this is a fanfiction about Valentine's Day. although a time of joy for all of the couples, it's a day dedicated to misery for the single people. our brave hero, Tai Kamiya, fits the bill just right for that sort of idea. I originally wanted to make this into a one-shot fanfiction, but it did not work out for me that way. so I went with my fail-safe plan to turn it into a chapter fanfiction.

disclamation: I do not own the 'Digimon' anime. I honestly don't know exactly who the rights of ownership on the show are reserved for, but those rights certainly don't belong to me.

It was Valentine's Day once again, the worst day of the year for single men in Japanese culture. Why was that? It was because in Japan, only the girls gave chocolates to the guys they liked as either friends or lovers. The guys in Japan always had to wait to pay the girls back on White Day, a holiday in Japan celebrated on March fourteenth, an entire month after Valentine's Day.

Of course for guys like Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya, it seemed that Valentine's Day was only a day for heartbreak. That's right. Tai Kamiya and all other single guys like him always seemed to be in for a day filled with nothing but certain misery during this time of the year.

Tai's day of misery began with even his own sister, Hikari 'Kari' Yagami/Kamiya.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: Hey, Kari.

Hikari 'Kari' Yagami/Kamiya: What up, onii-chan?

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: You made chocolates for Valentine's Day, right, sis?

Hikari 'Kari' Yagami/Kamiya: Yeah, I did.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: So, I'd be willing to guess that means that you made some for me, too then.

Kari suddenly saw where this was going.

Hikari 'Kari' Yagami/Kamiya: Why would I have ever had to make chocolates for you? I only made chocolates to give to T.K. when I get to school.

Tai felt miserable that not even his own sister, Kari, made him chocolates.

Later at their joint high school, Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi tried to provide Tai with some comfort.

Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi: She was probably trying to avoid basically getting bombarded with the one-sided affections of your own soccer teammates. I think she just wanted to avoid the possibility of leading the soccer team on.

Tai, however, would just not hear it.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: That's no excuse for not making some for me since I'm her own flesh and blood.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida suddenly showed up and began lecturing Tai on being respectful of Kari's feelings.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: She probably wanted to avoid the very same kind of issue she had with Davis when he fawned over her like an idiot.

Tai was ready to strike back at Matt when he suddenly remembered just how much of a jerk face Daisuke 'Davis' Motomiya was while he had that one-sided crush on Tai's younger sister.

Matt finally made a move to cheer Tai up about Valentine's Day.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Besides, it's still too early to mope over it prematurely. I'm sure you'll get chocolates from even just one girl.

Sora Takenouchi showed up with a box of chocolates in her own hands.

Sora Takenouchi: Matt's right, Tai. You are the captain of the soccer team, after all.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Couldn't have said it better myself.

Tai then noticed the box of chocolates in Sora's hands and grew excited by the sight of it.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: Hey, Sora. I see you made some of your own chocolates.

Matt and Izzy suddenly saw the box of chocolates, too.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Oh yeah, almost didn't notice that box.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: I don't suppose you could possibly spare even just one of those chocolates for me, unless they're all for me, that is.

Sora chuckled nervously at Tai's assumption.

Sora Takenouchi: Actually, Tai, this is a box of chocolates that I made just for Matt. I'm sorry, Tai, but I kinda have the same idea as Kari for today.

Sora chuckled nervously once again. Matt blushed at the notion of Sora's chocolates being all for him while Tai crumbled inside.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Th-Thank you, Sora. I don't know what to say.

Tai was a little bitter at the chocolates from Sora being for Matt the whole time.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: I think that 'thank you' you gave Sora would suffice just enough. I'm going to class.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Wanna walk there with me and Sora since we're in the same class with you this year, anyway?

Tai felt even more bitter that it was Matt who offered him that instead of Sora like he secretly wanted it to be her. As a result of Matt asking the question instead, Tai turned around to face the two of them with a bitterly forced smile covering his face.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: No, I'll be taking the scenic route to class and you two lovebirds can take the direct route so you can have each other all to yourselves on the way there.

Sora Takenouchi: Tai, if this is about my only giving chocolates to Matt, you don't need to take a different route than us. There's still a chance you can get chocolates from someone.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Sora's right. You do know that you're perfectly welcome to take the same route as us, don't you?

But, Tai would not hear any of it.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: No, no, I'm fine to go on my own route to class. I wouldn't wanna intrude in on you guys' alone time, anyway. Believe me, you two are better off without me on the same route to class as you.

Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi: Cheer up, Tai. Would you like one of my chocolates?

The idea that Izzy beat him to receiving chocolates really got on Tai's nerves.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: Izzy, you mean to tell me that even you already got chocolates from someone?

Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi: Hey, what do you mean by even I already got chocolates from someone? Of course, I got chocolates from someone. That someone just happened to have been Mimi in between first and second period.

Matt and Sora were openly proud of this achievement for Izzy, of course.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Way to go, Highest IQ Of Them All!

Sora Takenouchi: Nice one, Izzy.

Matt gave Izzy a pat on the back while Sora gave him a small high-five. Izzy openly blushed at Matt and Sora's joint congratulations towards him. Tai, on the other hand, grew even more bitter than before only for a different reason, this time.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: I can't believe that even the computer nerd beat me to receiving chocolates from a girl. Now, I'm definitely not gonna take the same route to class as the lovebirds.

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Don't take your frustrations out on the wrong people, Tai.

Later along the route to his class which Tai had taken, he ran into Mimi Tachikawa, the friend of his from their joint history with Matt, Sora and Izzy who had given chocolates to Izzy, himself, that same morning… while their own class was still in session, no less.

Tai had then decided that he was just desperate enough to turn to Mimi for Valentine's chocolates. Luckily for him, Mimi had noticed Tai immediately so he did not actually have to call out to her.

Mimi Tachikawa: Hey, Tai, what's the haps with you today?

Tai's bitter smile had disappeared long before he ran into Mimi and had been replaced by a frown by the time they ran into one another. Mimi noticed the frown on Tai's face. Of course being the naturally caring if a bit self-centered person that she was, Mimi walked up to Tai to see what could have possibly been wrong with her friend.

Mimi Tachikawa: Oh, come now, Tai. Why the long face? Smile at least a little bit. It is Valentine's Day, after all. Cheer up!

Although she had just inadvertently reminded him why he was so upset, Tai tried to control his temper just long enough to ask Mimi about any Valentine's chocolates she might be able to spare for him.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: Congratulations, Mimi. You've now become my last hope for getting any chocolates for Valentine's Day this year. I don't suppose you might have some at least left over from the chocolates you gave to Izzy, do you?

Mimi laughed nervously about Tai's question while now wearing her own strained smile on her face.

Mimi Tachikawa: Well, the thing is…

Then, Mimi bowed her head at Tai as though she were trying to soften the blow of her words to him.

Mimi Tachikawa: I admit that I made chocolates for Izzy, but the thing is that I actually used up all the chocolates I had on the ones I made for him.

Then, Mimi raised her head back up to offer a substitution to her friend, all while she wore a cheerful smile upon her face, this time. She held out her bag of chocolates from other guys out to Tai.

Mimi Tachikawa: You can have one of the chocolates I received for myself from my many admirers, though. I have just so many that I can't possibly eat them all by myself.

But, Tai just flat out rejected that kind of offer from Mimi, too.

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami/Kamiya: No thanks! The last kind of Valentine's chocolates any guy needs are regifted Valentine's chocolates. I'd starve my second desert stomach before I'd ever accepted any regifted chocolates.

Mimi Tachikawa: I was trying to be nice about it. No need to bite my head off.
