Crashing Down
Lexie sat silently in the back seat of the plane, the Boise twins' bios resting in her lap. She, along with five of her fellow doctors, were going to Boise, Idaho to operate on a set of conjoined twins. This was a remarkable surgery that she had the opportunity to be involved with, but all she could think about was how she wanted to be as far away from being on this plane as she could. Be as far away from him as she could. Lexie could not believe what a fool she made of herself to the man she loved and that used to love her. She professed her undying love for him, her yearning for him, her desire to be with him, and all he responded with was, "Thank you for your candor". What kind of response was that? If the response was not bad enough, his current girlfriend showed up just after Lexie finished her profession. Did she hear it? Did she hear it and not say anything? Did she know she had no need to worry? These thoughts and more were running through Lexie's mind.
Lexie allowed her eyes to scan over the words on bio pages every now and then, though it wasn't necessary with her photographic memory. She wanted to do everything she could to get her mind off Mark. Mark. Mark was perfect. He was patient, kind, caring, loyal, smart… but he wasn't hers. She had ruined her chances one too many times with him. Now, he was happy with someone else who wanted to give him the family he always wanted… but Lexie wanted it to be her to be the one to give him that family. She wasn't ready for it when his teenage daughter showed up, nor was she ready for it when he unexpectedly got his best friend pregnant after a one night stand, but she was ready now. Lexie didn't know if she was ready to have children, but she was ready to begin the rest of her life with Mark. If that meant having children before her residency was over, she was ready to do that.
Lexie closed up the twins' bio folders and put them in the bag next to her she had brought onto the plane. She unbuckled her seatbelt and walked toward the bathroom, closing the door behind her. Leaning against the door, Lexie sighed deeply and ran her hands over her face. She glanced in the mirror and saw the bags under eyes. Lack of sleep really did affect her appearance, she thought bitterly to herself. Lexie put on a fake smile before she opened the door to exit the bathroom and return to her seat.
Once back at her seat, Lexie buckled back up and rested her head against the window. Not even ten minutes later, her head began banging against the window. Her eyes flew open right as the plane began to plummet to the ground. She looked over at Mark who was a few seats ahead of her on the opposite aisle, wanting his image to be the last thing she saw. Lexie began to scream as she was sucked backwards just as the plane split in half.
Mark leaned his head back against the seat, looking up toward the ceiling. He knew he should have said something to Lexie when she poured her heart out to him. But, in all honesty, he was stunned. Stunned that she finally said the words he had waited the last several months to hear. She loved him. She wanted to be him. The entire time she was talking, Mark's heart was beating a mile a minute. His mouth went dry, and he had to try to contain himself from interrupting her. Mark wanted nothing more than to say that he loved her, too. But then Julia showed up… Julia. His girlfriend. She was a nice girl. She had a promising career. She wanted to give him everything that he ever wanted. When she said she wanted to have a baby with him, Mark was conflicted. He was thrilled at the prospect of having another child, but he wasn't sure if he wanted Julia to be the mother of his child. Sure, she would be a great mom and he could stay with her and build a life with her. That wasn't who he wanted to build a life with, though. Lexie was the one he wanted to be the mother of his future children. Lexie was the one he wanted to do life with; she was the one who completed him.
After going home with Julia the previous night, he couldn't sleep. He lied awake for hours letting all these thoughts invade his mind. When he looked over at Julia, he no longer saw the person that could have his baby. He saw someone that was blocking his happiness. Julia was a sweet person, though, and he didn't want to break her heart. He would break up with her in the morning. However, when the sun rose, Julia was nowhere to be seen. Mark reached for his phone to see a text from Julia, letting him know she got called in for an emergency surgery. He would tell her as soon as he got back from Boise.
Seeing Lexie board the plane and sit in the back alone pulled at Mark's heartstrings. He wished more than anything that he could sit next to her, pull her into his arms, and let her know that he loved her, too. He could see the lack of emotion in her eyes. That's all he could think about during the flight. Mark craned his neck to glance back at Lexie, seeing her rest her head against the window. A small smile played at Mark's lips. She was the cutest when she slept.
