Disclaimer: I didn't write Ryuugi's magnificent The Games We Play. Oh, and I guess I don't own RWBY.
Team RWBY was having a quiet Sunday morning in their dorm room. Wiess was quietly studying what Grimm Studies should be teaching, Blake was reading a trashy romance novel, and Yang was browsing the internet with her scroll. Ruby, on the other hand is-
"I'm sooooo Bored!"
-complaining quite loudly.
Laying on her bed, arms spread out and legs kicking, Ruby Rose was restless.
"Weiss, can we practice combination moves again, those were really fun!"
Without looking up from her studies, yet still still sighing in exasperation, Weiss responded languidly, "We already did that yesterday, I need to catch up on my studies. Besides, I'm trying to be economical with my Dust."
Even without her eyes on het team leader, Weiss could imagine the disappointed pout practically radiating from Ruby. Rolling her eyes, she reluctantly speaks up again, "After lunch, I guess I could use some practice fighting without dust."
"Yay! I've been meaning to work on my close range combat!"
Ruby smiles cheerfully, before realization dawns on her. With a petulant expression, she whines out, "But I want to do something nooow."
Glancing at her sister, Yang raises an eyebrow, and asks, "Sis, are you feeling okay? You've seem to be less... Occupied recently."
With a drawn out sigh, Ruby lays with her hands under her head, gazing listlessly at the ceiling. "It's just that the classes have been repetitive lately. I can tell I've been improving, but now that I'm used to life at Beacon, I need something new."
Blake hums, eyes staring at the pages of her book, but no longer reading. As she was thinking of ways to entertain her team leader, a knock on the dorm door resounded through the room. This startled her for a number of reasons.
The first being that she was interrupted in the middle of thinking, the second that she didn't have any expectations of someone visiting, but the third is the most important.
She didn't hear anyone approaching.
Because of Blake's Faunus heritage, she is used to being able to hear the footsteps of people in the hallway outside the door. When she hears someone approaching, she'd usually have time to conceal her ears again with her bow. This instantly made her cautious, as it either meant someone was concealing their footsteps, or moved so fast that they effectively telepotered. The second one was unlikely, because she's gotten used to making out the sound of air displacement from Ruby's Semblence.
Before Blake can act, Ruby is already at the door saying "I'll get it!" over her shoulder.
The door opens.
And on the other side is an unremarkable person. They are holding a package, which they hand over to Ruby.
"Here," they placidly state.
"Okaaay?" Ruby, confused, took the package without thinking.
The figure nodded before... communicating.
"[DATA TRANSFER]."
And suddenly, all the members of team RWBY understood. The figure outside of the door isn't a person. It's a plain, featureless, vessel. It has an aura that makes people think of it as an unassuming person, even though they can't think of any features it has. In actuality, it's the puppet of something... Greater. An omnipresent being, across an untold amount of Universes. On a whim, it decided to give them the chance to view a much more dangerous universe, to observe their reactions. Nothing is at stake, if team RWBY refuses, it'll just pick another universe.
...
Team RWBY was in disarray. One of life's biggest questions was the existence of a higher being. All throughout life, religions have popped up, philosophical debates have occurred, and so on. To have something so grand and existential confirmed was a bombshell. Exclamations of shock was made, half hearted denials shot down, and questions aimed at the vessel ignored. Each of the members process it differently.
Ruby quickly compartmentalizes the existential questions. In her head, this being is less a person and more of a force that has no personal effect on her. She doesn't get constantly hung up on the vastness of space, the question of creation, and so on. The only existential question that matters to her, is the source of the Grimm, because of the personal effect it has on her. All that was left a curiosity of the otherworldly knowledge, as well as a quite assurance that she will probably freak out about this much later.
Yang, on the other hand, suffered a heavy blow to her ego, as well as a general frustration of the situation. A large part of her life has been about learning more about her erstwhile mother. She has constantly searched, only to fail again and again. She has created a complex, about how no one understands and emphasizes with her because of this. To suddenly find out, that due to the nature of the Vessel, all of her answers are across the door, but no matter what she tries, she won't get them, angers her. But at the same time, demoralizes her. Eventually, she stops thinking about it. She still wants to find out why her mother left her, and she will keep on going even if she doesn't have an easy way to get it.
Blake, however, goes through several realizations. This thing is the closest thing to God. It can do practically anything. But it's not solving everyone's problems. This would have angered her a lot more, that someone with infinite power isn't using it for infinite good, if not for the nature of the data transfer. She learned that the direction behind this force, isn't what she recognizes as a person. Through the alien impressions, she can tell that it is basically a poorly coded machine. It is set out on doing literally EVERYTHING. But it is doing it poorly. The first thing it picked at random, was observing intelligent beings reactions to information. It has been doing this for an incalculable amount of time. Blake then decides that since this is something that is incapable of choice, she shouldn't blame it for not choosing to do something. This ends with Blake realizing she will hate, with all her being, an Omnipotent Being that states itself as righteous and doesn't fix all problems.
Weiss, compared to everyone else, comes out of her contemplation feeling dread. She notes that the confirmed existence of a higher being, makes the logical leap that there are similar such beings. She questions that, when she dies, will she be judged by her sins and virtues and sent to eternal torture or peace? She is confident that she's lived a rather good life, but she doesn't KNOW the standards of the Judges. She now fears, that no matter if she lives as the most virtuos of saints or vile of sinners, Hell is all that awaits her.
As team RWBY remains in her funk, she decides to step forward.
"I think we should take this chance," She says.
The others pause, remembering that the purpose of this Vessel's presence was an opportunity to view a dangerous universe. They each decide that they really can't turn down this once in a life time chance, each nodding their heads.
Looking back at the Vessel, Ruby states, "We agree."
AN: This will be a short fic, like around 5 chapters. For some reason I've had a craving to for a reaction fic for some of my favorite moments in TGWP, and I can't find any RWBY watching fics that take requests, so here I am. What will be shown to team RWBY won't start at the beginning of TGWP, but rather the Jaune versus Tenne fight in the Conquest arc. I also won't copy and past from TGWP, because otherwise there would be A LOT of Jaune's monologue. It will be an interesting writing challenge to convey the fight properly.
