situation. My information says you have the ability to phase through solid matter, and unfortunately, that is just too useful an ability to just let walk away. You'll be coming with me, one way or another." Magneto said imperiously.
Jean was about to cut in, when it seemed like everyone froze. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, and both Logan and Sabertooth seemed to almost whimper and shrink back. Magneto's eyes widened noticeably, and Mystique and Storm both took several steps back. Cyclops gulped nervously, and Jean couldn't help but do so as well. There was a terrifying pressure pushing down on all of them, awakening some primal sense of panic deep within their minds. Jean felt like a mouse staring up at a hungry lion.
"I'm sorry." Lance said, standing up. Lance seemed taller than before, his shadow somehow growing until it swallowed all of them. She was wrong, Lance wasn't as strong as Storm, he had to be much stronger. She had never felt fear like this, and he didn't even seem to be doing anything!
"I must have misheard." Lance continued. "It sounded to me like you were threatening my friend here. My family."
Lance walked forward not like a wolf or a tiger, but like how Jean imagined a T-Rex would walk. It was unhurried, uncaring, as if he knew deep within his bones that he was King of all he surveyed. It wasn't overly graceful, and it wasn't like he was stalking anything. Yet each step seemed to contain untold strength, as if he was daring anything to not bow before him. Lance stopped just a few feet away from Magneto, crossing his arms.
"No one threatens my family." He finished firmly.
Magneto looked almost nervous for a moment, before motioning to Sabertooth. Sabertooth leaped out faster than anyone could react, his clawed fingernails extended and reached for Lance's throat. Even faster than Sabertooth could react, a fist lashed out and caught the feral mutant across the jaw in a backhand. Jean could have sworn that Lance's hand turned black for a moment, but she couldn't be sure. Either way, Sabertooth hit the ground, out cold.
They all looked at Lance in surprise, not believing anyone but a telepath could knock him out that easily. Sabertooth might not be the most powerful mutant around, but he was skilled and experienced, with the second best healing factor she had ever seen. Only Logan's was better, and it was like comparing Bugatti's to Lamborghini's. Neither one truly lost in the comparison.
Magneto narrowed his eyes, no doubt deciding to take Lance seriously. Jean heard a whistling sound for a bare second, before Lance's right hand lashed out and caught a metal pipe that had been aimed straight for his head. She definitely saw his hand turn black this time. Lance looked at the pipe in amusement, before his left hand shot out and grabbed Magneto by the throat.
"You know," Lance said conversationally. Mystique was on guard, but had obviously decided she was outclassed. "I don't like your attitude. Now, while I like to give everyone a fair shake. I think both Kitty and I have decided to decline your generous offer. Right Kitty?"
Kitty nodded her head frantically, looking completely shocked.
"Right. Now Bucket-Head, normally I would just ask you politely to leave, but something tells me you wouldn't get the hint. So, I'll just have to escort you out." Lance finished, a mischievous smile spreading across his face.
Lance tossed Magneto lightly into the air by his throat, grabbing the pipe in his right hand like a baseball bat. The pipe turned black, before it was covered in a strange white aura. He swung the pipe, connecting with Magneto directly in the rear with a resounding crack.
When the pipe hit Magneto, it was like the air itself had turned into a giant pane of glass, that shattered. Cracks formed in the air, striking up to the clouds and down deep into the ground, and the earth shook back and forth. Magento was launched like a cannonball into the air, disappearing into the distance and out of sight.
They all just stared, not believing what they saw. Magneto was an Omega level mutant, one of the most powerful beings on the planet. While the X-Men had foiled many of his plots, Jean had never seen the mutant defeated before. Not like this. Even Mystique was staring in shock, apparently not quite comprehending that she was now alone with only the unconscious Sabertooth.
"What, who...what are you?" Mystique asked in awe.
"Gurarararara! Kitty already introduced me, but I suppose I can do so again. The name is Lance, Lance Alvers. But you can call me Whitebeard." Lance boomed out. He really was a loud and boisterous man, wasn't he? And what kind of codename was Whitebeard?
"As to what I am, well that's easy. I'm a Pirate!" Lance exclaimed, a wide smile on his face as if he had just said the thing he was most proud of in life.
"A pirate?" Asked Cyclops, confused. Jean was confused as well, did he think this was a Halloween party?
"Yes, a Pirate! Now, don't get me wrong. A pirate isn't some common criminal with a boat, a true pirate is someone who chases their dreams no matter the obstacle! They live their life freely upon the sea! Answering to no one, and nothing! Aye, I'm a pirate! May not have a crew or a ship yet, but those are just details to figure out along the way!" Lance explained passionately, his voice loud with excitement and conviction.
"I'm guessing you won't be joining the Institute then, Captain Sparrow?" Wolverine said sarcastically.
"Nope! I'm my own captain, can't be joining someone else's crew!" Lance told him happily.
"I...I don't know." Kitty cut in, obviously thinking about it. "I mean, like I said, I have to talk to my parents but...The idea of being able to control my powers does sound nice."
"Then come on, we can walk you home and we can all talk to your parents again." Storm said, putting her hand on the shaken girl's shoulder.
"You alright with this, Kitty?" Lance asked her seriously, making Jean smile at how he cared about his friend.
"Yeah, Lance. I think this might, like, be good." Kitty answered with a smile, before continuing a bit more nervously. "You sure you don't want to go, too? Like, I will see you again, right?"
"Aye Kitty, I am sure. I think it's time I strike out on my own, start searching for a crew and maybe find a ship. I'll be just fine, don't you worry about me." Lance said, pulling her into a gentle hug. "And of course you will see me again! Once I have my crew I'll take 'em all on by to see you in your fancy new school!"
"I'm going to miss you, Lance."
"I'll miss you too, Kitty. Don't worry, this won't be the last you see of the Great Captain Whitebeard!"
Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mr. Sinister, smiled from within one of his many hidden labs. One of his many cloned agents had brought him some footage of an incredibly curious specimen. A mutant able to make a fool out of Magneto? One that appears to have not one, but two abilities? Such a specimen would be a great help in his quest to make the perfect mutant. Sending out some messages, he ordered a group of cloned mutants to capture the boy.
Yes, Sinister thought. His DNA should be most interesting.
AN: Boom! New story guys! I decided to go with this idea, my second one, along with this first idea. I decided to post my second idea first, and my first idea second, just to be contrary. Look forward to my first marvel story idea to be posted sometime in the coming weeks.
If you have some well thought suggestions for crewmembers, let me know. I want some actual reasons however, of why they would be good for the crew, and why the crew would be good for them. Not a harem fic, so being "hot" is not a good enough reason for me to add someone.
Updates will be sporadic, but I will try to get one out every week or two.