All of a sudden, Mark felt his seat start to shake. He sat up a little straighter and tightened his seatbelt. He glanced out the window, only to see the clouds bobbing up and down. At that moment, Mark knew that something was terribly wrong. His heart started to sink along with the plane. Suddenly, he was jolted upwards as the plane hit a tree. The last thing he remembers is hearing the screams of his fellow doctors.
Mark groaned, struggling to peel open his eyes. What happened? His entire body was aching, along with having a pounding headache. Mark glanced up at the sky to see birds flying around the trees. Pushing himself up onto his elbows, Mark let out another groan. He glanced over to his side to see plane debris lying next to him. That's right he thought.
"Lexie?" Mark called out, his voice hoarse. Despite the pain he was feeling, he pushed himself to his feet and stumbled toward the main part of the plane. "Lexie?" He called a little louder, feeling his voice come back to him.
"Mark!" he heard someone call to him. Mark turned around to see Cristina and Meredith approaching him. He stumbled over toward them, his brain still in a fog.
"Are you two okay?" Mark inquired, glancing over both of them. Cristina had a few cuts and scrapes on her face, along with a dislocated arm, but other than that, she seemed to be in decent shape. Meredith had a gash on the back of her head, a large piece of fabric wrapped around her leg, and a few cuts on face.
"We're okay. Have you found the others? Lexie?" Meredith asked, her voice panicked. Mark shook his head, when suddenly, the three of them heard an ear piercing scream. The group stumbled toward the noise to see Arizona lying beside the main part of the plane. Her left leg had bones sticking out and she had blood all around her face.
"Robbins!" Mark exclaimed, rushing as best as he could toward her side. Meredith assisted Mark with propping Arizona up against the remnants of the plane. The two of them lifted both her legs so that they were in front of her body. Cristina gathered some scraps of fabric, applying them to the blood on Arizona's face. Luckily, it was mostly dried blood and they did not have to worry about her externally bleeding too much. Arizona continued her agonizing screams, which made Cristina grimace and eventually break.
"Shut up! Just shut up!" she exasperated irritably. Arizona clamped her mouth together while tears began to fall freely down her face. The group suddenly heard banging coming from several meters away. They all looked to each other, and rose to their feet with the exception of Arizona.
"We'll be back," Meredith murmured, looking into Arizona's eyes as a promise they would not leave her for long. Mark took the lead in following the banging noise. Underneath a pile of rubble, an arm was hitting a rock against the backside of the plane. Mark's breath hitched in his throat as he began to run as fast as he could toward the wreckage.
"Lexie," he yelled, falling to his knees once he was close enough to pile of wreckage. Lexie was lying underneath the pile, only her upper half visible. She had blood covering her face and hair. "M-Mark," she whimpered, looking at him with terrified eyes.
"Hey, how are you doing?" he asked softly, reaching his hand out to brush some of the blood matted hair away from her face. He trailed his fingers down to her neck to feel for a pulse. Forcing a small smile toward her, Mark pushed back onto his knees looking at Cristina and Meredith, who had expectant eyes. "She has a pulse, but it's weak. We have to get this off her," he said firmly, but his voice began to shake at the end of the sentence.
"Meredith?" Lexie called a few moments later. Meredith was looking around to see what they could possibly do to get the plane of Lexie. It was too heavy for the three of them to lift. Even if they had the entire group of doctors that they came with, there was no way that they would be able to get the plane off Lexie. Hearing Lexie's voice, Meredith moved over toward her sister and dropped to the ground.
"Hey," she smiled, raking her eyes over Lexie's injuries. She could tell that they were bad, but she didn't want to think about that. Right now, she needed to focus on getting her sister out from under the plane and finding her husband. "You're going to be okay. We will get you of here," she offered, squeezing Lexie's hand.
"M-Mer… y-you have been a g-good s-s-sister," Lexie stuttered, her eyes closing. Meredith's eyes widened, and she began to panic. "Get oxygen and fluids!" she called, reaching for Lexie's wrist to check her pulse. She noted that it was weak like Mark had said, but she didn't think it was too weak for Lexie to be this bad. Mark pushed Meredith out of the way and crawled under the plane to be as close to Lexie as he could.
"Lex, Lex, look at me," Mark demanded, taking her hand in his. Lexie opened her eyes, her brown ones meeting Mark's. "You are not going to die. You are going to stay with us," he whispered, squeezing her hand. Nodding, Lexie did what she could to force her eyes to stay open. Cristina arrived a few moments later, along with an oxygen tank and two bottles of water. Mark took the oxygen and put it on Lexie as best as he could. Meredith turned the dial to allow Lexie to start getting oxygen into her body. Unscrewing the cap of the water bottle, Mark brought it to Lexie's lips. "Drink some," he said as he began to pour it into Lexie's open mouth. Once she had some water in her mouth, she began to cough but was able to keep the liquid down.
Lexie sniffled and reached for Mark's hand. She still wasn't sure if he loved her back, but if she was going to die, holding Mark's hand was the way that she wanted to go. Mark readily took her hand in his, lacing their fingers together. "We're going to get you out of here, Lex. I promise," Mark replied, bringing her hand up to his mouth. He pressed a gentle kiss to each of her knuckles.
"I-I can't find Derek. I have to go find him," Meredith stuttered, looking between Cristina and Mark. Mark nodded hesitantly, knowing that if the position was reversed and Lexie was still lost, he would already be gone looking for her.
"Go, we'll stay with her and work on getting her free," Cristina stated, resting one hand on Meredith's shoulder. She knew she should go with her friend to look for Derek, but for all they knew, Derek may not even be alive. The group found Arizona alive and provided temporary help to her, and they needed to do the same for Lexie. Meredith began to walk away, calling for Derek.
"Derek isn't o-okay? What about Arizona?" Lexie asked quietly, searching Mark's eyes for answers. She may not be close to Arizona, but Arizona was the mom to Mark's child, regardless of the tough transition for Mark. She knew that Mark cared about Arizona.
"She's safe for now. We need to get you out, okay?" Mark murmured, stroking the back of her hand with his thumb. Lexie nodded in agreement as a strong cough caught in her throat. Blood started to spew out of her lips, falling on her bloody scrubs. Tears sprung to Lexie's eyes as she realized she was more than likely internally bleeding. She knew that was not a good sign. Panic began to course through Mark's body as he squeezed Lexie's hand once again. "Hold on for me. I need you. We are going to have such a good life, you and me. We are going to give Sofia siblings. We're going to get a house and go on vacations and have the best life, Lex. Please," Mark pleaded. He took his free hand and placed a kiss on it. Reaching over, he then placed that hand over Lexie's lips, searching her eyes.
"Y-you don't have to say that, Mark. I-I know you're h-happy," Lexie croaked, trying her best to keep her eyes open. Shaking his head, Mark crawled closer to her face.
"No, Lex. I'm not. It's always been you. Always. We are going to get you out of here. I'll be right here," Mark promised, resting his head next to hers for a few moments. Once he felt her nod, he scooted back so that he could stand properly to speak to Cristina.
Cristina looked at Mark, motioning to her dislocated arm. "I need you to help me get this back into place before we can even try to help her," she explained, taking a deep breath. Mark moved closer to her, attempting to steady his hands. He wiped his palms on his scrub pants before he grabbed her arm. Looking at her, he counted to three and popped it back into place. Cristina's screams rang out through the wooded trees with a few tears trickling down her face. She let out a deep sigh once she composed herself, her eyes boring into Mark's. "Tell me you have a plan to get her out of there."
